A woman has been found guilty of taking a three-year-old British child to Kenya for female genital mutilation (FGM).
Amina Noor, 39, is the first person to be convicted of assisting a non-UK person to perform FGM.
Noor, from Harrow in north-west London, took the child to a private house for the procedure in 2006.
She had told the Old Bailey the mutilation is done for cultural reasons and was a procedure she herself had undergone as a child.
Noor, who was born in Somalia but has British citizenship, will be sentenced on 20 December.
It was only in 2015 that the girl - who is now aged 21 and who cannot be identified - confided to a schoolteacher that she had suffered FGM and police were informed.
Following an examination at University College Hospital in 2019 it was found that the girl's clitoris had been completely removed.
'No threats'
Giving evidence at her trial, Noor claimed she had come under cultural pressure to have the procedure performed.
Noor told her trial that she and another woman had taken the child in a tuk-tuk vehicle and she had been told to wait outside a house.
She claimed that she had only expected the girl's genitals to be "touched" in a way that would cause them to bleed.
However, the prosecution said the jury could be sure the defendant knew that an act of FGM was to be performed - whether or not that was the removal of the girl's clitoris or some form of physical injury for which there was no medical purpose.
Prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said Noor had repeatedly denied to police that she had been threatened to force her to agree to the procedure.
"She was asked three times if she had been threatened and three times she said there were no threats," Ms Heer said.
But in her defence Noor claimed she feared being "disowned and cursed" by the community if she did not hand over the girl.
The prosecution also drew attention to the defendant's behaviour at the time the FGM was carried out - for example, she had not asked whether the people involved were doctors or insisted on being present for the procedure.
FGM is a practice that is very widespread among the Somali community in East Africa, the court heard, with United Nations figures suggesting that 94% of women of Somali origin living in Kenya have undergone the procedure.

Hi, have you watched Harry Potter? If so, what do you think HP Avatar AU would look like? (I mean, for example, houses at Hogwarts, maybe blood statutes of the Sully family, Quaritch-Socorro family, Metkayina)
Hello, I used to be a huge Harry Potter fan actually. I've read the books multiple times, can recite some of the movies word for word and nearly cried when I got to go to the Wizarding World at Universal Studios. But due to J.K. Rowling being a disgusting transphobe, I've really fallen out of love with the series.
I never want to ignore/give a bad answer to someone's question though because I know how hard it can be to ask sometime (at least from my experience. I agonize over every word when I ask other questions) so I will do my best to give a detailed answer for you.
For simplicity I'm going to say everyone goes to Hogwarts but if I was writing this as a fan fic I'd actually have everyone going to different schools. Or at least the adults and then maybe they all move to London for work so all the kids then go to Hogwarts. Or just everyones an exchange student. But I'd have Quaritch and Jake going to Ilvermorny, Neytiri going to Uagadou, and Ronal and Tonowari going to Castelobruxo.
So I'm going to say that all full blooded Na'vi are pure bloods, making all the Metkayina's and Neytiri pure blooded.
Jake would be muggle born making Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuk half bloods
Grace was one of Jake and Neytiri's professors at Hogwarts. I can't pick the subject. I'm between, Herbology, Astrology, or Muggle studies. You choose. But Grace would also be muggle born, so Kiri would be half blooded.
I actually don't think Quaritch would be a death eater. I see him more as a hard line Auror who goes to far and purposely kills dark wizards until his apprentice Jake catches him and turns him in getting him sent to Azkaban. Quaritch would also be a half blood, making Spider a half blood. I'm on the fence about making Spider a squib because on the one hand it make sense for his character but on the other hand I don't want him to be because I want good thing for him. So maybe instead he's outcasted because his dad's a criminal.
As for houses:
Jake: Gryffindor
Neytiri: Slytherin
Neteyam: Hufflepuff
Lo'ak: Gryffindor
Kiri: Ravenclaw
Tuk: Hufflepuff (this one was tough because she's so little. Could have also gone Gryffindor)
Spider: Hufflepuff
Quaritch: Hufflepuff (If you disagree and think he should be in Slytherin because he's the villain then you can fight me. (I mean fight me to all the other people reading this not you specifically anon 💙) Slytherin's aren't automatically villains, and I'd say one of Quaritch's most prominent character traits is loyalty to both his cause and the people closest to him.)
Grace: Ravenclaw
Ronal: Gryffindor
Tonowari: Ravenclaw
Aonung: Slytherin
Tsireya: Ravenclaw
So those are my thoughts! Thank you for the question 💙

I saw Take That at Hyde Park last night. Some thoughts:
If Take That ever headline Glastonbury (I will keep praying for this), this is the sort of show they should do. They might as well send a video of the show to Michael Eavis now because this was Piramid Stage worthy. I cannot stress enough that they are the best live band Britain has to offer.
That being said, I am never doing a show at Hyde Park again, jfc. (For the record: I said the same thing in 2016. But the stress! 15 minutes to get to the loo! 40 minutes to get from the park to the nearest tube station! 7 pounds for a bag of chips! Grass, everywhere!)
Them starting the show with The Flood absolutely threw me for a loop. Gorgeous arrangement, though.
Mark mentioning London Pride several times was cute.
Speaking of Pride, I still . . . dislike Howard for the whole transphobic-tweets-on-Twitter thing but seeing him within the context of the band made me soften towards him again. I think I can dislike him as a human being but love him as an artist??? 🤷
After the gig I nearly got hit by a tuk-tuk blaring Back For Good from its speakers on my way to Green Park station. An adventure.
LULU!!!!
I loved Mark’s fur coat at the start of the show and the white fur coats they wore for Relight.
Also, Mark’s hat.
Have I mentioned The Flood?
A lot of the songs sounded newer in ways that I couldn’t really put my finger on. There were some very subtle changes that made the songs sound almost reinvented.
I was sort of stood in front of Kim Gavin (the boys’ creative director who has been responsible for basically all their tours) and I looked over my shoulder at one point of the show to glance at him and he looked proud as fuck with the show he and the boys had created together. It was really nice to see.
The ballad bit of Could It Be Magic made me feel weirdly emotional??? I don’t know why???
Callum Scott was not necessary.
Never Forget is still my favourite song to experience live, in the world.
Pray is a close second.
Hold Up A Light and The Garden both deserve to be standard songs on their setlists. Both 10s.
I loved it when they read out some banners on the first row. 10/10 we need more of this pls.
Rule The World should have fireworks, always.
I’ve really missed the high after Take That concerts.

Tuk Tuk Photo Booth Hire
Hire A Tuk Tuk Photo Booth   You can add a touch of the exotic East to your event   Another cool, non dull booth. Our Indian Tuk Tuk (Rickshaw) hails from the state of Gujarat, and had been employed as a taxi before we obtained it and worked our magic to add it to our fleet of fun and unique photo booths. This classic richshaw adds a touch of the orient to your event, originally aimed at the Asian wedding market, we find that many Western couples have romantic memories of trips together in the likes of Thailand on a tuk tuk and book it for their weddings. Its also popular with oriental restaurants, indeed a chain of Thai restaurants regularly use it for their opening nights at new branches. Get a Tuk Tuk Quote Here... Rickshaw Photo Booth Hire Why settle for the same old boring booth in an oblong box, you can have so much more fun with one of our unique booths, that not only provide all the services you come to expect from a photo booth, but also act as a centrepiece and talking point at your events. Standard Photo Booth Extras •Oriental Themed Decoration •Box Of Fun Props •Booth Butler •Music System Playing Themed Music •Unlimited Use •Custom Themed Prints •Guest Book •Additional Package Of Print•High Quality Dye Sub Print System •Canon DSLR Camera •Asus Touchscreen Control System •Fun Booth Butler •Funky Themed Props •Online Gallery Of Images If Required •CD Of Prints After The Event This is an industry leading combination far superior to some of the inkjet and web cam based photo booths out there.Optional extras are available for our Tuk Tuk booth; •Additional Prints •Larger Print Sizes •External Screen With Slideshow •Custom Branding •Social Media Sharing This is a fabulous little booth if you want something a little more exotic than normal, it comes decorated with an Asian theme, but this can be altered to suit your requirements. The tuk tuk name comes from the sound the 2 stroke engines make, and is something that western visitors used rather than companies making them. SOCIAL MEDIA SHARING Our tuk tuk booth has a control system that can be linked to one of our social media tablets allowing guests to instantly share their images to social media, this includes Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and via email. For corporate clients this can include their branding, hashtags etc, or even a special offer or sales message. PERSONALISATION Our Tuk Tuk booth can be custom themed for corporate promotions, this can be as little as adding a company logo to the outside of the booth, through to a full vinyl wrap or respray to produce a fully customised promotional vehicle. The control system can be programmed to collect data, play a promotional message before taking photos and be altered to fit in with the corporate theme. For weddings and private use we can add extra ribbons and decoration to match a brides colour scheme TUK TUK Another in our range of iconic vehicle photo booths for hire. The motorised rickshaw is more commonly known over here as the tuk tuk, due to the noise that the 2 stroke engine makes. These little vehicles are used as taxis, delivery vehicles and transport all over the orient, India and Pakistan. Our example comes from the state of Gujarat and still carries its licence plates from the local authority there. WHERE CAN I HIRE A TUK TUK PHOTO BOOTH NEAR ME; We can supply one anywhere in the U.K. IS THIS A GENUINE TUK TUK; Yes from the state of Gujerat. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN USE IT; It seats 3, but additional guests can lean in from the sides. Hire a Tuk Tuk Photo Booth, in Scotland, London, The North East, The Midlands, Yorkshire, Lancashire and the rest of the U.K. and Europe, the Tuk Tuk is ideal for weddings, parties, university balls, military balls, exhibitions, corporate events, company fun days and more. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Hou Hanru, Cities on the Move (1997) addresses the complexities and contradictions of modernization found in the rapidly developing and increasingly globalized economies of Southeast Asia. Rirkrit Tiravanija is just one out of the 70 artists and architects that were invited to work at this exhibition originally located at Secession in Wien, Austria - although it has since traveled to several locations internationally, such as New York, London, Bangkok, and Denmark. The artists, all of which worked in and around Asia, attempted to map the hybrid manifestations of Asia urban modernization that resulted from rapid globalization and industrialization in the 20th and 21st centuries.
Tumblr media
In this exhibition, Tiravanija and another artist, Navin Rawanchaikul, collaborated on an installation which involved two tuk-tuk taxis. Tuk-tuks are three-wheel vehicles that are a constant presence on the streets of Bangkok and Thailand at large, and as a result have become a symbol of the creative potential within Asian urban culture suffering rapid growth and westernization. For the exhibition, one was parked inside the exhibition while the other was driven around the city. As the show has traveled, the taxis have been increasingly covered with layers of stickers, possibly from passerby on the street or visitors to the gallery.
Tumblr media
Also part of the exhibition was a giant painted Thai-style movie billboard, which “infiltrated the city environs bringing the urban landscape of Bangkok to the streets of Vienna" (Fogle 2016). For these parts of their installation, the artists collaborated with cinema painters and tuk-tuk producers to accurately replicate Thai urban culture/daily life both within the gallery spaces and outside in the surrounding areas. In turn, their contribution evokes Rem Koolhaas's notion of "Cities of Exacerbated Difference" (COEDs), where a rapidly expanding globalizing consumer economy sparks conflicts and contradictions in territories with specific cultural histories/practices (Fogle 2016).
Despite its relative international popularity, the Cities on the Move exhibition has received mixed reception. Due to how many specially created works have been included in the show, many have criticized it for being complicated, overwhelming, and slightly confusing. Regardless of the critique, Tiravanija’s contribution has paired curatorial displacement with the phenomenon of the counter-modernist development seen in Asian supercities as a result of global/transnational capitalism.

Yesterday, Wednesday, was my last day in Sri Lanka. Bit surreal writing that. The oppressive humidity I felt coming out of the airport that first night is still keen in my memory, can’t really believe almost 3 weeks have gone by.
What did I do yesterday… got up early, had breakfast. Heavy rain fell while I was at the restaurant but the skies cleared a bit after so I decided to risk it, and set off on a walk to Hikkaduwa. I’d bought postcards in Galle and picked up stamps in Ahangama - they were only 35 rupees per card which I was suspect about… it’s so cheap. I tried walking the whole way up the beach but unfortunately there are parts where rocks and sea or buildings block the route, so I weaved between beach and road.
Got to Hikkaduwa and went to the post office. Lady there said the cards and stamps were fine so here’s hoping they arrive in Aus in a couple of weeks. Not a lot to see or do in town. Turned back and went down the road in the hopes of finding a souvenir or something but most everything - cafes, shops, rental places - was closed. I can’t tell if it’s because it’s the end of the season or because tourism is still limited or both.
Was absolutely drenched in sweat again by the time I got back (even if it seems cooler it rarely actually is) so I rehydrated with a coconut and had a swim at the pool. Chilled there for a while before thinking I might try to find lunch outside the hotel. Went south this time but again, everything was shut. Ended up at a Cargills express (supermarket chain) buying snacks. They have these chilli, garlic, and pepper peanuts here that are really good. They’ve tided me over several times this trip.
Just before I left the hotel more rain had swept through. I think this is monsoon? Downpours interspersed with occasionally clearer weather? Or maybe it’s just the beginning of the wet so it’s not as severe…
Spent the afternoon in my room, pottering around and trying to get all my stuff in order. Had a call with a recruiter in London about potential job opportunities. Had another bath, because who knows when I’ll be able to do that again. One final cocktail by the beach but no sunset unfortunately, too cloudy. Dinner was a cashew nut curry (and several other side curries) which I’ve heard a lot about but hadn’t really seen advertised anywhere. It was okay. Tasty but not mind-blowing.
What to say about Sri Lanka on the whole…? Its landscape is stunning. So lush, so verdant. Palms laden with coconuts and banana trees heavy with fruit. Tiny squirrels zipping around tree trunks, monkeys clambering about in branches, lizards plodding along below. The tea plantations and cool crisp air a refreshing change from the congested and sometimes stifling cities. There are stray dogs everywhere, sometimes seen eating fried noodles or curry left out for them by nearby humans. A few stray cats too, less bolshy in their approach to being fed. Misty mornings in the mountains, before the sun comes up and beats down. Endless views across plains. The smell of coconut shells and other detritus burning by the side of the road.
By the coast, the sea stretches on forever. Crows roost in the palms and screech as storms roll in. Sunsets glow pink and orange over the water. Fishermen perch above the water, waiting for a bite.
Ubiquitous blue tuk tuks that blast a tinny, mechanical version of Fur Elise to let the neighbourhood they’re around and selling bread. Death notices plastered on telegraph poles with a black and white photo of the deceased (I guess it’s their equivalent of the newspaper). How small the island is and how close cities and towns are, but how long it takes to travel between them on narrow and rarely straight roads shared by buses with drivers going like bats out of hell, struggling tuk tuks, scooters carrying families of four or five, and old men pedalling along on their fixie bikes. The liberal use of tooting horns - Louise made a good point, to never purchase a property on a blind corner in south-east Asia. Not that this is my future but it’s worth bearing in mind, so as not to hear that crap all night! Passing men and women saying hi, hello, where you from? Just curious and smiling most of the time. People’s warmth and hospitality, and pride. Their general relaxed approach. Other than the protesters, I never witnessed any agitation or anger or stress. No toe tapping waiting in line, no rush to pay, no raised voices, no one hurrying or in a bad mood. Not to say those people weren’t around, I’m sure they were, and I doubt anyone wants to project their concerns onto tourists… but to me the prevailing feeling was one of general calm - despite everything. Udi must be in his 40s and he didn’t have a grey hair. Neither did the driver’s assistant, who has a 19 year old… Udi laughed as he told us he had to sell his car during the pandemic “to survive.” You had to laugh with him or you’d cry.
Sitting at the airport now, waiting to board. My driver sped from Hikkaduwa to Colombo, I arrived before check in for my flight even opened. I’ve had so much time to kill. Had one last dosa for breakfast. The antithesis of my experience at Sydney, for which I am grateful. Feeling a bit emotional that this part of my trip is coming to an end and hopeful that Sri Lanka comes out of everything okay, but I’m not sure. Very excited for the Middle East. A long day of travel ahead.
