[Update: If anyone saw an @ for ladyofeden’s-blog on this it’s because this WIP was made before the thieves had been exposed. I only just realised her former blog was on it and now has been taken off]
Here's two WIPs (well one WIP + a last line) for Silva's Hope and The True Sinners from Far Cry The Silver Chronicles PLUS some music.
Here's Silva's introduction to Jacob's right-hand man, Alexander Khaos in Silva's Hope. Also Jess is here. Reminder that this is still under a lot of work, so this scene may or may not change in the near future. Enjoy the snippet below:
Silva stood up, giving the Whitetail corpse one last glance up and down, turning to face Jess.
Bow and arrow still in hand, but her focus shifted from the foliage to the deputy, the young and vengeful huntress regarded her with little more than pursed lips and a raised brow as she jerked her head over to the unfortunate Whitetail.
"Is he the one Eli is searching for?" she questioned, looking the mutilated corpse up and down, not batting an eye at the dried blood that soaked the Whitetail.
Silva herself kept a steady face, though the desire to show her disgust towards the barbaric display was no less prevalent. It reminded her of the methods of executions back on the Archipelagos; needlessly cruel to send a message.
"Yeah, he fits the description Eli gave," she looked over to the corpse once more, frown unseen by Jess, "At least from what I can discern."
"You see what we mean now? Jacob's a sick fuck, much like the rest of his asshole siblings," Jess spat out, sneering at the display, "They preach about how they want to "save" people and "free" us from our so called sins. Then they go an pull shit like this, or worse, let psychopaths like the Cook burn families alive. Fucking liars."
Something they have in common with the Congregation, Silva noted, remembering all the propaganda that spewed out the need of servitude and duty of men and women, all strewn around the Overcity and the Minas, all brushing aside the rampant beatings, false persecution and execution of Tumultites and sympathizers alike.
It seemed the more time she spent here, the more unpleasant Joseph and his cult became. She wondered how long it would take until she discovered something truly unacceptable. Would it make a difference if she called Joseph out on it? Probably not, she reasoned, Prophets are only focused on the glory they get from preaching "God's Will". Anything else is just a means to get to that end.
She exhaled roughly, dashing away further thought as her left arm ached. Though her rescue from John's envoy thanks to Jerome was only a couple days ago, the aches from the crash did not cease, her left arm feeling the worst. Her right arm was more lucky, thankfully.
Kamski's scolding was still fresh on her mind. If it was up to him, he would have locked them both in his clinic while the war raged on. Sedate her if he had to. But both knew that as long as one of her limbs was not too damaged, she would still go on to fight.
What a miracle her right arm was just as good with a gun as her left.
"We should head back. Eli and Wheaty would want the news-"
An arrow cut past Jess' hood and struck Silva in the leg. The Deputy could only stare at the arrow protruding from her leg, and looked to the trees.
She noticed movement from the branches and pointed them out to Jess as she tried to call out. But her voice slurred, no coherent word coming out right, and the familiar sparkles that belonged to Bliss engulfed her vision.
Jess had turned her back to face the trees, bow and arrow at the ready, though Silva stumbled and fell onto her back as the world diluted into a realm of colors and butterflies.
She could barely hear what Jess was shouting, though a massive thud that sounded like an earthquake shook the Earth gave her most coherent thoughts an indication that her companion was out of commission.
Still fighting for consciousness, Silva heard the echoes of crunched leaves and commands.
Above her, a new figure looked down on her, a man with brown hair and dark hazel eyes with flecks of gray. His attire was that of which the Chosen wore, though he lacked the red hood, and his vest shirt was black, with his sleeveless overcoat a dark gray. He smirked, shaking his head as he spoke.
"Salutations to you Deputy, you were quite a struggle to find," he greeted, his imitation of a southern accent quite noticeable even when Blissed, "Thankfully Eli just couldn't let go of a chance to rescue one of his own. Don't worry, that fella was dead before we hacked up his corpse. Unpleasant work but it needed to attract your attention."
He knelt down get a closer look at her, his fingers tracing stroking the healed scratches on her cheek. She shuddered involuntarily from the contact, which felt numb and yet made her stomach recoil from the cold in his hands. He stopped his inspection upon noticing this, eyes softening before becoming stoic once more, thankfully retracting his hand.
"I'm surprised you're still conscious. By now most would have succumbed to the Bliss, which I'm sure you will shortly. Some tolerance you have there," he kept his eyes on her, chewing on his lower lip as he pondered, curiosity clearly piqued, "I'm sure Jacob will be pleased to know."
Silva tried to reply, tell this Chosen to go "fuck off" or some variation, but her tongue felt like weight on her mouth, and her eyes started to shut as the sky got brighter.
The Chosen watched this, his smirk returning as he stood up, then groaned as softly smacked his head, "Forgotten my manners yet again! Now, you better remember this, Deputy, because you're going to see me a lot more than you think. Name's Alexander Khaos."
"And Jacob's been dying for a talk with ya," Alexander's distorted voice revealed as Silva's thoughts were shrouded in the desire to close her eyes. And she found no reason to protest any longer as darkness started to consume her vision.
Here's a Last Paragraph for The True Sinners. View the start of a terrible beautiful friendship between Kamski and Tammy. Paragraph(s) below.
[Kamski] leaned over the small kiddie pool, the water slightly tinted pink from whatever blood managed to get into the water. Untied rope still tethered to the pool's edge, likely to be used to tie prisoner's feet into the water. A wooden chair stood strong in the middle, though Kamski would have preferred it to be something stronger... like metal. Though wood was a step up from plastic. The unused ECT device on the table caught his attention, the face cloth that laid next to it. Tammy stared at him from the doorway, arms crossed as she inspected his movements.
Weary, ruthless and not afraid to get dirty? Where was she on the archipelagos? Kamski thought to himself, thoroughly impressed with her station. Turning to her, he questioned with amusement, "A kiddie pool?"
Tammy blinked at him, unbothered by the question, just shrugged with undeterred confidence. Kamski snorted, and looked back to the what was essentially a large plastic tub. "Quite a humiliating way to go... more than I could ever do back in my homeland anyway," he commented in praise, envisioning an Enforcer tied the very chair Kamski stared at, face covered with a wet cloth as he screamed from the shocks coursing throughout his body. Begging right up until he was completely fried. Oh, what Kamski would have traded to see Lapis in such a state.
And lastly a song for Far Cry The Silver Chronicles. A rather sensual one between John Seed and Nadi Sinclair.

"Use the sleeves on my sweater Let's have an adventure Head in the clouds but my gravity's centered Touch my neck and I'll touch yours You in those little high-waisted shorts, oh
She knows what I think about And what I think about One love, two mouths One love, one house No shirt, no blouse Just us, you find out Nothing that I wouldn't wanna tell you about, no Cause it's too cold, for you here and now So let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater
And if I may just take your breath away I don't mind if there's not much to say Sometimes the silence guides our minds To move to a place so far away The goosebumps start to raise The minute that my left hand meets your waist And then I watch your face Put my finger on your tongue 'cause you love the taste, yeah These hearts adore Everyone the other beats hardest for Inside this place is warm Outside it starts to pour
Coming down One love, two mouths One love, one house No shirt, no blouse Just us, you find out Nothing that I wouldn't wanna tell you about, no, no, no Cause it's too cold, for you here and now So let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater.
Cause it's too cold, for you here and now So let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater.
Whoa."

I don’t understand why VC fans that are genuinely upset about and deeply dislike the stuff they’re finding out about the AMC show keep…. engaging with AMC IWTV content and posting about it? Like, I’m sure it’s not fun for them and it’s certainly not fun for the people who are enjoying the show…. Like, clearly this show isn’t going to magically turn into something they like, why keep baiting themselves?
These kinds of asks are so, so, so hard! Writing a short response feels too limited, but writing a lot feels like I’m doing too much...  if this makes anyone at least consider the issue(s) in a different light, then it was worth the effort.
And you know, answering this shouldn’t be so hard, we’re talking about fictional vampires, can we all keep that in mind? It’s sad that this is the heart of so much tension right now.
People are not going to stop criticizing media. That much is true. We can try to unpack why they do, and I will take a small stab at it in this response.
Okay so here are my TL:DR main points:
1) Curate your experience.  People are not going to stop criticizing media. You can stop yourself from seeing it, though. The block button is your personal bouncer! Or, use Xkit’s blacklist feature which is more of a softblock.
2) I still say it's unfair to call the criticism vs. praise all purely a binary. There's a spectrum of feeling that isn't linear, bc you can like some changes and not like others.
3) People criticize media, and everything in VC. People are criticizing this bc they are getting smtg they didn't expect, and want to say so. Rollin Jones has even invited criticism, as a person in the film industry, he knows his work product is subject to criticism!
4) Criticism of VC in general, including about the show, from what I’ve seen on Tumblr, is meant more as intellectual exercise and a way to find like-minded people. How many decades have we criticized VC? “VC is a trilogy!”, or “X is a problematic character and you can’t like him!” or “Anne Rice endorses the problematic content she writes in real life, it’s propaganda!” People are seeking other like-minded people, and they make their arguments. Whether this comes from deeply disliking/upset by their topic, it varies a lot, but I would say that some of the criticism could be that, but some is coming from other emotional states, some more neutral than negative. Some is curiosity more than a negative place. Some people really enjoy criticizing things! Academic fans, for sure.
5) People who enjoy the AMC show: Try not to take criticism of the show as a personal attack. If you’re hurt by that criticism, block the person! From what I’ve seen, criticism is often disclaimered with “this is only my opinion.” Even if it is intended as a personal attack, it’s words on a screen. Nothing more. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” - Eleanor Roosevelt. People have to control their feelings and emotions because each person is responsible for their own feelings and emotions.
6) Engagement is engagement, negative or positive, and that’s ratings for the show. Content that draws engagement must be compelling to do both! After all, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. People don’t engage with content that’s boring. So the AMC show, at the very least, doesn’t appear to have committed the sin of being boring, and that’s a crime, canonically.
Rollin Jones: [X geffenplayhouse, Aug 20, 2015]:
“If there’s any problem with me as a writer, it’s that I’m crippled by, ‘Oh, I don’t wanna bore them!’” he says. “Mostly, it’s fun. There’s no other reason to do it. Nobody’s getting rich off it. So you want to have some fun, drink with some actors after, make sure one or two of your cast are having sex with each other. You wanna have created some love.”
Interview with the Vampire:
Tumblr media
~~~~~
1) Curate your experience
Ultimately, we're all sharing this space together, at least for now. Anyone who doesn't want to see IWTV AMC criticism, or, conversely, anyone who doesn't want to see ppl enjoying it, the block feature is your personal bouncer! I also use Xkit’s Blacklist feature, which is a friendlier softblock.
2) I still say it's unfair to call the criticism vs. praise all purely a binary.
Some people love the changes AMC is making and some people don't, but I still say it's unfair to call it all purely a binary. There's a spectrum of feeling that isn't linear, bc you can like some changes and not like others.* Personally, I get why they had to age Claudia up, bc of the child actor labor laws, I assume that was of the issues back in 1994, too (tho, they did audition a ton of 5-6 yr olds, and none of them could act as well as Kirsten, so I think talent was - and is! - still a bigger factor than canon compliance for that role, it is for me, anyway, if I was casting that character).
*Obviously, there will always be the outliers who well and truly want a book-accurate adaptation and those who want a completely revamped version (pun intended!) that brings the story up to more current issues and morality. Neither can be totally satisfied bc the visual medium is necessarily different than the act of reading! Even the original LOTR trilogy, widely praised for canon-compliance, still changed things. I haven’t seen anyone on tumblr really seriously deeply upset about that, we all know here that that’s impossible. There are probably people on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube who think 100% canon compliance is possible, and to them, I say, Wow you must be fun at parties 😅.
3) People criticize media, and everything in VC.
People who don't express their criticism/opinions are essentially accepting what they're given.
Re: fictional content, people who are served something that isn't up to their expectations criticize it. "I ordered X and it's not X!" You know? We want to know why it's not what we expected, was it an intentional change, like someone decided to give me blueberry pancakes when I ordered chocolate chip? Maybe I should prefer blueberry pancakes, bc fruit is the healthier option, but it's still not what I expected, and maybe I dislike the texture of fruit in bread. Maybe I'm allergic to blueberries. IDK! But people instinctively want to say something so that the people who made the item are at least aware, and whether the criticism is in good faith, or whether the creators listen and/or accept the criticism or not, well, that's up to them.
Anne Rice herself was famous for not accepting criticism, but that hasn’t stopped the fandom from criticizing VC canon itself for decades. More on that in a bit.
Rollin Jones said he’ll take criticism [X, Den of Geek article, July 22, 2022]:
What fan backlash are you predicting?
Look, if you can make it through these first seven episodes, I’ll be back at Comic-Con next year, and if you’re still upset with me, I will set myself up at a booth, and you can kick me in the shins. I’ll be there for you. I really do think [the fans] will be surprised at how we are constantly going back to the book.
We’ll see, I’m open to being pleasantly surprised. I’m ready to see this cover band rework and play these beloved songs, so to speak. Johnny Cash did such a moving cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” that Trent said it was Johnny’s song now.
Once Johnny Cash covers your song– it’s not your song anymore.
Here’s a few more Johnny Cash covered and commentary about them.
4) Criticism of VC in general, including about the show, from what I’ve seen on Tumblr, is meant more as intellectual exercise and a way to find like-minded people.
Criticism of the show is an intellectual exercise, especially in a fandom full of ficwriters and fanartists, we’re challenged with our own creative choices, I write fic, we want to know the reasons for the changes to canon. We like to speculate. And we have our own taste. Are these blueberry pancakes better than chocolate chip? If not, why not? Ultimately, maybe it’s a flavor preference, maybe you just prefer fruit and I prefer chocolate, but we can still talk about the merits and faults. I don’t think of this as “baiting” oneself. More on that later. If people can talk about specific reasons they’re enjoying the show, the other side of the coin can certainly be that people want to talk about the specific reasons why they dislike the show.
It’s also a way of finding like-minded people. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people state "VC is a trilogy!" in a way that was clearly intended to fish for more people who agreed with them, which is totally normal fandom behavior. Or how many times people have critiqued Antonio Banderas' Armand being aged up and not auburn-haired; they wanted a canon-compliant Armand, and they were disappointed with what they were served, no matter how pleased other people were with Antonio's performance. It doesn't matter that some people loved him! Other people didn't like it, they criticized it, and they continue to do so, as is their right. Personally, I loved Antonio's performance but I'm not a huge Armand fan, I'm fine with saying that I'm not as invested in him as the disappointed fans are/were.
I also disagree that it's not fun for people to criticize AMC, bc it's fun for other people to criticize things! We've been doing it in VC fandom for decades. I’m pretty sure that the  "VC is a trilogy!" advocates have fun saying so, because they’ve kept it up for years.
I confess I don’t really know what “baiting themselves” means. I assume it means tormenting themselves? Trying to be angry about it? Well, people do that, too. In our fandom, there's always room for more sadists and masochists! 😂
5) People who enjoy the AMC show: Try not to take criticism of the show as a personal attack.
I think one of the major fandom problems we have is this feeling that disagreement = attack. There’s a lot of tension right now. There are people who want to escalate it. Even if the criticism is an attack, please try not to engage with it, seek like-minded people to enjoy the show with <3
6) Engagement is engagement, negative or positive, and that’s ratings for the show. Kind of already explained this one!
Non si balla questa notte
Quell'area di servizio in cui si era fermato quasi cinquant'anni prima era ancora lì. Era stata rimodernata, ora c'era anche una colonnina per le auto elettriche. Nella sua ritrovata sanità mentale, aveva deciso di tornare in quei posti visitati prima che la sua vita da persona normale finisse, prima di quella notte a San Francisco.
Entrò e ordinò un caffè, anche solo per il piacere di farlo. Il profumo del caffè restava una delle sue cose preferite.
Fu in quel momento che udí quella voce: ora era anziana e le parole uscivano come a fatica, come trattenute dalla dentiera.
Se da giovane aveva avuto il dubbio, ora lo sapeva: era un assassino. Aveva davvero ucciso sua moglie con il veleno per topi. E poi ci aveva preso gusto, raccontarlo era stato bello quanto farlo e così lo aveva fatto ancora e ancora. Decine e decine di donne senza nome portate lontano, scaricate nella profondità del mare.
Daniel si voltò a guardare quel vecchio viscido e bastardo, pensando che forse il mondo sarebbe stato un posto migliore senza di lui, anche se ormai era vecchio e quasi innocuo. Daniel si limitava alla bevutina ormai, e quella sera aveva intenzione di andare a ballare tra splendidi esemplari di maschi umani, ad affondare il viso nei loro colli mentre lo abbracciano.
Ma non quella notte.
Johnlock fics I read in 2023
This is everything I read in the Sherlock Holmes fandom last year that made it into my bookmarks. So while I may not have read enough to make a selected "best of" list, consider these the ones that made it past all my internal selection criteria and are deserving of a spotlight. A few of these were completed prior to 2023.
A Case of You by Silvergirl (17K, M, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock is marrying an American, and at the rehearsal dinner, best man John makes a drunken love confession he doesn’t remember the next day. Badly hungover, John can't find anyone to tell him what the hell happened to the wedding, where the grooms are, or how he can put it right so that Sherlock can be happy. But what if he's dead wrong about what will make Sherlock happy?
A Midnight Clear by khorazir (16K, T, Johnlock) It’s Christmas Eve, and Sherlock is working. Because that’s what he does. He doesn’t need Christmas, or holiday cheer, or even company. He’s fine on his own, thank you very much – until a series of strange encounters on his way back to Baker Street makes him reconsider.
A Story That Is Almost, But Not Quite, Entirely Unlike Blue Carbuncle by Iwantthatcoat (16K, M, Johnlock) It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the Holmes Family is all set to have one of those unimaginable Christmas dinners— but the game is afoot, as Mummy’s friend is caught up in a Christmas mystery.
An Elegant Solution by ArwaMachine (19K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock finds himself unspeakably aroused by the idea of John with another man. Problem is, the only man Sherlock will permit be with John is Sherlock himself. Seems like an unsolvable problem. ... or is it?
An Ocean Away by westernredcedar (14K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes has been gone for twenty long years, time enough for John Watson's daughter to make it all the way to Harvard University.
Avast Ye Merry Gentlemen by StellaCartography (10K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is not a Christmas person. John decides it's Christmas that needs changing.
Bright Blue Ink by 13_33 (13K, G, Johnlock, Warstan) When one of my patients asks me about my relationship with Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, I answer this: I am his chronicler, his assistant in solving crimes, his confidant and friend. Of course, all these terms hold true, now as then, at the beginning of our shared history. But just as in a family portrait you can only see the put-on smiles and never the real faces of the people, they were only part of what made up my true relationship with Holmes. I know him, I then add; I know him well. [ACD]
Deductive Reasoning by cormorant (8K, T, Johnlock) John finds out that Sherlock has assumed for a while that their relationship was romantic, and feels like maybe he should have been notified about that.
Doting Husbands by Calais_Reno (16K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock takes on a new hobby: writing a story. If only something would happen! Takes place a year after the ending of Wooing Sherlock Holmes. He and John have been married for a year, still retired, living in Sussex.
Full Mount by ArwaMachine (54K, E, Johnlock) After Sherlock unceremoniously returns from the dead, John finds himself inexplicably angry all the time. So he does what any emotionally-constipated British man does: he joins a Mixed Martial Arts gym. As John throws himself into the sport and joins in on underground no-holds-barred brawls, situations arise that just might force John to face what is really going on underneath all the rage.
Indefinite Lines by ArwaMachine (298K, E, Johnlock) When two lines, inclined towards each other, are extended indefinitely, it is inevitable that they meet. Upon meeting, the lines become something new. Together. Perhaps it’s been like that from the beginning for Sherlock and John—their lives weaving together, inclined towards one another, moving closer and closer to something greater than themselves.
Live from the Morgue by disfictional (8K, E, Johnlock) Molly interviews Sherlock on her podcast, Live from the Morgue. John listens.
Lost In A Good Book by khorazir (68K, M, Johnlock) After chasing a criminal into a poky second-hand bookshop, John and Sherlock find themselves not only stuck in the building, but in L-space itself. With things still raw and unsettled between them after the events surrounding the Culverton Smith case, this adds another dimension to their predicament, which not only consists of finding a way out of the shop (while avoiding getting murdered by the criminal), but also to finally address the issues between them.
Nightjet by khorazir (22K, M, Johnlock) Officially deceased for eighteen months and still looking for the last remainders of Moriarty’s criminal empire, an exhausted Sherlock boards a night train in Germany to bring him to his next hunting ground. Due to a mishap with the sleeper cars, he is forced to share a compartment with a stranger – who turns out to be not quite as strange as Sherlock thought. The universe isn’t lazy, after all …
Nothing to Celebrate by DiscordantWords (30K, M, Johnlock, Warstan) Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead. Things only get worse from there.
Our Ghosts And This by LipstickDaddy (12K, T, Johnlock) An epilogue in three acts.
Primavera by Berty (9K, T, Johnlock) Italy in the springtime is as romantic as it gets but is it enough to free unspoken words and feelings after years of silence?
Salut d'Amour by ecoutes (11K, G, Johnlock) Despite Holmes claiming that my narrations of our cases were tainted with sentimentality, his preferences in music, I learned, were awfully romantic. [ACD]
Spare Parts by Raina_at (63K, E, Johnlock) Two years ago, Sherlock Holmes jumped off the roof of New London Hospital. Two months ago, he walked into John's clinic as if no time had passed at all. John hasn't seen him since. But then Sherlock knocks on John's door with a case he can't say no to, and while figuring out why the biggest manufacturer or synthetic limbs in the System is going after veterans, they also need to find out whether there's a way to fix what's broken between them.
stirringofbirds between my arms by NotusLethe (18K, E, Johnlock, Enola/Tewksbury) Over the years, John Watson gets to know his new flatmate, Sherlock Holmes, and the man's clever ward. [Enola Holmes]
Stretch by illwick (13K, E, Johnlock) Sometimes the lines get blurry. [Part 35 of a BDSM established relationship series]
The Adventure of The Reluctant Docent by mydogwatson (23K, T, Johnlock) Someone is killing the docents of London. Sherlock is on the case when he meets a very interesting docent.
The Case of the Freudian Dick Pic Slip by expoduck (11K, E, Johnlock) John accidentally sends Sherlock a dick pic he'd intended for another man.
The Mystery of the Missing Metallurgist by rudbeckia (14K, M, Johnlock) A young wife engages Holmes to find her missing husband. Lestrade thinks the man has absconded to America, but Holmes rises to the challenge of Proving Lestrade Wrong. The case turns out to be far more complex and dangerous than they first thought, and Holmes sends Watson to secure Lestrade’s help in bringing a criminal gang to justice. When Holmes gets injured, Watson realises where his heart lies and a little lighthearted banter leads to a tentative confession. [ACD]
The Silence Between the Notes by J_Baillier (44K, M, Johnlock, Viclock) Lieutenant John Watson's days in London are painted in shades of grey after losing both his military career and his family. Could an unexpected request to travel to Vienna to track down the errant son of a wealthy family break the monotony?
The Wizard of Baker Street by Calais_Reno (23K, T, Johnlock) In which Sherlock is a wizard under a curse and John spends a lot of time as a cat.
‘tis the damn season by chrysanthemumsies (22K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John travel to Edinburgh to catch a homophobic serial killer in time for Christmas. They figure out how to use their words, more or less.
Trapezoid by SilentAuror (27K, E, Johnlock, OMC/ OMC) Corey Graham invites John and Sherlock to visit L.A. to consult on a project… at least, officially.
Yorkshire by lurikko (8K, E, Johnlock) They're in Yorkshire, in a house in the moors, for a case, only Sherlock keeps touching John. [Omegaverse]
A line I read in one of the Sherlock short stories ("My friend never stood on the dock") and my recent fixation on the Ace Attorney series led to me asking one question.
"What if Sherlock Holmes did go on trial, being accused of murder?"
The short story title would refer to the courthouse (maybe The Old Bailey, referenced in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.)
Immediately following his arrest, Holmes sends a message to Watson. In the note, he tells Watson not to get sentimental and visit him in jail that night, but instead to investigate the scene of the crime, and see what he can deduce from it. Showing great trust in his friend, Watson does just that and takes very detailed notes on his findings.
"There was never a greater test of my own powers of observation."
And because of Holmes's status as a sort of celebrity, he will have a closed trial, with only members of the judiciary and key people on the case attending. This is to prevent the trial from becoming a media circus, and ensure the verdict will be reached by evidence and testimony rather than public opinion.
Godfrey Norton, who is now Irene Adler's husband, is serving as Holmes's defense counsel. Irene herself is attending the trial, watching from the gallery. (This is the final way Irene outsmarted Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia - everyone believed Norton was a prosecutor working on her behalf, when he was actually a public defender.)
The opposing counsel is Charles Culverton-Smith, a prosecutor who is on track to become Director of Public Prosecutions. There’s a possibility that he took the case to add to his reputation (but that’s just speculation on Watson and Norton’s part.)
Watson tells Holmes of this theory when they speak in the defendant's lobby just before the trial, but Holmes is skeptical.
"If Culverton-Smith truly wanted to bolster his reputation, he would insist on a public trial where he could show his legal prowess to a larger audience. There is something else at play here, something far more sinister."
The trial begins. Both Norton and Culverton-Smith give their legal arguments, supporting their stances with evidence and witness testimony.
Watson is the final witness to speak in the trial. He describes his findings at the crime scene, and tries to use factual language (as Holmes remarked to him before, when talking about his writings.) Everyone in the courtroom (including the judge and the prosecution) believe Watson's observations to be so important, that they agree to call for a thirty minute recess. During the pause in proceedings, Lestrade and other policemen to look over the crime scene one more time alongside Watson to confirm what he said was true.
Sure enough, Watson's deductions prove that Sherlock Holmes couldn't have been the killer. When court is back in session, Lestrade gives his report. Based on the new information, the judge hands down a verdict of "not guilty" to Sherlock Holmes.
There is little time to celebrate, as Holmes immediately whisks Watson away to the streets of London. He insists they make haste the nearest carriage, because "There's still time to catch the true mastermind behind this devious plot!"
Lestrade picks up on Holmes's pursuit and decides to lead his own forces to block one of the main exits to London.
Meanwhile, Holmes and Watson enter a high speed chase against the true culprit, who's been behind at least two other incidents of framing people for murders he committed.
At the end of the chase, the criminal is surrounded by Lestrade and his police force on one side, along with Holmes and Watson (who is armed with his revolver) on the other side. He finally surrenders and gives himself up, at last being taken into custody.
Watson is astonished at this turn of events. "My dear Holmes, you've done it again! I'm speechless!"
"Indeed I have, but I insist you don't undersell your role in this, dear Watson. This case would have a much darker conclusion without your thoughtful analysis. I trust that you will reflect that in your writings, if there is ever a time you will be permitted to release the details to the public."
Charles Culverton-Smith catches up with Holmes and Watson. He didn't get a chance to speak with them after the trial, but wanted them to know that he harbored no ill will towards Holmes. He was simply doing his job as a man who practices law, and couldn't imagine leaving the trial to anyone else. Because everyone deserves a fair trial, and many other lawyers are biased either for or against Holmes, depending on how his actions affected their cases.
Holmes comments that Culverton-Smith will make a fine Director of Public Prosecutions when the time comes, since his integrity speaks for itself.
"If I am ever on the dock in the future, I would trust your judgment."
Watson insists Holmes not talk about "the next time in court" because he doesn't want there to be a "next time."
Holmes agrees to move on from the subject. He points out there is still ample time for breakfast and sets off to find the nearest place that will serve Watson's favorite dishes. "My treat, naturally."
Watson concludes the story mentioning that five years have passed since the first and only trial of his friend, Sherlock Holmes. The events in the closed courtroom have been made public, to teach students of law how to conduct a fair trial of a famous (or infamous) client.
after seeing many posts over the past year or so about what level of murder and violence is in-character for the riddler, and changing my own opinion on it so many times, i’m finally writing my own take about it. i’m gonna preface this by saying i’m not writing this to hate on anyone’s interpretations, nor am i vagueing anyone who’s posted their own takes on this recently - i don’t think there’s a “correct” interpretation here, actually! i’m just here to infodump :]
first things first, the riddler does in fact kill people, we know this. but, i do think i know what comic contributed most to the misconception that he’s never killed anyone back in the early days of his character, and to the interpretation that he’s just a little guy whose crimes are mostly harmless:
Tumblr media
(from when is a door, by neil gaim*n - censoring his name because he’s on this website and i’m afraid of somehow summoning him)
i often see this page cited by people who think the riddler should be a silly harmless guy, and it very much shaped my own cringey sanded-down interpretation of the rogues before i got deep into comics. but how true is it? (disclaimer, i know that “when is a door” is about nostalgia for the silver age/batman ‘66/etc. era of batman media, not neil gaim*n claiming that this is how every batman comic has been before a certain point - i'm not trying to actually disprove anything that was said in this page, and a lot of the examples i'll be mentioning were published after this comic.) first, let’s look at his pre-crisis appearances.
right from the riddler’s first introduction in detective comics #140, he puts some dude in a puzzle death trap. in many of his following appearances, he tones it down and mostly just sticks to stealing shit or trying to kill batman, with no civilian casualties. (not always, though - there’s a few issues here and there where he kills a random guy or tries to blow up the city, like batman #292 and detective comics #362.) there are very few issues where his crimes are almost entirely harmless, like the brave and the bold #68. this statement from jim gordon in batman #362 sums him up, for the most part:
Tumblr media
things start getting more inconsistent in the 80s/90s part of the post-crisis era, which was when the previously mentioned “when is a door” was published. you have the question #26, which implies that the riddler has been very harmless up until this point - gordon states that the only person edward is likely to hurt with his crimes is himself, and he’s considered such a minor threat that they let him go free because prosecuting him wouldn’t be worth the effort. then there’s dark knight, dark city, where he happily tries to kill a whole bunch of people including babies for the sake of a scheme. then there’s showcase ‘94 #4, with this comment from jeremiah arkham:
Tumblr media
then there’s the batman chronicles #3, where he’s back to casually shooting people to death. then there’s the long halloween and dark victory, where he’s some pathetic guy who kinda just shows up sometimes and isn’t enough of a threat for batman to send to arkham. you get the idea. of course, there’s more within these issues than what i’ve mentioned - in the question #26, he’s pretty on board to start killing people despite his previous harmlessness, while in dark knight dark city, both his henchmen and batman comment on his bloodthirstiness as being out of the ordinary for him. (not to mention that it’s debatable how much control he had over his actions, because he was kinda being possessed by demons.)
unfortunately i’m not going to keep going down a timeline of every riddler comic because there’s still so many i haven’t read, and this post was mostly meant to analyze his 40s - 90s appearances as many characters began taking a darker turn after that point. i have a few more screenshots from the 2000s onwards pointing to a generally harmless riddler, but there really aren't many:
Tumblr media
(i don’t remember which one this is from, sorry)
Tumblr media
(catwoman lonely city #2 by cliff chiang - i feel like i maybe shouldn’t include it because it’s an elseworld, but it did influence my own characterization of edward back when i interpreted him this way. i recommend this comic so much btw)
i don’t really have a conclusion for this post, or a specific interpretation i'm arguing for - i just wanted to analyze how accurate this somewhat-common fanon portrayal of him is, based on the era of comics that i think a lot of fans are drawing from. thanks for coming to my riddler ted talk :]
Something New....
Tumblr media
So….I watched one episode of Unsolved Mysteries and a whole thing happened.
First of all, I have always been a huge fan of both crime and medical procedurals. If you don’t know what I mean by procedural, here is the Wikipedia definition: In television, "procedural" specifically refers to a genre of programs in which a problem is introduced, investigated, and solved all within the same episode. These shows tend to be hour-long dramas and are often (though not always) police or crime related.
After both @harleybeaumont and @dcbbw encouraged me to do something with the fact that the unsolved mystery sent my head spinning in a million different directions, an idea was born. An idea for a procedural-type series, with each multi-chapter episode a stand-alone mystery, with overarching storylines for the main characters woven throughout every episode.
A series that has very little to do with canon. No one is royalty and it’s set in the good old U.S.A. The name of my fictional city is a nod to canon though: Cordonia City.
Thanks so much to @harleybeaumont @dcbbw @karahalloway and @aussiegurl1234 for helping me tweak and revise the blurb found below. Extra special thanks to @harleybeaumont for spending the better part of a week bouncing ideas with me and working on the visuals for me.
What lies in the heart of Cordonia City?
Tumblr media
Situated on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, Cordonia City is the largest metropolitan area in the country. Renowned for its culture, it’s an epicenter for artists of all types, world-class culinary establishments, and financial institutions. But there’s a dark underbelly to the city, one that never sleeps.
Law’s End, the largest of the boroughs, is rife with turmoil. It’s a place where wealth and privilege live side by side with poverty and squalor, where passion intertwines with betrayal. A place where lies and deceit are commonplace, politics and corruption rule, and crime and violence flow through the city streets.
These are the stories of the people that fight against the tide of injustice, and the woman who chronicles those crusades.
Tumblr media
Liam Rys is a strait-laced cop who won’t step outside the lines of the law for any reason, even if that means the bad guy walks. Rules are rules and they’re there for a reason.
Drake Walker is a jaded PI who believes the ends justify the means. He treats lines and rules as suggestions at best and things that stand in his way at worst.
Maxwell Beaumont is a multitalented photojournalist with mad cyber skills. He doesn’t necessarily care about the lines, the rules, or the ends, he’s just along for the ride.
Riley Brooks is an investigative journalist assigned to the crime desk and an up-and-coming true crime novelist who is looking for her next big story. She’ll go to great lengths to get what she wants, and she never reveals her sources.
With Olivia Nevrakis as the DA, Hana Lee as the medical examiner, and Madeleine Amaranth as mayor, anything could happen.
Welcome to.....
(Chapter 2)
//
Manuscript Excerpt found in the Chambers of Lord Baemond Velaryon in the Dragonstone Keep - Gathered by Maester Telmon.
======================================
‘If you think that you have earned my grace thanks to that pitiful act you performed for me the other day, you are seriously mistaken, nephew.’
As I heard my uncle's voice behind me, I turned around to look at him, mildly startled by his intrusion. He stood with his hands behind his back, the strands of his snow white hair dancing in the soft wind like the soft branches of a willow tree. I could sense the sheer intensity on his gaze, and it almost choked me.
‘I understand your reluctance to believing my apologies, but they were sincere, regardless you believed them to be so or not.’ I answered calmly after a quiet moment of contemplation. ‘It is also true that it was not my hand, but those of my brothers who hurt you, but the same blood runs through our veins, and as their successes are my own, so are their crimes.’
The intensity on his gaze didn't waver, even as he silently came closer to me, standing amongst the roots of the Godswood's heart tree.
‘Nobody comes around here anymore; the old faith dies in the south.’ I said quietly, almost to myself, as he stood straight in front of me, looking down on me as I sat in a natural nook made by the roots on the back side of the heart tree, an old heavy book firmly grasped in my hands.
‘What are you reading?’ he asked looking down on the book over my knees.
‘Maester Vaemar's Lessons on Court Survival.’ I answered almost amused looking up again to meet his still intense gaze.
‘Fitting reading.’ was all the answer I got.
‘Do you want it?’ I asked, handing over the book to him.
‘I have already read it.’ he said almost with contempt, still looking down on me.
After that, he turned around and walked away, leaving me to ponder the reason for his unexpected and seemingly inconsequential visit.
The next time we had a meaningful encounter was during one of my private training lessons. I would train with my brothers in the courtyard, yes, but that sort of training felt constrictive and all the way pointless. Training for jousting and fighting in the melee in tournaments felt alien to me, but still it was a duty I had to fulfil, and which I did with notable success. However, when the "official" training was over, I would see myself back into the Godswood's, and inside the root nook of the heart tree, I would train my mind with the volumes of long forgotten maesters’ chronicles, tales of heroes and philosophical lessons.
That day, nevertheless, wasn't the day for it, for as our physical training came to an end, the storm that loomed over the city started to pour heavily, and the training was forcibly ended. As I knew that my nook would be an unfitting place for my private training, I decided then to find myself another reading spot, this time, indoors.
After walking through great halls and crossing heavy doors, gates and dark hallways, I found myself in a candle lit chamber, clearly subterranean, adorned with the bones of the late dragons of the family. Presiding over them, hanging from heavy iron chains, loomed the huge skull of the great Balerion, the Black Dread, its eyes empty but still looking over the room. Underneath it, hundreds of lit candles took it upon themselves to cast long unsettling shadows on the dark and heavy blood red walls, as well as to magnify Balerion's presence, making myself wary of coming closer to it.
‘Are you afraid, nephew?’
I startled as I heard his voice in a whisper over my shoulder, and upon turning around, I found him standing still, very close to my back, and staring at me intensely with his remaining eye, his long white hair, as well as his clothes, soaked with rain.
All the answer I could give was a little puff, and as I looked at him with a complicit look, I stepped away from him with my book still clenched under my arm.
‘I wouldn't call it fear; more like, deference or respect. Only a fool would not feel such emotions in the presence of such a beast, even if it's bones all that remains.’ I was finally able to say as I approached the candle-packed altar, looking at the skull looming over me, heavy and ominous, hearing his steps come closer to where I stood.
‘It must not be such a humbling sight for you though; after all, you are the rider of Vhagar, the biggest dragon alive in the known world.’ I said moving my gaze from Balerion's mighty skull back to his face.
That seemed to strike something inside him, for his answer came almost immediately, with a taste of something I wasn't able to recognise at the time, but which seemed fairly similar to loathing.
‘And I paid the price for it, as everyone, including yourself, knows.’
There was no answer from me this time, and after holding his gaze in mine for a couple of silent seconds, I turned around to look at the room.
‘Is this your secret place? If so, I shall leave you alone.’ I said without looking at him.
‘No.’
‘No to the secret place, or no to my leaving?’ I asked now friskily, turning to look at him.
‘No.’ he repeated sternly as he kept on looking at me.
‘I see that you are as fond of words as I myself am. Would you care to elaborate a bit further for those of us ungifted with beyond measure semantic comprehension?’ I asked playfully once again as I walked back up to him, looking up to save the little distance in height between our eyes.
‘No.’ he repeated for the third time, a cocky smile slowly appearing on his lips.
‘Oh! So you do have a sense of humour after all?’ I teased with an even more playful grin on my own face as I saw his.
‘It was an eye your brothers took from me, not my sense of humour.’ he answered still grinning down at me.
That felt like a bucket of ice cold water being poured over me, especially because I realised he had guided me into that dead end with extreme precision, and only with three words.
‘I shall go now.’ I said after a moment of silence in which I could see him rejoice in his victory over me in our battle of wits.
‘No, you got here first.’ he said quickly to me, grabbing my free arm as I tried to make a go for the exit. ‘The early bird catches the worm; I should know it well.’ This last part he whispered to my ear.
Seemingly frozen in time, with my pulse beating wildly on my temples and the place where his hand held my arm, and as close together as we were, I looked up from his hand into his eye, finding it already staring at me with its usual intensity, almost without blinking.
After that, he stepped away, gave me one last look, and turned around to leave, his wet hair deprived of its usual grace and airiness, but still as alluring as ever.
the temptation to write a fic rewriting the wayhaven chronicles from the ground up is growing with each day. my current ideas:
1. if we keep the original plot intact we HAVE to make the detective a civilian so they truly have no influence to enforce the law, allowing for the bobby related plot threads to continue unimpeded + explaining why the detective does zero actual investigation. asking one or two surface level questions does not a detective make. it would also explain why the detective doesn't have any real training and why they don't do any of the obvious things (why is calling for reinforcements + collecting evidence at the warehouse two separate things in book 1? why wouldn't any detective worth their badge not do both?) this would also explain why the detective is such a passive character for the entirety of the books—as an untrained civilian they are completely out of their depth. the detective leaning so heavily on the agency and their hastily explained, lengthy absences from the small town of wayhaven would be less of an issue this way.
2. the detective stays a detective, but the plot shifts to account for that. in this route the mystery/story actually follows something along the lines of a crime serial, making the mystery the A-plot and the character arcs the B-plot that weaves all three books together, instead of the reverse being true. twc right now from a purely narrative perspective is using the crime as a vehicle for the romance, but doing so in a way that makes the detective look utterly incompetent at their job. book 1 would focus entirely on the mystery of the murders, the inconsistencies found in the blood, and the political strife between the police station and the hospital that stems from the mayor's stingy funding of both. the romance would simmer slowly in the background until it climaxes at the end during the rescue mission, but it wouldn't be the focus. that would be saved for book 2, where the mystery of the sudden disease's source would walk in tandem with the detective's growing feelings for their chosen love interest(s). the detective's skills/stats would also come into play more, instead of one or two throwaway lines that don't contribute anything to the resolution of the cases. bobby would also have to tread more carefully in this route if they don't want to be hit with a restraining order/etc. depending on your choices. the agency's jurisdiction would also be a line of tension between the wayhaven PD and the mayor/agency, adding to the tension (if any) between the detective and rebecca. this could lead to a dramatic clash between the police chief and the mayor, with the detective having to pick sides at the end of future books.
im not even touching the forced personality of the detective because i feel like anyone who's played (read: tried to play) a stoic/intimidating detective would quickly find themselves watching their OC be possessed by the protagonist of a YA romance every time they open their mouth. your stats might as well be a decorative slider in the settings for all they're worth.
Animale notturno
Preparò le cassette per un'altra notte di interviste. Due notti prima aveva incontrato un giovane uomo in una stazione di servizio, avevo detto di aver ucciso sua moglie perché era convinto che fosse posseduta dal diavolo. Si erano sposati subito dopo le scuole superiori, in modo da poter fare sesso, perché lei era cattolica praticante. Gli disse che proprio i cattolici venivano posseduti di più, piacevano molto al diavolo. Per lui erano degli idolatri e non si sentiva in colpa per aver ucciso sua moglie. L'aveva avvelenata con veleno per topi. A Daniel gli si ribaltò lo stomaco al ricordo della faccia oscena di quell'uomo. Sperava ancora che fosse tutto falso. Che alla vista del registratore quell'uomo si fosse inventato una storia dell'orrore. Accadeva spesso; le persone vivevano una vita così monotona da inventarsi storie assurde. Ormai Daniel aveva imparato a riconoscere la verità dalla bugia, ma quella storia era spaventosamente verosimile.
Ponderò se vendere quella storia o bruciare i nastri, nel frattempo si preparava per un'altra notte di storie. Andò in un locale gay di San Francisco, con la speranza che, se non avesse trovato una storia interessante, forse avrebbe trovato due braccia forti in cui passare la notte.
Vide un uomo bellissimo seduto al bancone, dalla pelle pallida, i capelli neri e straordinari occhi verdi. Se ne stava lì da solo, tra le dita un bicchiere di vino mai toccato.
Aveva l'aria di possedere una storia interessante, tra quelle labbra appena rosate.
