Anthurium big bird

Such an outstanding plant to grow, I really can't take my eyes off of him. This is a pretty rare anthurium big red bird. It is part of the pachyneurium division also called " bird nest". I've grown her for about 6 months.

I love the formation of the new leaves and the purple veins that come at later as the leaf ages. The care is simple:

- Bright to medium indirect light

- Let the soil dry between watering sessions and then water thoroughly.

- I haven't fertilizer her yet. I'll update in the future.

- High humidity (70-90%) is ideal, but regular humidity (55-70%) is ok too.

The World's Forests Are Doing Much Better Than We Think

You might be surprised to discover... that many of the world’s woodlands are in a surprisingly good condition. The destruction of tropical forests gets so much (justified) attention that we’re at risk of missing how much progress we’re making in cooler climates.

That’s a mistake. The slow recovery of temperate and polar forests won’t be enough to offset global warming, without radical reductions in carbon emissions. Even so, it’s evidence that we’re capable of reversing the damage from the oldest form of human-induced climate change — and can do the same again.

Take England. Forest coverage now is greater than at any time since the Black Death nearly 700 years ago, with some 1.33 million hectares of the country covered in woodlands. The UK as a whole has nearly three times as much forest as it did at the start of the 20th century.

That’s not by a long way the most impressive performance. China’s forests have increased by about 607,000 square kilometers since 1992, a region the size of Ukraine. The European Union has added an area equivalent to Cambodia to its woodlands, while the US and India have together planted forests that would cover Bangladesh in an unbroken canopy of leaves.

Logging in the tropics means that the world as a whole is still losing trees. Brazil alone removed enough woodland since 1992 to counteract all the growth in China, the EU and US put together. Even so, the planet’s forests as a whole may no longer be contributing to the warming of the planet. On net, they probably sucked about 200 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year between 2011 and 2020, according to a 2021 study. The CO2 taken up by trees narrowly exceeded the amount released by deforestation. That’s a drop in the ocean next to the 53.8 billion tons of greenhouse gases emitted in 2022 — but it’s a sign that not every climate indicator is pointing toward doom...

More than a quarter of Japan is covered with planted forests that in many cases are so old they’re barely recognized as such. Forest cover reached its lowest extent during World War II, when trees were felled by the million to provide fuel for a resource-poor nation’s war machine. Akita prefecture in the north of Honshu island was so denuded in the early 19th century that it needed to import firewood. These days, its lush woodlands are a major draw for tourists.

It’s a similar picture in Scandinavia and Central Europe, where the spread of forests onto unproductive agricultural land, combined with the decline of wood-based industries and better management of remaining stands, has resulted in extensive regrowth since the mid-20th century. Forests cover about 15% of Denmark, compared to 2% to 3% at the start of the 19th century.

Even tropical deforestation has slowed drastically since the 1990s, possibly because the rise of plantation timber is cutting the need to clear primary forests. Still, political incentives to turn a blind eye to logging, combined with historically high prices for products grown and mined on cleared tropical woodlands such as soybeans, palm oil and nickel, mean that recent gains are fragile.

There’s no cause for complacency in any of this. The carbon benefits from forests aren’t sufficient to offset more than a sliver of our greenhouse pollution. The idea that they’ll be sufficient to cancel out gross emissions and get the world to net zero by the middle of this century depends on extraordinarily optimistic assumptions on both sides of the equation.

Still, we should celebrate our success in slowing a pattern of human deforestation that’s been going on for nearly 100,000 years. Nothing about the damage we do to our planet is inevitable. With effort, it may even be reversible.

"Simon, come in."

Ghost isn't quite sure why Price had called him to his office. He's been downright docile this past while. Between his new bond with Hugo, his deepening relationship with Soap, and a mild injury to his shoulder, he's been spending most of his time parked on base whittling away the hours before the next mission.

He takes a seat in one of the Captain's mismatched chairs. Price takes a long drag of his cigar and Ghost tilts his chin, responding in kind.

"There's no easy way to say this son..." He pauses as if he's weighing his words. "I'm glad that you and Soap are getting close. And I support it I do this isn't about that."

He'd be a hypocrite if it was, Ghost thinks, and Nikolai would be inconsolable.

"Guess It's best to just to come out and say it..." Simon tilts his head in question.

"You can't buy sex toys on the company card."

If he'd been drinking anything it would be splattered up the inside of his mask.

"Fucking what??"

"I can see the receipts son and so can the MPO." His Captain's lips are pulled back in an uncomfortable grimace.

"I don't know what the fuck you're talking about cap." He leans back in his chair, arms crossed defiantly. All that shit was on his personal card.

"I'm not judging you or your decisions Simon I just can't justify it as a business expense."

"Can I at least see the receipt? Bit unfair not to show a man what he's accused of innit?"

Solemnly, Price shuffles through a stack of papers on his desk; holding out the printed off the email notification from the military post office when he finds it.

Simon takes the page with no small incredulity, scanning it over with a careful eye.

"Fuck my Pink Princess is here? That was a bitch to get through customs."

If possible, Price's face screws up more.

"I don't want details Simon, just your word that it won't happen again."

"Price it's a Philodendron."

"I'm shocked and appalled that you think I'd know what that is."

Ignoring the complaints of his scandalized Captain, Simon reaches for the small box on the desk, producing a knife to carefully slit the tape. All the while ignoring the increasingly vocal complaints coming from the other side of the desk.

"I don't want to see it son, it's none of my business what you get up to behind closed doors just- the fuck is that?"

"A Pink Princess Philodendron." Simon mutters as he examines the carefully packaged plant.

"...Simon thats a plant."

He grunts.

"Simon that was 150 quid."

He grunts again.

"Simon you used the company card for a £150 pink plant."

"Plus shipping."

"For fucking why??"

"It matches Hugo's coloring."

...

"Get out of my office."

One of Brazil's top scientists, Eneas Salati, once said, "The best thing you could do for the Amazon rainforest is to blow up all the roads." He wasn't joking. And he had a point. In an article published in Nature, my colleagues and I show that illicit, often out-of-control road building is imperiling forests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. The roads we're studying do not appear on legitimate maps. We call them "ghost roads." What's so bad about a road? A road means access. Once roads are bulldozed into rainforests, illegal loggers, miners, poachers and landgrabbers arrive. Once they get access, they can destroy forests, harm native ecosystems and even drive out or kill indigenous peoples. This looting of the natural world robs cash-strapped nations of valuable natural resources. Indonesia, for instance, loses around A$1.5 billion each year solely to timber theft. All nations have some unmapped or unofficial roads, but the situation is especially bad in biodiversity-rich developing nations, where roads are proliferating at the fastest pace in human history.

IKEA box terrarium

I created these two terrariums in December 2020. I barely water them (because there are some gaps in the glass so it is not a legit terrarium 😂 but about 80% legit).

Many plants have come, gone, and come back on their own. This time I see one of the alocasias. 😱

girl gelp i literally woke up thinking about dwarven anatomy and specifically about sand and beach dwarves..... i am so autistic about this....

#crops #sand dwarves are built not to withstand the mines but for the heat of deserts and sandstorms. theyre skilled glassmakers.#beach dwarves are built to survive tropical storms and hurricanes and high water pressure. they carve driftwood and craft with beach glass-#--shells and shark teeth that wash ashore but never take more than they need #i think milder climates and environments (fields plains etc) dont have 'native' dwarves bc they dont suit dwarven lifestyles and natures #i have a lot of opinions abt dwarves im sorry but. yeehaw #for the most part bc there is no use for their wiry beards beachborne are free to grow or cut them as they please #their beards prevent black lung/sand/spore inhalation in other environments but it doesnt help with diving #(in my head diving is a huge part of the cultural trade of beachborne dwarves)#im sorry my brain likes to play with concepts for fantasy species like dolls!!! i love fantasy genetics!!!!!

Ultimate tell of most USAmerican movies/shows being produced in California is when the foley artists put loon calls in scenes that are, in ascending order of hilarity, (1) during the dead of winter when all the lakes are frozen over, (2) way too far south, or (3) not remotely close to water of any kind

#foley artists holding up a butterfly that makes loon noises: is this the sound of wilderness?#(i mean yes it is but only if you're on an unfrozen lake in a boreal forest sort of environment)#this is specifically about tlovm which had them both in whitestone (lol) and near the rq's temple (more forgiveable but not in winter)#however i've heard many far more egregious cases of loon calls in tropical rainforests??? loon calls in DESERTS???#it's SUCH a distinctive sound and it makes me chuckle every time #they are legit everywhere in film but apparently most viewers aren't familiar enough with them to notice #often i get the impression they're meant to be mistaken for owls? which is only possible if the viewer has never heard a loon OR an owl #like i am not by any means a bird expert but the sound is just! that! unmistakable!!!#my posts
