I'm planning to join a local League soon, but I don't know many of the local Pokemon or gyms. I'm in Northern MS BTW

Northern Mississippi has a few gyms. Depending on what kind of challenge you're looking for, you might consider facing:

Oxford ghost-type gym

The Oxford gym is run in part by Ole Miss, so its gym trainers are mainly college students. Previously a grass-type gym, it was revitalized by a gym leader who made extensive use of Gourgeist and Trevenant, prompting the switch over to a ghost-type gym - the only one in Mississippi.

2. Tupelo electric-type gym

While the Tupelo gym is a relatively small one, it's definitely not easy. The gym centers around music, and the leader is a retired rock singer who uses a formidable Electivire.

3. Southaven normal-type gym

Mississippi's newest gym, this is also the state's biggest, and is renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities. Trainers from nearby Memphis often come to train their Pokemon here, or simply to lounge by the gym's pool. A team of four gym leaders run the gym, with which one a challenger faces determined by how many badges they already have and how well they fare against the gym trainers.
