It's nearly here, Turn fandom!

For those that don't know, Turn Week consists of a week of daily prompts to help engage the Turn fandom in celebrating the show "Turn: Washington's Spies"! Every day starting July 1, this blog will post the day's theme for you to reblog and make posts about. Turn Week, Day 7: If I Could Change One Thing...

Aside from the obvious wish of getting all five seasons, it's too bad the show wasn't more character-driven rather than plot-driven. I understand why it was, and I still find it absolutely great and a comfort show, but I'm the type who watches for characters and their interactions. I felt robbed of these dynamics, in particular: Ben and his father, Nathaniel (they should've talked about Samuel sometime after 1x10); Ben and Sackett (I wanted more crazy!uncle x nephew-esque shenanigans); Ben and Samuel (it would've been way more impactful to see some brotherly flashbacks prior to his d.eath), and more of the Culpers in general. Even though they were best friends who grew up together (sans Townsend), it never really felt like it since no one ever truly reminisced or cracked inside jokes, nor behaved like close friends beyond the occasional quip (unless you count the Ben x Anna prank in 2x4). Granted, I understand that it's a time of w.ar and thus, levity isn't as common, but they are human, and it'd make sense for them to behave as such from time-to-time. It can't be b.usiness 24/7.

Secondly, every Culper had some form of t.rauma, so I really wish the show had delved into that beyond the surface. Here are some thoughts centering around the individual characters:

Ben: I wanted to see more of his struggle with faith. A man of God betrayed the Cause (Rev. Worthington), and then he shot him in cold b.lood. That assuredly messed with him, and his guilty conscience had to have suffered even more so once he discovered his own side was responsible for Sarah's husband's d.eath. Then when he learned Hale's last words had been warped for the sake of furthering the Cause, rather than his friend being truly remembered as Hale wished to be, Ben learned right then and there that history could and would be altered by people he admired (GWash) to justify the means -- himself included. The knowledge that he and his friends were more or less pawns undoubtedly added to his anger in S4, in particular, and I wanted to see a genuine struggle with all of the above rather than superficial scrapings.

Abe: After his imprisonment, he definitely should have suffered from some type of P.TSD, yet he more or less just "walked it off" after shaving his beard and cleaning away the grime. Most people can't recover from that type of event unscathed, so it would've been interesting to give Abe an actual character arc beyond a.dultery and his brief turn-around in S4.

Anna: The night she was attacked and had to s.tab/s.hoot that Queen's Ranger undoubtedly stained her for a long time. Maybe an allusion to night terrors or making her jumpy could've helped, rather than just turning it into a cliché girlboss moment.

Caleb: Arguably, Caleb got s.hafted the most of this group. He always struck me as more of a punchline rather than a real person, because comic relief characters are rarely multi-dimensional in terms of development. It's sad that just when the writers were finally giving him an arc, it was cut short and sped up to meet with the time constraints. I don't think it was a poorly done arc, per se, but naturally, I wish we could've seen it drawn out and given the proper time and dedication that was originally intended.

FAVORITE RELATIONSHIP/CHARACTER. OH NO.

Outing myself as a Sewlett defender right now. I doodled a pic for this. I love them so much none of you understand. They’re not enemies to lovers, they’re enemies to even worse enemies to sex havers to murdering each other in a show of love. They’re married. They’ve been divorced for 20 years and Hewlett took the kids. Simcoe is still paying child support- no wait, he killed the child. They want eachother dead but can’t kill the other. They secretly make out in the church.

This is the most married couple image I have ever seen and I wish they stayed friends but it’s ok

Simcoe has this really weird thing with Hewlett (and like everyone else) that he has to be the one to kill him. He wants Hewlett dead so badly that he literally tells his lackeys to kidnap him and bring him to the Lola Sex Tent so he can be the one to kill him. And if that’s not homoerotic, idk what is— oh wait, how about when Hewlett shoved a miscellaneous object into Simcoe’s mouth? Twice? Or when he stabbed Simcoe while Simcoe was making fun of his frostbit toe (gross)?

Getting Revenge On Hewlett has become so engrained into who Simcoe is as a person that he is literally willing to die when he realizes he’s lost. He gives Hewlett the permission to kill him because in his eyes, he’s earned it. But he also gets the last laugh, since in killing him Hewlett will become the same person he is— a senseless murderer. And Hewlett doesn’t kill him. It’s like an ultimate act of “fuck you, i’m better than you, and you’re embarrassing” to Simcoe and in that moment he’s literally broken Simcoe’s sense of self to the point where he starts crying.

That Is Gay As Hell.

Anyway the point is they’re married and divorced and in love with eachother and hate eachother. If you disagree with me you’re wrong

Turn Week Day 6: Fav ship or character

Hey I actually remembered to do this before the day ended

Favorite ship? I love JPEG (Andre x Peggy).

As soon as they put Andre and Peggy in the same room, I thought they should have gotten together. The class differences, the romance, the somewhat Pride & Prejudice vibe they kinda had; meeting in secret without a chaperone (scandalous!). The silly little doodles of Peggy. The flute. THE BRAID.

They always seemed genuinely in love with each other when they were on-screen together, and it wasn’t some kinda business transaction. “Don’t presume you know what it is to be me?” Both of them said that??? The parallels., I’m screaming to this day. Not to mention “We are married.”

Even when they were apart or doing spy stuff, they thought of each other, and how they could possibly get back together once the war had blown over. Andre literally offering to barter with Arnold to get Peggy back. Peggy literally putting up with the whole woo-Arnold plan just so she could see Andre again. Peggy being the last person Andre saw and thought about before he was executed. I’m very normal about this--

They wanted to have a future together that I totally would have wanted to see carried out, but alas, history is often disappointing.

I could be wrong in some of my points, but this is just my opinion hehe

 But I also love Annlett (Anna x Hewlett).

Turn week day 1: origin story!

This is probably going to be pretty simple, but like many I found Turn when I was going through Netflix in late 2019. (Bring it back, cowards).

I actually knew a little bit of turn when I followed @annastrxng wayyy back in the day when I started roleplaying on tumblr (on my main blog) and I was like, "Oh, I recognize the name of this show." Then I started to binge it over winter break. I fell in love with the characters, the setting, and the way turn just feels so different from other shows. Characters like Hewlett made me stick with the show because I really enjoyed seeing their stories unfold on screen. I then made my oc, Lydia, to be able to see how she would interact with my favorite characters. Then slowly over time, I got more involved with turn as the rpc grew, making me add more characters to write.

I hold the maybe unpopular opinion that TURN would’ve done just fine without a villain/primary antagonist. Benjamin’s crisis and the cause and fighting redcoats is enough to me and historically speaking there is no “right side” in any revolution, only a winning side and losing side. The American revolution, as all revolution(s) is complicated and as myself and Audrey (oc) will agree, it’s complicated. We’re still taking Ben’s side first and foremost though.

Day 3: favorite villain

Yeah you all know what i’m gonna say.

My head hurts and i don’t feel like drawing a new picture of Simcoe, but I feel like these two images I doodled are the perfect explanation of why I love him so much:

He’s fun! He’s crazy! He’s trigger happy! He’s manipulative! He’s an over exaggerated cartoon villain in a hot guy! He has a stupid historically inaccurate angsty backstory! What is there not to love?

I think I love Simmy sim so much because even though when you first see him he seems like this one dimensional sadistic guy who creeps on the local tavern girl, even before he (JUST SO CASUALLY????) drops his backstory, you can tell he’s more than just a flat villain. There is a clear reasoning behind everything he does, and it’s been so fun to explore why he is the way he is both with my friends and on my rp blog. He’s both a rampaging war machine and a traumatized mess, and he has such a complex character if you just take the time to look.

Simcoe’s appeal also comes from how much he feels like a robot who learned to human the wrong way, and it’s really nice to be able to point at him and go “haha look at this idiot who doesn’t know how to flirt. mood”. He’s not trying to hurt you most of the time! This is just how he deals with things. By stabbing people. Insert 500 word essay on simcoe’s mental issues and his trauma here

And of course, Roukin does such an amazing job portraying him and talking about his character. I don’t care if he’s historically inaccurate, he’s my special little boy who I will defend until the end of time. Also literally look at this face. Look At Him. He is so handsome and adorable i would so kiss him right now
