“Colin, you better have a damn good reason for showing up at 7 am.”
“Why, you got someone here?”
“Of course not.”
Meanwhile, the not-someone upstairs…

Not saying this would have been a better ending to S3 — but I’m not not saying it.

Something something, Ted calling Trent “Sport” after Trent points out that “sport, it’s quite the metaphor”. When they’ve both just heard Roy talk about his feelings about seeing Keeley again being back at Chelsea and agreeing that it’s better to be the one breaking up with someone rather than being broken up with to quit than being fired. (Also the song in the background going “you’re not alone, you’re not alone” as Trent and Ted are the only ones left in the office. After Ted jokingly “flirted” with Roy saying “if you wouldn’t have left Chelsea when you did, we probably never would have met.” And they show Trent’s reaction right after we’ve seen Roy’s. And Trent is smiling and then Roy looks at him and gestures towards Ted and Trent and Ted are left alone in the office where the aforementioned conversation about sport being used as a metaphor and Ted calling Trent “Sport” happens.
(I’m sorry if this doesn’t make any sense. It’s 4.30am.)

kenstewy: 25%. that trailer though 👀
macdennis: 90%. i bet my hat on it.
tedependent: 3%. trent being gay? 100%.

I wanted to wrap this up and post it before Things got in the way and I potentially disappeared for four to eight weeks. and here it is!
amazing that there's not a huge subgenre of "learning to ride a bike" fics in this fandom. i'm doing my part
summary: In which Ted teaches Trent to ride a bike, and it goes well, and then briefly doesn't, and then very much does.
ao3 tags: Getting Together, Fluff, Bicycles, biking is so great, positive reinforcement works for both of these men more than they want to admit, stickers meant for children, a minor injury
commentary/bonus under the cut:
title comes from a poorly sourced quote that i found when idly searching for lines about joy/bikes/etc: “Riding a bicycle is the closest you can get to flying.” – Robin Williams
idk if it's by williams but it's true, darlings
is the title just about riding a bike? nope, darlings
i love the song "joy to you baby" by josh ritter but a good fic title it does not make. at least not this fic.
go listen to it, though, it's very sweet
i wrote this from the well-researched position of being a person who learned to ride a bike as adult, by which I mean last march. BIKES ARE GREAT
jem and the holograms
these are Ted's stickers:

yeah like maybe i am a clown but hear me out
trent working on a book about ted's coaching style. trent shadowing ted, interviewing the players, taking note of how various problems are handled. it's purely professional. ted and him have a friendly professional relationship.
and then maybe one day he has to bring his daughter in to work with him because she's four and had a terrible tantrum about going to kindergarten. the team likes her well enough, try to teach her how to pass the football. ted's a natural with her, maybe tells a story about when henry was her age. and he's got an air of sadness about him as he does, and trent recognizes the fact that ted's given up seeing key moments in his son's life in order to work here. and the two bond over fatherhood, what it means to them. the next day ted gives trent some biscuits for his daughter.
trent's still got a friendly professional relationship with ted, but now they text a bit more. talk a bit more on topics outside of football. ted's interested in what trent has to say. he asks trent questions deeper than surface level. they grow closer. more of friends now than professionals. ted invites trent out for drinks with beard, roy, higgins. it's conflicting to trent as he still has to write his book objectively, although even he knows deep down that objectivity's been thrown out the window ever since he leaked his source.
then there's amsterdam. colin comes out to trent outside of a gay club purely by accident. he hadn't meant to be seen, but, well, trent saw him, so. trent gives him advice and shares his own experiences. colin decides to come out on his own time to the team, who rally behind him in support.
while in amsterdam, ted says it's a real shame trent can't ride a bike. trent is perceptive enough to see where the comment heads, but he can only half-heartedly decline once before he lets ted talk him into being taught. if ted's hands linger on trent's back, arms, well that's just part of it, right? if when he falls (crashes, more like), and ted is checking him over with worried eyes to make sure he's alright, that's just part of it, right? there shouldn't be a reason his heart is pounding fast in his chest.
the vibe changes. trent writes as objective as possible. it grows harder by the week. richmond climbs up the ranks of the league.
there's a fundraiser event he has no intentions of going to. ted invites trent as his plus one. trent tries to justify attending as research for his book, but when he sees what ted's wearing he can't keep a coherent thought together.
halfway through the fundraiser, ted's gone. he finds him in a quiet space away from the event. concerned, trent asks what's the matter. ted opens up that he's been going to therapy for his panic attacks, his trauma and anxiety. he's been getting better, but today is his son's birthday, and he feels overwhelmed that he can't be there for him. a facetime call can only do so much. and trent listens. offers his shoulder for ted to lean on. when ted confides that this season may be his last, it doesn't come as a surprise.
they continue to grow closer, each of them opening up more to the other. trent learns about ted's childhood. ted learns about trent's shitty father and the bullying he went through in school. they stand closer in proximity; sometimes when trent hands ted a beer, their fingers brush; they lean towards one another when speaking. trent wants and wants and wants, yet he knows ted's leaving soon. he doesn't even think ted is interested like he's interested.
until richmond wins a critical game. and everyone's celebrating and cheering and chanting. trent leaves the locker room when he thinks he can slip out unnoticed, only for ted to catch up to him in the parking lot. trent congratulates the win; ted takes trent's hand. there's something in the air between them. something charged. it's something that can never be. ted is leaving, ted is the subject of his book. trent reminds himself of these facts. he squeezes ted's hand.
ted squeezes back. and that's enough, surely? that has to be enough. a quiet confirmation that the feeling is not one-sided. that if the circumstances were different, they could explore where this thing between them goes. it has to be enough

(takes place after Chapter Five)
Trent replayed the wink over and over as he went through the motions to follow the team to the game. And he'd been flirty towards Ted? It was just so hard not to be when the man was being so proudly queer and loving, using his position to take on homophobia in the Premier League.
Trent reminded himself to keep a professional distance, here at work. When he got home he could think about his feelings for Ted Lasso. Right now, there was a football match to watch, and he was sure that the post match interviews would touch on the Pride Night announcement.
After the match, Trent high-fived and secret-handshaked the players he had built rapport with. He gave Colin a fist bump and commented 'good game.' When a few players got asked about Pride Night, he was thrilled to hear their answers -- all supportive, all proud of this effort, with some palpable excitement. Jamie was interviewed last, and Trent remembered Ted's fierce defense of him just a few days prior. He leaned against the wall to watch.
The reporter tried to suggest that the team should just focus on football. Jamie shot that down as a way to just ignore problems in the world. He brashly told the reporter that he was a big ally, and thought there should be a place in the League for queer players. Queer people add value to the world, he said, and so they definitely add value to a football team.
Trent was glad he had the wall holding him up. He knew it wasn't fair to give Ted credit for all of Jamie's growth over the last three years, but he was surely partially responsible. Trent whipped out his notebook, shoved his glasses on his face, and started writing furiously. After all, this was a continuation of Ted's focus on his players' growth as people, and as a group. While not a football strategy per se, this was Ted's most unique management tactic -- and it was working! Men he would never have predicted to be staunch allies standing up in the fight against oppression. Trent's heart flipped over when he noticed Ted watching Jamie from the other end of the hall, pride clear on his face.
...
Trent went home, thanked the babysitter, and kissed his sleeping daughter on the forehead. He settled into an arm chair with a bottle of beer, his personal journal, and an aim to figure out what to do about Ted Lasso. He wasn't in denial, by a long shot; he knew he cared for Ted. He would date him in a heartbeat, if the circumstances were different. Warmth radiated through his chest when he thought about building a relationship with Ted.
But he was writing a book about Ted's football club and what he'd privately come to think of as The Lasso Way. His credibility as a journalist was already on thin ice, especially where Ted was concerned. It had been obvious at the time that he should tell Ted who'd leaked his personal health information to the press; frankly, he still felt an unease about having written the article in the first place. It felt deeply unethical. And you didn't want to hurt Ted, a voice reminded him.
Trent sighed, and put pen to paper. What to do about inappropriate, no, he struck that out. There was nothing inappropriate about his feelings for Ted. They were both adults, and they were attracted to each other. They had engaged in some inappropriate behavior in the workplace, though it was a grey area since Trent didn't actually work for AFC Richmond... At any rate, the problem wasn't actually having the feelings, but being in constant proximity to the object of his affection and knowing nothing could happen between them.
What to do about inconvenient feelings for Ted Lasso:
1. run away (avoid him)
2. ask him out (for whenever I'm done writing this bloody book, I guess)
3. date someone else?
4. secret hookups (dangerous)
5. pine forever
Trent scowled down at his notebook. None of these were great options. He thought about what he'd heard Ted and Keeley saying, about Ted's goal of getting over his crush. That let numbers 2 and 4 out. Trent didn't think he had the time or energy for number three right now. And he could hardly start avoiding him right as they'd started becoming friends.
Pining it is, Trent thought with a sigh. He ran both hands through his hair, mussing it terribly. Fuck.

How about some Ted/Trent. Domestic, early relationship (not first time)
There are certain things that Ted expects when he stays over at Trent's the first time. The first is that Drew is with her grandparents (that's just good sense). The second is that Trent wakes up with his hair going in several directions (he's right), and the third is that Trent does not wish to talk until he's had half a cup of coffee (Trent warned him).
What he's not expecting and is delighted to discover is that Trent owns a Richmond onesie. A full-body onesie! With a zipper, and a little butt flap.
Trent catches the gleam of delight in Ted's eyes as Ted walks into the kitchen and groans against his coffee mug. "No questions," he says.
"Don't steal my lines," Ted replies. He pours himself a cup of coffee in the empty mug next to the machine, and then he takes the two steps to be right next to Trent's side. He gets an arm around his waist and nuzzles his face into the soft, fleecy shoulder of Trent's onesie.
"My mother made it," Trent says after two sips of coffee. "I run a little cool in the winter."
"You ask me, you're cool all year round," Ted replies.
Trent closes his eyes like he's in pain. "No puns before food."
"Copy that," Ted says, having to bite off the Harry the Hat he wants to add. He's not sure if rhyming wordplay will violate the pun rule. "How 'bout I make us some eggs while you finish warming up?"
Trent turns his head the slightest bit, enough that Ted can see the smile on the edge of his mouth and the warm, welcome pleasure in his eyes. "Fried, if you please."
"My pleasure," Ted says. He kisses Trent's cheek, then his wild hair, and nuzzles his shoulder one more time before he steps away to find out of Trent is an eggs-in-the-carton kind of a guy or eggs-in-the-door sort of fellow.

we now have a total chapter count I'm fairly confident in: 16/21. home stretch!!
Chapter 16: It rains on Sunday. Trent builds a blanket fort with his daughter, and has a conversation with her, then thinks too much and makes a decision.
commentary
this chapter is informally called "it's the hope that kills you"
this chapter is also very important to me and i hope i got it right. idk, you tell me!
in case you were wondering, i wrote the end of this chapter approximately 6 months ago, after it popped into my head as i was walking home. i've been trying not to get ahead of myself too much on this story, trying to enjoy meandering through each chapter as much as y'all, but little bits and bobs arise. just sad dads festering back there as, for example, I wrote trent and ted on the verge of making out outside of trent's hotel in KC
but now they have kissed, and yet trent is twisted up in his own mind about it
trent you fool
