the kevjean dynamic is morally right and good bc you really truly can stick your fingers in them and do sooo much yknow. sometimes i want to write them mourning each other sometimes i want a tense reconciliation sometimes i want to visit their past where they’re tragic or their future where theyre boring and old and codependent (or never speak). they’re pretty little dolls :3

here's the thing about kevjean that people don't often look into when the general consensus for them is so bleak: they are not tragic. yes, they've had a pretty rough time both individually and as a pair, and yes, there is so much baggage between them that it might feel as if a future together in any capacity is unachievable and improbable. but what attracts me to them as a pair, what makes them the prettiest little dolls to smush together and kiss, is the fact that they were able to find friendship and camaraderie in a place that actively denied them both the grace, the humanity really, of finding connection with other people.

i disagree when people say jean's friendship with kevin was a measure of survival first and foremost. i think getting close to kevin was the opposite of a survival tactic: it was directly harmful. they were putting a lot in danger by being as close as they were, by using a language forbidden and beloathed by riko, by breaking the status quo. the fact of their friendship in the first place was dangerous. but that's the point, isn't it? it wasn't about that. kevin and jean created a relationship in a place that desperately wanted to keep them apart and as competitors, and that could never be tragic. it's the opposite. it's proof of both their humanities; it's a humbling reminder; it's the tried and true idea that we want to be kind to each other when it matters. i'm not really sure yet where i want to go with this, but it feels like this is something that should be more prevalent in kevjean content: when it mattered, they were kind to each other. they were the best of each other's days. how could that be tragic?

tl;dr: the sheer fact of kevjean's relationship is a crack of light between two eternities of darkness. that it happened at all in the most unlikely of places with the most unlikely of circumstances is some kind of star-crossed miracle. they will never experience love like this again

there are games that i enjoy playing more and there are games i enjoy thinking about more. sometimes the overall story and themes and blorbos are delightful but actually playing it is a little annoying so i just rotate it in my mind instead. sometimes i get absolutely sucked into the gameplay and the world and the experience for dozens or hundreds of hours and i enjoy listening to the soundtrack but it has little to no lasting impact on me as a person bc something in the story just failed to hit and that’s ok. both are good both are beloved. obviously the ideal piece of media is one i both enjoy actively consuming and thinking about but my mindset is that if a piece of media has any single good thing in it it’s a good piece of media. give me literally anything to work with and i’ll extract joy out of it. i’ve literally never played a game i didn’t like btw

izzy isn‘t up on deck when it happens, which is how it happens in the first place, and quite frankly he had a bad feeling about dropping anchor this close to port (insert past blackbeard shenanigans that turned him grey a good decade before anyone else) but when does anyone ever listen to his years of experience and expertise on this clown boat anyways

and. ok interlude. obviously they’re soulmates. obviously izzy has said nothing about it. he’s a fucked up little man with the selfesteem of a wet limpet this is selfexplanatory. obviously ed and stede are Eyeing him, but stede’s too repressed to say anything about it and ed’s too unwilling to admit he’s a very similar brand of fucked up to do much about it.

so. back to the program. even izzy cannot fight a whole entire crew - given that it is both the size it should be for a ship twice as large as the revenge and actually trained, go figure. does he still try? absolutely. everything comes screeching to a halt when someone gets a gun aimed at black pete’s head though, and they’re all rounded up on deck. there is no getting out of this one, izzy knows - he’s been on the other end of this too often not to. he wonders which one they’ll kill first, maybe fang or ivan to make a point, they’re on the stronger end of the crew -

“well well, what have we here?” the captain says, stopping in front of izzy with a leer that would usually see him relieved of one of his hands. he lifts the sharp edge of his sword to izzy’s neck, tracing the edges of the swallow izzy is cursing himself for putting in such a visible spot. “the polite thing to do here seems to inform you for the sizeable bounty on your head, hands.”

izzy sneers out a get fucked, and realizes several things at once: 1, edward cut off his beard just a week ago last, and is currently lounging in the last silk robe onboard. 2, bonnet has not a single frippery left in his closet, and has been forced into the man’s equivalent of torture (sensible clothes). 3, there’s no way charlie vane, who’s currently backhanding him to the ground, didn’t recognize at least edward.

and, 4: it may have been a mistake leaving the man to die of starvation and also marooning three years ago. obviously he can hold a grudge. should’ve shot him and be done with it.

this, izzy thinks as he’s manhandled over to where they’ve set up a plank to cross to vane’s ship, is where on the queen anne, the crew would’ve jumped into one of blackbeards ingenius rescue plans. scratch that, on the queen this would’ve never happened because the people are competent. the revenge’s crew is just shouting a lot and- whoa, he’s upright again.

vane is still smiling, the unsettling fucker, when he circles izzy’s gloved wrist with iron pressure. “you know”, he says, conversationally, “i’ve always wondered, about your mark.” cold fingers slide the glove off his hand, roll up his sleeve. izzy tries to squirm away from it, tries to throw his head back and break someone’s nose, but this is not pirate playgroup - this is a group of actual competents, a fact he curses silently as the mark is exposed to open air, a perfect match for his captains’. there’s a sharp chorus of gasps and then horrible silence that izzy cannot face, closing his eyes instead.

“hm”, vane says, “thought so.” and then pain explodes at the back of izzy’s head, and the world really does fade away.

one of the things that makes the umineko cast work so well is that they're very tightly written in terms of how they parallel each other but also how they parallel yasu first and foremost and i've always felt like that's an approach sotsugou tried to replicate with the higurashi cast and satoko

#it's obviously not as competent as umineko and it'd be crazy to suggest this #but it's also unfair to pit them against each other in terms of quality when one is ~100h sound novel and the other is an anime #anyway the most obvious and interesting is satoko and rika being narrative foils #but besides that the takano focus in the last episode of gou is all about drawing parallels between her and satoko #it's satoko inheriting the takano role so this exists to emphasize how similar they truly are #there's oniakashi rena and wataakashi mion which are all about drawing parallels with satoko's character arc albeit in different ways #even teppei in tatariakashi isn't meant to be seen as a character as much as he's a symbol #there's so much nuance in terms of what teppei stands for in terms of being the fantasy of the father figure she wishes she could've had #but he's also a mirror of her 'worst' self #even hanyuu's focus in the beginning of kagurashi can be drawn back to satoko's motives #i think sotsugou makes the most sense when you parse it as being the satoko show before anything else #i think this is something the original does with rika too but it's also a little different #the original isn't as rika centric #even if she's the hidden protagonist and the true heart it's still an ensemble story #but sotsugou feels like it's a love letter for satoko in the same way umineko is one for beatrice #not that this means the other characters don't matter it's just that everything is kinda about them? #not sure if this makes sense but it does in my head and i can write so many words about all the parallels #gamo.txt

Seeing the crit of the pjo show makes me a little glad that I haven't watched it but I do know eventually I want to give it a chance. #JUST BE NORMAL #we are all in our thirties GO DO YOUR TAXES JESUS #sits back down and bangs on my keyboard like a chimp #not to be all “don't like don't read” but #it really is true #if a story someone writes bothers you that much #simply close your eyes and read something else #you are not paid to interact with anyone else in a space #nor is there any reward for interacting with their works besides the gift of reading something someone else wrote #the privilege of seeing something someone else drew #it is a privilege to get to read the fruits of someone elses efforts #and I think we need to understand that more #and appreciate that for what it is #i am privileged to get to read the stuff my friends write/draw #its is a lovely GIFT of dedication and time that I appreciate very much #and the idea that someone could sit down and consume that and read something that took a significant amount of effort and time #and then decide that it personally offends them not bc of the content but bc of some internal metric of what is “right” about #a little guy who just literally does not exist? #just does not sit right with me
