February 6-10 is Feeding Tube Awareness Week!
Tumblr media
The beginning of February was selected because of its proximity to Valentine’s Day, because we love our feeding tubes. This is my first year as a tubie and I’m looking forward to learning more about feeding tubes and the conditions that necessitate them! I do love my tube, it saved my life!
I am an adult with a feeding tube, and a lot of the awareness and attention surrounding these medical devices is child focused. A lot of children depend on tube feeding to thrive, but there are plenty of disabled adults that depend on tube feeding as well! In 2017 there were approximately 438,000 people with feeding tubes in the US, and 60% of them are adults.
I have gastroparesis, which directly translates to paralysis of the stomach. My stomach doesn’t grind food the way it’s supposed to, and my pylorus sphincter at the bottom of my stomach doesn’t open well to pass food and liquids through. While gastroparesis has a range of impact and severity, I have a very severe case, and I am no longer able to eat or drink by mouth for nutrition. I am 100% tube fed. I went into starvation ketoacidosis prior to my placement.
Tube feeding, or enteral nutrition, has several different forms. There are nasal tubes and there are surgical tubes. Nasal tubes can go into your stomach (NG), duodenum (ND), or your jejunum (NJ) and are typically for short-term use. They can be used for acute illness and malnutrition, or to trial tolerance of enteral feeding. Surgical tubes go into your stomach (gastrostomy/G) jejunum (jejunostomy/J) or both (gastrojejunostomy/GJ) and they’re for chronic conditions and/or long-term use. I have a GJ tube and it looks like this:
Tumblr media
I have a GJ tube so that I can bypass my paralyzed stomach and feed directly into my intestine. I can also drain stomach contents from the gastric port, which allows me to drink liquids and drain them out before they make me sick. Different people will have different tubes depending on their diagnosis and prognosis! Some people have one form of tube, and others have separate G and J tubes.
There are over 400 conditions that can require tube feeding. Some of those include
Gastroparesis
Intestinal dysmotility
Cancer
Intestinal failure
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis)
Cerebral Palsy
Congenital/chromosomal conditions
Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
Several trisomy conditions
Prematurity
Other conditions not mentioned in the link above include
Hyperemesis gravadarium, severe nausea/vomiting during pregnancy to the point of significant weight loss and electrolyte imbalance
Acute trauma requiring bowel rest
Eating disorders
This week, I want to promote visibility for disabled adults with feeding tubes. I didn’t know anything about enteral nutrition until I got sick. Once I had a confirmed diagnosis of gastroparesis, the reality that I was facing forced me to learn and adapt quickly to a completely life changing treatment. I know there are other adults like me, as well as tubie adults that used to be a child with a tube!

If the world were different and people loved people the size of cars, you best believe I'd be eating enough to feed 20 people every day.
I'd weigh more than my own bed, need attending to by feeders whenever I even felt the slightest bit hungry 🤤
Stuffed full to the brim every second of the day.
Surrounded by trays of food, full fat and cream filled, just sugary treats being shovelled into my fat mouth.
Just pre-dinner thoughts 💞

A commission for @/tas_cinderace over on twitter.
Tas gets the Gag treatment and learns how a small tapir can bully you into gaining 1000lbs~
(always a pleasure when I get to draw Gag in their element in a commission~)

I’m creating an informational series on tube feeding on my Instagram @ paralyzedguts and I’d like to get some questions and perceptions from orally fed people on tube feeding! I’d like to create something like a FAQ and a common misconceptions post about enteral nutrition.
Tell me in the tags what you know (or think you know) about feeding tubes! Do you have a feeding tube? If so what kind? You can shoot me an ask as well.
I have a GJ (gastrojejunostomy) tube for gastroparesis. I take all my nutrition through the tube (100% tube fed).

A silhouette of a human demonstrating multiple routes of nutrition.
The person has a pink bottle with a route line going through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach to represent oral nutrition.
They have a grey feed bag with multiple route lines to represent enteral nutrition. One from the bag in the nose, down the esophagus and into the stomach representing an NG (nasal-gastric) tube. Another from the bag into the stomach, representing a G (gastrostomy) tube. And a third from the bag to the intestine, representing a J (jejunostomy) tube.
They have an orange parenteral bag with two route lines. The first from the bag to the person’s arm, representing total or partial parenteral nutrition via a PICC line. The second one from the bag to the person’s heart, representing TPN/PPN via a port.

Hi everyone!
Do you or someone you know use tube feed? Having an issue with current shortages or just need something less expensive?
The following formula can be used temporarily or permanently (if using permanently add a daily multivitamin).
For one serving:
1/2 cup overcooked peas
1/2 cup overcooked rice
3 tablespoons peanut butter
Flavorings as desired (cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, banana, etc…)
Cook peas and rice with about 1.5 as much water as called for in the preparation and cook long enough for things to get really mushy. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend. If you’re using a cheap blender you may want to microwave the peanut butter first so it’s more liquid. If this comes out too thick, add some water to thin it out.
If you are putting this down a corpak you’ll need a more expensive blender (like a ninja, nutribullet, or vitamix) or you’ll need to strain it through a sieve in case there are chunks.
One serving contains about 500 calories, 22g protein, 50g carbs, and 24g fat in about 300mL of formula (about 1.6cal/mL). Assuming 4 servings a day, you can get the ingredients for about $10/3days.

Someone started calling and ruined my perfect video☠️😰 phone almost went into the tub!
I am also selling access to all of my older content from the past years for 15$. It has multiple stuffing sessions that last 15mins. Plus lots of my content that disappeared due to YouTube ban ham.
🐷❤️

The thought of having a belly big enough that it spills over your lap like fresh dough is enough to make me- ...I won't finish that thought 👀💧

mmm, good thoughts.
The tube slides down your throat effortlessly, and you're still half asleep, so out of it you're dozing off again before you even process what's happening. A gentle scratch under your chin and a soft pat send you right back into dreamland where you fantasize about devouring a feast fit for a king, servants doting on your every need.
Meanwhile your stomach is being filled with thick, viscous shake, the flow rate is slow enough that you're still dozing away when you pass from full to stuffed to overstuffed. Ounce by ounce you've gone far past your comfortable limits, but it happened so slowly it couldn't rouse you from your slumber.
When you do wake, it's to the sound of the pump straining and a sharp pain in your belly. You're more full than you have ever been in your life, and your skin is covered in angry red marks, stretched so thin it feels like you're about to burst at the seams with every shallow labored breath. A stuffed burp provides only a moments relief before the pump packs the freed up space with more fattening mix.
You try to reach over and shut it off to give yourself some time to digest the mass of calorie rich sludge weighing down your middle, but it's so heavy and the switch is so far away. Your muscles burn and you feel like you're going to pop after less than a minute of futile struggle and you flop back into the divot you carved into your mattress while you slept. All your efforts accomplish is coaxing up another belch that the pump dutifully refills with more shake.
You look over at the clock in desperation, but it only confirms your fears, I've already left for the day, and it will be hours of stuffed agony before I return to finally end your feeding. You rub your belly and find it doesn't even wobble or give, every inch of space is packed tightly with cold, rich, shake. The temperature at least helps to numb the pain of being stuffed to the gills, but you still feel like any sudden movement will pop you like an overripe tomato.
It feels like you spend days trapped like this, the occasional belch affording you precious seconds of relief before you are packed tight as a drum again, but it's only a few hours before I return and flick the switch to end the torture. It's hours more of digestion, belly rubs, and soft praise for how good you did, holding all those calories in before you finally digest enough to sit up and assess the damage.
You feel like you're buried in new flab, everything is so much thicker and softer, from your belly and thighs to your arms and face, there is a plush softness that wasn't there yesterday, and to your surprise, a new hunger as well. You can still feel gallons of shake settling heavily in your gut, but your stomach has been stretched like putty, and craves the fullness it had for so many hours. Already, you can tell that your new role of "shake tank" is one you will fit right in to. No need to worry about anything other than living the best life a calorie balloon could.
Hhhhhh... ~///~
If I have the strength to sit up after this, even after digesting enough to have the -room- to sit up, that would be a small miracle.
