‭1 Kings 3:5-143 (GNT‬). “That night the Lord appeared to him in a dream and asked him, “What would you like me to give you?” Solomon answered, “You always showed great love for my father David, your servant, and he was good, loyal, and honest in his relation with you. And you have continued to show him your great and constant love by giving him a son who today rules in his place. O Lord God, you have let me succeed my father as king, even though I am very young and don't know how to rule. Here I am among the people you have chosen to be your own, a people who are so many that they cannot be counted. [9] So give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours?” The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this, and so he said to him, “Because you have asked for the wisdom to rule justly, instead of long life for yourself or riches or the death of your enemies, I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had before or will ever have again. I will also give you what you have not asked for: all your life you will have wealth and honor, more than that of any other king. And if you obey me and keep my laws and commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life.”
“Put God’s Priorities First” by In Touch Ministries:
“If we trust God and seek to honor Him in our decisions, we’ll have the chance to see Him work mightily.”
“Imagine if God showed up and said, “What do you want? Ask, and I’ll give it to you.” How would you answer? Most of us would ask for loved ones’ safety, enough money to meet our needs, or a long, healthy life. Solomon may have been tempted to name something similar—but he made a different request. What he wanted was an understanding heart so he could serve God’s people well.
Solomon’s life was full of personal needs and desires not so different from our own. But when given the opportunity to ask God for anything, he prioritized the Lord’s concerns. God was so pleased with the request that He gave Solomon not only wisdom but riches and honor as well (1 Kings 3:13)! This encounter foreshadows Jesus’ words in the Gospel of Matthew: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you” (Matthew 6:33).
God won’t necessarily give wealth, influence, or long life because we put His priorities first, but He will always be faithful to provide all we need according to His purposes. Solomon’s heart was set on seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness, and the Lord honored that in a multitude of ways—both tangible and intangible. When we make God’s priorities ours, we too will have the chance to see Him work mightily in our life.”

Sort of
Tumblr media
We’re good people, right?
Sort of.
I mean, we do good things. Some of the time. But sometimes we don’t.
We’re nice to other people. Some of the time. But sometimes we aren’t.
At least we don’t go out of our way to hurt people. Usually.
That’s pretty much it. The best we can do is “sort of.”
Why? Why can’t we just be the people we tell ourselves we are?
(BTW, I hate the answer to this question.)
Because we are our own worst enemies.
When things are going great, when we are actually being the people we tell ourselves we are. It’s almost like there’s something in us that says, “this is going far too well, better screw it up.”
And we do something to sabotage ourselves. Something that, with the awful clarity of hindsight, usually stands out as an easily avoided trap. Or a ragingly stupid decision.
Today’s first reading describes it more poetically, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?”
It’s not so much that we’re bad people. It’s just that we’re unreliable. And deceitful.
And the people that are the most deceitful towards?
Ourselves. We tell ourselves the biggest lies. About us.
And because we so desperately want to be the people that we tell ourselves we are, we believe them.
The thing is, when we do, we set ourselves up. For disappointment. And worse.
Because on our own, we can never live up to all of the expectations that we have for ourselves. On our own, we can never be the people that we tell ourselves we are.
It’s why the Bible warns us time and again about the dangers of trusting in people. Especially when we are those people.
The Bible calls that kind of misplaced trust “cursed.” Not because God is hurling thunderbolts and cursing us for trusting in people (especially ourselves) instead of Him.
It’s “cursed” because it always ends up in a mess. Because that’s the natural character of trusting in people. It’s kind of like calling water “wet.” That’s just what it is.
The alternative? As much as we don’t want to admit it, the alternative – the only thing that works – is obvious.
Trusting in God.
The Bible calls that kind of rightly placed trust “blessed.” Because that’s the natural character of trusting in God. That’s just what it is.
Because of who God is.
Because, in the end, God is the only constant. The only One that we can trust absolutely. Which is why we should,
“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” – Corrie ten Boom

Day 4: who is God?
he meant it for evil, but God meant it for good.
There’s a tendency among us to treat prayer like how a pilot treats a parachute: an instrument of last resort. However prayer should be the first thing one turns to: We have this thing in us that is hesitant to trust God when everything we need know about God comes from John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Any parent understands that sentiment.
Hence, whatever is going on in my life, whatever season I’m going through … what do you really know about God?
“I can stop wrestling with God when I know I can trust him. That doesn’t mean I don’t have questions, but it means the way in which I ask the questions ceases to be that of someone who is wondering: ‘Can I trust you?’” - Fr. Mike Schmitz
Wrestling with dad
Remember, God pursued Jacob? Jacob was stewing in his own anxiety over Esau when God showed up. And the wrestling drew Jacob out of his fearful preoccupation and forced him to focus on God.
God afflicted Jacob with a debilitating injury. This had the effect of making Jacob even more vulnerable to Esau, forcing Jacob’s faith to more fully rest on God and not himself. If necessary, God will cause us to limp to increase our faith.
I don’t have to know where are you working right now — I just have to know you are good. You’re just; you’re mercy; you are love; you are my Father.

Never, Ever Give Up
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭16‬ Growing old physically is somewhat natural. We don’t have to think about it. It just happens. We can help it along of course with healthy habits, but we can’t stop the aging process. Spiritual and emotional growth is different. Spiritual and emotional growth is often a…

Everything will work out in the end!

I feel like I should share this with y'all too because it might possibly help someone or show light from a different angle.
This recently came to me from God's Divine Clarity I believe.
It's about forgiveness because that is pretty hard for many people, it's hard for me too. So if you are very focused on the sh** a person has done to you, it can help to see that there will certainly be a point in their development where they will unsh** themselves, meaning they will have to heal and move beyond the version that they were that was so unconscious that it hurt you badly. I'm being cautious here, I only trust myself to try this idea on cases of emotional wounding at this point because I think there is a bit of a bigger chance to be willing to forgive that.
So forgiveness has to do with trusting God's word and trusting that He created humans in His image and likeness and He created us good. So we might trust that this is the reality that eventually everyone has to come back to simply because it is the only thing that's true. Only God's word truly matters. This is why we could trust that the person will eventually return to the truth, even if it takes them 50 more lifetimes to get there and they will move beyond the person that hurt you so badly. In that way, we see that this version of them that is hurting others is ultimately a transitory state and we can let go of the issue now or in 50 more lifetimes. That's mostly in relation to the issue of not getting an apology even though you totally deserve one.
This helped me a little to see that having faith in the possibility of the goodness of this person can help to overcome my pain and my hatred and my need for justice and stuff like that. And having faith in what God has said. Alternatively it can also be having faith in myself that there is a version of myself in the future that has overcome this and is genuinely able to hold no grudges over this and has forgiven the issue honestly. To me it was helpful to see that it is not a long-lasting or practical approach to keep holding onto a negative version of someone that is ultimately transitory and *will* dissolve. I can just as well move on to a different approach to get what I want in order to be free.
Maybe this helps you or if it doesn't speak to you, then I hope some other angle or approach will. May we all find healing, God bless you and me. 😊

Quote
Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: 'All nations will be blessed through you.' So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭34:1‭-‬8‬ ‭(WEB)‬‬. “I will bless the LORD at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth. My soul shall boast in the LORD. The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Oh magnify the LORD with me. Let’s exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The Lord’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Oh taste and see that the LORD is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
“The Guiding Light of God’s Deliverance” by In Touch Ministries:
“When you are afraid, give God your fears and trust Him to provide the strength and peace you need.”
“During times of trial and uncertainty, worry can engulf our heart. But today’s passage serves as an unwavering beacon of hope: “I sought the Lord and He answered me, and rescued me from all my fears” (v. 4). When we feel vulnerable and assailed by doubt, God stands ready to be our guiding light, leading us through the darkness of fear into the comforting embrace of His love.
Like a lighthouse whose beam pierces the night, God’s presence offers reassurance in our life. When we earnestly seek Him, pouring out our fears and worries, He answers with a love that transcends our understanding. In the warmth of His compassion, we find strength to face our fears head-on, knowing we are not alone on a dark sea. God’s deliverance doesn’t mean our circumstances will change. Instead, it offers a transformative inner peace that steadies our mind and heart. It empowers us to walk through life’s challenges with the realization that our faith in Him is stronger than the grip of fear.
Let us take solace in knowing that even when we feel afraid, God is ever-present, guiding us with His divine light. In the darkest moments, His love shines through, illuminating the path ahead. As we seek Him, He becomes our rock, our refuge, and our source of courage.”

Worry
(for someone who’s struggling)
Trusting God is hard.
Experience teaches us that, no matter what we’re doing, the odds of it working are a lot better if we know what’s going to happen. If we know how it’s going to work.
Then we can plan. We can prepare. We can set ourselves up to succeed. Before we start.
The thing is, we don’t always have the luxury of knowing what’s going to happen, or how it’s going to work. There are a lot of situations in life where it’s just not possible. Where there are so many variables, so many unknowns, that planning can quickly turn into what-iffing.
That powerful, downward spiral of second guessing and worry.
There’s only one thing that’s more powerful that that downward spiral. God.
God isn’t like us. God isn’t limited. There is no situation in life where there are too many variables, too many unknowns for God. There has never been, and never will be, a time when God says, “wow, I didn’t see that one coming!”
God has our best interests at heart. Always.
God loves us. Too much to leave us to helpless.
Because God loves us, He gives us His peace. Through the alternative to that powerful, downward spiral of second guessing and worry.
Trust. Letting go of worry, and trusting God to guide us. Especially when we can’t see what’s coming.
But even though trusting God makes perfect sense, we struggle to let go of worry. I know I do.
There’s a reason for that. Francis Chan put it well, “Worry implies that we don’t quite trust that God is big enough, powerful enough, or loving enough to take care of what’s happening in our lives.”
I’m afraid. In my heart, I struggle to believe that God is who He says He is. So I turn to someone who has failed me time and again. Me.
Before I know it, I’m back to that powerful, downward spiral of second guessing and worry.
The only way out? By God’s grace. A grace that God will give to anyone who asks.
Today, pray for peace.
Not out there, in some troubled place somewhere. Pray for peace in that troubled place in you.
Pray for peace in your heart. Ask God for the grace to trust Him.
Because trusting God is the beginning of peace.

Tyndale Life Application Daily Devotion

Devotional for May 29th
Household gods give worthless advice,        fortune-tellers predict only lies, and interpreters of dreams pronounce        falsehoods that give no comfort.        So my people are wandering like lost sheep;        they are attacked because they have no shepherd. — Zechariah 10:2
Insight
We often create idols of money, power, fame, or success, and then we expect them to give us happiness and security. But these idols can't supply what we need any more than a stone image can make it rain.
Challenge
How foolish it is to trust in idols. Instead, trust God's promises for your future.

When Trouble Knocks on Your Door
Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭12‬ When trouble comes, our human tendency is “fight or flight “. When we rely on fight or flight, we are in reality relying on our own power to accomplish a solution to the trouble we are in. Rather than fight or flight, Paul gives us three better options when trouble comes our way. First of all, he…
