my family is planning a trip to England in the summer, we'll be in Manchester and the surrounding area. What foods and history things would you recommend?
Oh golly. If you can manage it there's a great "history of Manchester through food" tour run by Scranchester (I've not been on it but I really want to)
Up in Rawtenstall there's Fitzpatrick's, the last surviving Temperance Bar from the temperance movement
Have to shout out Bury Market of course (less history there but it's cool)
More general history-wise there's the Peterloo Memorial, People's History Museum (my beloved), and if you want to get into the thread side of things the Science and Industry museum's cool and there's Quarry Bank Mill (you can tour the apprentice house) and Helmshore Mills Textile Museum if you're heading further afield (do not attempt the latter without a car)
And if you are renting a car and want to get out into the countryside for a day you can go to Clitheroe Castle, which is a very good castle and also on the edge of the Trough of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Hidden away in a valley, This steam crane has sat here for 100 years !
May 7, 2023     The Jumbles quarry steam crane has sat hidden away in a valley in the Forest of Bowland for 100 years. The abandoned steam crane is a wonderful piece of Edwardian engineering. It is a Smiths of Rodley steam crane. It was used at jumbles quarry in the trough of Bowland to quarry stone for the Stocks reservoir project. The Stocks reservoir was a reservoir for fresh drinking water built by the Fylde water company in 1921. There is also an abandoned disused tramway across the moorland that crosses the River Hodder. The tramway is in a state of disrepair its a 3 ft gauge that took the stone across the moor to the reservoir civil engineering project. A wonder setting in the heart of Lancashire.

It would have been even better if Lisa and Winnie could have been there but it was nice to get out for a muddy New Years Day walk with Sheridan. Happy 2023 everyone! (at Trough Of Bowland) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm5GZ3itRJV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Stepping through my post-doc archive: July 2021
Well, July 2021 seems to have been a bit of a slow-down, although I do see a screen-grab from the Submittable page showing active and rejected submissions - and ONE acceptance (woo!).
The big shock of that month, honestly, was the trip we made to my partner's home city of Preston, in the heart of post-industrial NW England. Clearly we spent our time in the "cute" bits but I was astonished how much civic loveliness there was in the heart of the city, as well as reminding myself how gorgeous the adjacent countryside is, around the Trough of Bowland for instance. In Preston itself, Miller Park was a revelation, as was Winckley Square.
Tumblr media
Wasn't too surprised to learn that the redevelopment of Winckley Square was controversial locally as deemed pretty expensive (I mean, I'm not sure that it was a lot of money compared with the going rate for urban infrastructure but I get that it was expensive relative to local wages or working with a mate to put a patio in the back garden).
Tumblr media
The part of it I really loved though - of course, as a once-upon-a-time historian - was this circular path at the centre of the garden:
On the image, there's a faint series of "spokes" showing in dark text on the light background of the path. These are the names of former residents of the square and their dates and occupations, arranged to point towards the part of the square where the person used to live.
Tumblr media
And also in the July screengrab, a picture of the Kakapo which was part of my prompt-inspiration for "Rage is the Thing With Wings" - my poem that was featured by Maureen Thorson in NaPoWriMo 2021 and which appears, in edited form, in my third pamphlet -
Rage is the Thing With Wings -
Rage is an absolute avian oddity,
nocturnal,
solitary.
Rage occupies the same
home range for many years.
Rage is mottled, moss green.
Rage forages on the ground
and climbs high into trees.
Rage often leaps from branches
and, departing, flaps its wings,
but, at best, can only manage
a controlled plummet.
Rage is – unexpectedly – vegetarian:
leaves, buds, flowers,
fern fronds, bark, roots,
rhizomes, and bulbs,
fruit and seeds.
Rage’s diet varies according to the season.
Rage breeds in summer and autumn, but
only in years of good fruit abundance.
Rage is a lek breeder,
a breeding approach
characterized with
aggregations of
sexually keen,
displaying
males.
The males are visited by
any receptive females,
appraising the males’
courtship displays
and proactively
choose mates
yet receive
no direct
benefits
such as assistance in parenting.
Rage is critically endangered,
and is therefore the focus
of considerable conservation
attention.
It is very unlikely that any Rage exists,
other than at a few managed sites.
Rage usually freezes
and relies on cryptic colouration
to hide itself from predators.
It is a completely ineffective strategy
to avoid predators that hunt by smell.
Rage has no close relatives.
Grief and Anger are the only species
with which Rage might be confused.

The Trough of Bowland Ancient Landscape, Lancashire.
Famous for being the routeway for the Pendle Witch Trials in Lancaster, this landscape has likely served as a much older trackway for ancient communities.
