Hero's Spirit: A Vision of Nightshade

All For One did not reach the age of over 200 by not listening to his medical professionals.

He was still looking for a faster way to regain his full vision, but until then the Doctor had recommended him using a cyberpathy quirk to look through security cameras and such, so he wouldn't be out of practice with light levels, colors, and shape recognition.

He didn't enjoy it, because he disliked having his consciousness out of his body (at least unless it was going to be a permanent transfer). But he recognized the value of the Doctor's orders and did a few short bursts a day.

During one of these he noticed Tomura's little rival, Midoriya. (He would allow it until All Might finally chose a successor, then he'd encourage Tomura to switch over.) Midoriya was talking to a young woman on the sidewalk he seemed to know, who was speaking to him fondly. Maybe she had been his baby sitter when younger, or a neighbor? He focused the camera in on her.

She was beautiful, with long dark hair and purple eyes and lips that made a stark contract over pale skin. All For One felt his pulse quicken through his weak connection to his body as his heart pounded in his chest. His mouth when dry and his palms began to sweat. What was this feeling? It had been so long since he felt it? Ah, right. Abject Terror.

He slammed back in to his body and immediately opened the communication like to the League of Villain's current hideout.

"Shigeraki Tomura you will immediately cease any activity targeting Midoriya and any focusing one UA class 1A that might involve him." Tomura, predictably, did not like this announcement. "No! You said I could destroy the things I hate! And I HATE him."

"Tomura if you continue this vendetta we will both die."

"This is stupid! I'm not afraid of All Might-" "Nor am I. He is a pathetic worm that will one day die at your hand. But Midoriya is under the protection of Nightshade." Fear shone in speaking her name.

"Never heard of a hero by that name." Tomura began scratching at his neck.

"Not a hero, no." Kurogiri tilted his head in thought. "Was Nightshade not the name of the first villain?"

"It was. It is. I knew her well, as we had been allies for a time. She didn't seek power, but wielded it effortlessly. Personal power, power over others. She had amassed an army of those with powerful quirks even at the dawn of them and laid waste to the United States. She had been fond of the first hero, you see, though he was never credited as such. And the American Government not only killed him, they covered up all he had done, to ensure he was forgotten and their mistake never came to light. She crippled the country which at the time boasted the strongest military force in the world." "But she was stopped. I mean, America's still a country."

All For One shook his head. "No. She stopped when anyone even tangentially involved in the decision and those who defended them were dead. No quirk affected her, and he quirk could not be stolen. She is an untouchable wildcard who will slaughter thousands to make her point. She has chosen Midoriya as hers. Do Not Touch Midoriya Again!"

I did a vine theme for pumpkin carving this year. A pumpkin pumpkin and a rose pumpkin.

I'd made a poll asking whether to do vines or draw Dan and Valerie from Danny Phantom, or both. ...And although 'vines' won, the idea of adding something Dan and Val related was too compelling. The thought of deep red roses with their thorns being like Valerie. ...And, well, I suppose Dan's like a big heavy pumpkin being thrown at stuff?

I tried making the plants wrap around an object representing them, Dan in a D shape and Valerie in a triangle shape. Though it's not very noticeable.

I should've checked. #(the weapon was once misidentified as her Ecto-Grenade Launcher; but that's actually a different weapon.) #I also thought the way pumpkin flowers are oddly brighter in the center might give a ghostly look. Though I hadn't carved them very well. #I would've gone about it differently if that had been the second pumpkin. I'm always too nervous during my first pumpkins. #These are the largest pie pumpkins I've bought so far. They're a little bigger than two years ago and a lot bigger than last year. #They're 25 and 24 inches in circumference. #...It took a day and a half to carve each one. #The 1st pumpkin I scraped out the vines. But for the 2nd one I did a vector technique on the vines and leaves where I drew outlines & dug. #...I still think pumpkins aren't really vines but it's simpler to say that as a shorthand for 'climbing plant'. #I might add some alternate views in a reblog later.

I learned about the pollination strategy of Lords-and-Ladies (Arum maculatum) this week and it’s SO FUCKED UP.

... Like. It basically acts like a carnivorous plant but then it doesn’t eat the insect it just traps it for reproduction instead! This plant plays sick psychosexual mind games!!

MOST PLANTS WOULD JUST PRODUCE NECTAR. BUT INSTEAD:

an innocent fly finds a hot leaf that smells temptingly of rotting things and shit. Fly thinks “oh nice fresh shit and decaying animals i can eat that”

The hot leaf is a fucking trap! It’s so incredibly slippy that any insect that lands on it immediately slides down into into a saw trap pollen chamber.

It can’t crawl out the way it came because the walls are covered in one-way spikes.

Insect has to fight its way thru a spike chamber, which is 15c hotter than the surrounding environment, getting covered in pollen all the while

and the insect gets released! In the hopes that it will make the same mistake again and carry the pollen to another Lords-and-ladies flower!

i have an issue with lore olympus's depiction of persephone's "goddess of spring" thing. first of all she shouldn't even be the goddess of spring yet, as spring shouldn't even exist yet. but whatever rachel doesn't understand / care about the myths she’s adapting what else is new.

but also i don't quite understand why, especially in the beginning, rachel chose to make everyone (including persephone) act like "goddess of spring" is like.. an unimportant job? like she's "just" the goddess of spring? does rachel not understand how fucking important the end of winter and the coming of spring would be to a society that relied heavily on agriculture for their food?

idk it seems like rachel thinks spring is just flowers and it shows :-/

I'm fascinated that Vash, Knives, and Wolfwood don't know their birth families and how that plays out with their guardians.

Vash's philosophies are shaped by Rem; Knives rebels/reframes Rem's words to suit his own agenda ("There's so much we have to do to make sure it [Tesla's death by human experimentation/callousness] doesn't happen again." To me, it's a "I learned drinking at my father's knee" v. "I saw my father drinking and resolved not to be like him" relationship, and many people have written amazing metas on this!

Wolfwood has had two prominent guardians in his life—Melanie and Chapel (depending on which version, Chapel actually raised Wolfwood for a bit). It's pretty formative in that Wolfwood before the Eye of Michael is a caring individual but also hard-nosed to a certain degree (becoming a caretaker figure, knowing the orphanage is struggling, etc.), while Chapel teaches him that connections drag you down and that you must make an immediate decision (as the world/job is harsh and unforgiving). His experiences with Melanie and Chapel also shaped his self-sacrificing nature: to help with the greater good, whatever that means—but Wolfwood rebels against Chapel as Knives did with Rem, which (unlike Knives and Rem) is a good thing.

Again, none of these characters know their birth origins or express a lot of curiosity about finding out more, and that nature/nurture dynamic fascinates me because they're a) very much their own individuals but b) still burdened by who raised them.

It's a compelling theme in Trigun that it's not necessarily how you start out; it's the experience and guidances (or lack thereof) do. There are a lot of self-determination/fate interpretations among Vash, Knives, and Wolfwood—what path are you on? Did you create it? Is it shaped? Can you go without a path or make a different one? How does it all end? Can you truly escape where you came from? (More thoughts in the tags lol)

You were as lost as you weren't; it was both simple and complex. A single tile sat waiting at the end. Beyond it, a pond. The tile regularly switched patterns, and which pattern a traveler stepped on determined their fate. If they were lucky, they'd be teleported back to the manor. If they were unlucky, they'd meet a much more grisly fate.

Another mini-arc of Fault is being released. Fault is an SCP SBI AU that deals with themes of dealing with the trauma and guilt of surviving, The SCP Foundation’s system of oppression, and naturally found family. The first arc is Tommy and Tubbo-centric, focusing on the sacrifices needed to survive, and then broadens to fully introduce the rest of the Sleepy Bois, alternative morality systems, and new terrible mental health strategies. While the story does get dark, it makes the moments of love shine all the brighter. Even if humanity hates them, these monsters have each other’s backs.
