At a certain point, it was just hard to keep up. They seemed to fall from the sky like fizzing raindrops, soaking everything in pure wildness—memes, that is. 2022 had an absolute bumper crop of memes. The fertile field of this year’s chaos was sown freely, resulting in some impressively widespread phenomena. Most of it remained pretty contained within the dashboard, but at the end of the year the biggest meme of them all broke containment…We’re getting ahead of ourselves here. 

Cast your mind back to January 2022. We kicked off the year with Horse Plinko, which soon joined forces with Eeby Deeby in a frenzy of flaming gifs in which the poor horse plinko’d its way to Super Hell. Nothing has ever summed up the mildly deranged meme generation process on Tumblr so perfectly. 

This era of memes merged smoothly with the Month of Blorbo. Can you believe blorbo from my shows is more or less purely a 2022 phenomenon? Granted, the original post happened in late 2021, but it was the new year by the time “blorbo” secured itself in our vocabulary. How did we even live our lives on Tumblr without the word “blorbo”? It’s impossible to even imagine at this point. 

Springtime dawned with the rise of Live Slug Reaction, which dominated the dashboard as everyone rushed to plop that shocked slug in the corner of their favorite gay moments from TV and film. And in May came a very important event that would define the rest of the year on Tumblr: the launch of Dracula Daily, Affectionately dubbed “tumblr book club,” the serialized email newsletter found a hugely involved following on Tumblr and spawned an infinite variety of memes, beginning with the iconic paprika recipes. 

The Summer of Morbius dominated Tumblr from June onwards, with everyone going bonkers with Morb-based puns, jokes about the film’s most ridiculous moments, and reblogging a single GIF somehow containing the entire movie that would crash your browser when it played on your dash..

The i love you x i love you y text post meme saw us to the end of the summer, and autumn came with the rise of the GOUGER. Or is it GOUGAR? Regardless, the strange but harmless creature took over everyone’s meme palette for a while, getting involved in increasingly silly scenarios. 

This free-for-all was interrupted by the death of Queen Elizabeth, an event that was solemn everywhere else. . But on Tumblr, of course, users swamped the dashboard with Queen Liz-related memes and commentary. And crabs. There were quite a lot of those.

Later, in September, the Try Guys saga unfolding on Twitter and YouTube filtered over to Tumblr in the form of the “lost focus and had a consensual workplace relationship” meme, with Tumblr users casting various favorite co-worker ships in the roles of the controversial real-life pairing. 

And finally, closing out the year, the meme you’ve all been waiting for: the one and only Goncharov (1973). Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Goncharov is a movie borne out of the magic combination of a misprinted shoe label and Tumblr’s fertile imagination. Thanks to a fake movie poster by user @beelzeebub, which gave names and faces to the characters, Tumblr ran absolutely wild, churning out analysis, fanart, and even fanfiction at an astounding rate. This was by far the meme to win 2022: it gained coverage all over the internet, including the freaking New York Times, and even Scorsese himself acknowledged it. You did that, Tumblr. Goncharov forever, all hail the power of the Tumblr meme!

Quartz probably has the best, though Ubi would be a close second. Meanwhile, Amma and Yra are fairly tied for last, but Yra probably has the worst.

Lapiz, considering they're still young (and they're aroace.) And maybe Ubi too

4. which oc can cook? what’s their favorite thing to cook?

Quartz can cook and bake! She loved making bread, and anything to do with bread!

8. which oc prefers flowing clothes? tight clothes?

Yra prefers flowing clothes (both for trans reasons and cuz it makes them look cool.) Amma prefers tight clothes, cuz she needs her clothes to stay out of the way (she's a swordswoman and an actress on the side!)

12. what oc is the best at dealing with stress? how do they deal with it?

Quartz, definitely. Woman is the queen of stress relief tactics, from journaling, to art, to deep breathing, and to self care.

14. which oc makes their bed every morning? which one thinks it’s a waste of time?

Quartz is very neat, so she always makes sure to make her bed! Meanwhile, Lapiz is a messy teen who is constantly just running around, and thinks it's a waste of time.

Yra, definitely. "No, Amma, I did not cry. You were just imagining things. Shut up Amma."

21. which oc is a lightweight? which oc carries them home?

Quartz would probably be pretty lightweight, though I don't think she'd really drink all that much. Her and Ubi would be the designated drivers most of the time, so they end up having to deal with Amma and Yra drunk.

22. which oc likes to read to their partner? which oc prefers being read to?

I can imagine Quartz reading to her partner (or her sister, Amma.) I also think Amma would like reading to people, considering she is an actress. Yra would enjoy getting ready to (though he'd definitely deny it if Amma tries to bring it up lol)

Ubi. Don't really have much else to say lol

Lapiz would try to start a podcast about technology and stuff like that! Not sure how well it would go, but they would try!

Amma, definitely. But Ubi, and I mean this in the most loving way possible, would be the type of guy to wear shorts when it's snowing.

Ubi and Lapiz. They try to convince Yra, but it thinks they're just being silly (he does actually get scared from one of their stories, but they'd never admit it)

Ubi. And he has a very Tumblr-y vocab (scrunkly, horse plinko, eeby deeby, stuff like that. No one knows what he's talking about. Lapiz starts to pick up on these speech habits, much to everyone's dismay)

Quartz, though Amma is a very close second.

Well, the name Amma actually comes from a conversation I had with my older sibling where we were talking about names that are palindromes, and I came up with Amma, which they insisted was not a name. Also, Yra comes from the Latin word for anger, ira! And Ubi comes from Latin too! It means "where," and it's actually a nickname given to him by Lapiz, because he sucks with directions. Lapiz is the only one who knows his birth name.

40. if all your ocs were to get into a giant, mcu style fight, who would win?

Either Amma or Yra. Probably Yra.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish!

Note: Probably going to be spoilers for this Awesome Movie

Blorbo: Puss in Boots. Like my goodness, have you seen the character growth he went through in this movie? It's wonderful. It's amazing. It's learning not to take your life (or lives in this case) for granted and just. Living in the moment, with people you love and trust. I love that! God, that scene that cut to him sitting at a campfire alone killed me.

Scrunkly: Perrito! I love Perrito. At first, you think he's one of those comedy-relief characters who's too purposefully written to be annoying, but he's just such a genuinely sweet character who sees the best in everyone and everything. He wants to be a therapy dog, which I think probably comes from his own tragic backstory that he is... very likely repressing. He's an example of 'terrible things can happen to you, but you can still choose to be a good person in spite of that'. He's a sweet little lad and I love him.

Scrimblo Bimblo: You could consider the last wish itself to be a character, or more specifically, the forest itself. Because my goodness, it feels almost as if the forest itself is designed to help you come to peace with your trauma and your issues. The last wish isn't something that it's trying to protect--it's like the wish itself is enchanting the forest so that people will become at peace and realize that they don't need a wish to solve their problems. I just think it's rather interesting and wholesome--and I love how, at the end, the characters realized that they didn't need a wish to be happy.

Glup Shitto: Jimminy Cricket deserved better. How dare they shove him on the shoulder of an irredeemable asshole. It's hilarious. I hope he's not dead.

Poor little meow meow: Is there one in here...? I guess Puss would also apply to this, as well. Like, goodness. Once again, I loved his whole storyline so much.

Horse Plinko: Puss and Kitty! I love how Kitty's character is more about how she could never find concretely somebody that she could trust, and how Puss' fear time and time again got in the way of showing her that he could be trusted. Because he didn't trust her! He didn't trust her enough to tell her anything about what he's going through right now! And that fear--though understandable--is shown to be something that can and does hurt other people! I appreciate Kitty. She's a good character.

Eeby Deeby: I'm delighted to inform you that Big Jack Horner is dead. I love the charisma of the character, but I hate the character himself, and I believe that was the intention. I'm going to die if he becomes the next Tumblr sexyman. Because that's just a thing that would happen, isn't it?

They’re disappointing, but you need that to move on.

Many years ago, in a different life, in a different apartment, I read John Cleese’s autobiography, and it was pleasant. It was normal most of the time, funny a bunch of times, and absolutely hilarious on a few occasions. It left me feeling good. I wasn’t so excited about him defending his right to make fun of other cultures, but he emphasized that it needs to be done with kindness, so I didn’t linger on it. (It was like one paragraph.) I’m not a Python superfan, but for better or worse, they did grandfather an absurdist satire, that in some way is a predecessor to even the dadaist deep-fried gen z memes.

(Aside: I’m not on twitter and I don’t care about anything happening there, much less now that a (not-so-)cryptofascist owns it.)

Pre-pandamic, I bought tickets to see Cleese’s show, which got delayed a year, then 2 more years, and then moved back a year. I’ve never seen Pythons live, and with his age, I knew I never would otherwise - plus, it’s been a few years since I saw a live stand-up.

Cleese is 82? 83? and it shows. I’m not going to analyze his every joke and try to make judgments about whether he’s a Good Person or not, because it’s not my role. I sat there thinking, he’s more than twice my age, would I also be like this if I lived to 80? Will I be entertaining people because it’s in part some childhood trauma, to cheer up a severely depressed parent? Will I linger to some way of speaking that was not just okay, but refreshingly anti-establishment when I was young, which will age poorly and become poor taste?

Will being on tumblr be the new “i’m buddies with harvey epstein”? Will “by Talos” jokes be offensive? Will skyrim loading screen parodies be inappropriate? Will the b-word be reclaimed, more offensive than ever before, or re-reclaimed?

I’m still in denial about being at a risk of being in my 40s in a few years. I wasn’t afraid of 30s at all, and these were intensely interesting years, but nothing about my identity feels like it belongs in 40s. I don’t want to be 40 on tumblr. I don’t want to be 40 and single. I don’t want to be 40 and employed. I don’t want to be 40 and unemployed. I don’t want to be 40 in a new relationship. And I sure don’t want to be 40 trying to catch up on pop culture, trends, shifts in vocabulary and fashion and I don’t want to have an invisible committee to judge me because I missed their hive mind decision about what’s right and wrong.

And to be clear - I don’t want to stop growing and learning and trying to be better, kinder, and more respectful. I don’t want to defend my right to say some stupid offensive stuff. But every year it’s easier to miss major movements in pop culture, because there’s so much of it. Paying attention to it is a full time job. I barely caught up with eeby deeby blorbo glup shitto plinko horse in time for it to still be funny; and I love the organic growth and mutation of good memes, their death and eventual revival and remixing with newer memes. But every year I have less attention to give to everything, and life becomes more about choosing what really matters. (Laying on the couch and complaining on your blog.)

She's scared of rats but she's Link's hype man, and she's just so good. She's doesn't want to be here at first and she just wants her body back, but she's doing her best!

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Link. I mean he's a toon Link how can you not baby him? He has all those expressions and smallness. Also put him and Zelda together and they just squish.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Anjean. Sure she's just your generic old lady quest NPC but she wrangles those kids well, and has tragic angst with one of the bad guys. Plus, steam powered wheelchair things that all the guardian Lokomo have are really cool I want one. Also! She does /not/ know all of the things. She's the elderly mentor lady but she's taken off guard and needs to be taught more info and I like that.

I mean look at him, with his anxiety but desperate need to find and look after the princess, even putting on a bad disguise to get you to take him all over the world to try find her. He's the dad she needs but appears not to have.

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): I'm not sure I have one in Spirit Tracks. Hm. Is saying I like the rabbit guy and his wife controversial? I /like/ the rabbit haven and catching bunnies. Even if I think Bunio should put a longer shirt on. Does that work? I can't really think of anyone else... If you liked Cole or somehting, but I don't. And I already used Staven for the next option...

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Staven (Byrne for you Americans out there). He's not really a favourite, but I would like to pick him apart and examine his innards while squinting at him.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): The fortune teller I'm sorry I know she's not evil or anything I just cannot stand the fact I have to go through the stupid fortune telling thing using the mic whenever I need anything from her, and half of it is generically scammy.

Now Tolkien stuff, lets see what I can remember...

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): Elrond. I mean that's just easy. You'd think its Earendil from the rest of this list, but I absolutely promise you its Elrond.

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): I was going to put him elsewhere but, no, this one has to be Earendil. I cannot really comprehend with putting anyone else here. Kid Earendil in the Fall of Gondolin drafts, the only place he gets to speak rather than just be referenced, is my little one. Even when he grows up I keep him there.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Tuor is a fun character actually. (I... yes okay this family name is cool).

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): ... Does Celebrimbor count? Erestor? No? Okay I'm actually going to pick three people - Falathar, Erellont, and Aerandir. They get like a single line, BUT they are the dudes who sailed with Earendil and I can fit so so so many headcanons into them.

Children of Hurin was the second Tolkien book I ever read, my parents mistaking me losing a free bookmark advertising it in the bathroom as a hint I wanted it for Christmas. I definitely read it too young, and it definitely leaves influences on things.

Kane Chronicles for the fandom ask?

Anon, I went a tiny bit feral here, but I need you to understand that I love these characters very, very much.

Blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): I would fight God for Sadie Kane. Love the way she'll kick someone's ass into the great beyond one moment and then stutter because her crush looked at her the next, love her relationship with Carter and how she knows that she adores him and will rely on him at the end of the world, no questions asked, love how calculating she can get, I love the fact that she insists on her dyed hair and leather combat boots, judgy grandparents and magic rules be damned.

She refuses to doubt herself because people are counting on her, damn it, she'll be enough and yes, she is that good, and I just think she's neat.

Scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Felix Philip and his band of penguins. I mean, how can I not?

Scrimblo Bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Amos Kane, which is a predictable answer for me. The fact that he goes from being possessed by Set, trying so hard to protect Carter and Sadie, that the aftermath canonically sends him into a depressive episode and leaves him with PTSD, and then turns around and willingly takes on Set to help save the world? Fuck yeah.

Also, he's got the best music taste in the Riordanverse. I'm not taking arguments on this front.

Glup Shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Cheating to pick two, but Emma and Liz! I really wish they had shown up more. They and Sadie must've been absolute terrors in grade school, and I think the truest display of friendship is when your friend shows up with superpowers and possessed grandparents on her birthday, and your immediate response is to turn around to said possessed grandparents and declare your best friend is about to kick their ass. I have headcanons for days about these three.

Poor Little Meow Meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Vladimir Menshikov, because Riordan dropped a Russian horror movie antagonist into TKC and thought I wouldn't notice.

Horse Plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Carter Kane, because torturing Carter requires torturing everyone else, so this is really a cheating answer, really. Also, we never really got an analogue to Sadie's birthday adventure in London, and emotionally torturing Carter while watching him magically MacGuyver his way out of certain death would be fun (We come kinda close with him finding Actual Zia Rashid and then Setne in Demon Land, but both times result in Carter needing to have his ass hauled out of the fire by someone else).

Eeby Deeby (character I would send to superhell): Setne. There's no secret motive here, he's just one of those characters you want to smack in the face a couple dozen times.

(I thought about sending Zia, but she's annoyingly well-adjusted in canon and I like her far too much, so there's no inherent fun in sending her there by herself)

Moiraine. she’s just so driven and fully aware of her limitations and willing to sacrifice anything to save the world. she’s one of the few people in the series who don’t let their preconceptions steer their perceptions of the world. the willpower to keep struggling, to keep fighting, to fulfil her duty even as she begins to lose Rand? outstanding. her sense of humour? fantastic. woman made an awful pun about the Ways and smiled at her own joke and I was hooked

Egeanin. the woman recognizes something doesn’t add up and straight-up radicalizes herself. then trips over these two clowns and instead of going ‘what the fuck’, forcibly becomes their new best friend. she’s just so eager to do what’s right. she also calls Gawyn a fucking moron, so we stan.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)

*looks pointedly at username* (less so on tumblr than elsewhere probably tho) do I have a Thing about warriors forced into situations out of their control and trying to cope with memory loss? definitely I do. she has every right to nope the fuck out, but instead she picks herself up and does what she can with the cards she’s been dealt. and the reluctant captain-general engineering that rescue bid? talented. brilliant. incredible. amazing.

Bera & Kiruna (a.k.a. Moiraine & Siuan v1.0). oh, to be equally strong pillowfriends from different social classes entering the Tower around the same time, advancing in lockstep at an unprecedented pace, and then choosing the same Ajah when raised to the shawl, only to get sent on a fool’s errand and spend months trekking back and forth across the continent on the world’s worst honeymoon with your seven warders in tow.

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most) ...Lan Wangji. I don't know he's just compelling. He's a mood.

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped) Wen Ning? Yeah. Wen Ning. Lan Zhan hit me like this initially and I still want to obnoxiously pinch his cheeks sometimes but he's just so much of a dick also. Oddly not Sizhui much as I love him, I weirdly have too much respect and also the camerawork in The Untamed kept handling A-Yuan like a prop instead of a character and it squicked me out.

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) Oh this is harder, there aren't like. That many side characters allowed in mxtx's writing style, and everyone seems to have a little fandom of their own atm due to the high pitch the fandom's running at. Jiang Yanli. She is criminally underrated, sometimes even by people who like her. I saw a fic the other day tagged 'make jiang yanli relatable' and I'm like maybe she's not to YOU. Maybe she's just not for you! She's pretty thinly written in the novel but she's got a reasonable character core and her drama actress did great work! (Do not talk to me about animated Jiang Yanli pls.) Particularly underrated is the part of her power move at Phoenix Mountain where she declares wwx is her little brother, and should be regarded as such wrt things like whether she needs a chaperone to be alone with him, because like. He's definitely never been formally adopted, so the only way for that to be literally true is if he actually was Jiang Fengmian's bastard. So what she's doing there is drawing the line that her dead father's reputation is expendable if it will help protect and maintain her connection to her living foster-brother, which in that social context is bananas. This woman knows her own weaknesses intimately but she is fearless.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) For reasons cited above this is literally impossible unless I want watch The Untamed enough times I memorize the extras' faces and pick a fave from amongst them, which admittedly I would if I did. Maybe it'd be that guy who's sitting with Lan Qiren basically in his lap, after he goes down in the cursed objects saferoom trying to deal with the arm, because that guy is a real champ for watching Hanguang-Jun and this random flute maniac music together at the problem like that, and just rolling with it. I wonder how many scenes that guy would turn out to be in if I did. I wonder how many sects he belongs to lol. But it's Ouyang Zizhen. He gets left out all the time, including from scenes he is definitely supposed to be in in the donghua, and I adore him.

But. He's also the MC. So. Oh, it's Lan Xichen. He is very pathetic by the end of things and while his popularity in-universe is titanic he's got a lot of live human haters and people who hold him casually in contempt. As we know from the existence of the Oldest Sibling Cinematic Universe, he is my Jane Bennett and I love him.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) Jin Guangshan I suppose, he is The Worst. Nie Huaisang already basically handled sending Jin Guangyao to the torment dimension, and he doesn't really inspire that kind of aggressive impulse in me anyway I just want him to cease from problems. Oh. Lmao it's Xue Yang then I suppose. I really, really want that guy to die and stay dead. Which is after all the true meaning of superhell.
