If a man hides his grime under his pocket square, then a woman must hide her vanity in her lipstick. And additionally, it must be bright red.
Women have been using lipstick for centuries. The trend was brought up to its climax by Queen Elizabeth I in 16th century in England, where bright red lips and a stark white face made an iconic makeup.
About a century ago, when lipstick tube wasn’t introduced, western females used brush to dip in carmine dye while eastern females used a piece of red-painted paper to slightly redden their lips. Doubtlessly, feminine concinnity speaks for itself. Either way needs meticulous motions. Women sat in front of their dresser in evening gown or cheongsam; they slightly opened their mouths to redden their lips. What else shall be necessary?
Now people have abandoned the old-fashioned way. Lipstick no longer tastes like crayon. A variety of delicate lipstick tubes are used to hold the lipstick as well. Companies like Guerlain or Estée Lauder hire jewelry designers for tube design. Sometimes women buy lipstick not for the color but the tube, and no one can blame them for doing so.
Applying lipstick on lips can be a joyful experience. I remember how my mother does it as a daily routine. She uses a lip liner around her lips’ outline then lipsticks herself. Finally she softly sips. She wouldn’t forget to lipstick me between my eyebrows. One slips lipstick off lips; colors of lipstick and lips mingle together and create a mild sexiness, which feels better than a lover’s finger tips sliding cross the nude spine.
Lip colors change every year. You might find orange lipstick in every department store this summer, and they might as well disappear from the scene the next season. But bright red is undying. Like Marguerite Duras wrote in her prose La Maison, the necessities in Nodule are always there, a list. “The list is always there, on the wall. Everything is on the list, and there is no addition. It has been twenty years since the list was first been listed. Five or six hundred new products are introduced, but none of them is included in the list”. Bright red lipstick is on the list. Tide comes and goes, but this signature color will never be washed away.
