hi! i love your brisbane meshi au and saw you mention that you headcanon senshi as japanese-iranian. genuinely curious, is there a reason why?

a lot of the reasons i read him as japanese are most likely little bits of cultural influence from miss ryoko herself but i still think its fun to tack them onto his characterisation (like the type of food he makes and his quiet, self-sufficient style of masculinity)

the iranian part mainly comes from how hes drawn in modern au sketches/with his helmet off hehee i was reading the ddh volumes in between chapters and it rly struck me how much he looks like a very beautiful middle-eastern man LOL

i still do feel like hoyo fumbled a bit with sumeru... even if yes, they DO their research on cultures to some extent i dont know how smart was it to combine so many middle eastern influences into one nation when the others had a set image to all of them. i was soo excited that we were gonna get some turkish representation too since that barely happens -in a media i like no less- and all we got were some npc names. and a few dishes lmao

yeah i think it came out messy in the end. fontaine is in a bit of a weird place also in my opinion since it doesn't just represent france either, i have noticed a lot of general european influences, some irish/scottish/english especially and so on. but the sumeru case is still upsetting to me too, ever since it came out. it was coincidentally around the time i took my break. i would have loved to see it more refined and more thought put into different parts of the region maybe focusing on representing specific cultures (yknow kinda like a real life region!) rather than mix it all up. i think the same for fontaine as well although it would work just as well if it was only france

#not to bring up atla bc it's also my current special interest that came back from our childhood hehe But! that's a good example of using #real life cultural and ethnic influences very right #all the nations have one dedicated culture tehy are inspired by and draw some elements from but they are still in itself recognisable #and you can tell the difference. and it's done very beautifully while still remaining very unique and not just repackaging real life culture #oh and #our partner system is actually turkish too btw so i was actually showing them the foods i saw #but yeah it definitely feels a bit lackluster #don't get me started on the skintone thing as well it was a let down. don't care how many white genshin fans r gonna roll their eyes but #it is upsetting #and natlan coming up is also setting me up for more disappointment
