Blackbird by Sam Humphries. Art by Jen Bartel. Coloured Triona Farrell.
Read time: <1 Day
Rating: 4/5 Stars
The Quote: I'm always the crazy baby. Always the one blowing it.
No cops, no family... All I have is Sharpie...
Who should be dead by now.
But he's back. And he's... talking? — Nina Rodriguez
This is an enjoyable graphic novel. I particularly appreciate the art and colouring. That wonderful glow of the supernatural elements the cool glow of the Iridium, the warm of the Zon, the captivating of the Polaris and the counterbalances of Jackal and the Beacon. The extraness of all the outfits for the heads of cabals and many of the paragons works so well. These are very wealthy people who want to flaunt their money. Nina's style is fantastic her style gets braver as time goes on and she gains confidence. Clint is brilliant we only see him once in all his paragon glory and both styles suit him so so well. Sharpie is so good in the way he is written and drawn as time goes on and circumstances change he changes. Even his speech is done well. Nina and Clint's not relationship suits. Clint represents safety, information and potential for Nina I like them together. Also, there is no denying he is drawn as an attractive man. The plot is fairly easy to follow and enjoyable. That is all I wanted from it.
It appears that Blackbird has ended up finishing here at the end of issue six. To me that is disappointing. It is certainly set up to go further if Humphries and Bartel so wished. Don't get me wrong this does end in a satisfying way, Nina is empowered and it could be left here. But the last scenes definitely left a feeling that it was intended to be carried on with a manipulative power, a fresh animosity, a new power and a feeling of possibility. I say it looks like it finished here but the last was published in 2019 it is possible that covid has interrupted the writing schedule but something makes me wants to say it's finished.
After reading this I was left with the resonating similarities to The Wicked + The Divine (volume one The Faust Act). It's the power and light in the illustrations and the twin ideas of hidden powers and female empowerment. While The Wicked + The Divine uses mythology as a backbone this uses family. Nina and Laura are both a bit confused about their place in the world but truly fascinated by their worlds powers, the paragons and the Pantheon respectively. But Nina is a bit less ruthless than Laura and shows her soft side.
