Payback is a bad bitch
Pairing: Ushijima x f!reader, Tendou x f!reader
Warnings: Making out, Cheating, cursing, slight angst
Word count: 1.7k
So I came across this idea when I was scrolling through my fyp on Tiktok and I wanted to write about it so bad. The idea belongs to rand0m.p0vz_anime on Tiktok! I hope you all enjoy reading ♥
School was going pretty normally and (Y/n) was striding down the halls of the glorious Shiratorizawa to go pick up her best friend from his class.
She spotted the crazy red head and called for him. Tendou immediately grabbed his things and said his farewells to his classmates. Since their first year, they had always been together but this year’s class ranking separated them.
Tendou couldn’t keep up his balance of sports and school which resulted to his grades dropping just a wee bit. (Y/n), despite being the strategist of the girl’s volleyball team had no hard time in excelling in both the academic and athletic field.
Her dedication to the sport and her talent managed to get her a boyfriend, who by the way, was the captain of her best friend’s team. And because even the demon coach Washijo himself had acknowledged her smarts, she had often paid trips to the men’s gym-- where Ushijima had laid eyes on her.
Wakatoshi and (Y/n) got together during their second year. The stoic and intimidating captain had a blush on his face when he asked the girl out. The proposal had a bouquet of flowers and small pricey chocolate to add to the romance.
People who saw the cooed at how a girl could melt the captain’s coldness and things went uphill from there. Tendou was of course happy for both of his best friends but he couldn’t help but feel a small tingle in his chest every time he’s reminded of it all.
Speaking of Ushijima, they were on the way to his class when (Y/n)’s phone vibrated. The captain just sent a message saying that he had a meeting with the captain of the girl’s volleyball club and he couldn’t eat with them.
(Y/n) did not like the sound of a meeting with that smug faced bitch but what could she do, right? The duo went to the cafeteria to grab food and sat at their usual table. The seats around them slowly got occupied by other members of the men’s vball team and only the captain was missing.
You had gotten close to the team having spent time with the others during practice as well. At first the members were just curious what kind of genius you are to add to their curiosity, what kind of girl could easily catch the captain’s heart?
Their curiosity then bloomed into an unexpected friendship where you all became one heck of a family. “Oh right (Y/n), where’s the captain?” (Y/n) frowned a little before answering. “He said he had a meeting with the girl’s volleyball team’s captain, Semi-Semi.”
The setter’s face scrunched as he sent an accusing glare towards a smirking Tendou. “Stop teaching her shit you jackass!” “But Semi-Semi is fun to tease!” The others laughed but a few noticed your stiff mood.
“You alright, (Y/n)? Looks like something’s ticking you off” “No I’m good. Thanks for asking, Yamagata-san” A small smile was sent to the libero’s way and he shrugged it off and kept on with his meal.
Of course being the bestest best friend he is, Tendou already knew what was wrong and it only took a glance from him to tell her that he knew. (Y/n) just shook her head slightly to acknowledge that what he thought was right.
(Y/n) stood up from her seat and said her goodbyes to the team as break period was almost over. Tendou followed and walked her to her class. “You know Satori, being a guess monster must be quite the reputation, huh? You can even read me” you giggle at your statement and he follows suit. “I think I’ve known you for long enough to figure out how your mind works”
“Yeah yeah. See you later at practice Satori. I’ll come pick you up again.” “See ya (Y/n)-chan! I’ll be waiting!” with your last waves, you both went to your respective classes.
--
The last bell finally rung and it was about time for everyone to release the sighs they’ve been keeping in the past hours. You took your time in stretching before getting up and packing your stuff.
“Any longer and weeds might start growing from where I stand, (Y/n)-chan!” Oh you knew that voice all too well. “Satori, I thought I told you I’ll come pick you up instead?” Tendou entered your classroom, took your bag and swung it over his shoulder. “Let’s go shorty, Coach Washijo might make me run laps again if we’re late”
“Oh, I forgot how strict the old man was with you, he’s so nice and gentle with me” You stuck out a tongue at him and he made faces in return. “Have you talked to Toshi today? He wasn’t answering my texts.” That’s when Tendou began to think. “Now that you mention it, I haven’t heard from him either.”
As they made their way to the men’s gym, a familiar back could be seen from where they were standing. Even if she only saw a glimpse, (Y/n) knew well that it was her lover’s back. What she didn’t expect was another pair of feet just a few inches away from Ushijima’s.
With trembling hands (Y/n) quietly went near with Tendou trailing not far behind. With the right view of the angle, it was clear as a day that the captains of the girl and boy’s volleyball team were locking lips.
Tendou could feel the rage seeping from his best friend and for once, he was scared of her. The guess monster couldn’t tell what his captain was thinking and why would he waste the girl he’s always wanted? He was all for supporting the captain whenever he could but things may start to change today.
(Y/n) calmed herself and took deep breaths. Making a scene would do nothing but harm her reputation. So instead of throwing a fit, she let out a loud chuckle. “Oh hey, ‘sup?”
The two captains were caught by surprised but Ushijima was quick to recover. Before (Y/n) or Tendou could say anything, Ushijima spoke first. “It was just a kiss, (Y/n), no need to be dramatic.”
If Tendou could beat the shit out of the olive haired man in front of him, he would but it wasn’t his call to make. A nonchalant expression painted (Y/n)’s face before she swiftly placed her arms around Satori’s neck to pull him down for a kiss.
“(Y/n), what the FUCK do you think you’re doing?!” The captain’s voice had a mix of jealousy, anger and nervousness in his tone. Tendou had wide eyes but quickly melted into the kiss he has been dreaming for so long, even if it was in a situation like this.
To fuel the fire, (Y/n) reached to tug on the red head’s roots and deepened the kiss by sliding her tongue to explore Tendou’s mouth. Small grunts were made by both parties and by the time their lips parted, a small string of saliva could be seen.
Ushijima did not take his eyes off his girl. She used to do that with him, she would give the best kisses, be it soft or heated ones just like what he witnessed in front of him. Everything he had slipped out of his grasp because of his own stupidness.
“Calm down Ushijima, it was just a kiss, no need to be dramatic.” His words backfired on him and now his mind was a complete mess. “Damn Wakatoshi-kun, I didn’t know your girl could kiss that good. If I knew, then I would have snagged her a long time ago” Tendou didn’t mean what he said, or maybe that’s what he wanted himself to believe.
“I gotta admit Satori, you’re kinda tasty, I couldn’t resist myself. I mean after all, it’s just a kiss. Nothing to get worked up about” She walked towards Ushijima with her head held high. She tilted her head and inched it towards his as if she was going to indulge him with a kiss.
A few inches before their lips could meet, she let out a small sarcastic smile “Oh sorry I almost forgot how dirty your lips became!” (Y/n) cocked her head to the side to take a good look at the captain of the girl’s volleyball team who was quiet all through out the encounter. “Oh and you, enjoy my sloppy seconds! Enjoy him all you want ‘cause he’s all yours now!” She smiled sweetly before turning around.
Wakatoshi couldn’t bear but grab her hand to stop her from leaving. She just gave a confused look “Huh, are you dense or are you just fucking dumb? We’re over fuckface. Oh sorry, I meant Ushijima”.
The captain cringed at the word and for once hated his family name. “It’s Wakatoshi. Please wait, let me explain!” His hand gripped hers even tighter and for Tendou, it was the last straw.
“Hey cap, hands off. She’s not your girl anymore” “Wow, you really want me to spell it out for you, huh Ushijima-san? We’re done. I’m breaking up with you. I’m not your girlfriend anymore. There, what else should I say? God, you’re so fucking dumb!”
Tendou slung an arm around your shoulder and you gave a last glance to your now ex, back still facing him. “I quit being the strategist for both teams. Thet’s final. We gotta go. I hope I don’t see your faces around!” (Y/n) fully turned around and held up a hand to sign a goodbye.
“Thanks Satori, sorry about kissing you without asking you first. It was nice though” Tendou smiled at this, his friend was far stronger than he had ever imagined.
It was not a good time but he still had to shoot his shot. “S-say (Y/n), wanna hang in my place. We can maybe uh... continue where we left off a while ago, or somethin” It was rare to see Tendou flustered and the look on his face right now was priceless.
A genuine hearty chuckle sang from (Y/n)’s mouth. “You sure you can handle me, big boy?” She teasingly traced his jaw with her finger. They linked pinkies and headed towards the Tendou household.
A bitter taste was left in Ushijima’s mouth. It was real, he really lost everything. His team would also be greatly affected by it. The worst part of it all, your pained, hurt face was sure to haunt him. He was the biggest idiot indeed.
After losing their best strategist, they lost to Karasuno. On a brighter note, Tendou won something far better than anyone ever could.
He found his paradise.

The other day an anti was yelling at me because I criticized the intention of their fic. It was tagged as Sterek, but then proceeded to make Stiles and Derek woefully out of character while Scott became the protagonist. I pointed out that this is what antis do and made a list of ways to spot a scott stan fic that’s labeled as Sterek for hits.
The author was upset, which, understandable, but instead of just saying they were offended, they decided to pull the tactic of presenting new information like it was a) known, and b) had anything to do with the context of what was said.
He mentioned that it wasn’t right to criticize his writing (which I didn’t do) because he was recovering from a brain injury and how DARE I abuse the mentally and physically incapacitated?!He expected me to feel shame, but what he forgot is much like every Craigslist scam, his ploy is over-saturated.
The need of antis to say “Well I don’t like X, so… IF YOU DO LIKE X YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON!” is so played and they all do it across the board. “Well, I’m not saying you can’t like Sterek, Stiles, Peter, etc. Heck, I like them! Just know that if you prioritize them over Scott (read, acknowledge them in any way and you know… like them) then that’s indicative of being complicit in racist, homophobic and misogynistic tropes (read: you suck)” *shrugs*
And because we internalize everything, we really do take the time to consider if we’re racist and in that time they’ve shamed four more people into their way of thinking that’s ultimately wrong and certainly not universal.
Which leads me to this post^^.
The idea of Scott being “stupid” has always been a fun trope. His little slip-ups were reminders that he was still human, still a kid. He was an underdog trying to be a hero despite his hormones, his reluctance and his lack of general knowledge on the Supernatural. We’re not expecting Scott to be a Rhodes scholar, he doesn’t need to be, THAT’S WHAT HE HAS STILES AND LYDIA FOR!
The idea that Scott has to be a genius has never been present in anyone’s minds except the antis, who also seem to be the only ones who take umbrage with the fact that he’s not a genius. He was never meant to be, doesn’t he have enough on his plate? So to try and push the idea that a) he’s a genius and b) you’re racist if you think he’s not, when canon rightly shows us the opposite, is hypocritical.
Sure, go ahead and write your AU’s where super scientist Scott saves the day, but know that it will be an AU and again, the only one offended is you.
Let’s take a look at this post:
Seriously, nothing pisses me off more than the taken for granted assumption that Scott is stupid when we have nothing BUT evidence to the contrary.
I will point out that many of the examples reach so far as to credit villains who sarcastically think Scott is smart. Like… nagl sis.
1) His vocabulary in the PILOT has him casually dropping words like ‘litigious’ in the appropriate context.
His dad is in the FBI and Stiles dad is a sheriff, I’m sure he’d know the word litigious. But okay, vocab, it’s a good indicator, I hope not ephemerally.
2) His teachers are concerned his grades SLIPPED dramatically after he was bitten. Grades can’t slip unless they were higher to begin with.
I mean, high C’s to are a thing? I don’t know that we ever know his grades, and I know people that will fight him being in AP bio (apparently freshman were in the same class as college level seniors? Mmkay), but it’s canon they slipped. HE WAS FIGHTING MONSTERS! I think the biggest indicator in this point is the fact there never seemed to be any proactive planning. McCall pack was very reactionary where Hale Pack was a bit more proactive. I don’t know if that is an indicator of intelligence, at least not entirely.
3) Peter (freaking PETER) says ‘I continue to be impressed by your ingenuity Scott’ after Scott engineers an interruption of his date with Melissa, sets off Allison’s car alarm to get her away from him, etc.
Yeah, this one… nagl, lol!
4) Figures out Gerard is sick, expects betrayal from him and takes countermeasures.
Now, maybe I don’t remember this, but… didn’t Gerard cough up blood? And the countermeasures were a long drawn out plan to kill him using Derek so… I don’t know how smart any of that is, but sure. He’s a long form strategist. On his own.
5) Sees his grades visibly rise the second he sets them as a priority again.
Like literally everyone ever? And this only lasted until the next monster. He has an innate inability to multitask.
6) He’s half dead on a bus in 3A, literally DYING from self-imposed guilt negating his ability to heal, and he’s still acing his SAT vocab prep questions.
Scott’s guilt thing made zero sense, especially since y’all don’t subscribe it to him using Derek to try and kill Gerard, but whatevs, sure, this is smart. I didn’t study for my SAT’s (still got 1490/1600 w00t!) but I’m sure distracting yourself from your guilt really helps you focus.
Maybe though, and this is just a thought, even going on the trip knowing he has a lot of loose ends to tie up wasn’t such a good idea?
7) As a sixteen year old, is shown being familiar with even advanced veterinary techniques, and wearing gloves and in front of an array of beakers and test tubes is shown examining a dog’s stool and finding the source of his illness (the mistletoe he ingested). Like, consider that for a second - Stiles connects threads on his whiteboards and is a detective. Scott whips out some forensic investigation shit and is stupid. LOL like what even? CHECK YOURSELF FANDOM.
That’s his job, he was trained. Stiles’ is his hobby. But again, you’re the only one making this comparison. The inability of Scott stans to just like Scott for Scott is kind of bewildering. And yeah some people are more science minded so there’s something to be said for his diagnostic skills. I don’t see Stiles as having an keen interest in actual medical sciences so sure, Scott has that up on him.
But again, book smarts and street smarts aren’t the same. Scott has one and Stiles has the other, this is why they’re partners. They’re not opposites though, they’re yin and yang. Stiles has the tactical and strategic skills while Scott is the braun and the leadership. He assesses threats and then delegates others to take action. That’s what a leader does.
8) Actually DOES his assigned reading, and quotes Heart of Darkness, rattles off about Greek myths and monsters, etc.
I mean… he’s a student, but ok.
9) Gets a B in AP Bio before shit starts going down in 5A and only considers dropping it because he’s back to prioritizing staying all night at the school to try and stop mad scientists from killing a teenage girl instead of studying at home.
But some of his protection methods and ideas (like using said teenage girl as bait without telling her) are not the smartest.
And again, they’re not supposed to be, because Scott McCall is not infallible. He’s a teenager and still human. He’s trying to make due with what he has. The problem is you see “Scott is stupid” and then you turn tail and run. You miss all the things about how he has a big heart and rises to action despite constant obstacles.
Nope, you look at one thing and then you call anyone who would dare… not even to disagree with you, but not agree with you 100%, a racist? How is that acceptable or ok? Why do you get to make the rules for everyone’s experience?
I always say, be the change you want to see. If you and your buddies spent more time creating content that wasn’t petty and vindictive, you’d see your numbers rise. But no one wants to be a part of a group whose sole existence relies on pouring hateful energy into a white boy. Scott fans love Scott. And if you did too, maybe you’d be able to engage more. But this idea that Scott fans have to love only Scott and the way that you say to love them is outlandish. And -not to invoke Godwin’s law too strongly- kinda totalitarian.
Get it together, y’all.

here’s just some author’s notes for the huge taz fic i finished today
you can read it here if you want
https://archiveofourown.org/works/13468608/chapters/30877473
Author’s notes,, i haven’t proofed these so, apologies ;000
Wow. Huge. This is literally the biggest thing ive ever written to completion. I had the whole fic planned before I uploaded the first chapter, and to accentuate the planning I had a 100+ page document of notes and also had an excel sheet which looked like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the yellow on the left means summer, and blue when it was winter. The second column is day of the year, third important dates. On the right is the events which I highlighted yellow as I wrote them)
and like this
Tumblr media
Its also the first fic I decided to upload as I wrote each chapter because I knew it would take about a year to complete. I wanted fan support (which I got and loved <3 ) and I didn’t want to sit on the whole thing and constantly re-write it and end up hating it and never publishing it.
So the way this fic began is I was listening to TAZ balance for the first time and as I different scenes or dialogue occurred I started taking notes on my phone for how they would translate to a high school setting. This whole thing started around the time I was at crystal kingdom and ironically, that’s were im up to in my relisten at the time of publishing the last chapter.
The other, very original, formative idea for the fic was this:
Magnus beats up kids who are homophobic to Taako as a way to cover for the fact that he is also bi // Thinks he’s straight and overly supportive of his gay friends
Similarly, in the original idea, it was going to be Julia who had died, not magnus’ dad. There was a really depressing scene where magnus spent the day with Julia’s parents.
Another formative idea was,
My name is Taako, you know, from Instagram.
And I suppose in the end this was the most impactful because I decided that I personally specialise in writing comedy based things. I wanted this to be a light-hearted fun fic.
In the original fiction, Travis and the other McElroys show regret that Magnus’ story is formed around the death of a woman (Julia). Similarly in sensitivity to the McElroy’s personal background I decided that this was not the right thing to write about. But I also wanted this story to be a magnus emotional journey. By choosing his dad as the character who had died I could keep many things planned such as magnus’ one year gap, Fischer as a therapy fish, Magnus’ aggression etc.
My favourite TAZ character is magnus, if that wasn’t obvious. But ironically, I feel like of all the characters his dialogue is the most OOC. While I tried to keep his thought-logic and actions to Magnus I don’t feel like magnus would say 99% of what my magnus did. Conversely Taako seemed like one of those characters who would be hard to pinpoint but I actually found him easiest to write.
Taako’s magic stone which ultimately ruined the play was introduced as I felt I was focusing too much on Taako’s appearance and not the fact he is incredibly smart and a brilliant wizard.
So I decided to make this fic mostly lighthearted. I wanted to squeeze as many highschool tropes in like the gigantic party, the school play, the football match. The last chapter has a scene in a class for every subject as I felt like I somewhat forgot to write them ever being in class for a large chunk of the middle section. But then again no one really want to read about school do they?
I almost always write my stories to a song, but in this case it was an album. Vance Joy’s Dream Your Life Away, and while I love the music I never want to hear it again for like at least a few months. I would play the whole album every time I sat down to write this thing. It set the summer-time mood for the fic. If you listen to the songs youll probably find places where each song inspired bits of the fic.
The first song Wind’s of Change begins with the like ‘I miss you more than you could know’ which began the driving idea of Magnus dealing with the loss of his father. The song ‘first time’ begins with a line about jumping in the neighbours pool which obviously… inspired magnus jumping into a pool. ‘The best that I can’ inspired Magnus and Mr Waxmen’s interaction. I love the idea of a teenage boy who keeps doing the wrong thing, feeling shame in himself and in his mentor and trying to get better.
The song ‘from afar’ was initially Taako’s song. This whole fic was going to be a Taako / Magnus / Kravitz fic where Taako convinces Magnus to take care of himself and Magnus realises Taako is in love with him and this helps him discover he’s bi and it was super dramatic. There was (an still is) some Magnus / Kravtiz scenes too mostly in the form of flirting.
As I stepped away from this being a ship heavy fic this song became Lucretia’s song. Lucretia’s unrequited love to Lup was mostly written from the heart, and I’m so sorry to Lucretia stans, she deserves all the GFs in the world. But I felt this was a very powerful thing to write in a teen story.
Taako’s fear of LDR is also taken from the heart. In a way this whole fic was a serious vent from my high school experience. Similarly as I am now 21, I didn’t feel comfortable nor did I even really conceptualise any NSFW scenes for this fic. It just didn’t seem to have a place. Besides, sex is in almost all other teen movies and books. I also wanted to keep weed out of this one bc I personally hate how drugs are in every teen story.
I actually had a planned acronym for the IPRE, the Insufferable Prick Resistance Ensemble, and a short backstory that Magnus Taako Lup and Merle formed the group in their youth to complain about annoying classmates.
Writing Lydia and Edward was the worst. I don’t know how to write cool and sassy kids. Me at me: don’t make me do it again.
Heres the entirety of my prepared barry notes:
Barry
-Oculus, opens portals?
-Likes pretty girl?!!?!?!
I had a planned thing for how each of their grand relics could play into the fic but it was far too much work.
I was also planning on writing wayyyy more Lucretia and wayyyy less Barry. Bc Lucretia was basically me as a teenager. But I started writing Barry as one of my friends and this helped me just write bundles and bundles of Barry content.
I really didn’t have anything planned for davenport. Even drawing his yearbook I was like whelp idk. The idea of him becoming a sports strategist kicked in right as I was writing the paragraph about killian being the new jock, simply bc the section needed to be longer and frankly, I love how his story turned out.
Part of scrapping the original, edgy tone of julia’s death and taako / magnus romance was wanting to continue the tradition where TAZ is a world separate of racism and homophobia. I scrapped original ideas of magnus being provoked by homophobic remarks and transphobic remarks about lup, wanting this to also be an escapist piece like TAZ is. Therefore coming up with other reasons for magnus to get into fights was hard and also I hate writing fights bc ive never been in a fight in my life.
The first half of this fic I was riding an enthusiasm high and just adding scenes and conversations as I thought of them and listened to the story. By about the end of semester 3 I still cared about the fic but I was basically writing everything I had pre-planned with little innovation.
All in all, this was extremely fun to write, and I think it made me a much, much, much better author. I love anyone who read the whole thing sm.

THE BANNON intvw intrigue: what was he doing? — WHAT TRIGGERS TRUMP's temper — KELLY 'dismayed' — FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: Sessions remarks in N.C. — B'DAY: Ron Bonjean
Good Thursday morning. BANNON SPEAKS … TWO Steve Bannon interviews in the last 48 or so hours.
— NYT: “Trump’s Embrace of Racially Charged Past Puts Republicans in Crisis,” by Jeremy Peters, Jonathan Martin and Jack Healy: “Stephen K. Bannon, the president’s chief strategist, said in an interview that if Democrats want to fight over Confederate monuments and attack Mr. Trump as a bigot, that was a fight the president would win. ‘President Trump, by asking, ‘Where does this all end’ — Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln — connects with the American people about their history, culture and traditions,’ he said. ‘The race-identity politics of the left wants to say it’s all racist,’ Mr. Bannon added. ‘Just give me more. Tear down more statues. Say the revolution is coming. I can’t get enough of it.’” http://nyti.ms/2fN5ShN
Story Continued Below
— THE BIG WHAMMY — READ THIS: “Steve Bannon, Unrepentant: Trump’s embattled strategist phones me, unbidden, to opine on China, Korea, and his enemies in the administration,” by Robert Kuttner in the American Prospect: “Needless to say, I was a little stunned to get an email from Bannon’s assistant midday Tuesday, just as all hell was breaking loose once again about Charlottesville, saying that Bannon wished to meet with me. I’d just published a column on how China was profiting from the U.S.-North Korea nuclear brinkmanship, and it included some choice words about Bannon’s boss. …
“Far from dressing me down for comparing Trump to Kim, he began, ‘It’s a great honor to finally track you down. I’ve followed your writing for years and I think you and I are in the same boat when it comes to China. You absolutely nailed it.’ ‘We’re at economic war with China,’ he added. ‘It’s in all their literature. They’re not shy about saying what they’re doing. One of us is going to be a hegemon in 25 or 30 years and it’s gonna be them if we go down this path. On Korea, they’re just tapping us along. It’s just a sideshow.’ …
“Contrary to Trump’s threat of fire and fury, Bannon said: ‘There’s no military solution [to North Korea’s nuclear threats], forget it. Until somebody solves the part of the equation that shows me that ten million people in Seoul don’t die in the first 30 minutes from conventional weapons, I don’t know what you’re talking about, there’s no military solution here, they got us.’ …
“‘I’m changing out people at East Asian Defense; I’m getting hawks in. I’m getting Susan Thornton [acting head of East Asian and Pacific Affairs] out at State.’ But can Bannon really win that fight internally? ‘That’s a fight I fight every day here,’ he said. ‘We’re still fighting. There’s Treasury and [National Economic Council chair] Gary Cohn and Goldman Sachs lobbying.’ …
“I asked Bannon about the connection between his program of economic nationalism and the ugly white nationalism epitomized by the racist violence in Charlottesville and Trump’s reluctance to condemn it. … He dismissed the far right as irrelevant and sidestepped his own role in cultivating it: ‘Ethno-nationalism—it’s losers. It’s a fringe element. I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, uh, help crush it more.’ ‘These guys are a collection of clowns,’ he added.” http://bit.ly/2w4q0lW
**SUBSCRIBE to Playbook: http://politi.co/2lQswbh
OK, LET’S REVIEW. This is super juicy. BANNON dumped on colleagues and contradicted the president on North Korea. There are two positions here: Axios’s Jonathan Swan writes Bannon did not know he was giving an interview. @jonathanvswan: “You might read some takes tomorrow saying Bannon is playing 5D chess & this was part of a devious strategy. Those takes will be wrong.” (Read Swan’s piece for more http://bit.ly/2i9eMqL). Bannon has told people he did not believe this was an on-the-record call. Kuttner, who wrote the piece, said he and Bannon never discussed it being off the record. Generally speaking, that’s a conversation you have if you want your remarks kept private. To believe Bannon is to believe that he was caught off guard after calling the reporter, forgot the rules of conventional journalism or believed a left-wing reporter would keep his incendiary remarks private.
— THE ALTERNATE VIEW: Bannon is an incredibly savvy political operator who talks to reporters all the time, and did these interviews for some reason. Yes, Bannon, who is a top adviser to the president who harps on leaking, is constantly gabbing with journalists. He gave two interviews over the course of roughly 48 hours. His job was on the line, then he found himself aligned with the president over protests in the south. He used the Prospect to dump on Gary Cohn, the president’s economic adviser, with whom he has clashed, and to get his views heard on China. Whatever his motivation was, he felt like he should dial up some reporters and get his take out there.
THE BIG PICTURE — MIKE SHEAR, MAGGIE HABERMAN and GLENN THRUSH: “The president’s top advisers described themselves as stunned, despondent and numb. Several said they were unable to see how Mr. Trump’s presidency would recover, and others expressed doubts about his capacity to do the job. In contrast, the president told close aides that he felt liberated by his news conference. Aides said he seemed to bask afterward in his remarks, and viewed them as the latest retort to the political establishment that he sees as trying to tame his impulses. Mr. Trump’s venting on Tuesday came despite pleas from his staff, including his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner. …
“Mr. Bannon, whose future in the White House remains uncertain, has been encouraging Mr. Trump to remain defiant. Two White House officials who have been trying to moderate the president’s position suggested that Mr. Bannon was using the crisis as a way to get back in the good graces of the president, who has soured on Mr. Bannon’s internal machinations and reputation for leaking stories about West Wing rivals to conservative news media outlets. Many in the White House said they still held on to the hope, however slim, that the new White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly, could impose order on the disarray even as Mr. Trump hopscotches from one self-destructive episode to the next. Mr. Kelly, who watched the president’s performance on Tuesday with his head hung low, grimacing at some of Mr. Trump’s remarks, is frustrated, according to people inside the White House.” http://nyti.ms/2i7LnwM
THE PRESIDENT at 6:19 a.m.: “Publicity seeking Lindsey Graham falsely stated that I said there is moral equivalency between the KKK, neo-Nazis & white supremacists………and people like Ms. Heyer. Such a disgusting lie. He just can’t forget his election trouncing. The people of South Carolina will remember!”
— WE NEVER REALLY hear Graham talk about the presidential primary, which he dropped out of nearly two years ago (Dec. 2015). ALSO: Graham won his last election by 15 points, and won his last primary by 41 points.
— NANCY COOK and JOSH DAWSEY: “‘In some ways, Trump would rather have people calling him racist than say he backed down the minute he was wrong,’ one adviser to the White House said on Wednesday about Charlottesville. ‘This may turn into the biggest mess of his presidency because he is stubborn and doesn’t realize how bad this is getting.’ For Trump, anger serves as a way to manage staff, express his displeasure or simply as an outlet that soothes him. Often, aides and advisers say, he’ll get mad at a specific staffer or broader situation, unload from the Oval Office and then three hours later act as if nothing ever occurred even if others still feel rattled by it. Negative television coverage and lawyers earn particular ire from him. White House officials and informal advisers say the triggers for his temper are if he thinks someone is lying to him, if he’s caught by surprise, if someone criticizes him, or if someone stops him from trying to do something or seeks to control him.” http://politi.co/2wbZSWB

MORE FALLOUT — “Mitch McConnell’s secret fury over Charlottesville response highlights GOP’s Trump dilemma,” by USA Today’s Heidi Przybyla: “There was a reason why it took Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell an entire night to respond to President Trump’s chaotic news conference equating counter protesters with the Nazis they came to resist. He was livid. Two sources close to the senator, speaking under condition of anonymity to describe private conversations, said the pro-civil rights Republican who lived through the 1960s in Kentucky closely deliberated on the best way forward.” https://usat.ly/2x5LTyj
— WHAT MNUCHIN THINKS, per Bloomberg’s Saleha Mohsin, Justin Sink, and Margaret Talev: “As Treasury Department aides filtered in for a routine meeting on Wednesday, there was one main issue to be discussed: Secretary Steven Mnuchin does not stand with Donald Trump on the topic of neo-Nazis. Mnuchin, like other officials, had no idea the president would inflame the Charlottesville controversy by equating white supremacists to counter-protesters, the staff was told, according to two people familiar with the meeting.
“He stood beside Trump at the president’s news conference in New York, the one that devolved into a shouting match with reporters over race, but not with the intent of endorsing his remarks on the issue. And now the message was that it’s time to move on. The team was encouraged to look beyond the chaos of the past several days and instead focus on advancing Trump’s economic agenda, the two people said.” https://bloom.bg/2w4vj4Q
— “Former CIA director slams Trump’s ‘despicable’ comments in letter to CNN anchor,” by CNN’s Zachary Cohen: “Former CIA director John Brennan slammed President Donald Trump’s ‘dangerous’ and ‘ugly’ comments on the deadly violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia — writing a personal letter to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer after ‘The Situation Room’ anchor spoke publicly about the fact that he lost all four grandparents to the evils of Nazism. … ‘If allowed to continue along this senseless path, Mr. Trump will do lasting harm to American society and to our standing in the world. By his words and his actions, Mr. Trump is putting our national security and our collective futures at grave risk.’” With the whole letter http://cnn.it/2uRYRid
–“Apple’s Tim Cook ‘disagrees’ with Donald Trump’s take on neo-Nazi violence in Charlottesville,” by Recode’s Tony Romm and Kara Swisher: “Apple CEO Tim Cook on Wednesday called for an ‘unequivocal’ denouncement of the recent neo-Nazi demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia, stressing he disagreed with comments by President Donald Trump that attributed the violence there to ‘many sides’ — and not white supremacists. In a note to Apple’s employees, obtained Wednesday night by Recode, Cook also announced the company would donate $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. Apple plans to match its employees donations to human rights groups — on a 2-for-1 basis — until Sept 30, while setting up a new system in iTunes, its music software, to ‘offer users an easy way to join us in directly supporting the work of the SPLC,’ Cook said.” http://bit.ly/2w4TUXi

Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, announced Wednesday his panel will host a hearing next month focused on domestic terrorism threats, including that of white supremacist groups, following the weekend clash in Charlottesville at a rally organized by white nationalist groups. The Sept. 12 hearing was previously scheduled as part of an annual review of worldwide terrorist threats. But McCaul, R-Texas, said the hearing will be broadened to also address domestic threats.” http://washex.am/2i906I4
WAPO’S ASHLEY PARKER and BOB COSTA on JOHN KELLY — “Trump’s lack of discipline leaves new chief of staff frustrated and dismayed”: “The uproar — which has consumed not only the White House but the Republican Party — left Kelly deeply frustrated and dismayed just over two weeks into his job, said people familiar with his thinking. The episode also underscored the difficult challenges that even a four-star general faces in instilling a sense of order around Trump, whose first instinct when cornered is to lash out, even self-destructively. …
“This portrait of the White House under Kelly comes from interviews with 17 West Wing aides, informal advisers, Republican lawmakers and Trump confidants, many speaking on the condition of anonymity to offer a more candid assessment….Kelly has largely improved staff morale, and implemented a rigor and order that has made West Wing aides feel both more optimistic and less mistrustful of one another, several White House aides said. …
“Kelly has transformed the West Wing from a political Grand Central Station — with aides and hangers-on cycling through the Oval Office — into an actual place of business. One outside adviser recalls stopping by the White House to say hello to his friends on days he had free time. Under Kelly, he said, approvingly, ‘If you’re coming, now it’s, ‘Why are you coming? Who are you coming to see? And why does the White House care about what you have to say?’’ …
“Late last week in Bedminster, he gathered at Trump’s clubhouse restaurant for a relaxed, social dinner with the senior staff members. … As they reminisced about the campaign and told jokes, Kelly offered a quip. ‘The best job I ever had was as a sergeant in the Marine Corps,’ he said with a laugh, ‘and after one week on this job, I believe the best job I ever had is as a sergeant in the Marine Corps.’” http://wapo.st/2wcJWU6
NYT’S MIKE SCHMIDT and MATT APUZZO: “Trump Lawyer Forwards Email Echoing Secessionist Rhetoric”: “President Trump’s personal lawyer on Wednesday forwarded an email to conservative journalists, government officials and friends that echoed secessionist Civil War propaganda and declared that the group Black Lives Matter “has been totally infiltrated by terrorist groups.”
“The email forwarded by John Dowd, who is leading the president’s legal team, painted the Confederate general Robert E. Lee in glowing terms and equated the South’s rebellion to that of the American Revolution against England. Its subject line — ‘The Information that Validates President Trump on Charlottesville’ — was a reference to comments Mr. Trump made earlier this week in the aftermath of protests in the Virginia college town. ‘You cannot be against General Lee and be for General Washington,’ the email reads, ‘there literally is no difference between the two men.’ …
“‘You’re sticking your nose in my personal email?’ Mr. Dowd told The Times in a brief telephone interview. ‘People send me things. I forward them.’ He then hung up.” … The email’s author, Jerome Almon, runs several websites alleging government conspiracies and arguing that the F.B.I. has been infiltrated by Islamic terrorists. He once unsuccessfully sued the State Department for $900 million over claims of discrimination.” http://nyti.ms/2vLd8OX

A group claiming it is advocating free speech has planned a rally for Saturday on the historic Boston Common, with a group advocating racial justice planning its own gathering in opposition. Boston officials said they have laid down strict conditions, including no sticks, weapons or backpacks. … A rally scheduled for Aug. 26 in San Francisco has prompted House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) and several California lawmakers to urge the National Park Service to rescind the permit to gather on federal park land there.” http://wapo.st/2i8kEjL
— PHOENIX MAYOR WANTS TRUMP TO DELAY — by Arizona Republic’s Yvonne Wingett Sanchez: “Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton wrote in a statement Wednesday he was disappointed to learn of Trump’s visit so close to the violent events in Charlottesville. SCOOP — “Trump Set to Roll Back Obama-Era Contraception Rule,” by WSJ’s Michelle Hackman and Louise Radnofsky: “The Trump administration is poised to issue a rule unwinding an Obama-era requirement that employee health benefits include contraception, which will spark a fresh round of litigation over an issue that has been before courts for six years. Federal health officials are expected to finalize a regulation that would allow employers with religious or moral objections to birth control to omit coverage for contraception from their workers’ plans … The Trump administration rule would allow a much broader set of employers to opt out of offering coverage for birth control, making moot a ‘workaround’ designed by the Obama administration that allowed women in some cases to obtain coverage even if their employers had declined to offer it directly.” http://on.wsj.com/2i8MgFH

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK – WHAT A.G. JEFF SESSIONS WILL SAY TODAY — Sessions is speaking about gang violence today at 11:30 a.m. to local and federal law enforcement from North Carolina at the Gangs Across the Carolinas Training Symposium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina: “According to the FBI’s most recent National Gang Report, approximately half of the gang investigators they surveyed said that gang membership and gang activity were increasing. Approximately one third of jurisdictions reported an increase in threats to law enforcement. … Whether it is MS-13, the Bloods, or Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs, gangs are targeting our youth and law-abiding citizens. But I have news for these vicious criminals: WE ARE TARGETING YOU. …
“President Trump is serious about supporting our state and local law enforcement. That is why he sent my Department three executive orders when I took office. One directs us to be supportive of law enforcement. A second declared that our mission is to reduce crime. And the third requires us to dismantle transnational criminal organizations. These are our goals and we are getting after them. … Since the beginning of this year, the Department of Justice has secured more than 1,200 convictions against gang members. … We will not let up. We will combat this threat, take the fight to them, and devastate these criminal enterprises. I refuse to cede one more block, one more street corner, one more inch to these gangs.”
FOR YOUR RADAR — REUTERS: “China military criticizes ‘wrong’ U.S. moves on Taiwan, South China Sea: “The ‘wrong’ actions of the United States on Taiwan, its South China Sea patrols and deployment of an advanced anti-missile system in South Korea have had a large, negative influence on military trust, a senior Chinese officer said on Thursday. Fan Changlong, a vice chairman of China’s powerful Central Military Commission, told Joseph Dunford, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, that mutual trust mechanisms between the two militaries had continued to improve, China’s defense ministry said. ‘But wrong actions on the Taiwan issue, the United States deploying the THAAD system around China, U.S. ships and aircraft’s activities in the South China Sea, the United States close-in surveillance in the sea and air near China have had a large, negative influence on bilateral military ties and mutual trust,’ Fan added.” http://reut.rs/2uScduN

CASH DASH — “Lawmakers raise cash off Trump-Russia probe,” by Austin Wright and Darren Samuelsohn: “Rep. Eric Swalwell’s campaign website features ominous photos of President Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner. It warns about Russia’s attacks on last year’s presidential election and asks visitors to sign a petition demanding that a bipartisan commission investigate. Those who sign are then asked to contribute $5, $10, $25 or more to the California Democrat. Swalwell is one of the junior members of the House Intelligence Committee, which has long had an unspoken rule against engaging in partisan fundraising related to the panel’s secretive work.
“But the panel’s high-profile Russia investigation is now putting that rule to the test, and experts are warning that some committee members’ recent appeals for campaign cash could undermine everyone’s credibility. … Fundraising appeals from Intelligence Committee members have so far avoided detailed references to the panel’s investigation, but there is undoubtedly a connection. And these fundraising appeals come as outside groups, including some with ties to the Trump administration, are capitalizing on the highly charged issue to bolster their own war chests.” http://politi.co/2uSeLsQ

With one crisis of violence in minority neighborhoods and another with police department morale, he had all but been silenced on national politics. But 18 months after fighting off resignation calls and protests in the streets, the Chicago mayor has rediscovered his national voice — and with Donald Trump in the White House, he’s as emboldened as ever to use it. He’s on CNN. He’s on The New York Times’ op-ed pages. He’s dispensing advice to top House Democrats on national campaign strategy. He’s jetting off to Milan and London to forge mayoral alliances while brashly picking fights with New York. ****** A message from the Coalition for Affordable Prescription Drugs (CAPD): The high prices that drug makers set for prescription drugs can put financial strain on patients, employers, unions and others who provide health care coverage to more than 50 percent of Americans.
