A word where Mariko was reborn in Minato's gen and takes Obito/and or Rin under her wing.
Madara is tring to brainwash Obito at the cave and a wall bursts open to revel a furious Mariko.
Sometimes assaulting the elderly is the correct and moral choice -Mariko's mission report.
*tired dog sigh*
"You're in a hurry, Rin," Obito observes as his teammate rushes around the training ground, gathering all their kunai and shuriken with greater urgency than the rest of the team. Obito in particular, Minato notes with some amusement. "Are you going somewhere?"
"Mariko-senpai is back in-village and promised to let me shadow her on her shift," she says with a smile, not pausing. "She won't wait for me if I'm late."
"Sounds like a policy we should adopt," Kakashi mutters, too quiet for Obito to hear or no doubt there would be a loud squabble.
Instead, Obito just raises an eyebrow. "I'm still not convinced she exists, y'know."
Rin does pause at that and straightens, if only to be seen rolling her eyes unobstructed. "Just because she keeps getting called away when I mean to introduce you--"
"It's been three times!"
"She's Konoha's best trauma medic since Tsunade-sama!" Rin returns exasperatedly. "She's busy!"
"She totally doesn't exist! She's made up! A mass genjutsu!"
Minato is pretty sure Obito is mostly just teasing.
"Sensei knows she exists--they went to Academy together!"
All three pairs of eyes turn to him at that, and Minato has to swallow back his grimace.
"Maa."
"Sensei!"
"Mariko-san definitely exists, Obito," he says, drawing out a scowl from the boy.
A mass genjutsu might have been kinder to his ego, after all, than the very real woman who, upon seeing his completed Hiraishin, scoffed and implied that he was a two-bit ninja who needed seals to perform an E-rank jutsu.

Be honest, who’s messy? The instigators, the starters, and the ones who mind their business?
Instigators
Naruto is obviously ready and willing to start a fight (emotionally, physically, what have you) with his whole being. He can totally make a speech while he’s doing it, but he’s also going to instigate the conversation that leads to a grand friendship speech.
Deidara wants to throw hands and talk shit at all times, always. He hones in on any insecurities and picks on them in order to get the ball rolling.
Ok, you may disagree, but at one point in life Rock Lee was fully trying to start shit for no reason (re: chunin exams, challenging Sasuke before the first portion). When he knows he’s got it, he’s got it.
Tsunade’s hands continue to be rated ‘E’ for everyone.
Sakura emulates her shishou and is messy in every way, shape, and form.
Kiba is ready to rumble. He is raised by glorious, competent lesbians and needs to make sure he isn’t falling short of their reputation, you know.
Hidan finds joy in picking fights with passersby, especially if they seem to be the type to appease Jashin (aka, absolutely miserable).
Obito has one brain cell, and that brain cell is dedicated to making a great fool of himself. Of course he’s starting some shit, then getting beaten up about it.
Hear me out: Hashirama is an instigator, for he is screaming his plans for beauteous peace across the battlefield at Madara at any given time, just desperately hoping he picks up on what he’s putting down.
Madara finds everyone ugly, untalented, and in need of a beating. Hashirama is neither ugly nor untalented, but he clearly needs a firm lesson in what can and cannot be expressed.
Not starting, but finishing
Tbh, Tobirama would be a brutal combatant and not hesitate to put an aggressor in the ground. Also, he listens to gossip when it finds him. It’s super useful to know what’s happening!
Orochimaru is not in the habit of instigating altercations, but his teammate is Tsunade. He knows how to deal with a fight. He also deals, like, a lot of psychic damage.
Shino can get into it, if need be. His bugs tend to sap people of their chakra pretty quickly, especially if they are not expecting it, so thats his go-to. He...does not know what he would do in emotional warfare, so he hopes to not deal with it.
Kakashi has no desire to initiate a confrontation unless it is teasing and/or he can leave at a moment’s notice. He can beat anyone’s ass and probably talk circles around most people, but he doesn’t particularly want to. He has a reputation to uphold.
Sasuke barely fits into this category. He waits until someone else starts with him first, but he’s already prepared. He probably goaded them into lunging at him, tbh. This was fully premeditated on his part.
MYOB
Hinata would observe fights breaking out in front of her and either abscond or start preparing some first aid materials. A brief cry might be in order, should Neji deliver another soliloquy on how she is inept.
Might Guy may have a myriad of challenges for Kakashi, but he’s not messy! He’s wholesome and sweet and wants everyone to have a wondrous time.
Zetsu is comically underwhelmed by everything, I fear.

.
It starts small. One crate, every other week. Tsunade Senju doesn’t walk back into the shop again, but you can sometimes see her peering at you from a half-open back window of a tinted car parked outside Root & Stem.
It’s Kakashi you deal with, though. And that’s much easier because he doesn’t seem like the sort of person to let a little sarcasm or challenge through him off course.
Tsunade is less predictable; you think she wouldn’t take kindly to your occasionally acerbic responses to the situation, but Kakashi takes them in stride—teasing and flirting with you rather than getting annoyed, seeming to understand being asked to front for a criminal organization might not be everyone’s dream position. He lets you spar verbally with him without it impacting the arrangement or having you murdered.
The bell tinkles above his head every other Tuesday, always late enough in the day the shop is empty, and you wonder if they staked the place out before extending the agreement to you, watched to see when they could be certain you would be alone.
You don’t see who takes the crate. Kakashi always greets you and then walks straight through to the back of the shop to undo the deadbolt. He holds the door open, blocking the new camera you installed, as someone takes it away.
You never see what’s inside it, either, which is more frustrating. It’s always the same bland “SHOP OWNER” address, the same heavy crate that takes you seven and a half sweat-soaked minutes to drag inside from the loading dock—a far cry from the original half-hour, at least, as you’ve gotten used to the weight. Usually, Kakashi appears the same day the crate does, though on a few occasions, he arrives the day after.
When you ask Asuma if you can pry the crate open when this happens the second time, he growls at you through your phone, “Do not—I repeat, do not—endanger yourself or your assignment because of fucking curiosity. You got that, Detective?”
“Yes, sir,” you say, gnawing roughly at your bottom lip.
The next day, Kakashi saunters in, as unbothered as ever, greeting you with a grating, “Afternoon, sweetheart,” as he makes way through the shop. You grit your teeth as you listen to the best evidence against Tsunade Senju scrape its way out the back door and try to remember Asuma’s assurance that it’s not only Tsunade you’re after, but the entire Sannin organization.
You’re so deep in your brooding, you hardly notice Kakashi’s return to counter until he asks, a little too loudly, “How much do I owe you?”
You’re careful not to give away your surprise at his proximity—that you hadn’t heard him return from the back is a problem you’ll chastise yourself for privately later—and make some perfunctory notes in your ledger, not bothering to look up at him.
“Kind of in a hurry here, sweetheart.”
You don’t even roll your eyes at the insulting nickname as you slide a bouquet across the counter and give him a random total, knowing he’ll hand you an envelope with many times the actual worth of the flowers, regardless of what you say.
When you don’t feel the weight of the envelope immediately in your open palm, you do finally flick your eyes up to meet his.
“Something wrong?” you ask, but Kakashi just smirks.
“I just wanted to see those pretty eyes before I left.”
He hands you the money and turns on his heels to leave without another word.
You refuse to admit your face feels warm as the bell chimes his leaving.
Two weeks later, it’s the same. Kakashi walks in, giving you a two-fingered salute on his way past the counter. You hear the deadbolt slide open, the scrape of the heavy crate over the tiles—the deliveries have worn a terrible gouge in the floor already—and then the door closes again, the deadbolt returned to its rightful place.
Kakashi never places an actual order for a bouquet—not since those first two—so you’ve taken to experimenting with the arrangements you give him, using them as an opportunity to improve your feigned craft. Just because you’re undercover doesn’t mean you can’t take pride in your work, after all, and practice makes… better, at least.
You’ll never be a good florist, certainly, but you can at least be a fair one.
Sometimes, when you’re tired or particularly irritated, you provide him a simple bunch of the same blooms, daisies or carnations when you have too many of them or they’re beginning to wilt, roses once when the person who ordered the bouquet never showed to pick it up—a tale of heartbreak, no doubt, which you occupy yourself cultivating the rest of that afternoon, spinning tales of young lovers kept apart by circumstance or family until you’re finally able to go home.
More often, though, you take your time creating something a little ostentatious. Partly because you still have a lot of dead time to fill in the shop—as evidenced by your daydreaming of star-crossed, flowerless lovers—and partly because you find it amusing to watch him awkwardly exit the shop with an arrangement so big it obscures his vision. You imagine Tsunade Senju’s indignant sputtering when he brings the over-the-top thing into her car and the visual of her sneezing as the pungent floral scent hits her nose prompts a self-satisfied smile to spread a little viciously across your face.
Today is such a day. When Kakashi returns to the front of the shop, he whistles, looking at the bouquet resting near your elbow, all ready for him.
“Oh, darling, you shouldn’t have,” he says dramatically, picking up the arrangement and turning it in his grasp, admiring the sprawling dahlias and ferns, the bright orange lilies. “You’re getting much better.”
You hardly spare him an exasperated glance as you answer, “Nice to know my floral arrangements now appeal to criminals who don’t pay for them. I’ll be sure to put that on my next flyer.”
You don’t expect the deep roar of laughter your half-hearted sarcasm pulls from Kakashi’s mouth and you actually jump, snapping your pencil in half because the sound startles you so.
When you look at him, Kakashi’s whole face is lit with amusement, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he laughs, head tilted back, the bouquet still clasped in one hand.
Your eyebrows draw tight together as you frown. “It wasn’t that funny,” you mumble, taken aback by his response.
“No, it wasn’t,” Kakashi says as his laughter finally comes under control, “it’s just…” he starts, dark eyes appraising you openly, “when I first walked in here, I thought you were going to be such a dull little mouse and you’re not, you’re… more like a spider, somehow. Small and unassuming, with an unexpected bite.”
He snaps his jaw on the last consonant and your scalp tingles at the sharp sound of his teeth colliding. Your mouth attempts to curve up at the ends in response to the compliment, but you refuse to let it as Kakashi continues to inspect your handiwork.
“You do have a really lovely eye for color,” he says finally, plopping the overfull envelope down on the counter as a car horn blares from outside—Tsunade, no doubt, impatient for his return. “See you soon.”
The compliment lingers with you the rest of the day, replaying through your mind as you staple receipts to invoices and reconcile your little handwritten ledger with the accounting documents on the ancient computer in your office.
You do have a really lovely eye for color.
It’s a stupid thing to take pride in, but you feel your chest swell with the feeling, anyway, as you lock up the shop and head back to your apartment.
All the payments you’ve received from Kakashi—minus whatever arbitrarily charged price you subtract for the actual bouquets you provide him—are stashed in a portable safe in your closet. When you get home, you roll the thing out and use your thumb to pop open the door, setting the envelope inside, the date and amount already scrawled on the outer flap.
You stare at the contents of the safe for a long while that night, mentally calculating how much money is currently in your possession.
Nearly as much as your annual salary, after just over two months of taking deliveries. You wonder again how any reasonable person could turn down such an opportunity at wealth, especially if they were already struggling.
When Kakashi offered you the deal originally, he made it sound like you could decline, like it was nothing more than a business proposition between equals. He was certainly good at his job, because you almost believed him, despite all the evidence to the contrary—the crime scene photos of civilians who hadn’t agreed to work with the Sannin when similar such offers were made.
Your police ID and the case file on the Sannin, as well as Teuchi and Ayame’s disappearance, are also kept in the safe, away from any potentially prying eyes. Sometimes, you pull out the files to reread them before bed, or simply gaze at the happily smiling faces of the father daughter duo when you need a reminder of why you’re working such a dull job. Tonight, you don’t bother, simply closing the door and waiting for the telltale hum and beep as the safe locks again before stowing it away in your closet.
Asuma doesn’t call, so you order some takeout for pickup, enjoying the walk to Yakiniku-Q, hands shoved into the pockets of your light bomber jacket.
Your apartment is a not unreasonable walk to and from Root & Stem, which has certainly made the new commute tolerable. When it does finally get too cold, you can take the train one stop to cut the walk in half, which will help.
You smell Yakiniku-Q before you see it, inhaling the aroma greedily as your stomach rumbles.
Maybe you shouldn’t have ordered takeout, you think, because you’re not sure you’ll make it back to your apartment before ripping open the bag and stuffing your face in the middle of the street.
Choji greets you when you walk in, and you smile.
“Hey, Choji, I placed an order to-go.”
“No problem Miss Takiko, just a second!”
You don’t bother to correct him as he bustles toward the kitchen in search of your order, too hungry to bother. Instinctively, your eyes scan each of the tables in the small restaurant, cataloguing faces and body language—always looking for any signs of someone or something out of place.
You smile a little when you see your handiwork scattered throughout the restaurant—powdery blue morning glories and yellow chrysanthemums.
You don’t allow your gaze to linger on the circular booth in the back once you recognize its occupants, though you want nothing more than to stare or slide in beside them to hear what they’re discussing. Your fists clench a little tighter in your jacket pockets, but you still manage to greet Choji with a friendly smile when he returns with your order, pay him with cash and assure him you can carry the overstuffed bag—it looks like maybe they threw in a few extras for you—just fine on your own.
You take the train back to your apartment, so you’ll get there faster, and abandon your dinner on the counter the moment you’re inside, instead shucking your coat and pulling out your cellphone to call Asuma.
He answers on the second ring.
“What’s wrong?” he asks—no preamble, no niceties. He knows if you’re calling, there’s a purpose.
“I think the Sannin are trying to broker a deal with the Uchiha.”
#
You get no sleep that night, going over and over and over your observations with Asuma and eventually his father. There’s little to go on, but much to speculate.
“You’re certain?” Hiruzen asks again, voice gruff from not only smoking but exhaustion.
“Yes, Sir. Tsunade Senju, her associate Kakashi Hatake, and Fugaku Uchiha were seated together. I also saw the back of someone’s head. Based on the hair, I’d say likely Fugaku’s son Itachi, but I can’t be sure. Definitely an Uchiha, though.”
“Fugaku wouldn’t go without at least one other,” Hiruzen agrees.
The revelation is apparently as surprising to the two Sarutobi officers as it was to you. The Uchiha had been so careful since the botched undercover mission led by Anko. Her attempts to infiltrate the organization had only driven them further underground, making it increasingly difficult for any law enforcement agency to track their movements.
Last anyone knew, Madara Uchiha was still the leader of the crime family, but Fugaku’s appearance with one of the Sannin hints there may be trouble brewing in the ranks, or even that a coup might have already quietly taken place.
You’re not sure whether stumbling on Fugaku’s meeting with Tsunade is fortuitous or ominous, but you know it will mean hours of research and investigation on the parts of your comrades at the police station.
You stay up late with Hiruzen and Asuma, devising a plan for additional undercover officers to stake out Yakiniku-Q and other places in Konoha once frequented by the Uchiha. The first rays of sun are peeking through your windows by the time you finally eat your dinner, and you manage no more than a cold shower before you drag yourself back out the door of your apartment to Root & Stem.
It is this exhaustion, you decide, which is to blame for your unobservant nature. Because when you get to the shop, clambering in through the back door a bit more noisily than usual, it takes much longer than it should for you to realize you are not alone.
The light is on in your office, and you can hear the chair squeak beneath someone’s shifting weight.
Your .38 is concealed in a hidden compartment of your bag, but you worry using it might blow your cover depending on who’s snooping through your records. Instead, you drop the bag to the ground, pull a pair of garden shears from a hook by the door, and creep slowly toward the office, listening for any movement from within.
Whoever’s there must certainly have heard you enter the shop, so any chance of catching them by surprise is long gone.
Instead, you play your part of the terrified shop owner well, calling out a timid, “Who’s there? I have a weapon!” as you get closer.
The faint chuckle gives away your intruder’s identity before you swing into the open doorway, shears held before you like you’re giving an interview using a particularly pointed microphone.
Kakashi Hatake leans back in your ancient computer chair, feet propped up on your desk and hands folded over his middle. His smirk is infuriating and part of you wants to jab the garden shears into his eye until he stops smiling for good.
“Good morning, sweetheart. Sleep well?”
You drop the shears, glaring at him irritably. “What are you doing here?”
It’s a fair question, even for Takiko to ask, and Kakashi knows it. Your eyes flick to the computer screen, noting that he’s already closed out of whatever he was prying into because all that remains visible is a YouTube video of puppies struggling to walk down a set of carpeted stairs.
“My internet’s out,” he says, gesturing toward the screen.
You cross your arms over your chest and lean against the doorframe. “How’d you get in?”
His smile broadens. “Is that really a question?” he asks, “I think you’re smart enough not be surprised.”
You shake your head in mock frustration and head toward the front of the shop, slamming the shears down on the counter as you begin turning on lights in preparation for opening.
“It is too early for this shit,” you mutter under your breath as you remove your jacket and pull your apron on instead.
Too early or too late, actually, you aren’t entirely sure which.
“I’m sorry to stop by unannounced,” Kakashi says as he joins you in the main shop area, not sounding at all sorry, “but I wanted to ask how your dinner was. I found the dumplings a tad overdone, myself.”
The hair at the back of your neck prickles, despite your training.
Fuck.
“I’m sorry?” you ask, turning to face him. “I’m not sure I follow.”
He stares at you for a moment longer than necessary, dark gaze measured and level as he sweeps his eyes over your entire body in a way that makes you feel suddenly self-conscious—and also immeasurably grateful you aren’t carrying a weapon anywhere on your person, certain he’d notice if you were.
“I know you saw us,” he says, all the teasing lilt in his voice replaced with cool finality, “Don’t play dumb, it’s beneath you.”
You clench your teeth and then shrug. “I assumed if you wanted me to be part of your dinner party, I would’ve been invited. I was just picking up takeout, anyway. The Akimichi family are good customers.”
Kakashi nods thoughtfully. “I thought I recognized your handiwork in the florals.”
You duck your eyes to avoid his piercing gaze and dig your toe into the floor.
“I didn’t mean to see you,” you whisper softly, “and it’s not like I’m going to say anything, even if I knew who you were talking to.”
Kakashi hums. “That would be wise,” he confirms, “Tsunade was not pleased to see you there last night. She doesn’t like mixing business with… other business.”
You snort, meeting his eyes again. “I don’t think Tsunade is ever pleased to see me.”
Kakashi chuckles a little. “You might be right, but she’s very particular, so I wouldn’t take it personally.”
You take a deep breath and continue setting up shop, pulling florals from the fridge behind the counter to set out on the display tables and watering the peace lilies and succulents. All the while, Kakashi watches you—you can feel his eyes on you like his stare actually has weight.
“Is there something else you need?” you ask, finally, “Because if you’re just going to stand there, you can at least make yourself useful and open the blinds or something.”
Kakashi says nothing, but walks to the windows and lifts the shades, letting the early morning sun bathe Root & Stem in soft golden light.
“You look tired,” he says when he finishes, “trouble at home?”
You hadn’t even bothered to put makeup on this morning, instead tossing some concealer and lip gloss into your bag for later. A decision which you now regret.
“Romantic trouble,” you offer quietly, “boyfriend’s not a fan of my new hours. Kept me up all night on the phone just to break up with me.”
“Really?” Kakashi asks, clearly skeptical, “mind if I see?”
You frown indignantly at him. “See what, exactly?”
“Your phone,” he says, as if it’s a perfectly reasonable request. “Take a peek at the call logs.”
You shake your head, letting out an incredulous huff of laughter. “I don’t think we know one another that well,” you say.
But Kakashi’s face hardens, almost, imperceptibly, and he adds, “I’m not asking.”
You shake your head again before stomping to pick up your bag where you dropped it by the back door, tearing your cellphone out and tossing it at him so quickly you see the cool veneer crack just a little as he fumbles it.
“The passcode is 7-6-6-8.”
Kakashi mulls this for a moment and then smiles, “ROOT,” he says, “I like it.”
You watch as Kakashi opens your phone and begins swiping through your call logs. Asuma is, of course, saved under a different name—Iruka, the sweet high school boyfriend you left behind when you moved away for university. The nightly calls won’t seem suspicious for a relationship, and the long hours you spent on the phone last night will align well enough with your story.
“Huh,” Kakashi says, “cute.”
“What’s cute?” you ask, confused.
He turns your phone toward you, revealing a picture of you posing in a sundress at a street festival the previous summer, smile wide and bright as you enjoy the warm breeze, one hand holding a sunhat firmly in place on your head.
You swipe the device from his hands. “Give me that!” You quickly exit out of the album and lock the screen. “You can’t just go through someone else’s pictures, what’s wrong with you?”
Of course, anything remotely personal or not in line with your undercover identity has already been erased—just enough information left on the device to make it look like you use it. Mostly, that means photographs of floral arrangements used to populate Root & Stem’s meager social media profiles, as well as the occasional picture of food or a sunset.
How far back did he scroll to find that picture?
“To be honest, I was hoping maybe you would have something a little spicier in there,” he says, “maybe a photo you hoped might keep Iruka around.”
You throw a block of floral foam across the room, and it falls woefully short of its target, too light to carry itself all the way to Kakashi’s head, where you’d aimed. He picks up the block and pops it back on the counter, leaning across it toward you.
“You don’t text much,” Kakashi says.
“I’m not really a big fan. Prefer talking face-to-face.”
“Mm.”
You’re annoyed, and sure Kakashi can tell as much. You just hope he can’t also sense the underlying nervousness—or at least, if he does, you hope it’s the right amount for a shop keeper being scrutinized by her less than savory associate’s bodyguard and not a cop trying to maintain their cover.
Suddenly, you wonder if bodyguard is the right word for whatever Kakashi is to Tsunade.
“What are you doing with the cash we give you?” he asks, then. “It’s not in your records.”
You lean back against the wall behind the counter, careful not to jostle any of the vases on the display shelf.
“So that’s why you were on my computer.”
“Well, that and the adorable dog videos. Like I said, my internet is down.”
You stare at Kakashi for a moment before you respond to his original question. “I didn’t think accounting entries for monies illegally obtained were a good idea on my tax documents,” you explain, “so I’ve been keeping it separate, in a safe at my home.”
Kakashi tuts, shaking his head, “And what are you going to do with that money? Cash it in all at once? There will be questions about where it came from if you don’t start leaving a believable trail.”
You stare at him for a few extended seconds, “I don’t see how the way I use my money is any of your business.”
His lip curls cruelly on one side, “Now sweetheart, that’s where you’re very wrong. Because if questions arise about where you got that money, it could come back to us.”
“You mean to Tsunade,” you say flatly.
His smile broadens, as if he’s pleased with your straightforwardness, “Yes.”
“I used some of it for my takeout last night,” you lie, “should I expect the cops this afternoon?”
“I’m just saying, you should be careful. Running that money through your business as a legitimate payment of some kind will be better for everyone.”
“I’m sorry I’m not as creative an accountant as you hoped.”
“Oh,” he says, turning to lean his back against the counter as you move to the door to flip the little handmade sign on it from closed to open, “I think you’re plenty creative, I’ve already told you that.”
You do have a really lovely eye for color.
You roll your eyes. “Are you going to hang around all day? Because I will put you to work if so.”
Kakashi drums his fingers against the counter. “Actually, I was hoping you could make a bouquet for me.”
You scowl at him, unconvinced, but when he doesn’t move, you relent, “Any specifications?”
“Something beautiful,” he says softly, “it’s for an old friend.”
You try to tamp down your irritation as you set about your work, choosing some of your most spectacular blooms to include just because you’re irritated and want to show off a little.
Soft pink peonies, tufts of brilliant blue forget-me-nots, crisp white lily of the valley. Kakashi watches patiently as you work, adding sprigs of eucalyptus and sage for a fresh, herbal scent and soft tones of green before wrapping the stems in elastic overlaid with plain brown twine.
“Do you want a vase?” you ask, finally glancing up at him.
He smiles softly and it catches you off guard, how open and honest the expression seems on his face.
“No,” he says, “this is fine.”
You ring up the total and he pays without question. When you try to withdraw your hand, though, he catches your wrist.
“What are—”
But before you can ask what he’s doing, Kakashi already has a pen in hand—one no doubt stolen from your office earlier—and is scribbling a phone number onto your palm.
“That’s my personal line,” he says, clicking the pen closed and setting it on the counter. “You should text me some time. It would be good practice."
He turns to leave, “See you soon, sweetheart.” You’re certain he leans into the word because he knows you dislike it.
A little flustered, and still annoyed by his actions, you stomp around the counter, clenching your fist around the number inked onto your skin. “I have a name, you know,” you growl irritably.
Kakashi turns, smiling. But it’s not his usual self-assured smirk. It’s something else, something softer; more genuine. “Oh, I know,” he says, leaning forward until his lips are directly next to your ear. “See you soon, Takiko.”
He’s out the door too fast for you to react, but it still takes you a full minute to breathe normally after the bell stops chiming in his wake. When you finally look at your palm, the numbers are a little smudged from your clammy grip, but still legible.
You save his contact in your phone before you wash your hands and descend to the basement to retrieve a box of twine, having used almost the last of your spool on Kakashi’s bouquet. You can hear the bell announce the arrival of a customer and you curse, sprinting up the stairs with the box tucked under one arm.
But when you walk back into the shop, already apologizing, “Sorry about that! Welcome to Root & Stem, what can I…”
You trail off because there’s no one there. Instead, the only indication anyone stopped in at all is a tall to-go cup of steaming coffee on the counter beside a single pink peony.
You know without question who left them, and the knowledge settles in your belly like a stone skipping over water—heavy, laced with frenetic excitement.
It escapes your recollection at the time that the peony stands for bravery, but that doesn’t mean the gesture carries any less weight.

I love how interactive you are with your followers! I saw in one of your answers that you would like to know our head cannons! I’ll start with the seemingly popular odd — in a pleasant way — KakaTsu ship. I have come across this ship in the past but I strayed far and wide from it because it didn’t intrigue me…. UNTIL now!
Your angsty hot-take was a wonderful insight on how you perceive them! And I definitely see Kakashi as a person who indulges in consensual pain in the bedroom because it’s hard for him to feel anything now. By the tender age of 13, he was already stripped off his parents, his best friends, his mentor. It’s hard to see the point of living after such a bleak start.
My personal take is that their dynamic is give-and-take. I can see Tsunade relinquishing her power and dominance for a night to someone she knows won’t mis-use the opportunity. Kakashi is her confidant and he doesn’t see her vulnerability as a sign of personal gain. So when he’s the one “dictating” the reins, he’s powerful and passionate but he also reads her facial expressions as his cue to stop or to slow down. If Kakashi wants to feel something, then for me, Tsunade wants to feel loved. Even if it’s a couple of minutes, even if it’s with her subordinate who can never love her like Dan, the feeling of being desired and to desire is a feeling she craves. And Kakashi helps quench that side of hers without judgement. When Tsunade is leading for the night, she often teases Kakashi over the limit until his reaction is visceral and until he loses himself in her arms. Because that’s what he wants from her — to feel, to be pulled back from his thoughts, and to be present.
I can see Kakashi preferring Tsunade to be on top of him because he’s got the perfect view 👀. Coincidentally, it’s Tsunade’s favourite position too because she knows she can make Kakashi undone in a matter of seconds when she bucks her hips down and rotates them in certain manner. And she loves seeing Kakashi try to prove her otherwise (his success rate is under 50%).
Also, they both give the best aftercare post-sex — tea, water, a hot shower, soft conversation while their limbs are intertwined in the moonlight. They make sure to check up on the other afterwards and that their needs are met sufficiently. Their intermission afterwards is to recalibrate their relationship for when they go back to Hokage and subordinate. While they keep their relationship (FWB) on the down-low, Shizune and Team Kakashi suspect something is different with them, but they don’t have any concrete evidence because KakaTsu aren’t outwardly physically intimate. Finally, while they have different sexual partners along the years, they often find themselves going back to each other — and that’s something unique to them.
I’ve rambled! So let me know your thoughts 🙂Also happy holidays!
You can't imagine how happy this ask made me🥺
I totally agree that Kakashi might be seeking feelings. He turned something off when he was younger to survive all the losses, but isnt able to turn it on again. And Tsunade is indeed someone who can help with this - she's mature, emphatic and has gone through something similar as well. So allowing being themselves when alone together is a very wholesome hc. <3
And her teasing him 💔 is want to read this so bad! And also how they discuss all the rumors and weird looks on them 🤤
Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

Updated Plot for my upcoming Charasuke x Menma series.
Part 1
Menma is going to turn evil on his own free will. Well, sort of? He’s going to go dark when a masked man kills his parents and younger siblings (he’s going to have had 4 siblings in this series.) This masked man wanted him cause’ of the 9 Tails sealed inside of him. His parents die protecting him and his siblings were just lambs to a slaughter.
This causes Menma to sort of turn a bit like Sasuke. He’s going to swear revenge on killing that monster who massacred his entire family right before his eyes. But, I’m still not sure if he’s going to be going to Orochimaru for power or joining The Akatsuki.
Charasuke/Sasuke, is his best friend and he’s totally different than canon Sasuke. (He’s carefree, lazy, soft/compassionate, naïve and a womanizer. He also still has his Dad, Mom and Itachi in this series. The massacre didn’t happen. Although, I might kill off his parents too for dramatic effect. I’m not sure, yet.)
When Menma leaves the village and goes either to Orochimaru or The Akatsuki. Sakura, tries to stop him. Because, if you’ve seen Road To Ninja movie/filler arc you know she loves Menma in this AU. So she tries to stop him. Menma is actually a lot crueler than canon Sasuke was and he doesn’t knock her out. He actually tries to kill her. Because, he’s been giving in to the darkness in his heart. But, a bunch of Jōnin hear the commotion and get there just in time to save Sakura. Menma fights off the Jōnin and kills them. (Some Jōnin are pretty weak from what I’ve seen and I think Menma could easily kill them. I mean, he does take after Minato in personality and skills. He’s a prodigy too. So yeah.)
After he kills them. He starts walking away from the Hidden Leaf village. Tsunade is quickly informed by ANBU of what happened. She tells Teams Kurenai, Guy, Asuma and Kakashi of what happened. She says that Menma is now a Rogue ninja and no longer has any connections with the Hidden Leaf. She forbids anyone from chasing after him. But, a cocky and teasing Charasuke tells her that that’s just what he’ll do. She forbids him and orders him to not go. Charasuke is seriously angry (a rare occurrence but, it happens) at this and goes back to his house.
Itachi who can see how much suffering this situation is causing his little brother. Because, he knows how precious Menma is to him. Well, he asks him, "Why don’t you just go? I’ll pretend I didn’t notice you sneaking out of the house." Charasuke smiles at his big brother and thanks him.
Then, he sneaks out and catches up to Menma. He tries to talk him out of running away. He promises him that he could persuade his Dad of working something out with the Uchiha Police Force. Maybe he could be put under house arrest or something? Menma just laughs at him and tells him that he isn’t going back. Because, he’s realized that worrying about other people makes you weak. His parents worried about him and where did that get them? They’re dead. They’re dead and never coming back. You should only worry about yourself. You should love only yourself. If you love only yourself. You won’t ever have to suffer the loss of others. He’ll never love again. He won’t ever have his heart broken. He lost his Mom, Dad, brothers and sisters. Charasuke tells him that he shouldn’t close his heart. It’s not what his family would’ve wanted. It’s like if he’s desecrating them. It’s like if their sacrifices were in vain. Menma gets furious at Charasuke’s words and asks him, "What could a pampered and spoiled brat like you possibly understand, huh? How could you possibly know what I’m feeling right now? You still have a Dad, Mom and brother! You’ve never lost anything in your pathetic life! How would you feel if someone just came out of the blue and killed all of them right in front of you? While you could do nothing to stop them and… how would you feel if you knew that they all died because of you?!" Charasuke hugs Menma and tries to comfort him with soothing words. But, this just irritates Menma and he punches him. He mocks Charasuke and tells him, "Maybe if you spent a little less time hitting on girls and a little more time training with Fugaku or Itachi you could actually force me to stay. But, you’re no match for me. What could the shame of the great and powerful Uchiha clan possibly do? You’ve always been a joke! You don’t like fighting and don’t like hurting people. Are you even a real Uchiha?" While it’s true that Charasuke may be an extremely compassionate person who avoids violence. He’s still an Uchiha and like every Uchiha. He’s extremely prideful about his lineage and superior visual prowess. So he gets really angry and uses his Sharingan. (I’ve read in Wikipedia and seen in video games that Charasuke has the same abilities as canon Sasuke. So he’s got the Sharingan.) to actually fight Menma. He tells him, "Living in a constant cycle of hate. That’s no way to live, Menma. I’ll stop you. Even if I have to put you under a genjutsu and drag you back to the village if I must!"
The two have their fight and Charasuke proves to be a rather tough opponent. Menma thought he was a weakling. But, he guesses he must have been training more than usual. But, when Charasuke and Menma deliver their final attacks. Rasengan VS Chidori. Charasuke doesn’t have the heart to go through with it and stops the chidori (let’s say it’s actually possible). But, Menma doesn’t stop the Rasengan and hurts him pretty badly. (Of course, he doesn’t kill him!)
Menma (who has always had feelings for Charasuke. But, he’s always tried to ignore them.) looks at Charasuke’s unconscious body one last time before he smiles sadly at him and tells him. "I’m sorry. But, if I stayed with you. I wouldn’t be able to keep the promise I made to myself of not letting anyone into my heart ever again. Goodbye, my idiot."
Menma’s leaving changes Charasuke drastically! No, he doesn’t go evil like his counterpart. He just gives up on being a womanizer. He’s got no time for girls. He’s too busy obsessing over how he’s going to get his "best friend" back. So he’s now become rather dedicated in his training and is always asking his Dad, Shisui and Itachi to train him. Because, he’s obsessed with getting stronger and bringing back Menma. He wants to be a challenge worthy of him. He’s also no longer that bright or cheerful. He’s mostly sad and quiet. He’s also become a bit of an idealist who believes, on breaking Menma’s cycle of hatred. "I’ll create a world with no hatred, no violence, no wars. I’ll create a world of only peace and love. A world where you’ll learn to be happy again. No matter what it costs me."

“I do hate to do this to you, but you’re the best choice. There’s not an Inuzuka available who has the security clearance necessary, which makes you the only ninken-user I can assign this to.”
Kakashi nodded and shrugged, brushing off the unspoken apology. “I understand, it’s no issue.”
Tsunade pursed her lips into a thin line, nodding solemnly. “If it wasn’t so time-sensitive, I’d put someone else on it, I swear.” She tucked a loose strand of her silvery blond hair behind her ear and shuffled the papers on her desk, bringing a personnel file to the top. “And to accompany you… Again, I’m really sorry, but she’s the only one who makes sense. She was in the area most recently out of all available jonin and her weapons expertise makes her the best candidate to accompany you.”
His eyebrows dipped together in mild confusion. He would have requested this partner if she hadn’t been assigned—he agreed fully that they would make the best team for this recovery mission. Shaking it off, he nodded again. “Sounds great, Lady Fifth. Anything else?”
Tsunade let out a breath she had been half holding and leaned back in her chair. Tonton gave a relieved squeak and Shizune pulled her closer to her chest. The Hokage dragged her hands across her eyes, then leaned forward on her elbows.
“Glad you’re taking this so well. I thought you’d at least argue about your fiancé going with you, if not objecting to being sent on a mission right now at all.”
Kakashi jerked his head backwards and to the side, scanning over the Sannin with his single vibrant, gray eye. “I’m sorry if I gave you the impression I like to argue with superiors, Tsunade-sama. That’s really more Naruto’s thing.” She snorted, and he took it as a good sign. “When would you like us to head out? Thirty minutes?”
Immediately, Tsunade shot him down. “She needs a medic to look her over before she can go into the field. I’m happy to do it myself. Her training with her team ends at noon, right?” She glanced at the clock, then gestured to Shizune. “Send Kotetsu or Izumo to pull her, we can’t wait that long.” With a quick nod, she ducked out of the room. “Meanwhile, you can go pack bags for you both. Be sure to grab her med pack, I’ll probably need to give her a bonus prescription or two for the journey.”
At this point, Kakahi’s confusion could no longer be dismissed. Why would his fiancé need extra medication for a mission? He had just seen you when you left to meet your team of genin, and you hadn’t mentioned anything. Maybe the stomach bug you had had a few weeks ago had been worse than you let on?
“Sorry, prescriptions? Are we facing potential poisoning?” He tried, looking for an explanation.
Tsunade shook her head firmly. “Anything is possible, but I’m not concerned about it.” She ran her hand backward through her hair, shaking it gently toward the ends and letting it fall out of the way. “More concerned with making sure she’s getting the correct nutrients. I’ve been working on the nutritional value of shinobi rations, but it’s hard to find something that’s shelf stable, lightweight, and compact without just being food pills.”
Kakashi agreed, a debate he had heard on nearly every long term mission. “So you’ll give us both supplements, fair. Should we do my physical now while we wait on my fiancé to arrive?” He relished the words in his mouth, the phrase “my fiancé” almost a dream to him, even still.
She gave a bemused chuckle, glancing the scarecrow of a man up and down. “Why, you have some kind of boo-boo you need me to kiss?” Tsunade returned to the paperwork on her desk, shuffling it again and pulling the shinobi copy of the mission details file out, holding it out to him. “I trust you to get whatever nutrients you need after all these years of life, Bakashi,” she teased.
He didn’t move to take the file. “What’s going on?” he demanded, as respectfully as absolutely necessary. “What’s going on that she needs a medical check and extra medication to travel on a mission? Why did you think I would object to being paired with her? It’s not our first mission together, not even since we got engaged. What am I forgetting?”
Tsunade didn’t react to his interrogation, continuing to organize paperwork and leaning down to pull open a drawer in her desk, sliding his and your personnel files inside. “The fetus, maybe?” She offered, waving a hand like it was obvious.
The what?
For a moment, Tsunade could almost hear the cogs grinding in the shinobi’s head. You passing him every drink that had been pushed on you in the last few weeks, the stomach bug that he had never caught, and the uptick in morning meetings you had.
Then the cogs were brought to a halt, and the whole world froze. The blood running through his body was ice cold, and he felt his fingertips and forehead tingling. Were you really pregnant?
Was he, Kami forbid, going to be a father?
Tsunade swore, knowing she shouldn’t have said anything violating medical confidentiality, but with the pregnancy already being in the second trimester, she had no idea that you hadn’t told Kakashi yet. “Listen, Kakashi… just sit down, okay?” She looked around, swearing again at the reminder that this damn office had no chairs outside of the one she occupied.
She jumped up, crossing over to Kakashi and pushing him forward into the chair behind the desk. “Breathe, Kakashi, come on.” She shook him gently, then lightly slapped his cheek. “Come on, soldier. You’re Kakashi of the Sharingan, master of a thousand jutsu, pull it together.”
He flatly refused.
The door to the Hokage’s office opened, Shizune and Tonton leading you in. You took a moment to take in the scene of your fiancé hyperventilating behind the desk, the Hokage herself swearing and trying to get him to make eye contact and pull air into his lungs. Then he saw you, and he paused, fear in his eyes.
“Is it true—I mean, are you—love, are you pregnant?” He choked out.
Your hand flew to your mouth as if to put the secret back inside. You knew you’d have to tell him eventually, but you had wanted the moment to be right and he had been so busy with his missions lately. He didn’t know it yet, but you had rented a room at a nearby onsen for next weekend, making sure to get a room with a private bath and windows high enough that no onlookers could see inside so that he could comfortably remove his mask. That would’ve been the way you preferred he find out, when rather than dessert, you slid the sonogram across the table after dinner. Instead, you nodded.
“Yes, my love,” you whispered. “I’m pregnant.” Instinctively, your hand rested over the part of your stomach that had begun showing this last week.
He seemed to melt into chair. “Kami… we’re going to be parents?”
You nodded, a small laugh breaking from your chest. “Yes, Kakashi, that’s the plan.”
Slowly, he gathered himself, standing up and delicately walking around the desk to the doorway where you remained. “I… You want this?” He sniffed hard, blinking twice and taking your hands. “You want to raise a child with me? This child?”
You tilted your head to the side, feeling hot tears sting your eyes. You knew he had issues with his self worth, and that would be something you would focus on for the next few months so he’d be ready for your child.
“Of course, ‘Kashi. There’s no one I trust more, no one I think would make a better father. I can’t imagine doing this with anyone else, and I’m thrilled that I get to do it with you.”
His wiry frame jolted as though he’d been shocked, and the threw himself into your arms, allowing his fears and shock to leave him through tears. Tsunade and Shizune averted their eyes, doing what they could to preserve your privacy. Tonton oinked in solidarity. After a couple of moments, he stood again, wiping dry the parts of his face not covered by salty, wet fabric. He then hooked a finger into the mask at the side of his nose, yanked it down, and brought you into a deep kiss, warm hands wrapping around you and pulling you close.
After the surprise, you let yourself dissolve into him, allowing yourself to be swept into his emotional display. He pulled his face back after a few beats and beamed, smiling as widely as you could remember seeing him grin. Then his mouth was back on yours, this time for just a second, then a firm kiss to your forehead before he secured the mask again. Turning to face the Hokage, he wrapped his arm around your back and held you close.
“Tsunade-sama, all due respect, can Pakkun handle this? I’ll send him with anyone you’d like. Naruto, even, I don’t think he’s doing anything tonight. I can send the whole pack. I can brief Gai, or Tenzo, anyone? And if you need a weapons expert, I’m sure Tenten is more than qualified.” You giggled, watching your fiancé ramble to the leader of the village. “It’s just, I’m going to be a father, and she’s pregnant with our child, and I’ve gotta say, I don’t think we’re going on any missions for the next, say, 18 years? Well, maybe some D ranks. We’ll see.”
As Tsunade opened her mouth, he cut her off with a pointed, “How’s the progress on the Konoha Orphanage coming along? They prepared for one more? Cause I’m not letting anything happen to either of us, for this child’s sake.”
Tsunade glared, but was startled out of the shouting match she was gearing up for by Shizune chuckling. Betrayed, she turned to her companion.
“I mean, this is the reaction you anticipated him having, Lady Fifth,” she giggled.
She slammed a fist on the desk, although with an intense amount of restraint given that the surface was not even dented. Finally, she looked up with a glint in her eye.
“I think Hana Inuzuka gets back this evening. I can give her twelve hours to rest and then she and Tenten, along with Gai, can probably handle it. This time.”
Kakashi was already on his way out the door, pulling you behind him in a firmly clasped hand, before she had finished. He called out a thanks over your shoulder as you left. Together, you giggled as you entered the streets of Konoha.
Your fiancé spun in circles, laughing freely and spreading his arms out. “We’re starting a family!” he shouted to the sky. You knew you would both continue to take missions with this child, and that was a conversation for another time. For now, though, you were content to spend eternity watching the love of your life giddily relish in this moment.

Could I have headcanons for Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke sharing a darling?
This was actually part of a post I made a while ago. It was about sharing a darling pairs in which I was personally interested. Also, since I did already a Sakura and Naruto post and a modern reader post, I tried to summon the backstory shorter up and layed my focus on the dynamic of the relationship.
Tw: Yandere themes, possessiveness, obsessiveness, delusions, unhealthy relationship, unhealthy mindset, vicious behavior, harsh behavior, killing, manipulating, kidnapping
Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura sharing a darling
🍜💙🌸I can see you as a fellow classmate back in the academy days with Naruto having already a huge crush on you back then and going on small little dates with you. When the teams were made, he was definitely upset that he wasn’t part of your team, jealous of the classmates who were. With Sakura you developed a good friendship during these days since Naruto brought you over as often as possible since he wanted to introduce you to his new friends. She was just thankful that Naruto had someone, he could always count on. Sasuke was most likely annoyed by you at first because that blonde over there never stopped talking about you. I feel like that if you would excel in a special area, ninjutsu for example or would be a good strategist, he might be impressed. But he would definitely need to spend a lot of time with you. You might have helped him with new techniques for which he acknowledged you.
🍜💙🌸You could say that this was somewhat the start of it all, Naruto and Sasuke both being in love with you. It made the relationship a bit more complicated to say the least, both often arguing when it came to you. A lot of snarky and mean comments from Sasuke, poking fun at Naruto and saying he wouldn’t be strong enough and Naruto throwing childish tantrums. Sakura, knowing that both of them liked you, was of course saddened due to her crush on Sasuke back then. But she also knew that you couldn’t do anything about it and felt almost sorry for you, these two were much to take after all.
🍜💙🌸It came to the final showdown between Sasuke and Naruto after he had decided to leave the village, wanting to get stronger and feeling hatred for Naruto because that guy had gotten so strong and monopolized your time. It led to a much more intense fight between those two, Sasuke more aggressive because of all the anger inside of him which led him to yelling at Naruto that one day he would get you and then you would be his. Naruto on the other hand got terrified when hearing this, not willing to let you anywhere near Orochimaru and Sasuke, who was clearly not thinking, which also led him to pushing harder.
🍜💙🌸He was scared when he had to leave you alone, but also knew that this was a necessary step to get stronger. He made Tsunade, Sakura, Kakashi and everyone of his friends promise that they would protect you. He knew Sasuke was lurking somewhere outside there, waiting for his chance.
🍜💙🌸It was during this time that Sakura fell for you, spending everyday with you that at one point Tsunade just decided to train both of you together since you were always there. She just realized that you had been there for her all the time, always supported her and acted as the shoulder to cry on when she had needed one. She felt conflicted about this, knowing that Naruto and you were an unofficial couple which led her to some mood swings. She was either on cloud nine or somewhere deep underground.
🍜💙🌸When Naruto came back, she informed him about what had happened. He was at first a bit more iffy about how to feel, but him and Sakura shared a great trust after all, leading to both of them agreeing to share whilst also wanting to safe their teammate. Sasuke on the other hand had spent years training with Orochimaru and that guy had somehow found out about his pupil’s little obsession with you, daring to sometimes ask him about you which led to Sasuke aggressively reacting. Even the thought of Orochimaru anywhere near you was disgusting.
🍜💙🌸After he went rogue, he had originally planned to take you after defeating Itachi. You could have been in the search troupe together with Naruto, Sakura and all the others. Tsunade and Kakashi were aware that Sasuke was after you, so they most likely either made you pair up with Naruto or Sakura at that time. If Sasuke found out or not depends on whether he sensed you or not. If he did, there’s a chance he really went after you, only to be interrupted by all the other people searching for him which was quite frustrating. You were so close and he still couldn’t grab you.
🍜💙🌸He didn’t know about Sakura yet, Tobi probably told him about it, using it as a manipulation to make him distrust the village even more and bring him to joining the Akatsuki. And that made Sasuke snap. As if it wouldn’t have been enough that this blonde moron had fallen for you, Sakura too?! Was that guy kidding him! And when he found out that those two were even sharing, he honestly was irritated. The concept of sharing the person you love wasn’t exactly well known to him.
🍜💙🌸It was most likely after the war that those three finally came to the terms of sharing with each other. Of course Sasuke needed a lot of time to get convinced. It was most likely Sakura and maybe even the darling who suggested it. Naruto wasn’t exactly all that happy with it. He was a jealous boy after all and he knew that Sasuke wasn’t exactly...the nicest person. He was dubious about this whole thing and the only reason why he was willing to give it a shot in the first place was because Sasuke was his friend. And as a worshipper he refused to let you get yelled at. And Sasuke was conflicted about this. Sharing really isn’t his strength and whilst he did saw them as his teammates again, he was still pretty selfish about you. He shouldn’t have to share you with someone else. But he knew too well that Sakura and Naruto wouldn’t let you go. Neither would he. He needed most likely help and comfort from the darling during this time so he would come to the terms of sharing.
🍜💙🌸It is truly a thing to witness in here. Because whilst Sakura and Naruto worked together so well because they share a lot of Yandere types and has the same point of view about how to treat and share you, not to mention the same trust, Sasuke isn’t like those two. He’s more of a bastard who can lash out easily when the wrong buttons are pushed and also yell at his darling for it.
🍜💙🌸It’s also worth mentioning that whilst Naruto and Sakura do see Sasuke as their friend and teammate and trust him, they always hoped for him to come back, when it comes to their darling, both of them are a bit more distrusting and more on edge. They know Sasuke’s mood swings and whilst he definitely is a bit more nicer to you, he can just as well spit out some hurtful words. And that’s definitely anything, but fine with Naruto and Sakura.
🍜💙🌸The dynamic between Naruto and Sasuke could be described as shaky. They are literally back to how they used to act to each other when they were younger. That means Sasuke mocking his friend whilst Naruto throws childish tantrums. But both of them changed after all so it can go from just acting like children and teasing and yelling at each other quickly to actually throwing hands over you. And in this case Sakura and the s/o will have to step in so they don’t try to kill each other again. And whilst Sakura definitely always tries to solve this peacefully, the moment she loses her temper too or notices that both of them scare you with their behavior, she definitely isn’t above punching them and yelling at them to stop their stupid behavior since they scare you with it.
🍜💙🌸The dynamic between Sakura and Sasuke might be a bit more awkward given the fact that Sakura used to have a crush on Sasuke and he knows that too. But at least those two are a bit more polite with each other, most likely because most of the times she knows not to push his buttons and tries in general to always talk with them if they have a problem with each other. If we go from cannon logic and assume that both of them should still develop romantic feelings for each other later on, this would of course change a few things. Sasuke would just have an easier time sharing with someone if he loved that person as well. It would still be pretty turbulent though.
🍜💙🌸Time has to be developed carefully because once again, the dynamic with Sakura and Naruto might be great, but Sasuke doesn’t add up to it. Sakura and Naruto are used to sharing their darling and definitely spend a lot of time with them together. Whilst Naruto does need a bit more time alone with their darling than Sakura does, they managed to schedule the time. But with Sasuke in the picture things changed quite a bit. Sasuke is more of a loner and since he’s possessive, he needs a lot more time with his darling in comparison to many others. Another thing is that he needs the calmness and Naruto and Sakura tend to be a bit too loud for his taste. Not only that, but all three of them together with their darling can lead to a quick argument between Naruto and Sasuke and that’s when it really gets noisy.
🍜Naruto would grow most likely more clingy due to constantly being teased and poked fun at by Sasuke. From the three he is definitely the one who would smother you more than Sasuke. He isn’t exactly happy with having to share with the black-haired boy since Sasuke goes sometimes a bit too harsh on you. There is also this old competition from his younger days between him and Sasuke which still influences the way those two act with each other. He’s also a bit more protective over you than he usually would be, not wanting you to endure any of Sasuke’s mood swings alone. If he should find out that you always get scared when him and Sasuke are in another shouting session which is about to reach it’s climax, he would feel totally horrible afterwards, apologizing whilst suffocating you in even more affection. He would try afterwards to prevent himself from getting angered too much by Sasuke for your sake which isn’t very easy.
💙Sasuke is somewhat the more unpleasant counterpart of Sakura and Naruto. He isn’t the nicest person and he knows that too. He tends to often get all pent-up due to constantly throwing fits with Naruto. It makes him a bit more trigger-happy and so it definitely happens once in a while that he has to let his frustrations out, sometimes even on you. He does feel bad afterwards since he understands that this isn’t completely your fault. It’s just hard for him to endure Sakura and Naruto, who are very overbearing to say the least. He needs time alone with you to connect properly and that is hard with the other two constantly around. He isn’t exactly all that willing to make things up with Naruto since he possesses a huge amount of Uchiha pride. Sakura would honestly have to drag him by the collar to apologize to you and to make both of them apologize to each other.
🌸Sakura is the voice of reasoning between those two. She’s honestly the only reason they didn’t lose their other arm as well. She’s more reasonable with everything and acts somewhat as a messenger between those two since their pride often keeps them from talking to each other like a grownup does. She often talks with both of them as polite as she can, figures out the problems and talks to the other one, listening to his problems and trying to make him help to understand the point of view from the other guy a bit better. She’ll also there to comfort you when you had to witness yet another fight between those two. Whilst she is someone who tries to solve things in a non-violent way, she tends to lose her temper too, grabbing both of them by their collars and shaking them whilst shouting at them to stop acting like complete idiots. Does anyone of those want to make you feel scared of them? Good grief.
🍜💙🌸This will never be a picture-perfect relationship, not with Sasuke in here. It will get overtime better though since Naruto and Sasuke will somewhat learn to co-exist next to each other and share with each other which will have you and Sakura let a sigh of relief out. The only thing they have to work on now is somehow helping Naruto and Sasuke to not get a bit too messy. Sakura is due to being a medic not that willing to kill unless something serious happened. Naruto possesses a few boundaries, but it is still too easy to set him off. And Sasuke definitely earns the first place. He’s paranoid, even more since he has to share his darling already and doesn’t want any other trailing after them.
🍜💙🌸It also makes him want to isolate his darling a bit more which is not okay with the other two. Sasuke isn’t really comfortable with with going outside with his darling, he is more on edge, especially when in public. He doesn’t have anything against a short walk outside in nature, but when he has to go under humans he tends to keep his darling closer to him. This isn’t that terrible of a case with Naruto and Sakura. They are just on the jealous side, but not that paranoid like Sasuke is. In short, there will always be things that will require long discussions and fights until for the time being a solution is found.

primrose (an itaxsaku fic)
This was for a gift exchange in an itasaku server i was in...my prompt was “That doesn’t mean what you think it means.” here’s hoping that whoever’s prompt i got will see this (sorry it’s late i got caught up with taking summer classes)
Men were dense.
Uchiha men unbelievably so. Or at least that's what she thought at first.
So when Sakura received her first bouquet of flowers from Itachi Uchiha, a beautiful mixture of blue salvias, pansies, pink camellias with a single creamy white lily in the middle of it, for her official graduation as Tsunade's apprentice, she smiled and blushed while taking it but ultimately thought nothing of it. After all men were strange and Itachi Uchiha was perhaps the strangest of them all.
The second time Sakura received flowers from Itachi Uchiha, if you could even consider them flowers, just so happened to be after a particularly hard death. She was 6 years old. Eyes as clear and unique as the twilight sky they reminded her of...at least when they weren't darkened to a deep purple with pain. Lady Tsunade tried to warn her. There were just some things medical chakra (which speeds up cell division to produce new healthy cells) couldn't heal. She should have listened. So when there were no more sweet smiles, no more ringing laughter, no more soft pleas for “Pleeeeease just one more story and I promise i'll go to sleep Sakura Onee-chan pretty pretty please with frosting on top”, Sakura was an emotionally devastated wreck (it came with wearing your heart on your sleeve). So when she saw the small aloe vera plant sitting so innocently on her window sill the next morning with his perfect scrawling handwriting on an even smaller card, she got angry. Was he mocking her? Giving her a plant that promoted healing, with an angry grief stricken cry the aloe had a new home against her wall. But, just like her, the next day the aloe was back in her window in it's small broken pot now glued back together with a small thank you written in messy doctor's script. That afternoon Tillian (or Tilli as Naruto and Ino would come to know her) gained a window buddy a golden pothos by the name of Balthazar (courtesy of Kakashi-sensei. It was cute in a weird sort of way).
These in her opinion strange but thoughtful and hey what girl didn't like to receive flowers every now and then occurrences continued to happen for a while. A daffodil here, an iris there whether it was a special occasion or not. Most of the time they were left on her doorstep or windowsill with just his name and no explanation. And never a bouquet, not since that first time, just a single flower in a small vase or with a cute ribbon tied around it.
The first time he actually spoke to her was on her 21st birthday. Because she had an early shift the next day and totally NOT because a certain ramen obsessed ninja begged her and threatened to tell a certain Ino-pig that she wanted a big blow out party until she gave in she found herself at a small celebration at Ichiraku. Naruto was going on about he and Sasuke's latest mission which ended up with Sasuke waist deep in muck and him dangling upside down from above while being attacked by the migratory birds they were sent to capture and relocate. Naruto was wildly and animatedly getting to the best part (his words and not her own), evidently one of the male birds took a liking to the back of Sasuke's head a little too much his resulting shudder and grumbled “It wasn't THAT funny dobe” made it all the funnier though she'd never say that out loud when they were interrupted by Itachi's soft and smooth “Sakura-San”. Somewhat surprised she smiled and returned his greeting. “Itachi-San. What brings you by?” Both Sasuke and Naruto seemed to be taken aback by Itachi's soft smile shot her way though she really had no idea why. Sure he was a little bit emotionally repressed but no more so than Sai.
If Itachi was uncomfortable with the sudden attention he was getting from Sasuke and Naruto he didn't show it. “I heard from a little black birdie that I might find you here for your birthday.”
Sakura hummed not surprised at all at that bit of information though she did make a mental note to put said curly-haired black birdie on bedpan duty for a week. Shisui may be an Uchiha in name but he was just about as gossipy as some of the younger nurses in the hospital and last thing she needed was rumors being started. Still she nodded to Itachi “Yeah I didn't want anything big so I decided to have dinner with the boys.”
Itachi nodded to them as if seeing them for the first time “Ototo, Naruto-kun... I don't mean to intrude I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday and to give you these.”
Sakura gently took the small bouquet he held out to her. “It's beautiful...thank you Itachi-san”. Much smaller than the first this one contained only a few simple flowers. A few magenta zinnias, a few gardenias and a red carnation framed by some smilax vines.
Itachi dipped his head “Ah. I will take my leave then. Enjoy your meal Sakura-san. Ototo, Naruto-kun.” Just as quickly as he appeared he was gone.
Sighing softly Sakura could feel their stares at the back of her head effectively ruining the mood. “What?” she turned to her two brothers in arms.
“What was that about??” Naruto pointed story forgotten.
“Ah...are you and my brother dating?” If it were anyone but Sasuke she would swear there was a hint of jelousy in his voice...then again it was Itachi he was asking about so it probably was.
Shrugging Sakura looked at the two of them “No we're not dating. He was just being nice it is my birthday after all.” Not that she should have to explain herself to them but really they were reading too much into a kind gesture. At their disbelieving looks she frowned “Look...Naruto remember last year when Itachi-san got you those special kunai for your birthday? And don't even get me started on how he practically buys out every tomato in the village for Sasuke's. Presents are expected to be given for your birthday. He's just being nice. Nothing more.”
More time passed and things continued on in the same manner. Sakura realized that soon she would need to start drying out and preserving her flowers because she was beginning to run out of room and even though it only used the most minimal amount of chakra to keep them fresh and beautiful eventually even that wears on you. Vowing to herself that after her shift she'd stop by the Yamanaka flower shop to grab a flower scrap book it would soon be forgotten for now. It would also lead to the first time in a few months that Sakura wouldn't receive flowers for a while. For when she reached her office one of the newly graduated nurses was waiting for her at her office door. His name was Tsukishima Kei, only a few years younger than her he was already well on his way to becoming head nurse. With his short messy blonde hair, honey colored brown eyes, and physic that despite not being a shinobi shows that he takes time to keep in shape it was really no wonder he was popular among the female patients however, he was surprisingly well liked with the kids. He could almost rival Shisui in the looks department though unlike Shisui his bedside manner could use some work. Nodding in greeting to him Sakura let him into her office after he asked to speak with her for a moment. Fifteen minutes later Tsukishima left her office and Sakura found herself with a date that Saturday evening. Ino was positively excited although Sakura got the distinct air of disappointment once she told Ino who it was she was going out with. But Ino didn't tell so she didn't ask. Sakura also vaguely wondered why Ino didn't comment on the bounty of flowers dotting her apartment everywhere... with the way she absolutely refused to let Sakura pick out her own clothes or do her own hair. But she had to admit when Ino finished she looked absolutely radiant. Tsukishima thought so too earning him a pretty blush as she looped her arm through his with a wave to Ino not to wait up. She never even noticed Ino's frown or the purple aster and another blue salvia sitting by her doorstep, carefully brought in by Ino upon her leaving. She did notice however a few weeks into dating Tsukki at his insistence she found it kinda cute that he wanted her to call him by the same nickname he best friend did... that the flowers had stopped. It made her feel weird and not in a good way. Did Itachi somehow know they were dating? And why did it matter so much? A week later much to her relief, perhaps with the uptick of missions he didn't have time to leave her any Sakura found a small bundle of yellow flowers on her desk. A yellow carnation, a yellow hyacintha, a marigold, and a yellow rose lay neatly on her desk tied up in a yellow ribbon. Smiling fondly albeit a little confused that they weren't in a vase like usual she pulled out a beaker and filled it with water for the flowers and placed them on the corner of her desk. Two months into dating Tsukki they decided mutually to break it off. While they found that they challenged each other intellectually they both agreed that that certain romantic spark just wasn't there. Sakura also realized that deep down some part of her was almost happy at the turn of events because she hadn't received any more flowers from Itachi since the yellow ones and she was 90% sure he knew she was dating someone despite she and Tsukki's efforts to keep it secret. It was weird how the thought of not getting more flowers from him, despite them rarely talking or seeing each other bothered her more than breaking up with Tsukki. It also didn't hurt that she noticed the longing glances that he shared with the new doctor, she believed his name was Tetsuro Kuroo and even teased him about them laughing at Tsukki's sputtering blush. It wasn't until Ino decided to visit one afternoon for lunch that Sakura realized that there might indeed be something to the flowers she had been receiving. It was a few days after her breakup honestly she never knew how Ino found out these things about her personal life so fast and Sakura agreed under the condition that they had lunch in her office because she was on duty today and on call for the next few days to which Ino readily agreed. As usual for their lunch dates they talked about their days what they had been doing since last seeing each other to her surprise Ino had started a tentative relationship with Sai of all people. Naturally talking about her own budding relationship Ino asked her friend about her own to which Sakura explained about she and Tsukki's mutual break up. And while she didn't seem too upset about it Ino still felt the need reply because at this rate the biggest fish was likely to swim away.
“Cheer up forehead. You know how that old cliche saying goes there are plenty of other fish in the sea.” She gauged her friend's reaction.
Sakura hummed not committally into her food “I don't know pig. The general consensus has not been in my favor. Aside from Tsukki nobody has shown any interest in me.”
Ino could have.... wanted to slap her forehead. She knew Sakura could be a bit stubborn...still watching her friend closely she wondered if Sakura even knew with a mental sigh and eye roll (really and she though men were difficult but this also was Sakura she was talking about) “Those flowers on your desk seem to suggest otherwise.” she said dryly with a wave to the still living bundle.
Sakura looked up from her food with a raised eyebrow. “What are you talking about pig?” Those are just flowers....arn't they?
Ino did sigh out loud this time leave it to Sakura to forget the first thing they learned in kunoichi class. “If you don't know I'm not going to tell you.” She stood and grabbed her things but was sastified when Sakura got that look that she got when trying to puzzle something out. “Tell you what. Because I'm such an awesome friend...” she flipped her long hair behind her back earning an eyeroll from Sakura “...stop by the shop after your shift and I'll give you a hint. And bring those with you.” She nodded at the yellow flowers on her way out.
Sakura sighed as she settled into her couch notebook and scrap book in one hand, the book Ino let her borrow the night before “The Kunoichi's Kado” and a fresh hot cup of tea ready to do what she was best known for...research. She supposed if Ino went through all of this trouble she could at least give it a try though she was fairly confident that nothing would come of this. Especially after finding a new set of flowers on her windowsill this morning, a clovenlip toadflax, a moss rosebud and a spider flower. At least that had been her mindset when she started this little project hours earlier. But...she couldn't deny the evidence right in front of her and maybe realized it a lot sooner if she had continued on with her kunoichi classes.
Blue salvia - I think of you
pansy – love and admiration
iris - a message
pink camellia – longing for you
white lily – purity
aloe vera – grief He was grieving with her she realized looking over to Tillie
golden pothos – perseverance
daffodil - you're the only one
magenta zinnias – lasting affection
gardenia – secret love
red carnation – admiration, my heart aches for you
smilax – loveliness
purple aster – kindness, gentleness, wisedom
yellow carnation – jealousy
yellow hyacintha – jealousy
marigold – jealousy
yellow rose – jealousy
Sakura sighed at this though she supposed she couldn't blame him. She'd be jealous if she saw her crush going out with someone else as well. That also explained the lack of flowers.
Clovenlip toadflax – please notice my feelings for you
moss rosebud – confession of love
spider flower – elope with me hopefully he meant go out with him Sakura wasn't sure if she was ready for marrage just yet.
All this time Itachi had been plainely or not so plainely stating his feelings for her and she never realized. Though in a way it made sense not being able to express himself outwardly he expressed himself in the only way he really knew how. And she never noticed. She had to go see him right away. She had to know. Had to let him know.
Sasuke raised an eyebrow at his pink haired teammate who currently was huffing like she had sprinted across the village which is exactly what she did she needed to train more with her boys if she's this winded from a little sprint.
“S...Sasuke is Itachi home? I need to talk to him.”
Sasuke's eyebrow rose even higher “Hn... he just left for a mission with his team about 10 minutes ago. His team moves pretty fast but if you hurry you might be able to catch him.” Sakuke watched as her whole body seem to deflate meaning she likely wasn't going to go after him. Especially when he saw her worrying her lip with indecision “Look...his team is fast and effiecent. He should be gone for maybe three days. If that long. You could always just tell him when he gets back.” He leaned aganst the doorway still watching her.
“Y...yeah you're right. I wouldn't want him to not be focused on the mission. And I just might need a little more time to think myself.”
“Let me guess. You found something out and made a rash decision?” Sasuke smirked.
Sakura narrowed her eyes “How long?”
“Since your birthday for sure.”
“And you didn't say anything?” she asked incredulously.
Again Sasuke shrugged “Wasn't my place.”
“Ass...” Sakura muttered hating to admit that he was right. No matter how frustrating it was knowing that she wouldn't be getting any answers rigtht away. But perhase it was for the best. A relationship with Uchiha Itachi wasn't something she could or should just jump into. “And you're ok with this?”
“At least I'm a good looking one.” Sasuke retorted earning himself an eye roll and a punch to the shoulder. “Besides. I'd rather it be you than any of his fangirls.”
Something wasn't right. Sakura could feel it like a second skin clinging to her rousing her from her sleep long before the Anbu arrived at her window. Call it a 7th sense if you will that medics tended to develop. She was already half way dressed when she heard the familiar tapping at her window.
“The Hokage requires your assistance. Several recon teams have come in severely injured and in critical condition.”
Grabbing several soilder pills for herself no doubt in her mind she'd need them tonight they were both gone in a flash. What greeted Sakura was nothing short of complete chaos. Rolling her sleeves up she dived into the fray. Nobody would be dying tonight if she could help it.
Beep...
Beep....
Beep.......
Itachi groaned blindly reaching out to turn off that incessant beeping from his alarm. His entire body was sore all over and all he wanted to do was roll over and go back to sleep. His brow furrowed as his brain struggled to connect the dots. there shouldn't be an alarm clock going off he should still be out in the field....His eyes shot open and he sat up a little too quickly causing the world of sterile white around him to swim. Just how long was he out? He looked around the room once his vision cleared at least he was in a Konoha hospital which means he and his team had made it back...or close enough for someone to find them and bring them back. Laying back against his pillows he turned his head intending to get some more rest before he was undoubtedly bombarded with friends, family and the Hokage once they all knew he was awake when he saw evidence of someone already having visited. He chuckled softly to himself and closed his eyes. On the night stand was a black and red vase....it's contents a jonquil, a white jasmine and a single sakura branch. Returned affections and willingness respectively the thought of Sakura was willing to give them a try filled him with a nervous sort of warmth as he sank back into the bed tiredness once again over taking him. It took a while, and admittedly he was worried but it seems that in the end he shouldn't have.

Like your fics! Question i came for joker and wonder why sakura? i dont get the buzz for her. shes a obsessed sasuke fangirl so she wouldnt chose joker of him right? and i watched ns and she's not at all that. idt he would go for her either. there's harley that fits better. please dont take this offensively im just curious
This has been sitting in my ask box for a bit (I’m lazy... sorry!) and wasn’t sure how to answer it. So, first... Thank you for liking my stories! Second... @radita328 reminded me of all the reasons I like Sakura so much and chose her as my lead female character in all my stories. I try not to take anything offensively and have been asked this multiple times since I started writing for this ship.
This might be a good way to explain it... And if I get questions like this again (which I undoubtedly will), it’s already been thoroughly answered.
Sakura was quite insecure as a child, and the other brats often bullied her. For a while, she silently endured it and tried to ignore the comments on her appearance. It wasn’t until her friendship with Ino and crush on Sasuke that she really started to bloom and find her confidence. Sometimes we need an outside source to see ourselves in a different light or find what’s inside. I’ve debated whether it’s okay for a person to try improving for themselves or someone else. To me, it doesn’t matter. The results and finding that inner-strength is important. Sometimes it takes an outside influence or another perspective to bring out the best version of a person, and that’s the case with Sakura and myself. Those with a self-deprecating mindset rarely see what others do.
Sakura’s infatuation with Sasuke temporarily ruined her relationship with Ino (we all make mistakes) and she became obsessed with perfecting her appearance based on rumors of what girls think he likes. Extreme dieting (even at the expense of her training), growing her hair out, fussing with everything. This is something many do in hopes of attracting their crush, especially teenage girls. During the Chunin Exams, she realized that spending so much time on her looks instead of training was a waste The boy she wanted to impress couldn’t care less about it and she put her teammates in danger by not focusing on what’s important. This arc shows the beginning of her character development. To save Naruto and Sasuke, she used her body as a shield and cut off her ‘beloved’ hair. After being beaten to a pulp, she still refused to give up, knowing it might end in death.
Later on, Team 7 is split up as her teammates are taken to be trained, leaving her behind. Kakashi took Sasuke and Jiraiya with Naruto. Her own sensei and everyone else walked away, despite being in charge of helping her improve. Sakura took it on herself to go up to one of the Legendary Sannin and most feared woman to ask for training. She spent years studying, being pummeled by Tsunade, and honing her skill-set to the point of eventually surpassing her shishou, which is not an easy feat. The Strength of a Hundred Seal that took her three years of storing up chakra to create is a Jutsu very few are able to complete.
Sakura went from a small girl that was extremely self-conscious, to a top kunoichi within a few years. People doubted, overlooked, and underestimated her from the beginning, using gender and appearance as an excuse. She smashed through all those barriers (literally). People often despise her for the loyalty she’s shown to Sasuke, who doesn’t deserve it—whatsoever—and blame everything going wrong on her. There are so many instances that plenty of characters (especially in the war) would’ve died without her power, it’s not even funny, yet those facts get tossed aside carelessly. She’s had amazing character development, overcame diversity and bullying, improved herself as a person, and became one of the strongest shinobi through sheer determination.
As a woman who’s been teased for her appearance and underestimated, I resonate with her the most. Being half-Asian in a predominately white area as a teenager when my family moved came with its own trials and tribulations. Seeing a minority character grow and develop into a strong woman is very inspiring and why I chose her. I don’t blame Sakura for what the male creator of the series decided to do with her after building up so much potential.
Canonically, Joker and Sakura would probably kill each other, but that’s one of the points that I enjoy. He thinks everyone’s beneath him and has zero empathy, while she has an enormous heart and tries to improve to feel worthy of standing beside her comrades. They’re very different, but their strange appearance, penchant for violence (in various forms), and fanatical drive towards their goals is where they meet halfway. I’m a fan of the whole ‘enemies to lovers’ and ‘bad guy/small woman’ trope. Canon relationships are irrelevant in AU’s and fiction, in general. That’s the entire point of fanfiction, crack pairings and crossovers.
Harley Quinn makes appearances throughout most of my stories, but we’ve all seen how her relationship with Joker plays out. It revolves around abuse, manipulation, and abandonment. Not that my ship doesn’t at all, I’m just saying... They’re unhealthy relationship goals if that’s what you’re looking for. Personally, I like Harley better with Poison Ivy compared to J. Pam has been a big part of the healing process after Harley had enough of his shit. Saying she fits better includes keeping a woman in a toxic environment where she’s never respected or appreciated and constantly hurt without a single care.
I like to think that J has a good-eye for talent and would see that Sakura is brimming with it, even if it’s to use her as a weapon. He’s intelligent, cunning, resourceful, with ingenuity in spades. The freedom from the restraints that society puts on everyone that comes with J is very liberating, and I enjoy putting Sakura in that kind of atmosphere where she has no limits holding her back, like the Narutoverse does. Her appearance, race, gender... None of that matters in Gotham where it’s all about survival and playing the game. Him pushing Sakura beyond her limits and rattling the cage is what I’m totally living for.
Thanks for the ask and hopefully my incessant rambling answers this question now and moving forward. I get it often and not really sure why, considering all the crack pairings I’ve seen over the years, especially with Sakura.

108. Starstruck
read the scarecrow and the bell on ao3
index | from the beginning | < previous | next >
Konoha was abuzz with excitement as genin teams hung banners and balloons throughout the village. Truthfully, Rei found it rather ironic that they were assigned such a task. After all, the celebrity they were welcoming was not exactly child-friendly.
Apparently Konoha’s financial situation had dipped during this time of routine and calm. As such, Lady Tsunade had invented the wonderful idea that perhaps the village should pour more of their efforts into promoting tourism. Rei was not brave enough to note how dangerous this might be with the Akatsuki a quietly approaching threat. Before she could say anything, Shizune cringed and swiped her finger across her neck, a warning. Tsunade had clearly been stressed. Protesting her plans would likely only anger the beast.
The best way to attract visitors to Konoha, it seemed, was to piggyback on the village’s merit of being the birthplace of the great sannin, Jiraiya. There was nothing noble or respectable about this idea, however. He was not to be revered by tourists for his innate abilities but rather for his dirty books. Icha Icha was a hit the world over and so there was truly no better way to sell Konoha than to bring that fact to the fore.
Clearly, they could not use Jiraiya himself as the poster boy. Tsunade had written him a letter mapping out her idea, to which he replied emphatically but apologized for not being able to partake himself. He mentioned that Naruto was progressing wonderfully with his training and they could not afford to stop for anything, but that they hoped Konoha would welcome them both back in a year with open arms. Regarding the tourism plan, however, Jiraiya instead suggested one of the actors from the film adaptation. After all, they were on the cusp of shooting Icha Icha Violence so a press tour was only natural. Promote the film while also promoting the village. There was no way Tsunade could say no.
The first person she contacted, of course, was Koyuki Kazahana. Known by her stage name Yukie Fujikaze, she was the stunning lead actress and therefore was certain to garner lots of positive attention. However, Koyuki was not just an actress but also the princess of the Land of Snow. When she wasn’t acting, she was pouring her heart into her country. Her assistant, Sandayu, returned their correspondence with an “I regret to inform you…” and that was the end of that.
The only other option, and the one that eventually stuck, was the leading man. Keihaku Goman was charming and appealing with a lithe figure and a sparkling smile. Young adult magazines paid special attention to “eyes like pools of water” and “hair like sunshine.” He was, for all intents and purposes, a heartthrob. When it was announced that he was visiting Konoha, all the women went insane. Hair salons saw a significant increase in appointments and cute dresses flew off the racks of fashionable clothing stores. Anything to capture the attention of a sexy movie star.
“I can’t believe how everyone is freaking out” Kakashi mentioned as he and Rei weaved through the mess. “I never expected everyone in the village to be so head over heels for some actor.”
“Well, for what it’s worth” Rei replied, “he’s technically not just some actor. He’s an actor who just so happens to have a full-frontal nudity scene in a racy blockbuster. You’d be surprised what desperate women would do for dick.”
Kakashi chuckled and shook his head. As big a fan as he was of the Icha Icha series, he just couldn’t wrap his brain around the absolute chaos erupting from this man’s visit. “At least you have a level head” he replied, wrapping an arm around his fiancée. Rei gave a definitive nod, rubbing the back of her neck and looking the other way. Her silence was enough to warrant suspicion. “You do have a level head, right…?” he asked slowly.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah! Yeah! Of course!” Rei replied. She pasted a huge grin on her face and swatted at the air dismissively. Kakashi was not convinced. He stared her down for a long, silent moment before finally breaking.
“Rei, please don’t tell me you’re googly-eyed for him, too” Kakashi complained.
“I’m not!” Rei exclaimed. She rubbed her forearms and muttered, “I only like him a normal amount.”
“God dammit, Rei” Kakashi whined, tossing his head back and groaning. And here he thought she wasn’t like other girls.
“I’m sorry!” Rei replied. “It’s not like I’m going to lose my shit over this guy, I just think he’s kind of, I don’t know, aesthetically pleasing. You know, in that glittery film actor sort of way. That’s all it is! Come on, Kakashi. It’s really not that big of a deal.”
Pouting, Kakashi muttered a halfhearted, “Alright” but it was clear he was bothered by this. And if he was bothered, then Rei was bothered. She stopped him dead in the middle of the street, taking his forearm to pull him closer to her. He watched as she cupped his face in her hands, stared him in the eyes.
“Kakashi, believe me when I say this is not a big deal” she said. “I love you more than words can ever describe. There is no one else I would rather spend my future with.” She held up her left hand, her engagement ring glittering in the sunlight. “This should be proof enough of that.”
Kakashi stared at her for a moment, searching her gaze for any hint of dishonesty. When he found none, his expression quickly shifted from anxiety to amusement. A satisfied smile spread across his masked face as he lyrically teased, “You have a crush on Keihaku.”
Rei’s face immediately turned bright red. She removed her hands from his face and slapped him on the arm, turning away from him to hide her embarrassment. “Shut up! I already told you I do not!” she insisted.
“Okay…” Kakashi chuckled, delightfully unconvinced. He plunged his hands into his pockets and began strolling back toward their apartment, humming to himself.
“Kakashi, get back here!” Rei shouted, chasing after him. “I told you, it’s not like that! I don’t have a crush on this guy! Kakashi!”
Keihaku Goman arrived in the Hidden Leaf a few days after, welcomed by a large crowd and sweeping processional. Women screamed and fainted at the sight of him—to think, a movie star here, in Konoha, in the flesh. They would give anything to earn so much as a glance or a wink from him. A team of ANBU escorted him to the hokage’s office where he was to meet with Tsunade about his itinerary. Among his bodyguards was Rei.
In true movie star fashion, Keihaku hammed it up for the crowd as he ventured down the street, winking and waving at swooning women. Rei watched as she followed close behind and wondered how a human being could possibly be so charismatic. Every move seemed carefully choreographed and yet totally effortless. Was he playing a part, or was he truly this princely? She couldn’t tell. The longer she pondered it, however, the redder her face grew and she forced herself to remain focused. She could not let herself get distracted. She had a duty to fulfill.
Once they had reached the hokage’s office, Tsunade welcomed him warmly. At least she seemed completely unaffected by his charm. Rather, she remained polite and diplomatic just as the hokage should be. Shizune, on the other hand, was forced to muster all of her strength in order to remain standing. From the other side of the room, a group of jonin—Kakashi included—tuned in for the briefing.
Rei and Kakashi locked eyes with one another as Tsunade explained Keihaku’s tasks. He had a busy schedule ahead of him including photoshoots and even a commercial. Anything to amp up Konoha’s tourism. Meanwhile, Kakashi made discrete hand gestures to his fiancée—an overflow from his ANBU days—to communicate to her what he was thinking. And what he was thinking was that he was going to milk every ounce of her embarrassment. Her face turned bright red and she swatted at the air in a silent attempt to shut him up. Kakashi quickly dropped his eyes and stifled his laughter as Tsunade paused mid-sentence.
“Is something the matter?” she asked harshly, glaring at Rei.
Clearing her throat, Rei steadied herself and croaked, “N-no, Lady Tsunade. Just, uh…just a fly.”
Tsunade narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips, completely unconvinced. She slowly turned her attention back to Keihaku’s itinerary but Rei could feel a scolding waiting for her after Tsunade was done. Once her and Keihaku were yet again occupied with his obligations, Rei shot Kakashi a sharp warning glare. Even with her mask on, he could tell her expression was something fierce.
Kakashi thumbed through Makeout Paradise as he waited outside the ANBU headquarters. It was that strange liminal period of dusk when the sky was growing too dark to read under and yet not dark enough to turn the streetlights on. And then there was a heavy shove of the door and Rei trudged out into the night air, fraught and fatigued. Kakashi tucked his book into his back pouch and waved with a grin, striding toward her. Rei knew just by the look on his face that she was in for a ration of shit. He was far too perky to not be suspicious. “So, how did your first day as Keihaku’s bodyguard go?” he asked, lacing his fingers with hers as they walked home.
“It was fine” Rei replied bluntly. “Nothing to write home about.”
Kakashi was silent for a moment before teasing, “He tried to touch your butt, didn’t he?”
“Kakashi! No! What the fuck?!” Rei exclaimed, swatting him on the arm. “Stop that! I already told you, it’s not like that!”
“I’ll believe it when I see it” Kakashi sighed sleepily. He was so nonchalant, so unaffected, it made Rei’s blood boil. Grumbling, she quickened her pace with arms folded across her chest to further enforce her displeasure. They walked along in silence for a few moments more before Kakashi went in for the kill again. “So are you going to ask him on a date?”
“What the fuck? No! Of course not!” Rei shouted. She shoved her left hand in his face. “Does this mean nothing to you, Kakashi?”
“I don’t know” Kakashi joked. “Keihaku does have a lot more money than I do. Are you sure he wouldn’t be able to buy you something nicer?”
Rei rolled her eyes and huffed her bangs out of her face. “Even if he did, I wouldn’t want it” she insisted. “It wouldn’t mean as much.”
He had to admit, hearing her get so heated about this was kind of affirming for him. He loved knowing that she was so defensively in love with him, that the thought of even considering another man made her furious. But at the same time, watching her get flustered about finding someone else attractive was far too fun. Besides, it was clear to him that he had nothing to worry about in terms of her faithfulness. He could tease her to his heart’s content and it wouldn’t mean a single thing.
“So you’re saying that if Keihaku burst out of that window right there, with confetti and trumpets blaring, and got down on one knee and asked you to go on a date with him, that you would say no?” he asked, suppressing laughter. She glared up at him, tiny but lethal. Poking her puffed out cheek, he added, “Because that is a very tempting offer!”
Rei swatted his hand away and shouted, “Maybe you should go on a date with him then, Kakashi!”
Kakashi couldn’t help but laugh. “You know, if he ever did somehow ask you on a date, I think you should go for it.” It was that statement that firmly stopped Rei in her tracks. What was he insinuating here? First of all: if he somehow asked her on a date? Was he trying to say she would be undesirable to someone like Keihaku? Not that it mattered. She didn’t care either way. But was he trying to say she wasn’t fit to be seen with a celebrity? And more importantly, I think you should go for it?! Was her fiancé really suggesting she cheat on him? Her disgust and confusion were almost palpable. Kakashi, however, was completely unphased. Of all the women in Konoha, he doubted Keihaku would ever ask Rei out. It wasn’t that he considered her undesirable in the least sense—she was the most intelligent, beautiful, and talented woman he knew. And that was exactly the problem. Men like Keihaku had no interest in women of substance. All they cared about were breast implants and sex appeal. Women with lips soaked in gloss and hair permed to perfection and fake tans to rival the gods. Keihaku would never go for someone like Rei. Truthfully, Kakashi took comfort in that. If, for whatever reason, he did ask for a date with his fiancée, however, Kakashi was not going to protest. He wasn’t giving her up in the slightest. He knew even one dinner would never lead to anything serious. Celebrities were far too shallow for that sort of thing—Keihaku could never dream of having a relationship with as much depth and integrity as that of Kakashi and Rei. Rather, Kakashi’s reasoning was much more darkly funny: he would’ve killed to see Rei make a fool of herself in front of a famous movie star. He loved her more than life itself but he knew she was far too crass and clumsy for the likes of Keihaku. The two of them in a room together, candlelight and smooth jazz, was a recipe for disaster and Kakashi was far too curious for his own good. He only regretted not having popcorn.
Rei’s glare hardened as she considered the situation. Finally, she blurted, “Then fine. Maybe I will go on a date with him then!”
“Okay” Kakashi chuckled. He patted her head as they walked along, flattening the fluff of her ponytail in the process. Rei slapped his hand away and grumbled, pouting the entire way home.
That night, she tossed and turned, restless. Thoughts of Keihaku swirled relentlessly through her head—a subject she did not want to think about. She was not interested in him. He was not going to ask her out. She was not imagining him asking her out. She was definitely not envisioning them sitting across a fancy table looking into each other’s eyes and having an incredibly in-depth and profound conversation with one another. No, Keihaku was useless. He was as profound as a cardboard cutout. She refused.
The following day, Kakashi was lounging on the couch with a book when Rei returned home. Something was off about her, however. Somehow, her bangs seemed to hide more of her face than usual. What he could see of it was beet red. Sitting up abruptly, Kakashi asked, “How was work?”
“It was…fine” Rei replied, voice restrained and cracking. Toshio picked his head up, ears perking at the squeak in her voice. Her tone was far too high-pitched to be normal. Something was wrong, Kakashi was sure of it.
“Did anything happen today…?” he asked slowly. Rei kicked her shoes off at the front door, skirted around the kitchen table. She dropped to her knees on the living room floor so as to snuggle Toshio. Anything to keep herself preoccupied.
“Um, well, I mean…” she stammered. “Kind of?”
“Kind of?” Kakashi repeated. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. “Like what?”
Rei wiped her nose with the back of her hand, covered her mouth so that her voice was muffled. “You’re never going to believe this, but…” she started. The suspense was killing him. Kakashi didn’t think he could handle it. What the hell was she hiding? And then, unable to restrain laughter any longer, she said it. “Keihaku literally asked me the fuck out.”
By the time the words spilled from her lips, she had fallen back onto the floor covering her face and laughing hysterically. Kakashi couldn’t tell if she was delighted with the prospect or merely thought it was so ridiculously stupid, she was reduced to deliria. All he knew for certain was that it very quickly felt as if someone had ripped his spine right out of his body and now here he was, hollow and unstructured. Suddenly the whole idea wasn’t so funny anymore.
“He…he asked you out?” Kakashi repeated slowly, voice quiet and numb. Then, voice rising slightly in horror, he asked, “W-Well what did you say?! You didn’t agree, did you?!”
Rei rolled her eyes and repositioned herself on the floor, fixing a wedgie and smoothing her dress down over her stomach. “What do you take me for, Kakashi? A whore?” she asked. Folding her arms back behind her head then, she added, “Of course I said yes.”
The entire room was spinning. Kakashi couldn’t take this. He felt like he was going to be sick. He never should’ve teased her about this. He never should’ve encouraged her. Now he just felt like an idiot. The sickening realization made him uneasy and shaky: oh god, he was going to lose her. “I-is he blind?” Kakashi erupted. “Did he not see the ring on your finger? Does commitment mean nothing to him? To you?”
Finally understanding the gravity of his response, Rei sat up and frowned. “Calm down, Kakashi, fuck” she groaned. “Were you not the one who told me to go for it if he ever asked?”
“Yes, but I never thought he’d actually do it!” Kakashi exclaimed. “I don’t want anyone else to think you’re available, or that you don’t respect our commitment to each other. We made a promise, Rei. Does it mean nothing to you?”
Rei narrowed her eyes, brows knitting in offense. “Of course, Kakashi” she said, her voice stone cold. “More than you even know.” She pressed her hand to her stomach, filing through all the thoughts she had been having the past few weeks. Of taking his last name, of becoming his wife, of wanting to conceive a child with him. He had no idea the things she had been considering, of how deeply and passionately she had been imagining their future together. Rising to her feet, she approached Kakashi and situated herself between his legs, holding his face firm in her hands. “Nothing is going to happen, I promise” she insisted. “The only reason I agreed to this is because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have terrible ideas. Is that clear?”
Kakashi frowned, trying to make himself believe in her words. Then, looking up at her with eyes soft and pleading, he asked quietly, “What kinds of ideas?”
A sinister grin touched Rei’s lips as she straddled his lap, running her fingers through his hair. “Oh, nothing too serious. I’m just going to milk this for all it’s worth and at the end of the night, probably pull his pants down in front of everyone in the middle of the restaurant.”
Kakashi let out an airy chuckle, shaking his head. “Are you sure that’s not just because you want his dick, too?” he asked.
Rei couldn’t restrain her incredulous laughter. “Absolutely not!” she exclaimed. “No, it’s because I think the whole world deserves to know the truth: that he actually has, and I quote, an ‘immaculately tiny penis’.”
Kakashi’s face burned at the prospect and he struggled to suppress the laughter rising in his throat. “Immaculately tiny?” he repeated. “Where did you hear that?”
Shrugging, Rei replied, “I found it in a pamphlet about the movie’s production.” Leaping to her feet, she then rushed into the kitchen and began rummaging around the junk drawer. “They said it was so unexpected and wrong for the role, that they had to hire a dick double just for the full-frontal nudity” she continued. She exclaimed with pride then as she found the very pamphlet in question crumpled up in the back of the drawer, presenting it to her fiancé with a dramatic flourish. She climbed onto the couch beside him, drawing her legs up to sit cross-legged, as she watched him flip through it, equal parts fascinated and frightened. “You know, for a movie based on a bestselling book, you’d think all of these psychotic women would do a little more reading.”
“I guess this explains his confidence” Kakashi replied. “He must be compensating.”
“I’ll say” Rei agreed.
Kakashi had to admit, Rei’s tone and her casual attitude were reassuring but there was still something nagging in the back of his mind. Something that still bothered him about all of this. He folded the pamphlet back up and placed it on the coffee table, then thought for a moment before turning to her and asking, “Is that a dealbreaker?”
Dumbfounded, Rei blinked despondently. Did Kakashi really think Keihaku’s charisma and wealth alone was enough to make her leave him? A sly smile touched her lips as she reached out and abruptly took hold of Kakashi’s crotch. His entire face turned bright red as he looked back at her, studying the determination and certainty of her gaze. “Nothing can compare to you, Kakashi” she insisted. “As far as dicks go, I’ve won the jackpot. There’s no way in hell I would ever give that up, or more importantly the amazing man it’s attached to.” She could feel him begin to harden from her touch and that gave her all the confidence to know that he understood her perfectly.
Kakashi watched with focused intent as she gathered her hair into the signature ponytail, an elastic around her wrist and a bobby pin cinched between her lips. He only took slight comfort in her rather business-professional outfit: a simple button down, a knee-length skirt. But the way the buttons strained at her breasts, the tight-fitting nature of the skirt…he couldn’t help but shudder. Friday evening had come way too quickly for his taste.
All week, he had debated being upfront and honest, telling her that this was a bad idea and refusing to let her go through with it. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Despite everything, he did not own her. If she wanted to do this, then that was her choice and no one else’s. Rei shoved a few bobby pins into the underside of her ponytail, ensuring that the shorter strands would stay put throughout the night, then flipped her head down and and misted the underside with hairspray. Kakashi coughed into the crook of his neck, the cloud of noxious fumes only further enforcing his nausea. Rei turned toward him once she was finished, studying the discomfort on his face. “Are you going to sit around sulking like this all night, Kakashi?” she asked. Kakashi pouted and dropped his gaze. Rei set the bottle of hairspray on the bathroom counter and approached him, tilting his chin up to look her in the eyes. “If you really didn’t want me to do this, all you had to do was speak up, Kakashi.”
“I’m not going to tell you what to do” Kakashi replied, but Rei could tell there was more that he intended to say. After a beat of silence, he cupped her cheek in his hand and firmly added, “I don’t want you to do this.”
Quite frankly, Rei was starting to grow frustrated with his conflicted attitude. Sometimes, he would seem fine. Completely unaffected. As if he knew without a shadow of a doubt that this would amount to nothing, that her faithfulness could not be wavered. Other times, however, he was fussy and distant. Time and time again, Rei had told him that if he was truly against her doing this, then to let her know. And time and time again, he said the same thing: I’m not going to tell you what to do. She understood that this was a sign that he wanted her to drop out without him having to ask, but the truth of the matter was that she could not bring herself to pass up an opportunity like this. She wanted to enjoy the finer things for one night and make a famous man look like an idiot in the process. To absolutely disparage a wealthy heartthrob while sipping fine champagne that tasted like power. If Kakashi didn’t want her to go through with this, she needed to hear it straightforward. And now here he was, fifteen minutes from her restaurant reservation, telling her what he had held back all week.
“Kakashi…” Rei sighed. She pressed her forehead to his chest in defeat and a surge of relief washed over the copy ninja. She was finally giving in. She was going to back out at the last minute and save him from certain destruction. She rested a hand upon his chest, caressed him comfortingly. “You had all week to tell me this. Don’t you think it’s a little late to turn back now?”
Kakashi froze, his heart leaping into his chest. “S-so are you still going to go?” he asked.
Pulling back, Rei looked him in the eyes and sighed, “Yes. Yes, I am still going to go.”
“B-but—” Kakashi stammered. Before he could say anything more, though, Rei had slipped past him to retrieve her purse from the kitchen table. She slipped her shoes on at the door—the strappy sandals she always wore for more formal occasions—before turning to leave. Kakashi could feel his insides twisting and decaying at the sight, panic surging through his veins. He never should’ve egged her on. He never should’ve teased her and encouraged her. Oh god, he was going to lose her. He had felt so secure about their relationship and now he was going to lose her. All he could manage to say to her was a croaked, “When will you be back?”
Rei paused in the doorway, looking up at him, and fed him a sympathetic smile. “I’ll be back before nine. Promise” she said. Then, her sympathy slowly morphed into slyness as she added, “Don’t worry, I have something extra special planned for when I get back.” Her gaze was sultry and tempting as she closed the door behind her and disappeared. Kakashi should’ve felt relieved—after all, she was promising him something supreme upon her return—but if anything, he felt even more defeated. Not only was she off to mingle with a millionaire, but now she was sexually riled up on top of it. Digging the heels of his hands into his eye sockets, Kakashi groaned and fell back onto the couch. It was going to be a long three hours.
He needed to do something, to preoccupy himself. Toshio picked his ears up as he stared back at Kakashi staring into the kitchen. He knew he should eat dinner, but his mood had swiped any hope of hunger from him. Instead, he swung open the refrigerator door and began cleaning out the spoiled food inside. He tossed the stinking plastic containers into the sink, tied up the trash bag and walked it down to the dumpster. Toshio followed, as if in hopes of finding scraps. Upon their return, Kakashi washed out the containers as well as any remaining dirty dishes. He took his time with each, paying no mind to the scalding water on his hands. He dried each one thoroughly and individually and put them away in their respective cabinets. The sun had nearly disappeared, the room growing dark. Kakashi flicked on a light and checked the clock. 6:45pm. This was pointless. Kakashi dropped his head back and sighed.
“Toshio, if we’re lucky” he started, “Maybe she’ll come home early.” Toshio huffed and rested his head on the floor in retaliation. Kakashi nodded, kneeling down to scratch behind the dog’s ear. “Yeah. You and me both.”
By 7 o’clock, it was clear to Kakashi that the only thing he could stand to do was read. If he could get himself right in the proper mood, nestled into the sweet spot of his literary allure, he could lose himself in the words and time would race by. He reached for Makeout Paradise, almost disgustingly satisfied with how clever this plan was meant to be, but quickly found the situation had left him changed. The book no longer brought him the same pleasure as it always had. He focused hard on the sentences in front of him, tried to envision himself and Rei in the title roles, but as luck would have it he landed on a chapter in which the third corner of the love triangle enters the plot. And in that role, all he could see was Keihaku Goman. The dashing Keihaku bursting into the room and professing his love for the heroine, Keihaku kissing her hand and begging her to choose him instead, Keihaku wrapping an arm around her waist as he whisked her into the bedroom and—
Kakashi heard the key turn in the lock and he immediately sat bolt upright. His eyes glanced to the clock. It was 8:30pm. She was home early. A hint of delight hitched in his throat. The date must have gone terribly. Perhaps it was so terrible, in fact, that Rei will never want to look at another man ever again. He hoped that that wouldn’t backfire on him, that she would not denounce all men, himself included. But now he was overthinking things. All he knew was that he needed to see her. One look and he would know exactly how things had gone. One look and it would all be over, for better or for worse.
She stepped inside and his heart surged. There she was. Deep down, a part of him was overjoyed that she had even returned at all. She locked the door behind her silently, kicked her shoes off. “Well?” Kakashi asked. She met his gaze blankly. “How was it?”
“It was fine” she replied, unbuttoning her shirt plainly as she stepped over Toshio and skirted into the living room. “Things went smoothly.”
She was far too calm. This was a bad sign. Either things went too smoothly or not smoothly at all. Kakashi wasn’t sure which he would have preferred. He watched her with laser focus as she knelt down on the floor by Toshio, slipping out of her blouse to reveal the simple white camisole underneath. He wanted to kiss the freckles on her shoulders and the scars on her forearms. The delicate lace trim was so enticing, perfectly accentuating her breasts. Kakashi frowned and wondered if Keihaku had the same thoughts. It was then that he knew there was no way things couldn’t have gone well. Dejected, Kakashi turned away to look out the window. He attempted to sound as nonchalant as possible when he asked, “So are you going to run off with Mr. Billionaire and move into his mansion with his fancy gold couch and tiny penis?” The depression in his voice, however, was far too obvious.
Knitting her brows together, Rei stared at him sharply. “You know I only have eyes for you” she insisted. “I wouldn’t want to spend my future with anyone else.” She finished unfastening the last button on her shirt and slithered out of it then, tossing it toward Kakashi from across the room. “Besides” she sighed rather dramatically, “Keihaku Goman is a total asshole, anyway.”
In retrospect, this was not the least bit surprising but the way she said it, the look on her face as she pouted and tilted her head toward the window, struck something within Kakashi. Something anxious but protective. “Why?” he asked, leaning forward. “What happened? What did he say to you?”
“It’s really nothing” Rei swatted at the air. “He just threw out some pretty petty and underhanded lines about he’s always liked ‘homegrown girls’ and shit.”
“Homegrown girls?” Kakashi repeated. He wasn’t quite sure what that meant.
Rei nodded, drawing her knees up to her chest like a small child. As cavalier as she appeared on the outside, he could tell in her eyes that something had cracked. “Yeah, you know, like local rough-and-tumble girls who live in the middle of nowhere and wrestle alligators and bake pies and shit. Anne and Scout and Jane, all that crap.” Kakashi blinked, trying to remember who, exactly, Anne and Scout and Jane were. Rei continued to speak before he could make the final connection. “Apparently Keihaku thinks that the ugly features like my scar and my crooked teeth and messy hair were ‘alluring’ in, and I quote, ‘a gross, kinky sort of way’.” Here, Rei made a face bordering both disgust and confusion. A casual acceptance of a harsh insult that deep down, she was clearly hurt by. And deep in the pit of Kakashi’s stomach grew a sharp, burning anger.
How could anyone ever say anything so cruel? And to his fiancée of all people? Kakashi sucked in a deep breath and clenched his fists at his sides. Nothing about the date itself or his prior uncertainty mattered anymore. All that was important now was that Keihaku Goman had hurt the love of his life and Kakashi could hardly contain himself. “The audacity…” he muttered through clenched teeth. “I can’t believe he would say something like that.” Rei turned to him and saw the darkness in his eyes, the absolute fury. Her gaze softened, sympathetic and sad. She hated seeing him get so pent up like this. And then Kakashi stood, reaching for his shoes by the front door.
“W-wait, where are you going?” Rei asked, scrambling to her feet.
Kakashi sighed and shook his head. “Someone ought to teach that asshole a lesson.”
Rei rested a gentle hand on his forearm, shook her head. Anyone else likely would’ve been far too intimidated to approach the infamous Copy Ninja in this way, but not Rei. She didn’t care. She knew better than to believe he would ever hurt her. “It’s not worth it” Rei softly insisted. “We’re never going to see him again. It’s fine.”
“But Rei—” Kakashi protested, but she simply shook her head and guided him back to the couch. She sat beside him and rested a hand on his knee. They remained silent for a long while until Kakashi calmed down. When he had, he turned to her and asked quietly, “Are you okay?”
Nodding, Rei replied, “Yeah. Yeah, I’m alright.” There was a sense of restraint in her voice, however, as if she was holding back tears. Kakashi tried to keep his cool. Forcing a laugh, Rei then added, "Honestly, I’ve heard worse from Sekkachi. Keihaku’s words mean nothing to me. He doesn’t know anything about me, so who is he to judge?”
“Rei…” Kakashi murmured. His pain in seeing her not just upset but faking a smile was immeasurable. He reached out to caress her cheek, press his forehead against hers. He closed his eyes and inhaled, drinking in every ounce of her presence. “He doesn’t know a damn thing” he whispered. “Rei, you’re the strongest and most amazing and intelligent and beautiful woman I’ve ever known. I just...I can’t fathom how anyone can be so…just…” He groaned in frustration, struggling to find the proper words.
“It’s okay” Rei assured him, studying his face and running her fingers through his hair. “I know.”
Kakashi grazed the scar across the bridge of her nose with his thumb, combed her hair back and chuckled lightly when his fingers got caught in the tangles. “I just can’t stand anyone hurting you” he finally whispered.
“I know” Rei whispered back, dripping with sympathy. “It’s fine, though. Really” she insisted. Kakashi opened his eyes and leaned back so as to better view her face. He searched her expression for the sadness he was sure he would find, but instead she now seemed at peace. She laughed softly as she added, “I think really, he’s just bitter because they recast his character in the next Makeout film.”
Kakashi blinked in disbelief, trying to digest this new information. “They did…?”
“Mmhmm” Rei replied, and now she was fighting a smile. Kakashi’s heart sang. She toyed with the hem of his shirt as she explained, “Apparently he was a total diva on set and was just an absolute nightmare to work with. I heard Yukie nearly quit on five separate occasions and insisted even she wasn’t this bad when she was a full-time actress. You can use that information however you will—I’m sure you’d know better than I would. But his attitude on top of the dick double debacle basically made for an absolute mess and they fired him two weeks ago right before filming began. I take it he’s milking whatever claim to fame he has left before the news breaks and everyone shifts their adoration to the new guy.”
Kakashi scoffed and nodded. “Good riddance” he sighed. This new information brought with it a welcome sense of relief, something Kakashi had been desperate for all week. “Did you at least humiliate him?” he then asked.
A sly, sickening smile then spread across Rei’s lips. “Maybe…” she said in sing-song. “Let’s just say that if all the swooning women didn’t know about his assets before, they do now.”
“You’re terrible” Kakashi shook his head. He only regretted not being there to see it himself.
“I bet that’s the last time he’ll ever try to mess with a ‘homegrown girl’” Rei replied. It was refreshing to see her use what was once an insult as a term of power and pride now. Keihaku Goman may not have seen the merit in a homegrown girl, but Kakashi certainly did. He wouldn’t have wanted her any other way.
Sighing, Kakashi leaned back against the couch, taking delight in Rei automatically snuggling up against his chest. When she laid beside him like this, everything just felt right. Her head nestled into the dip where his collar met his shoulder, her hand firmly monitoring his heartbeat. Toshio followed suit, leaping onto the open cushion to snuggle up beside them. “So you really wouldn’t leave me for some fancy film actor?” Kakashi asked, toying with Rei’s hair as he held her close.
Rei laughed and shook her head, looking up at him with a glimmer of ingenuity in her eyes. His heart swelled, he loved her so much. “And give up becoming Mrs. Hatake? Wife of the infamous Copy Ninja? I could never.” Toshio barked in stark agreement and Kakashi couldn’t contain himself any longer. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, burying his face in the crook of her neck so as to plant tiny little kisses all along her shoulder and collarbone. She squirmed with uproarious laughter, Toshio barking in amused spectatorship. It was moments like these, snapshots of the little life they had created together, that were all that truly mattered. The simple things. The things that money couldn’t buy. And that was enough. It was more than enough.

my sweet sweet bean, would you be up to writing a ficlet for me for Naruto, please? Depending on how much of the show you've actually watched, I would just love to see kakagai or kagami/tobirama being domestic? If no, that's totally cool, I just wanted to ask :) xoxoxo
My dear friend, hello~ Honestly, even though it will always have a special place in my heart as my first online fandom I haven’t actually consumed canon Naruto content since just before the Great Ninja War in the manga. Because of that my characterization and stuff are going to be slightly skewed. Also, this takes place in an alternate universe where every time something bad happened Sasuke didn’t react in the Most Extra Way so a lot of stuff didn’t happen? I just wanted everything to be a bit more relaxed.
Anyway, some domestic KakaGai (because I’m not entirely sure who Kagami is) for you my friend, I hope it’s good enough~
Of all the things that Kakashi hates, and there are quite a lot of them, paperwork is ranked pretty high up there.
Kakashi sighs and keeps at it. Somehow, Naruto and Sasuke managed to get their most recent mission classified as an S ranked national secret, which at this point seems to be an inevitable part of them being within five feet of a fight. Kakashi should really just talk to Tsunade about promoting them to Jounin or something. At least that way more of their missions will already have been classified and there wouldn’t be so much paperwork every time they went overboard.
Honestly, at this point Sakura is becoming his favorite student. At least she doesn’t give him extra paperwork to do.
Kakashi sighs again and hunts through his stack of paperwork for the old report he needs to cross reference as evidence. Someone’s face presses into his hair and he looks up to see Gai smiling down at him. Gai’s arm wraps around Kakashi’s shoulder to pull Kakashi back from his slumped position. Behind him Gai’s weight is familiar and relaxing.
“Gai,” Kakashi greets.
“Hello, my wonderful Kakashi,” Gai responds. “You’re sighing quite a lot.”
“Paperwork,” Kakashi says and Gai nods his understanding. “Naruto and Sasuke are a menace.”
Gai chuckles. “I know you wouldn’t trade your students for the world.”
“Maybe not,” Kakashi sighs. “But sometimes I’m tempted.”
Gai pushes another kiss into his hair and Kakashi relaxes even more. Having Gai around is steadying in and out of battle. He doesn’t feel overwhelmed with Gai by his side, instead he feels like someone is in his corner. He and Gai will always support each other.
“You’re not,” Gai says.
Kakashi feels his eye twitch. “You can stop calling me out anytime, Gai.”
Gai chuckles and pulls back. “Who would I be if I didn’t keep my most hip rival in check?”
Kakashi resists the urge to stick his tongue out in Gai’s direction like a kid. His students are rubbing off on him. Gai flashes him a smile, bright and steady. Kakashi lets it go, shaking his head with exasperation.
“You should take a break,” Gai says. “That paperwork will still be there in a few hours and our Honorable Lady Fifth will understand if it’s a little late, especially if it’s you.”
Kakashi turns his entire body in Gai’s direction. “Are you implying that I’m chronically late?”
“Are you implying that you’re not?”
Kakashi really does stick his tongue out in Gai’s direction this time, maturity be damned. Gai laughs, a full and hearty sound that fills their living space with mirth. It makes Kakashi smile to hear it. His chest is warm with the sound of Gai’s amusement and that warmth, as always, chases away Kakashi’s ghosts if only for a little while.
“I’ll have you know that I always have a perfectly reasonable explanation for being late.”
“But is it always factual,” Gai teases.
“That’s irrelevant.”
Gai’s expression softens around the edges, his smile becoming a bit more wistful. Kakashi reaches out and grabs Gai’s hand. He pulls and slowly, as if on a string, Gai is pulled down with it until he’s close enough for Kakashi to steal a kiss from. He takes one kiss and then another, soft and slow like he isn’t planning to go anywhere because he isn’t.
“Don’t worry so much,” Kakashi murmurs into Gai’s mouth.
Gai knows all of Kakashi’s demons, he’s seen Kakashi break down. Of all people Gai knows what ghosts Kakashi fights against in the early mornings and he loves Kakashi anyway.
Everyone has their ghosts, of course. It’s all about finding someone who won’t shy away from them. Kakashi knows few people braver than Gai.
After a string of long, slow kisses Gai pulls back a bit. “Come on, you can take a break.”
Kakashi sighs and drops his forehead down to Gai’s collarbone. “I thought I already was.”
“A real break, Kakashi.”
“If I take a break I’m worried I just won’t come back to it,” Kakashi admits. “Getting all the paperwork in a row for something that’s been classified and must be extremely well documented is mind-numbingly boring. I can’t imagine having to do this all the time. If anyone ever asks me to be Hokage remind me to turn them down.”
Gai laughs. “Of course, my dear Kakashi. Will you take a break if I promise to make you sit down and finish in a few hours?”
Kakashi rolls his head to the side to eye Gai’s throat. It’s a nice throat, all strong lines and sharp adam's apple. “It’s going to be difficult,” Kakashi says. “I won’t come back to this paperwork quietly.”
Gai’s hands slide down Kakashi’s back. “I’ll manage somehow.”
Kakashi chuckles and presses an open mouthed kiss to Gai’s neck just to feel Gai tremor. “If Tsunade kills me you have to cry at the funeral.”
“Naturally,” Gai laughs, easy and relaxed. His hands travel lower and Kakashi feels safe and warm.

Hi again can you make a part 2 to the dance one with Genma? Maybe them asking Tsunade, getting ready for the dance and the actual dance.
@litkatkim I hope this is okay! I know it took me a while, and I didn’t get to include everything I wanted to but I didn’t want to make it too long! This is my last request in my inbox and now I can focus totally on my other fics without feeling guilty, woohoo! Thanks for being such a sweetie and waiting so patiently for this!
Words: 3.022Rating: GeneralPairing: Genma x Female Reader [Sequel to this post] Read on AO3
You stood beforeTsunade, hands wringing with nerves as Genma spoke with herseriously. He stood a few steps ahead of you, as if to protect youfrom the older woman’s deadpan stare. You knew this was a bad idea.
“Youwant to what?” sheasked, folding her hands together and lowering her head to stare atyou while Genma spoke.
“I asked her ifshe would go to the dance with me, and she said yes. But we wanted toget your permission first,” Genma said quickly, his senbontwitching nervously in his mouth with every word. “Or, rather, second I guess, since I already asked …”
“Youdo realize this dance was for the shinobi only?”Tsunade asked, one eyebrow raising seemingly in harsh judgment.
“Yes,” Genmasaid, shuffling slightly to his left to block you from view of theHokage. “And she was worried about that! She didn’t want to gowith me unless it was okay with you, Hokage-sama. So we came here toask you for your permission.”
Tsunade sighedheavily and sat up, folding her arms across her chest and lookingfrom Genma to you, unimpressed. “You sound like a teenager askingto take my kid out to the movies or something. You’re not sixteen,Genma. And she’s not my kid. I hired her as a dance instructor, andI think it’s fine if she wants to go to the dance with you - eventhough she’s not a shinobi. Besides,” Tsunade gave a knowingsmile to you, “I’m sure that it’d be good having her there. Shecan correct any missteps - and I’m sure there’ll be plenty.”
You bowed deeply, feeling your face flush hot. “Thank you, Hokage-sama! I appreciateit a lot!”
Genma bowed as well.“Thank you,” he said.
“Just don’t messaround,” Tsunade called as Genma ushered you towards the door. “Iwant you two to be at the dance! If I don’t see you, I’ll sendANBU after you to track you down. Got it?”
Fearstruck you at the word ANBU.You weren’t entirely sure what it meant, but it didn’t sound good- especially if they were supposed to track you down.
“Yes,Hokage-sama,” Genma called out before shoving you through the opendoor and down the hall. “C’mon, let’s hurry up.”
“Where are wegoing?”
“We’re got toget you something to wear.” He tugged at your sleeve and you pulledaway in embarrassment. “I mean, not that this isn’t cute but …you’ve got to dress up. It’s a dance.”
“I know it’s adance,” you said a bit defensively, hugging yourself and leaningaway from Genma. “But I … I’m not sure how much I like the ideaof going shopping … with you.”
“Well that’smean.”
You shook your head, turning to face him once you left the stairs and your feet met the hard-packed earth. “Ijust … You don’t want to go shopping with me!”
“I don’t want togo, or you don’t want me to go?”
You turned away andshrugged. “B-Both?”
Genma rolled hissenbon over his tongue and shrugged. “Alright. I respect that. ButI’m gonna ignore it.”
“Huh?” youasked, turning to look at him.
He grabbed yourwrist and pulled you towards the shops. “We’ve only got a fewhours to go shopping. It took you so long to get the nerve up to askTsunade about even going, that we wasted a lot of valuable time.”
“Sorry …”
“Don’t worryabout it. If I were you, I’d be intimidated if I was asked out by aguy as handsome as myself, too.” He grinned wide, wiggling hiseyebrows. You blushed and socked him in the arm.
“Knock it o-off!You’re not as f-funny as you think.”
“Really? That’skind of a shame, because I think I’m hilarious.” His smile toldyou he was teasing and you rolled your eyes, still trying to processthe fact that a guy like him wanted anything to do with you. Itseemed so strange that he’d even want to talk to you, and yet herehe was - escorting you to a shop so you could pick out a dress forthe Shinobi Ball, something you never imagined you’d ever attend.Genma let go of your wrist and strolled alongside you comfortably, turning his head up to look at the afternoon sky. You took a momentto admire him, smiling softly as he chewed on the senbon then pursedhis lips together and let out a whistle. Whatever Genma saw in you,you were glad he did see it because this was a moment you never would have wanted to miss.
“I’m not sure I… You can’t!” you protested, clutching at the silky folds ofthe dress you wore. “You can’t buy this for me!”
“Why not? Youcan’t afford it.”
“H-Hey …”
“That’snot what I meant! I mean, you’re a dance instructorin a shinobi village. A village that’s still recovering from a war.And I know for a fact that business for you hasn’t been all thatfrequent since the war started.I just want to do something nice for you, since I’m the one whoasked you to go with me …” He reached out and looked at the pricetag. Disguising his surprise with a couch, he dropped the tag andshrugged. “It’s not too expensive! It’s fine. But you gottamake sure - is this one you want?”
“Genma -”
“Is this the oneyou want?”
You turned to lookat yourself in the full-body mirror, examining the soft fabricflowing around you. It complimented your skin tone nicely and youreyes seemed to shine in the lights framing the mirror, though youwere partially convinced it was from how happy you were. You wereabsolutely glowing and a happy smile spread across your face as youcaught sight of Genma standing behind you in the mirror, looking atyou with admiration. Blushing warmly, you rubbed your arms and turnedaround.
“Yes,” youmurmured, “this is the one I want.”
“Good,” Genmasaid, grinning. “I hoped so. Alright, go get changed and we’llcheck out, huh?”
“Okay,” you saidbefore heading back into the stall to change back into your clothes.
“Andyou’re absolutely sure?”Genma asked through the door.
“Are you trying tomake me doubt myself? Because it’s working.”
“No - not that! But this shop has a No Returns policy, so …”
“Y-Yes, then! I’msure! Absolutely!”
“Okay … good.Uhm … I’ll go wait up front for you.”
Yousighed, looking at yourself in the mirrors lining the walls of thechanging room. You turned around, inspecting yourself from everyangle. Was this thedress you wanted? Pushing out all the negative thoughts and guiltthat clouded your mind, you stared at yourself from every angle inthe small room and nodded firmly. Yes. This was the dress. This wasyour dress.
Not wanting to keepGenma waiting any longer, you quickly changed clothes and joined himup front, the dress draped delicately over your arm.
The dance was beingheld at one of the buildings reconstructed by Yamato. It had beendecorated with paper lanterns, stone statues of lucky animals, andone corner held a small altar with burning incense so each guestcould pay respects for every life lost in the war. The buildingsmelled like jasmine and vanilla, but it wasn’t overpowering.Dozens of shinobi had already arrived and were dressed inuncomfortably formal attire. No one looked pleased and they were allstanding off to the side, muttering under their breaths about“wasting time” and how it was “silly” this had beenmandatory. Gai was there, looking surprisingly dapper in a tuxedowith a pressed white shirt and a flashy green tie. He smiled brightlyas you arrived, looking skittish and embarrassed to be surrounded bysuch powerful ninja.
“Hello!” Gaicalled, waving you over to the dessert table he was sitting beside inhis wheelchair. Kakashi was lounging there too, nose pressed into thepages of his book. He too was dressed in a suit, but had a smoothblack mask to match. You and Genma quickly walked over to the pairand you bowed in greeting; Genma merely gave a nod and Kakashi wavedback curtly.
“You lookradiant,” Gai said, beaming. “We had no idea you would be here! But it’s a pleasant surprise! Are you here to upstage us all? Youknow, I’ve still been practicing. This little injury can’t keepme down,” he said as he tapped on his wrapped leg. “Right,Kakashi?”
The silver-hairedjonin sighed “He’s been insisting we all practice together.”
“Oh good,” yousaid, lighting up. “So all my hard work hasn’t gone to waste!Thank you, Gai. I appreciate it.”
Kakashiblushed in embarrassment and looked away. “I - I didn’t say itwas a waste topractice …”
“Of course!” Gaishouted, giving you a thumbs up. “And I see - are you twotogether?”
You blushed hard butGenma stepped closer to throw an arm around your shoulder. “I askedher to the dance and she said yes,” he replied.
“Good for you!”Gai smiled. “I think you’re just about the only ones to get adate.” He looked around the room at the other shinobi and shook hishead. “It’s a bit pathetic isn’t it?”
“I wouldn’t saythat,” you began, following his gaze. Your face fell when you sawthat everyone was standing around on the outskirts of the dancefloor, looking miserable and awkward. You saw Iruka was trying tohide from a hoard of some of the older retired kunoichi who had settheir sights on him. Yamato was standing by himself, looking the mostuncomfortable in a suit, talking to somebody about how he’d made thebuilding they were in - and the table they were using - and thechairs they were sitting in …
“Well?” Genmaasked, bringing you out of your thoughts.
“Huh?” you said, turning to look at him.
“Whatdo you say? No one else is going to start dancing without someincentive. You’rethe dance instructor. Why don’t you show them what all thoselessons were for?” He held out his hand and you tentatively tookit, squeezing his fingers in yours.
“Alright … uhm, who’s leading this time?”
Genma smirked andquirked one eyebrow. “Does it matter?”
Rolling your eyes, you turned to face him and placed your hand on his shoulder, his handfinding a place on your waist. “Fine, then. I guess we’ll startand see where it goes …”
“Sounds good tome.”
“We’ll do thefirst dance we learned … is that okay?”
“You’re theinstructor.”
“Yeah, but you’remy date.”
“Fair enough. It’sfine with me. That’s a dance we all attended classes for. Maybe wecan encourage them to join.”
Youlaughed softly and nodded. “Sure. We’ll go with that.” Slowlyyou took the lead, guiding Genma out towards the dance floor insmall, graceful steps. He followed suit, relinquishing leadership toyou as he’d done before. The music playing softly overhead didn’tmatch your pace nor your dance, and you tried to tune it out to countthe steps as you moved around the polished floor. As you spun around, you caught sight of the rest of the shinobi staring at you and youtripped over Genma’s feet and stopped, looking down in horror. Yourface burned hot at the realization that every single personin the room was watching you.
“Is somethingwrong?” Genma asked, trying to see your face.
You shook your headquickly, standing up and brushing your hair back. “I-It’s fine! Ijust got, uhm … c-caught up in … I was just di-distracted, wasall …”
“Right. That’sokay. Do you want to pick up where we left off?”
“Su-Sure.” Yourhands shook as you took your place flush against him again, nowcompletely aware of everyone staring at you. But unlike your dancelessons from before, these ninja wouldn’t just up and leave thebuilding. Tsunade was somewhere among the crowd watching, waiting, with hawk eyes to catch anyone trying to escape early.
Hesitantly, you bothbegan your dance around the room, less graceful this time around nowthat you were aware you were being watched. Your body tensed everytime your eyes shifted from Genma’s chest to over his shoulder. Gaiwas giving you the biggest grin you’d ever seen and two thumbs up,but everyone else seemed bored. At least they weren’t making fun ofyou … You tripped again, your mind caught up in the idea of all theshinobi laughing at you and you buried your face in your hands.
“Hey, it’salright,” Genma said, rolling the senbon around in his mouth.“You’re just nervous is all. I think everyone is. Why don’t weget a few more people out here and we can -?”
“No,” you saidsuddenly. “No, I - I’m … I’m done … for now.”
“But I -”
You shook your head, gathering up your skirt and hurrying off of the dance floor and intothe dimly lit edges of the room. Genma sighed heavily and followedafter you.
“Lovers’quarrel,” you heard someone mutter under their breath when youpassed by. Though their tone was joking you couldn’t help but feeleven more embarrassed. Not only had they seen you dancing andtripping, but they’d seen you run off without your date too. Thiswas getting worse and worse by the second.
“That was anabsolutely lovely dance,” Gai said when you brushed past him to getto the dessert table. “Your moves were so elegant and flawless!”
“Hm,” Kakashiadded, turning back to his book.
“Th-Thanks,” youmuttered, unable to look at either of them.
“Just promise meone thing,” Gai said, reaching out to touch your arm. You turned tolook at him, confused. He grinned and his eyes closed tight, “Promiseme you’ll save the last dance for me!”
Givinga forced giggle, you nodded. “Sure. I’ll do that …”Unfortunately Gai didn’t know that that probably wasyour last dance for the evening. You couldn’t imagine going backout there to make a fool of yourself again. Instead, you’d drownyour sorrows in chocolate and sweet red bean cakes. You fiddled witha tray of sweets while the rest of the shinobi continued to millabout uncomfortably. Genma appeared before you on the other side ofthe table and cocked an eyebrow.
“What’s wrong? Why don’t you want to dance? Is it me? I know I didn’t get in asmuch practice as I should’ve but, heh, I thought our privatelessons were pretty useful …” He grinned teasingly, but youweren’t amused.
Turning away, youfolded your arms across your chest. “D-Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Say stuff likethat! I-In front of people … You’re … you’re trying toembarrass me.”
Genma’s expressionshifted from entertainment to surprise. “No - No I’m not! I justdon’t know why you’re so embarrassed. I thought we were having agood time. I mean, you may have tripped up a few times but it wasgoing pretty well. What changed?”
You motioned towardsthe crowd of shinobi and backed up against the wall. “They’re allwatching me.”
“And?”
“And?And they’re - they’re watching me!I don’t want to dance in front of so many people … I’ve alreadymessed up twice.”
“Trust me, any oneof these guys would - and probably will - mess up way more thantwice. Besides, I think they were all staring at you because of howbeautiful you look and how well you dance.”
You flattened yourhands against your thighs, feeling the silk of your dress, and shookyour head. “You’re just saying that.”
“I am saying it.Because it’s true. Look at you! I bet everyone’s jealous I got togo with you.”
Blushing, you chewedon your bottom lip and looked up at him cautiously. “I don’tthink that’s true … but, I … uhm, thank you.”
Genma raised aneyebrow. “Whatever. You just don’t see yourself from myperspective. I’d be jealous if someone else went with you.” Hemade his way around the dessert table and reached down to take one ofyour hands in his. “You’ve spent a week giving us all lessons forthis very moment. Now you get to be here. Who cares if no one elsedances? Who cares if they all watch? I just wanna dance with youtonight.” He looked into your eyes, his mouth curving into a soft, genuine smile. “Will you dance with me tonight?”
A happy laughescaped your lips as you grabbed his other hand and pulled himcloser, resting your head against his chest. “Yes,” you said. “Iwill.”
“Good!” Genmagently led you towards the dance floor. “Let’s show these loserswhat real dancing is, huh?” He placed a hand on your waist andpulled you closer. “Just keep your eyes on me and don’t mindanyone else. Okay?”
“Okay …”
Swiftly, he took thelead and guided you around the room. Your eyes locked onto his, warmand comforting and reassuring. Your hand gripped his, he pulled youeven closer, and rest of the room melted away. It didn’t matter ifeveryone in the entire village was watching you. All that matteredwas you and Genma.
You threw one glanceover his shoulder and laughed at the expression on Gai’s face -some mix of excitement for getting to see you dance again andjealousy for not being able to participate. Genma followed your gazeand gave a quick nod to the wheelchair-bound shinobi.
“Don’t worry,”he said, “I’ll make sure you get the last dance with her.”Turning back to you, he leaned down and softly whispered, “But allthe other dances are mine.”
Your eyes flutteredclosed and you leaned your head against his shoulder. “Genma?”
“Yeah?”
“Justshut up and dance.”

Winter Wishes 2017: Wish List
We’ve got a list, and we’re checking it twice!
Prompts cannot be claimed until Dec 1st. See the Event Post for all Rules, Dates and Info.
@arrowsbane:
Wish: In an AU where Orochimaru never took Danzo up on his offer for labs, Sarutobi dumps a trio of genetically-altered brats on him and hands him a ‘Teaching for Dummies’ book, which is not appreciated. Turns out, Orochimaru is pretty good with kids, but thinks he isn’t. Nobody else is buying that lie though.
Likes: Snakes being awesome. And Orochimaru being awesome. I blame @blackkatmagic. She did this to me.
Dislikes/Triggers: I’m pretty chill, but not keen on sexual abuse or non-con. It just feels like crossing a line, even if they are essentially paid assassins. Like, murder is one thing, but it’s just… nope.
Bonus for: Danzo trying to steal Oro’s brats and getting curb stomped.
Porn/No Porn: I do like porn on occasion, but I don’t think this wish needs it - unless Sakumo is alive in this AU, and has seduced Oro. But don’t strain yourself if you’re not comfortable.
Claimed
@modernart2012
Wish: Pacific Rim AU. Preference for MadaTobi, but I’m open to any pairing, romantic or otherwise. Doesn’t have to follow the movie, can follow the comics.
Likes: ghost!Drift (specifically to Pac Rim, anyways)… I’m pretty game for anything not in my “Dislikes”?
Dislikes/Triggers: No incest or pedophilia (not even allowed in this collective, but gonna state it anyways); Abuse - physical or emotional; if this gets porny, no noncon or dubcon or bloodplay, emetophilia, or scat. HARD NO On COCKROACHES.
Bonus for: background Xanatos Gambit, not necessarily for the kaiju, but someone else and doesn’t have to be evil. Morton’s Fork will similarly be accepted.
Porn/No Porn: Either is good. Writer’s choice.
Claimed
@sanjuno
Wish: I would like to see Madara taken from post-death (whichever of the 3 canonical instances best suit your narrative) and dropped into an AU, either replacing his otherself or having his otherself be dead/missing. It can be a trope influenced NRT world, (i.e. Soulmate Marks, ABO) or a crossover-fusion world, (i.e. NRT characters in a Star Wars or BNHA setting) or just switching out ninja for mainstream scifi or steampunk or magic. Cue Madara flailing and being overly dramatic. I would prefer a happy ending. Gen is fine. I basically want to see Madara screaming about how little sense the AU rules make while simultaneously snuggling his little brothers. B/c Madara is the Most Extra.
Likes: TobiMada. Effective Communication. Madara oblivious to (Tobirama’s) flirting. Fussing over baby brothers.
Dislikes/Triggers: Character Bashing. Non-Con. Unaddressed Dub Con.
Bonus for: n/a
Porn/No Porn: Sure, if you’re feeling it or the story calls for it. ^_^

@definitelynotaminion
Wish: Sasuke really, stupidly likes being fingered. Team 7 obliges
Likes: healthy polyamory, kinking the fuck out of Sakura’s super strength, and gentle ribbing/teasing the fuck out of Sasuke/poking fun or dirty talking to embarrass him a little
Dislikes/Triggers: uh the normal squicks, you’re probably good. Dislikes non-bi all of them. Dislikes feminization of Sasuke
Bonus for: Sasuke totally gets off a little on being embarrassed/dirty talked to/them talking about him. Also he’s stupidly in love with them.
Porn/No Porn: Porn, pls. Obvs
Claimed
@dimancheetoile
Wish: NaruSakuSai, their first time. Sakura is coming home from a mission where she almost died and the boys need to make sure she’s doing fine. Featuring lots of fluffiness, some worship and praise kink because Sakura deserves it.
Likes: Honestly, everything that deals with their respectives issues would be great. Sai probably doesn’t like being touched much, but loves touching them, Naruto needs to show his love, Sakura enjoys the praises and attention.
Dislikes/Triggers: non-con, in any way, shape or form. As long as the characters are mainly true to their canon selves, I’m good.
Bonus for: Naruto putting on lipstick to leave marks on Sakura and Sai + morning after cuddles.
Porn/No Porn: Porn. Lots of porn, pretty please with a shinobi on top.
Claimed
@fineillsignup
Wish: At some point in the Chuunin Exams arc (post-Forest of Death, but pre-Tsunade’s arrival) Sakura travels back in time to Kakashi’s attempt to rescue jinchuuriki Rin. She’s not much good fighting at that point but her sudden appearance causes enough confusion to allow a few crucial seconds such that Obito arrives while Rin is alive. And then…?
Likes: ObiSaku would be nice, no pairing is also fine.
Dislikes/Triggers: Cannibalism or humans being eaten generally.
Bonus for: 13 y/o Kakashi being a better teacher than 26 y/o Kakashi.
Porn/No Porn: Not unless you put in a big timeskip
Claimed
@will-zeke-thomson
Wish: I’d like to see a story about how Tenzou fathered a bunch of kids (doesn’t need to be from one woman or be romantically involved with one at all) because he wanted his wood release to be carried on to future generations. Just him as a father training and raising a bunch of kids which some (if not all) have his wood style.
Likes: I like family fluff and maybe a little angst but nothing too heavy.
Dislikes/Triggers: I dislike character bashing and any general cruelty but I’m not Triggered by anything but I don’t think that will be something for this type of thing to worry about.
Bonus for: Tenzou just being a good dad and doing his best and maybe Naruto helping train the kids and maybe even passing on the start of how to do the rasengan to them or the shadow clone to help them train.
Porn/No Porn: No porn for this please
Claimed
@pwnie3
Wish: Everyone in Konoha lost something on the day of the Kyuubi attack, and Genma Shiranui is no different. But not everyone can say they gained something. All of seventeen years old, he finds himself with a dead sister and her daughter Tenten to care for. Let’s hope he doesn’t screw this up.
Likes: Family fluff, obviously. Also Genma freaking out over how to parent.
Dislikes/Triggers: Just don’t be too gross I guess???
Bonus for: the Talk and Tenten’s first date.
Porn/No Porn: No porn please.
Claimed
@rezelis
Wish: Time travel with Kakashi peferably during the warring clans era or some form of supernatural creature thing.
Likes: dork!Madara, Gai. Angst in moderation. (Kakashi)
Dislikes/Triggers: Overly emberassing moments, like the level of romantic comedies. It can take me months to read such things.
Bonus for: troll!Kakashi
Porn/No Porn: No porn please.
Claimed
@stormwind13
Wish: Sakura is sent on a long term mission with Team Eight. What the mission is is up to the author. What I want is Sakura and Team Eight being awesome.
Likes: Sakura/Kiba, Hinata and Sakura friendship, Shino
Dislikes/Triggers: Non-con, dub-con, A/B/O
Bonus for: Sakura/Kiba
Porn/No Porn: No porn.
Claimed
@miss-fandoms-shakespeare
Wish: Genma and Raidou+the desk chuunin have many late nights in the tower, to make it better they play some music, one things leads to another and suddenly it's a dirty dancing competition! And it's all fun&games until a jounin coming in from a late mission walks in. The chuunin are embarrassed, but the jounin ends up joining in too???
Likes: Side-characters, dancing to cheesy early-2000s pop music, random fluff, multi-pairs/poly pairs (if you are up to writing it)
Dislikes/Triggers: Character hating, non-con, daddy kinks, etc
Bonus for: The jonin who walks in is Kakashi.
Porn/No Porn: Either is fine for me, it depends on how the story is going for you.

i hope im not late for submitting my request huhu. can i request founding trio (naruto) and minato with fem s/o who is not really talented in shinobi skills pls? thank u :)
Hey👋! Haven’t heard from you in a while. How are you? By the way, misunderstood this and did instead of the founding trio Team 7...
Tw: Yandere themes, unhealthy mindset, unhealthy relationship, possessiveness, obsessiveness, delusions, overprotective behavior, teasing, degrading, harsh behavior
s/o is not talented in shinobi skills
Naruto Uzumaki
🍜Naruto is a worshipper, meaning he holds his darling in a very high position. Doesn’t matter if they’re talented or not in shinobi skills. This guy will find at least a thousand other reasons that he loves and adores on his s/o. I can think of him as someone who appreciates and respects strength and talent when he sees it, but is also someone who wouldn’t want a scratch on you due to his worshipper tendencies.
🍜However, Naruto is still willing to train with you if you ask him too. He’s relatively easy to manipulate due to his delusions that you love him too. But he would never go over the limits with you and might actually go a bit too easy on you. He’s just scared that he might hurt you.
🍜If you should feel ashamed of how bad you are don’t or else Naruto will hold a speech about what he loves on you, how amazing you are, how beautiful you are, etc.
🍜But the fact that you’re so bad in shinobi skills makes him also extremely anxious if you go on missions. He would be naturally more nervous than others about this, but knowing that your talents are in all the other areas makes him even more afraid. So he would absolutely have a talk with either Tsunade or Kakashi, whoever is Hokage at that time, and express his worries and fears, pleading them to not give you anything too dangerous. I can even see him as someone who insists on helping to choose your missions so he can make sure that you come safely home.
Sasuke Uchiha
💙Sasuke is actually a fan of power so he would be most likely surprised and also slightly annoyed and angry when finding himself attracted to a rather weak darling. Worst one to react to this situation. Sasuke is the type to make fun of you for this, how cruel it is depends on his mood. When he’s in a bad mood then it’s honestly just degrading, when he’s in a good mood it’s more like jokingly teasing. On the other hand he likes being in control and with someone that weak he has an easier time with making it even more clear who’s in charge here.
💙Sasuke is someone who would actually train with you without you having to ask. Don’t misunderstood this, though. He just does it because it’s honestly a bit embarrassing for him that you’re that weak. You might have expected it, but this guy won’t go easy on you at all and will push you to the limits and above. Even if you will look like fainting he’ll continue until you really collapse. If in a good mood he might go less rough on you.
💙Sasuke isn’t the best to comfort you when you feel down due to how terrible you are with your skills. More the type to tell you to not cry over such a thing and just train harder if you want to become stronger. If in a good mood he’ll just listen to you without saying anything before giving you some sort of physical comfort.
💙Sasuke wants you to fight due to his belief that with enough training and experience you wil become better with your skills. He expects something from you after all. But he is also someone who would make sure that you don’t face someone you can’t beat. Sasuke is someone who wants you to improve so he doesn’t have to feel too ashamed of you, but he would also make sure that you don’t become too strong or confident to question his authority.
Sakura Haruno
🌸Sakura is probably the best one to handle this situation because she can totally relate to her darling. She herself used to be not very skilled when she was younger.
🌸Sakura would definitely offer you to help you with training, wanting to support you and help you as good as she can. I can see her as someone who would go the slightest bit stricter with you, forcing you to give your best. She sees her younger self in you and knows that hard training can help in making someone stronger. She was trained by Tsunade and will show some similarities whilst training with you. But she would also make sure to always nurse you back to complete health after she’s finished with you, taking care of every scratch or bruise you might have gotten.
🌸Sakura would be a total sweetheart when it comes to comforting you. She’ll cheer you up, gift you flowers and will take you out on small dates to make you feel better. But she can also just sit down and listen if that’s what you currently need the most. And here again, she can totally feel you.
🌸Sakura knows the best that sometimes a hard mission is needed to force you out of your shell so she would be one of the most chill to let you go on missions that might look a bit too hard for you. But she also makes sure that you always have some capable teammates and that the rank of the mission isn’t too high. I think whoever is Hokage at that time, Tsunade or Kakashi, would actually even be fine if Sakura insists on helping with giving you missions. They know that she sees herself in you and wants to help you so you don’t feel as useless as she used too.
Minato Namikaze
⚡️Another total sweetheart. Minato would also be the type to tease you a bit about this. But the huge difference between him and Sasuke is that he never does it when he knows that you might misunderstand it and he also never means it badly. He doesn’t care that much if you’re strong or not, it doesn’t change the fact that he loves you.
⚡️Being a supporting man he would definitely be ready to help you if you ask him too. Minato is similar to Sakura someone who would go a bit harder on you, especially if he knows that you really want to become stronger. He wants to help you achieve that dream and out of respect and love for you he wouldn’t go easy on you. But he also wouldn’t go too hard on you, making sure to stop if he sees that you can’t continue anymore.
⚡️Another one who would know exactly how to make you feel better. There’s a good chance that you might feel even more depressed due to the fact that you’re together with the famous Yellow Flash from Konoha, the Hokage himself. Minato is someone who stays realistic, yet manages to choose his words wisely to not make you feel down and is also sure to emphasize that he loves you for who you are and not for your strength.
⚡️As mentioned, realistic. Missions are a way to help you improve your skills and just like with the training out of respect he wouldn’t give you easy missions. He is overprotective, but also knows that he would hurt your feelings if he gives you only C ranked missions. He would still choose the missions carefully, making sure that they’re challenging, yet still possible for you to master. But he also makes sure that your teammates will be able to handle the situation if it should get harder than he expected.

Jiraiya, Ibiki, and Iruka! Go!
Ooh, this is hard! Actuallyno, I just had an epiphany.
I gotta put this under a cut because it got reeeaaally long (who is still surprised?)
Slow burn with Jiraiya
I think, one of the most/only redeeming thingsabout Jiraiya is how he loves Tsunade. Idon’t remember if this was filler, but regardless, it was what made me like himas a character. He gives this speechwhere he says something like, “I love Tsunade, even knowing she doesn’t loveme back. I just want her to be happy, and soI want to do my best to make a world where she’ll be happy in.” Something likethat. I can’t remember exactly, but the thing I loved about it was that he didn’thate her/resent her for not loving him. He doesn’t think she owes him her love for being kind to her. Even after Dan died, he didn’t think that Tsunade had to love him back, he just wanted her to be happy—even if shenever loved him, even if it was at his expense. Like, that’s actual love. That’snone of this Nice Guy™ bullshit, that’s being a real person who really lovessomeone. Jiraiya has his flaws, forsure, and he’s made mistakes, but how he loves is definitely one of hisredeeming characteristics. In a strangeway, it’s what made me stop shipping JiraiTsu. Like, I love how ok he is with her never loving him back. His ‘reward’ in this isn’t eventually earningTsunade’s love, it’s just seeing her happy. And that’s a beautiful sentiment.
Since Jiraiya’s love for Tsunade is such a huge part of him,I think that a slow burn with him would be great. He doesn’t expect to fall in love with anyoneelse, because Tsunade is the only one for him. Plus, I can’t imagine any person knowing about his inability to respectwomen’s privacy as going “that’s the one for me.” He’s not really a catch in that way. I myself am a pervert (please refer to my#wowzawednesday tag lol) but people whoinfringe on other people’s privacy are not what I would consider a catch. Like,go watch some porn, get a dirty magazine, hell, go to a live sex show. But don’t go peeping at people who haven’tgiven you permission to peep at them. Sowe’d both start off not really wanting to be with the other.
Idk what would happen next. I’d probably start to see him differently once I heard the ‘I loveTsunade speech.’ He’d probably fall in love with me because I’d teach him howto perv in acceptable ways haha. Ok,maybe not. But we would perv it outtogether, maybe get in an unintentional competition for the Super Pervert title(I can see this accidentally happening ahaha). Honestly, we might bond over Icha Icha (because I couldn’t live in a world without smut, and without fanfiction I feel like Icha Icha would be my best bet lol). I’d offer him pointers. He’d ask if I wanted to give him a hands on lesson. We’d continue to flirt until one day we’d both realise that we stopped pretending and were actually flirting. Then, it’s only a matter of time lol.
Fake dating with Ibiki
Do you know how hilarious it would be to fake date Ibiki? He totally would not want to do it. “Find someone prettier,” he’d grunt. But then, it’s for the intel, Ibi-kun~ “Don’t call me that.” But Ibi-kun, I’m just getting into character. “I didn’t agree to that.” You’re so cute when you’re grumpy, Ibi-kun. “I’m not grumpy, this is my face.” And what a cute face you’ve got! He would be so frustrated with me ahaha. Convincing him would be the hardest part. But once he agreed (or was forced into it) he would be the best. Why? Because he’d be all psychological about it. This would be some mastermind fake dating shit.
It would start as a secret. “No one would believe I openly started dating someone.” And then it would stay a secret for a long time. “No one would believe I would get caught secretly dating someone.” And it would be like but then why??? Are we??? Going on??? Secret??? Dates??? If??? No one??? Knows??? And it would all be for like, really intense set up. Like, he’d teach me how to bake (I can bake already, but like, Ibiki is prob next level so he’d teach me how to bake better) and like, people would slowly notice that my baking had improved, though I would of course just brush it off, oh, you know, practice makes perfect! I listen to music all the time, and people might notice he has a radio in his office, which they can hear playing on very low volume when he’s doing his paperwork. It would be a bunch of little things, where we just purposefully and strategically slowly brushed off on each other.
And there would be strategic gifts. Ibiki gets me a trench coat. (I later find out that he has this fantasy of his s/o coming over to his house in the middle of the night, wearing a trench coat and heels and nothing else…I will be very happy to act out that scenario with him). .I get him a new bandana for his hitai-ate. It’s a deep, forest green, which almost looks black unless he’s standing in the sun. People notice it and ask him about the change. He just shrugs and says “the old one ripped.”
About six months into the relationship, we both very strategically put on a bit of weight (10lbs for me, 15 for him). It is very easy, with all the baking Ibiki does. My smile gets just a bit sharper. People can’t exactly point their finger on what’s different, but they definitely feel the change. Ibiki is seen smiling more frequently. It’s a pretty off-putting smile, and it coincides with the newest addition to the T&I department, so people brush it off as him being a sadist. Anko is very slightly suspicious that something is going on. Anko is always suspicious. No one thinks anything of it.
And still, no one would know we were dating. Until like, we got legitimately engaged, because in this long, drawn out process of pretending to date (that would take like, a year, maybe longer) we’d totally fall in love (because we’d fake date so believingly that even we’d be convinced). And by then we’d have to send out wedding invitations to a couple of people we’re close to (definitely a small wedding). Anko would piece together all the small, subtle ways we had brushed off on each other and be like ‘it was so obvious, how could I have missed this???’ and Ibiki and I would smile secretively because of course it worked.
Enemies to lovers with Iruka
I picked this because, out of all the choices, this is the least expected. Like, who doesn’t likeIruka? How horrible of a person do Ihave to be for Iruka to hate me? I wantto make this even more hard, and say we’re not from different villages. And nothing about knowing each other when wewere kids (that’s also too easy, kids get into stupid fights).
So why do Irukaand I hate each other? I’m gonna gowith, he doesn’t approve of my glib attitude towards sex/perverted things. He’d probably catch me explaining to thepreteens about how babies are actually made, and why safe sex is important, andwhich things in Jiraiya’s books are possible and which things are just puremale fantasy. I like to think the rookie9 would come to me with all their sex questions. It would be hilarious. Iruka would hate all of that (and how I critiquedNaruto and Konohamaru’s sexy jutsu instead of reprimanding them for exploring theirsexuality) and I get mad at him for being stuck up about it.
So maybe not enemies but definitely notfriends. I’d tell him he had a stick up his ass. He’d call me irresponsible and a bad influence. I’d read Icha Icha out loud in front of him. He’d turn red and try and confiscate mybook. I’d accuse him of being a closetpervert and taking the book so he doesn’t have to go into the store and buy onehimself. He’d turn even more red.
Basically, our relationship would involve me trying to embarrasshim with sex. Until he got fed up withme, and tried to act totally cool and unaffected by me. And of course it wouldn’t work. But maybe I’d tease him a bit too far, andcome on to him. Actually, I wouldprobably try to make him uncomfortable by being really over-the-top seductive(ie super cheesy and cliché) and he’d just… snap. Totally have enough of it. I’d be leaning too close to him, and he’djust kiss me. It would be a reallysloppy, but very hot kiss filled with frustration.
He would be totally embarrassed about itafterwards and probably avoid me. Thatkiss, of course, would make me realise I had feelings for him, and so I’d seekhim out and kiss him again. Then we’dstart dating, and our relationship wouldn’t change much (Iruka seems so fun totease I wouldn’t be able to help myself) but I do feel that, once he’s morecomfortable with me (and in private) he’d be more willing to tease back. Which I would find completely attractive (becausethat’s like, my secret weakness lol).
Thanks for sending this in! These were some really fun choices, especially since I’ve never really considered a relationship with them.
Up next is:
Sakumo/Madara/Kakashi (now done)
Izumo/Raido/Genma (also done)
Sakura/Ino/Temari
Put 3 characters in my inbox and I’ll tell you who I’d slow burn/fake date/enemies to lovers with
