[Review] What the Car? (ATV)
Tumblr media
A similarly silly sequel.
Triband’s What the Golf was a launch title for Apple Arcade and I loved its goofy experimentation. Now (after an interim baseball bat-based game for VR) a followup has launched on the same service, and I again used my Apple TV and a trusty Dualshock 4 to play through its onslaught of zaniness.
Tumblr media
While the Golf game played around liberally with sports ideas, What the Car uses a car with legs as its jumping-off point. The majority of its rapid-fire jokey levels are “get to the end of the course” style, but always changing up how to go about it: one world is themed around everyday work life, so your car is mounted on desk chairs and sneezing your way through the office for two levels. One world is water themed, so your car becomes a catamaran or a shark or a surfer. One of the themes is “longer”, where you might be driving an exceptionally wide car, or using giraffe tongues as a grapple fling. A big part of the drive to continue (pun intended) is just to see what kind of themed mini-challenge they come up with next (and of course what dumb pun they will use to introduce the concept).
Tumblr media
In a game with so much variety, the individual challenges are inevitably going to be a mixed bag and jank is going to creep in at points. Initially I found it rewarding to get gold ratings, find the trading card collectible, and challenge the more difficult “skull levels” but my patience wore down as the worlds progressed, the difficulty escalated, and the levels became more esoteric. While many levels charmed me, the ones that instead frustrated cast a pall over the experience somewhat.
There’s also the inherent iffiness of a “comedy game” to discuss, of whether its humour will land with you. For me What the Car maintained a light goofiness with its bears wearing clothes, and the car’s gormless face and oddball transformations, without dipping into cringey “lolsorandom” attempts. The constant novelty keeps things fresh and amusing.
Tumblr media
The in-game character Develobear has promised more content updates in the future, so as with the normal progression in the game, it will be interesting to see what other silly car ideas they can squeeze out of this concept! But for now What the Car is just a slice of good fun, with a nice cel-shaded art style and an inoffensive sense of humour. Just don’t try to complete it to perfection or the fun will become more “fun-damental flaw”.

What the Golf? (PC)

youtube
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'm a sucker for golf games. Something about playing golf games just helps me to relax and zone out like no other game genre. In fact, I would probably play golf in real life if it weren't so cost restrictive.
That being said, What the Golf? is not a golf game... at least, in the traditional sense... but it is a hoot and half to play!
Developed and published by Triband in 2019, What the Golf is a silly golf... action... puzzle... thing. I don't really know how best to describe it. You are presented with a number of random tasks, usually amounting to getting a ball to a flag through normal golf game mechanics, but sometimes you're getting the golfer himself to the flag, as he flails helplessly around in the air with each hit; or you're driving a little car to the flag, while avoiding hazards like explosive barrels; or you're navigating the hole itself to the ball!
So what we have here, when it comes down to it, is a joke game, and a funny one at that. However, I don't want to dismiss What the Golf as merely a novelty, as the gameplay is actually pretty fun and mildly addictive! I found myself constantly wondering what the game was going throw at me next, which is more than I can say for most AAA games. Like touring Willy Wonka's factory, there's a surprise around every corner of What the Golf, from clever "golf" course puzzles to funny parodies of popular games like Super Hot or Super Meat Boy.
Most of the regular courses are fairly easy, but get a little more challenging should you go for 100% completion.
If you can find the game on sale, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.

Vashwood but they are a pop punk band duo
More info about the AU:
Their music sounds like Green Day, Arctic Monkeys and FoB fused together (if that makes sense)
Wolfwood was the one who started the band, he forcibly pulled Vash in to be the vocalist after most of his bandmates quit
Wolfwood can't sing at ALL and that was the main reason he pulled Vash in. (He smokes like 10 cig packs a day what do you expect)
Vash was extremely insecure at first (also bc he was unfamiliar with rock music) but slowly becomes more confident and builds a stage persona (as Vash the Stampede)
Their design and personalities are a mix of all 3 canons, but mostly maximum

[I.D.: A gifset containing four gifs of the low-poly game WHAT THE GOLF?
Gif 1 shows a man playing golf. He swings golf club back, but instead of hitting the ball, he is launched forward and hits the tee box with a confetti-filled impact.
Gif 2 shows three scenes. In one scene, the player flips a house to move it across a golf course. The next scene shows a yellow monster truck driving thorugh a different golf course as several wrecking balls swing around it. The last scene shows a 2D platformer style stage where a man rides a bike and flips in the air across hilly terrain.
Gif 3 shows two scenes. In one scene, a golf ball is fired towards a green tube while a building fills the sky with smog in the background. In the other scene, the golfball is launched on a regular golf course, striking a car and the car rolls towards the teebox and causes several barrels to explode as it falls off a cliff.
Gif 4 shows three scenes. In one scene, the gameplay is similar to the Guitar Hero games and shows the golf ball trying to hit buttons on a lined path while a character rides a horse in the background to beams of light. The other scene shows a regular golf course, except the tee box moves aside when the golf ball rolls towards it and hits a bush instead. The last scene shows a car being catapulted over another golf course while doing many flips in the air.
end I.D.]
WHAT THE GOLF? is an absurd golf game for people who hate golf! Build levels or complete daily courses as you complete puzzles and challenges full of surprises. With 500 creative levels, try Sporty Sports, It’s Snowtime, A Hole New World, or other incomprehensible levels that make use of toasters, hot dogs, office chairs, and more!
For Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Apple Arcade, and Nintendo Switch.
Developed by Triband, a studio based in Copenhagen, Denmark that worked with Kayode Shonibare-Lewis, a half Nigerian and half Welsh developer currently teaching game design in Sweden. He has also given a talk called “Racial Bias, Reverse Heredity and the Parents of Custom Avatars” about the presence of racial biases within customizeable avatars in games.

finished country flags tier list (took way too long) where tiers are just sorted alphabetically (no way in hell am i sorting them all in order). The color actually lists the tier, but if there were differing reasons for putting them there i divided them up (’triband zone’ to ‘interesting but no’ are the same tier)
Tumblr media
a couple of additional rules i used: i rated the flags based on their current forms (according to wikipedia), even if the tier list maker didnt have it, and if there were more than one version (like the peruvian flag having the option of having the seal on it) i used what i consider to be the better version
any questions please ask i would love to explain anything!

More about my pop punk band AU!! This time introducing Meryl and Milly as the bassist and drummer respectively
The band is called The Humanoid Typhoons now (tentatively), with Vash as the newest member after months of finding a lead singer.
Text for first image:
The Humanoid Typhoons (TriBand AU)
Vash (Lead Singer):
-Was a university student before joining the band
-Insecure about performing onstage but eventually gains confidence
- ’Vash the Stampede’ becomes his onstage persona, notorious for performing dangerous stunts and wild antics (Which help boosted popularity of the band)
Wolfwood (Lead guitarist):
-Only skill in life is playing the guitar
-Raised in a strict Catholic orphanage, listens to punk rock as escapism
-Forcefully drags Vash into the band
Meryl (Bassist & Backing Vocals):
-Basically the band’s manager & driver
- Will smack you with her bass if you make fun of her height
- Listens to Kpop/Jpop more than rock
Milly (Drummer):
-Solves most of the band’s tension
-Actually knows more bands than all three of her bandmates combined
- Irreplaceable drummer
