I can’t think of books with similar vibe, but I can recommend those I’ve read to get rid of the bad aftertaste:

The Shadows between Us by Tricia Levenseller- different kind of shadow powers, not physically badass heroine, but ruthless and actually hungry for power, Slytherin romance; light reading for fun

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik- Slavic & Jewish inspiration, enemies to lovers (2×), badass ladies winning thanks to their wits and humanity; demands more attention from reader

The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black- he hates that he has feelings for her, originally abusive behaviour (They’re not in relationship at that point.), lies over lies, powercouple ruling the realm, truly outsider heroine, Jude would have Alina for breakfast- sunpowers or not; well-written YA, obsessed

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab- the embodiement of Darkness, toxic relationship, immortality, he ISN’T human at all, romance-wise- this is what LB would want us to see in Darklina if Alina had personality; almost a year later and I’m still not over it, beautiful, poetic

✩🧜‍♀️⚓️Review:

A satisfying conclusion to a high stakes adventure!

Picking up a few weeks from where the first installment left off, Alosa Kalligan finds herself in a deadly race against her father after learning of a secret he has kept from her. Despite the danger, Alosa knows she will recover the legendary hidden treasure first with the help of her a crew and the still unfairly attractive and unexpectedly loyal, first mate Riden, who once took her captive.

New book, same cunning, ruthless Alosa. I loved getting to see Alosa’s dynamic as a captain in “Daughter of the Siren Queen”! She is so devoted to her crew, willing to sacrifice her life without hesitation for them, and owning up to her missteps. This only deepened my admiration for her character.

Alosa’s romance with Riden definitely isn’t the focal point of this book, which is something I normally wouldn’t mind, but I couldn’t help but feel like something about their chemistry was off. Instead of their relationship deepening, it was repeatedly sabotaged and not enough time was spent on how it was mended (in my opinion) in the end. All this to say, there was a lot of back and forth and I was eager for them to just be together considering that their romance is a subplot.

One of my favorite aspects of “Daughter of the Pirate King” was the promise of sirens and this book did not disappoint on that front! Levenseller leans more into the fantasy genre with this one and I loved being able to delve more into Alosa’s siren nature and learn more about roots.

just finished The Shadows Between us. Tricia Levenseller has done it again. I’ve heard critiques about her work not having good plot or conflict but everyone needs a light and easy read from time to time that you can just enough without stress or suspense ( or well, too much of it ) and her books are perfect for that

I’m not entirely sure I’m making sense at the moment, I slept for a grand total of 35 minutes in the past 24 hours. But yeah, 8.7/10. Sometimes I feel like stabbing people too, Alessandra

Watching Kallias and Alessandra slowly fall for each other while being in denial about it was actually so entertaining
