Dispatch from Absurdist France
Just so you know we're still living in our own weird Kafka/Ionesco fusion timeline.
Macron's a pompous authoritarian dick and we hate him, so the good people of France started a little informal competition amongst ourselves to see which city or town can fuck his redemption tour of public appearances the most. Besides the usual booing, heckling (shoutout to the two old guys that called him a butthole to his face and called his government corrupt while shaking his hand on live TV yesterday, dudes rock!) etc, we've seen a revival of the ancestral tradition of the casserolade/cacerolazo. Which is basically bringing pots and pans and banging on them to make as much noise as you can to drown out government bullshit, thanks to our Latin brothers and sisters for keeping that one warm for us.
Since he's also very sensitive and his minions the préfets -kinda like a local police chief+mini-governor thing- are very attentive to his feelings, they're taking Measures. This morning he went on a visit in the beautiful, beautiful Languedoc backcountry, my only true love, and the local préfet wasn't about to be outdone in fascist shit by his colleagues.
He invaded the small town of Ganges (4000 souls) with 600 riot cops, not a typo, and illegally used an anti-terror law to forbid the carrying of various things in the municipality, including "portable sound devices".
WHICH, Y'ALL, APPARENTLY INCLUDES FUCKING POTS AND PANS!
Irony and parody are dead, here's the video of popo opening people's bags and seizing saucepans. Also they got manhandeld by a buch of dads with an average of around 0,64 baldspots per scalp and then threw CS gas from 5m away while being downwind.
To top it off, the word for saucepan (casserole) is actually slang for a political scandal, which Macron and his gov are full of (2 or 3 ministers in exercice and his Chief of Staff currently under indictement and 4 or 5 former ones still under indictment or convicted, I lost count)
All of that happened before noon.
I'm done with this clown state, I'll start an Occitan independentist guerilla, this is too stupid.

Trump’s anti-Ukraine view dates to the 1930s. America rejected it then. Will we now?
Tumblr media
(Illustration: Brian Stauffer for The Washington Post)
Tumblr media
This opinion column by Robert Kagan reminds us that history appears to be repeating itself. Trump's America First movement is an echo of the 1930s/1940s isolationist, neo-fascist America First movement that tried to keep the U.S. out of WWII. This is a gift🎁link, so you can read the entire article, even if you don't subscribe to The Washington Post. Below are some excerpts:
Many Americans seem shocked that Republicans would oppose helping Ukraine at this critical juncture in history....Clearly, people have not been taking Donald Trump’s resurrection of America First seriously. It’s time they did. The original America First Committee was founded in September 1940. Consider the global circumstances at the time. Two years earlier, Hitler had annexed Austria and invaded and occupied Czechoslovakia. One year earlier, he had invaded and conquered Poland. In the first months of 1940, he invaded and occupied Norway, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. In early June 1940, British troops evacuated from Dunkirk, and France was overrun by the Nazi blitzkrieg. In September, the very month of the committee’s formation, German troops were in Paris and Edward R. Murrow was reporting from London under bombardment by the Luftwaffe. That was the moment the America First movement launched itself into the battle to block aid to Britain. [...] This “realism” meshed well with anti-interventionism. Americans had to respect “the right of an able and virile nation [i.e. Nazi Germany] to expand,” aviator Charles Lindbergh argued. [...] Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has called for the immediate reduction of U.S. force levels in Europe and the abrogation of America’s common-defense Article 5 commitments. He wants the United States to declare publicly that in the event of a “direct conflict” between Russia and a NATO ally, America will “withhold forces.” The Europeans need to know they can no longer “count on us like they used to.”  [...] Can Republicans really be returning to a 1930s worldview in our 21st-century world? The answer is yes. Trump’s Republican Party wants to take the United States back to the triad of interwar conservatism: high tariffs, anti-immigrant xenophobia, isolationism. According to Russ Vought, who is often touted as Trump’s likely chief of staff in a second term, it is precisely this “older definition of conservatism,” the conservatism of the interwar years, that they hope to impose on the nation when Trump regains power. [...] Like those of their 1930s forbears, today’s Republicans’ views of foreign policy are heavily shaped by what they consider the more important domestic battle against liberalism. Foreign policy issues are primarily weapons to be wielded against domestic enemies. [...] The GOP devotion to America First is merely the flip side of Trump’s “poison the blood” campaign. It is about the ascendancy of White Christian America and the various un-American ethnic and racial groups allegedly conspiring against it. [emphasis added]
Use the gift link above to read the entire article. It is worth reading.
____________ Illustration: The above illustration by Brian Stauffer originally drew me to this article. It does a great job of succinctly illustrating the Trump GOP's rightward march towards isolationism (and Putin-style dictatorship). [edited]

To me Dan was telling Trumpet how to resurrect a dog and Trumpet was telling Dan how to say dog in Spanish. While they were waiting for everyone to show up. Btw
[ ID: A drawing of Dan and Trumpet sitting down. Trumpet is sitting with his knees to his chest and a sign on his knees. He's holding it and writing on it with a smile. He's wearing a sweater, dark shorts, boots, and a propeller hat. He has short curly hair and a pair of dragonfly wings. Dan is sitting to the side and behind Trumpet, also with his knees up to his chest. His arms are crossed over his knees and he's looking at the sign and talking with smile. He's wearing a t-shirt, pants, socks, and a pair of goggles. His hair is shaggy and neck length. End ID ]

Lestat's problem is that he lacks problems. maybe he had shit going on in France but this pathetic flip flop has no life outside of Louis in NOLA and it's so fucking funny to watch. He's a white attractive man that has shit fall on his lap and his endless supply of money means he doesn't need to get a job.
The funniest part is he can't even keep himself occupied with traditional housewife duties: they don't eat human food so he doesn't need to spend half his day in the kitchen cooking, he has servants that do the cleaning and they have no child to raise (for now) so he's just wandering around following Louis to his work, sitting in on meetings for no reason, and bothering his employees to amuse himself. Like why the fuck are you sluttily playing solitaire while Louis is scrambling desperately to keep his business afloat? SOLITAIRE! boy if you don't stand up and go do something productive I swear-

If you’re familiar with Noah bertlasky at all, then you know this isn’t even within his top 20 dumb takes, but still. If you need a soulless phone-it-in indiana jones movie to teach you that nazis are bad, you’re beyond help. Your parents and society have failed you deeply.

I'm obsessed with the fact that this blog is followed both by people who think Catholic = Good and people who think Catholic = Bad
Truly finding harmony through shitposting 🙏
Catholics ✝️ shitposters 🤌🏼 we're just like you 🌈
(also like most Catholics are POC and a lot of anti-catholic sentiment is rooted in racism and anti-immigration so I do suggest reevaluating your anti-catholic sentiment. In my experience, Catholicism in POC bubbles is not the same as in white bubbles. Just because white Catholics tend to be conservative does not mean Latine/Indigenous/Asian/Black Catholics vote the same way/have the same opinion on social issues. Cuz, you know, Catholicism isn't a monolith and many controversial social teachings are not dogmatic and most Catholics want to change those teachings but there are a lot of old people that need to die first and the church actually does teach conscience > church teaching anyways. Sorry I'll shut up but it's like super important to be that people realize *not all Catholics are homophobic white men*)

It's not new but I hate how celebrities use activism for publicity too. Why can't they do it genuinely like p!nk or boygeniuse. I'm so annoyed by Beyoncé or Kardashians or even Joe A too. look at what they've posted and their timing. And they don't have to make an announcement everyone they donate too.
I understand why you would be pissed off about this but at this point, I think that argument is irrelevant. Instead, I look at the material impacts of activism (even if it's performative). The material impact of these influential people speaking out on issues that matter and partaking in activism is what's important.
For example, a lot of people were annoyed with Taylor Swift for only speaking out against being a darling of the alt-right when it was no longer controversial for her to do so.
In fact, many people including her fans, were upset by her silence for a long time and kept bringing it to her attention because Trump and his supporters would play her music at their events and speak about how much they like her. Her critiques have said that she only broke her silence when she had to and that it was 'performative' because she turned it into an era and spoke about being an activist in her documentary. Some people have even said it was a strategy for her to stay relevant because her career hadn't returned to its 2014/2015 peak.
For me, as a queer woman, it doesn't matter that much whether she genuinely cared about the LGBTQIA+ rights that she championed for or if it was a way for her to stay relevant in 2019. What matters is that she went through with it because, ultimately, her activism makes a difference. Social change progresses when we speak out publicly.
Anon, there are many things to be annoyed at in the world but this shouldn't be a priority. My advice is to pick and choose your battles. Don't waste your breath on this. Is Joe perhaps being politically active as a way to benefit his public appearance? Maybe. Maybe not. Does it matter? Not at all.
What matters most is to be on the right side of history and use our limited time on this planet to do the right thing. We can do this by speaking up on important causes or finding another way to show solidarity with those who need it.
Peace & Love, sweet anon <3

The fact that Israeli soldiers are raiding the homes of Palestinians families who've just had their children released from the prisons at long last and confiscating any signs of celebration + dispersing family gatherings should be a clue to anyone with a soul that these fascists view any form of Palestinians joy as a threat to their glorious racist state. But of course zionists are going to stick their heads in the sand and pretend like this is just another issue that'll be solved through Hamas being destroyed. Never mind that Hamas is the only reason those Palestinian hostages got released. You can rightfully condemn them for the murder of innocents but the fact remains that those children have finally been freed due to their actions. It doesn't excuse anything, but it does add more condemnation towards the Israeli state. October 7th should never have happened and the fact that capturing Israeli hostages was the only thing that could force Israel to release the women and children it kidnapped is proof that the fascist state must be destroyed in order for actual peace to be found. The Israeli state has made it clear that it will never stop brutalising and tormenting Palestinians unless it is forced to. You can stand against genocide and oppression or you can hope the oppressors grow a conscience after they kill enough enemy children. And even if you do only care about Israeli citizens, you should know that there will be no true peace for them as long as their sense of security is reliant on Palestinian misery. Which it has been since the state's foundation.

It's also super funny to see people in the notes of that post going "you're not a YA protagonist" to reference the idea of joining an underground resistance when like...the YA dystopia genre specifically took a lot of plot cues from star wars, which had a rebellion based on the viet cong, a literal guerilla group, and THAT'S why fighting cops in black bloc is basically the closest someone in the modern US can come to being a YA protagonist.

This is on a post about Biden appointing a gay epidemiologist who became an epidemiologist because of the HIV/AIDS crisis to head the government response to monkeypox. Like I know these people the every opportunity to act like elections are useless but would you rather have Dr. Doulalakis or Dr. Ronny Jackson in charge of pandemic response right now?
When the choice is between the bare minimum (which to be clear, this is not, this is a thoughtful appointment of someone well suited for the job in a professional and personal sense) and less than nothing, it is the responsibility of voters to choose whatever helps the most people.
