Ah, there are several ways I'd love to do this, and there's so many different ways it could be mashed up!

The Grishaverse with daemons is the easiest, but then I'd have to try and find everyone the perfect daemon. Animal symbology!!!

Or Alina and Mal growing up at Jordan College, with Aleksander Morozov as her aloof and volatile guardian and Baghra as the mysterious benefactress who whisks Alina away after Mal is abducted. I don't know at the moment how all the other Grishaverse characters fit in save that Jesper is the Lee Scoresby equivalent and Kaz and Inej are Chevalier Tialys and Lady Salmakia. Fight me.

Or, if we wanted to get really complicated, a bit more of a mashup between the worlds, with both Grisha powers and daemons. The persecution of the Grisha combined with the treatment of those at the mercy of the General Oblation Board. Are the Grisha like the witches of His Dark Materials? If so, are they born or do they become? What forms does your daemon tend to take if you are Grisha? What are the attitudes towards daemons, if Grisha are hunted? Is the Fold more than just darkness incarnate, something that threatens to devour all knowledge and goodness? Are the angels the Small Science made incarnate? Who, then, is the Maker? The religion of it all. And how could I make it so that Aleksander is Metatron???

In Turkic mythology, a divine being that gives the God power and inspiration to create is mentioned. It's portrayed as a woman, the Head Goddess, who's behind of all the creation of the world and the humanity.

AĞ ANA: The great being whose name is most commonly found in the legend of creation, an angel and a protective spirit.

It's believed that even before earth and sky had been created, Ağ Ana had existed and wandered at the imaginary sky. She gave soul to everything that is beginning of the life, and carried the weight of circle of life on her shoulders. She, at the beginning of life, had gathered all the power in herself. According to Altai Turks belief, she's a woman that's been formed of light. (Her existence is from light.) And she gave God Ülgen the power and inspiration to create.

She's been called both Ağ Ana and Ulu Ağ Ana. "Ulu" has "great" or "sacred" meanings. It's been presumed that "Ağ" has a meaning same as "Ak" which means "white" (but mostly used as the meaning of purity). "Ana" means "mother" and it's commonly used in goddesses' names. The part above adds that she has a holy face and a holy soul.

In Yakuts, giving name to the child is one of Ulu Ana's duties. According to Turkic creation mythology,

... with the order of Ağ Ana, God Ülgen said "may be earth be created!" and earth had been created. Then he said "may sky be created!" and sky had been created.

She has the Mountain Spirit, and thus she's also a figure that's believed to protect mountains and homeland (yurt).

In Teleuts, this holy mother's name is "Ak Ene" (Ağ Ana). She's also called "Ene-yayaçı", which means "mother who creates".

Pathologic and the Town's Russianness: 1

For part 1, let's explore the naming conventions Pathologic uses, and whether its Town characters have Russian surnames.

The names of the townsfolk are remarkably non-Russian

The Kin, of course, have their names in their own Steppe language, which is a conlang that Ice Pick Lodge conscructed based on Mongolic and Turkic (mostly Buryat) tongues. So, no questions with that.

But what about the Town itself, and the names of the people living in it?

For starters, it must be noted that the foundational workings of surnames in Russian are pretty much the same as in most European languages: a surname denotes someone's ancestor's relation to craft (such as the most common surname both in English - Smith, and in Russian - Kuznetsov, meaning exactly the same), kin, appearance feature, or other such concept.

As an inflected language, however, Russian adds special suffixes to its usual roots to arrive at surnames. The most well-known of them is, of course, -ov. In the example above it turns kuznets (smith, as an occupation) into Kuznetsov (Smith, as a surname). It is also used to form the archetypical Russian surname: Ivanov, that is, related to Ivan. It is, however, by far not the only suffix used, and there are multiple others: -in, -tsyn, -shyn, -ev, -tsev, -y, and more.

Most of these allow to construct feminine forms by simple addition of the ending -a (Saburov - Saburova); but some are more complex (Olgimsky - Olgimskaya). Such complexity usually marks suffixes used in other Slavic tongues: -y in particular is often seen in Belorussian and Polish.

With all that in mind, let's explore the names we find in the Town-on-Gokhon. And the thing immediately striking is just how little surnames formed from Russian roots and Russian suffixes there are.

First, there are obviously non-Russian surnames, such as Ravel, Block, Longin, Feugel, Yan, Croy. Most of them appear to come from other European languages.

Is that probable for a Russian Empire stand-in? Yes. It was a multinational state, and there were enough Europeans among the elite for Vyazemsky to bemoan in mid-XIX century that "the Russian God" is "God whose favour falls on Germans". (Then again, hardly surprising under the Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov dynasty, ethnically German and only taking German wives for generations, despite ruling Russia).

Then, there are the surnames with Russian suffixes: Saburov, Stamatin, Lyuricheva, Olgymsky, Dankovsky. But the thing is, none of these have Russian roots! Saburov is based on Tatar (patient, hardy); Stamatin on Greek (persistent, stable); Lyuricheva, Olgymsky and Dankovsky are Slavic-sounding, but appear to be unique to the game's characters. As a side note here, Dankovsky is apparently based on a name from Gorky's Old Izergiel (Danko, a brave who ripped his own heart out to light the way for the rest of his peope).

Now, is that probable? It's stretching the suspension of disbelief a bit. Yes, there had been Tatars among the Russian elite since before the day Kazan was conquered by Moscow, which reflected in their surnames. Yes, priesthood surnames could include Greek roots. And yes, the Western Slavs were also in the Empire. But it's hard to imagine all of these coinciding to entirely drown out the surnames based on Russian roots!

All in all, this distribution sounds like a conscious artistic choice, making such an assemblage less likely for historic Eastern Europe rather than Central one.

As a sort of postscript, for these who could be bothered to read this far down. There's an interesting quirk about the female surnames in the game: in Russian, unless a surname ends with one of the Russian suffixes, it retains its basic form (same as the masculine) even when women use it. Thus, Lara's surname is Ravel, same as her father's; same thing with Croy. But there's a curious exception: the Kains. Their surname is obviously based on the eponymous Biblical character, Cain. The only thing is, Cain is not a Russian word, and thus the women of the family should apparently still have the surname Kain. Yet they do not, they use Kaina - which suggests that their surname uses the Russian suffix -in: just someone related to something called Ka-, perfectly normal, totally a word, no primordial killers in sight.

Whether that is simple wordplay, a way to show the lineage deeply assimilated, a way to take the focus off the Biblical relation, or anything else, is up to the reader to decide.

Meanings of names. Batim/Batdr edition!

Hello there! I'm back with another name meanings list! This time it's the Bendy verse, because it was immortalized (Hehe heh get it) yet again, and I couldn't be more excited.

So! I will be doing the primary characters for both games, BUT not all of them. I’ll be doing all the folks from Batim, since there aren’t as many as in Batdr, which added a TON of new characters and I for the live of me can't do them all. It would take me an eternity, so there... So, I won’t do those who had like one tape or memo. Sorry. I also will not be including characters from the comics or the books. Yeah. (but I can do a part 2 if you guys want ehehehehe)

Let's go!

Toons (not doing the corrupted versions, they’re technically the same)

Bendy. I'm pretty sure that Meatly made it up from the name of some editing program. Something something Bender, not sure.

Boris. From a Bulgar Turkic name, also recorded as Bogoris, perhaps meaning "short" or "wolf" or "snow leopard". Hey! Literally a wolf!

Alice. From the Old French name Aalis, a short form of Adelais, itself a short form of the Germanic name Adalheidis, which means "noble type". Hmm, I like it! Fits her. I’m obviously also counting Twisted Alice and Allison Angel. They all have the same name.

Charley (one of my favourite characters hehehehe). Diminutive form of Charles, which means  "man". Literally. Just man. MAN. That’s it. I guess that fits... Charley is, after all, A MALE. Yeah.

Barley. Means “grower of barley”. Lmao. Just like that.

Edgar.  Derived from the Old English elements ead "wealth, fortune" and gar "spear". I mean... I guess? He has nothing to do with spears, but he’s got fangs. They’re sharp. Spears are sharp.

Humans (from here on going in alphabet order)

Allison Pendle. Norman French diminutive of Aalis, so basically the same as Alice. Cool! She’s very sweet, so it fits for her as well!

Audrey Drew (putting her here because I don’t really count her as an ink entity). Medieval diminutive of Æðelþryð, which is derived from the Old English elements æðel "noble" and þryð "strength". Oh, she sure is strong! 

Bertrum Piedmont. Means "bright raven", derived from the Germanic element beraht "bright" combined with hramn "raven". Uhhmm. Ooook then. Not sure where the raven comes from.

Daniel ”Buddy” Lewek. From the Hebrew name דָּנִיֵּאל (Daniyyel), meaning "God is my judge". Nuuuu, Buddy:(      I still feel very bad for him... Man, poor guy.

Grant Cohen. From an English and Scottish surname that was derived from Norman French grand meaning "great, large". Well, his boss had GRANT plans for the studio (please don’t hurt me, I know the pun is bad).

Henry Stein (the man!). From the Germanic name Heimirich meaning "home ruler", composed of the elements heim "home" and ric "ruler". OOOOHH, i love it! Considering he is the actual creator of Bendy, he technically is the ruler!

Jack Fain. Derived from Jackin (earlier Jankin), a medieval diminutive of John, which itself is derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan) meaning "Yahweh is gracious". Maybe Jack is jewish? It’s unlikely, but I literally don’t know what to say here.

Joey Dr(ew). Diminutive of Joseph, which was from the Hebrew name יוֹסֵף (Yosef), meaning "he will add". Endless torment, that’s what he’ll add. Ugh, poor Henry.

Lacie Benton. Variant of Lacy. From a surname that was derived from Lassy, the name of a town in Normandy. I couldn’t really find anything else, so...I guess?

Nathan Arch Sr. From the Hebrew name נָתָן (Natan) meaning "he gave". Wha-  what’d he give? A new chance for Bendy to be relevant again? Idk, really.

Nathan ”Wilson” Arch Jr (please don’t hurt me, but I kinda like him as a villain... Like, yeah, he’s creepy as all heck, but isn’t that kinda the point? So there, I said it). I will be doing his moniker, since duh. The name comes from an English surname meaning "son of William". Eeeehhhh, almost fits, just replace William with Nathan.

Norman Polk (eeeeyyyy it’s ma dude!). From an old Germanic byname meaning "northman", referring to a viking. Now that’s interesting. I can’t tell English accents apart very well, but I saw someone say he’s got a southern accent. And then there’s NORTHman. Hmmmm.

Sammy Lawrence. Diminutive of Samuel, coming from the Hebrew name שְׁמוּאֵל (Shemu'el), which could mean either "name of God" or "God has heard". Lmao, I guess his god really did hear him. And decided to fucking murder him.

Shawn Flynn.  Anglicized form of Seán, which on itself is the Irish form of John, so basically the same as Jack.

Susie Campbell. Diminutive of Susan. This was derived from the Hebrew word שׁוֹשָׁן (shoshan) meaning "lily" (in modern Hebrew this also means "rose"), perhaps ultimately from Egyptian sšn "lotus". Oh, maybe those are her favourite flowers!

Thomas Connor. Greek form of the Aramaic name תָּאוֹמָא (Ta'oma') meaning "twin". OH he and Buddy are technically twins! Or, well, clones.

Wally Franks. Diminutive of Walter, which comes from a Germanic name meaning "ruler of the army", composed of the elements wald "rule" and hari "army". Pffft, he’s the ruler of the army that got OUTTA THE STUDIO, yeah ok it fits.

Ink entities (not doing Sammy, Jack and Norman for obvious reasons)

Betty. Diminutive of Elizabeth. From Ἐλισάβετ (Elisabet), the Greek form of the Hebrew name אֱלִישֶׁבַע ('Elisheva') meaning "my God is an oath". The heck- did she turn into Sammy?

Big Steve. Short form of Steven, which derives from the Greek name Στέφανος (Stephanos) meaning "crown, wreath". Uhh, I guess? Is there something that we have yet to discover?

Heidi. German diminutive of Adelheid, which means "noble type", from the French form of the Germanic name Adalheidis. Damn, what’s with all the nobles? Unrelated, but I love her bowtie.

Porter. From an occupational English surname meaning "doorkeeper". Oooohh, ok then, he technically is one.

And that’s it! Whew, took me quite some time. Please do tell me if you want a part two with the other folks! I’m not sure, when (and if) I’ll make it, we’l have to see.

The Kushans were descended from the Yuezhi, a Tocharian-speaking (Indo-European) people originating from today's Xinjiang (Eastern Turkestan) region, who were pushed southwards by the invading Hunnic-Turkic tribes, thereby migrating to Afghanistan and Pakistan regions during the middle of 1st century AD where the Sakas (Scythians) and Parthians dominated/ruled. As the new rulers, the Kushans were able to successfully create a vast and prosperous empire, which at its peak stretched from Central Asia to northwest India, with the capital mostly in Purushapura (Peshawar).

Gandharan Civilization blossomed under the Kushans, with great progress made in the arts, architecture, and sciences. The Kushan Empire's economy greatly benefited from trade since it was in the middle of the Silk Route. Their acceptance and tolerance of many different religions and ethnic groups within their empire welcomed the fusion of diverse ideas/traditions, such as the creation of Greco-Buddhist art styles. Even though the Kushan rulers were culturally and religiously mostly Iranian, many other religions were also patronized or embraced. For example, the famous Kushan king, Kanishka, adopted Buddhism.

The Kushan religious pantheon is extremely varied, as revealed by their coins, on which about 30 different gods appear, belonging to the Hellenistic, the Iranian, and to a lesser extent the Indic world. Bactrian, an Iranian language and the official language of their empire, was mostly used but written in the Greek script.

Representation of entities from Greek mythology and Hellenistic syncretism on coinage are: Helios, Hephaistos, Selene, Anemos, Heracles, and Sarapis. The Indic entities represented on coinage include: Buddha, bodhisattava Maitreya, Mahasena, Skanda Kumara, Shakyamuni Buddha. The Iranian entities depicted on coinage include: Ashi Vanghuhi, Asha Vahishta, Atar, Khwarenah, Drvaspa, Vohu Manah, Mah, Mithra, Mazda vana, Aredvi Sura Anahita, Vata, Oxus, Ahura Mazda, Tir. I'd talked about drawing Asena interacting with @journey-to-the-au / @kaijufluffs 's Mama Sun from Wukong's Mama AU and I finally had the motivation to draw them!

Also drew their version of the (baby) Six Eared Macaque hugging Asena and a hug between MY Six Eared Macaque and Asena.

Context: in my post-jttw x mythology story, Asena (a mythological wolf in Turkic myth and the ancestor of the Ashina Clan/Gohturk people) is given a revived Six Eared Macaque by a death god from her pantheon as an apology for the death of her eldest daughter. Despite a tense beginning, the two grow to view each other as family, with Asena giving him his own name (Shi Lang). I'm still working on more ideas for their full dynamic but that's the basic idea.
