According to legend, on 9 March 1842, Mexican mineralogist Francisco López y Arbello decided to have a siesta beneath an oak tree in an area he was surveying. While asleep, he had visions of floating on a pool of gold. When he awoke, he was struck by hunger and spotted some wild onions growing in the shade of the tree. He unearthed the onions and noticed tiny gold flecks sticking to the roots. It was then López had discovered gold in Mexico’s northern frontier.

López brought his gold findings to the nearby Pueblo de Los Ángeles to be appraised. News of the discovery spread as far south as his home state of Sonora and triggered the first gold rush in what is now the U.S. state of California.

The tree itself is a coast live oak that’s at least 200 years old. Its fire-scarred trunk and lush canopy chirping with birds hints at its resilience. I’ve visited the tree a few times and it’s quite a remarkable specimen.

The story varies too. Sometimes it’s a local rancher who discovered the gold. Sometimes it’s a Spanish missionary. Sometimes it’s a river of gold. Other times it’s a field of gold. I presented the story that I could reliably verify.

ch. 19 - making memories with you is my favorite thing to do

Chenford enjoy their honeymoon.

The two days following their wedding are spend with helping cleaning and tidying up their venue before going to go see Jackson on Sunday, and lazying around the house — or more specifically, the bed — the rest of Sunday and most of Monday morning before they have to get up to pack for their honeymoon. They’d already gotten most of their camping and hiking gear ready to go a few days prior but some things still needed to be packed so they could leave bright and early the next morning for their first stop of their 17-day long honeymoon.

And in true Tim and Lucy fashion, they won’t be doing anything overtly special. They both love going out in nature to decompress; hiking is one of their favorite things to do together whenever they find the time and why not make a little road trip out of it? They’ll be visiting a few different national parks along the way and then set up camp in a cozy little cabin for a week before making their way back home.

Kojo, unfortunately, won’t be coming with them since dogs aren’t always allowed in the parks. But maybe it’s also a good thing because then he won’t be interrupting them. Instead, he’ll be staying with Tamara for most of the time, and spend a few days with Genny and the boys.

And so, on Tuesday morning at 6:17am, they pull out of their driveway to start their first journey to Sequoia National Park.

They’re having an early start so they can make it to Sequoia at noon at the latest, depending on traffic of course.

And despite the early hour, it takes them almost an hour until they’ve finally made it past Santa Clarita. Much to Lucy’s surprise though, Tim doesn’t get nearly as cranky and grumpy as she would’ve expected. When she makes a comment about it, he easily responds that it just means he has more time with her in the car, and well.. she thinks that’s really cute. And the smile he shoots her way is just so beautiful - and definitely does not send her heart aflutter. Will it ever not make her swoon?

Aside from a quick toilet break at a gas station just outside of Bakersfield about two hours into their trip, they don’t stop again and make it to Sequoia in just over five hours.

The first thing on their to do list is of course taking a look at one of the biggest and tallest trees in the world, the General Sherman Tree. Despite having lived in California their entire lives, neither had actually ever been to Sequoia before to see the tree. Lucy, however, had been in Redwood National Park before and hiked to see the Hyperion, the largest tree in the world, but this, now, was something they could experience together for the first time.

It’s a short walk up from the parking lot via the trail and they’d seemingly gotten lucky with the time because it’s not as overrun as they had feared it might be.

“I feel tiny,” Lucy marvels when she can finally look up at the tree that’s now right in front of them fifteen minutes later.

“You are tiny,” Tim shoots back without missing a beat.
