What would you say to any aspiring turtle owner before getting their first turtle? Any advice, warnings, ect?
Turtles need a lot of space. Franklin has a 40-gallon tank, and he's a fairly small guy. A larger turtle and/or multiple turtles will need more space. Turtles are also very dirty animals. Like goldfish, they need frequent water changes and filter checks. Ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite can build up quickly, even in a seemingly clean tank. A larger tank will also help here, as the same amount of ammonia will be much less concentrated in a large tank than in a small one.
Hiya! I just wanted to let you know that the turtle looks more like a painted turtle than a red eared slider to me. Also, dantheturtleman and theturtlegirl on YouTube are good sources of information on turtle care as far as I know. If you end up keeping him for a bit, you could probably get away with a 55 gallon storage bin as a cheap tank for him temporarily, just make sure to put stuff against the sides bc they will start to bow out if too much water is in there. I hope everything works out with him!
Thank you!
Looking at the pictures of painted turtles vs red eared sliders, I'm pretty sure you are right in that Ninja is a painted turtle.
I really appreciate the resources and tips, I'll go check out those channels. A 55 gallon storage is much more for feasible for me and good to know about it bowing out.
Hi friend! I have a male Reeves turtle that's ~29 years old- His name is Ollie - and I'm wondering what a good weight is for him. He's currently 285 grams and there's no fatty protrusions from his openings when he pulls his arms and legs in, but he seems to be seeking out food more than in the past. Thanks for the info and have a great day! -Rich
Hey Rich! Wow--I don't personally know of many turtles as old as Ollie. He has had a good long life (though, knowing turtles, it's very possible that he still has many good years ahead of him).
As I'm sure you know, it can be hard to gauge whether a turtle is at a healthy weight since so much of their body is in the shell. One way is to look at the arms, legs, and tail--do they look skinny/sunken or are they filled out with appropriate muscle and fat deposits? You can also look at the skin between the front legs and the head--it should go more or less straight across, not be deeply sunken in and hollow-looking (underweight) or bulging out between the neck and legs (overweight).
Often the first sign of declining health in a turtle is losing weight and a decreased appetite--so I wouldn't be terribly worried about him seeking out more food. It's possible that he is hungrier due to environmental changes (change in temperature, light cycle, seasons, etc.).
If you want a numeric way to measure his health, I highly recommend weighing him regularly. This will let you spot a concerning decline in weight faster than you may have noticed it from visual cues alone. Especially with an older turtle who might be more vulnerable to stress and illness.
I hope that helps! Happy to answer other questions too.
Encountering wildlife can be a thrilling experience, but it’s essential to know how to react, especially if things take an unexpected turn. One such scenario is when a turtle, known for its slow pace and docile nature, clamps onto your hand.
1. Stay Calm and Composed
Panicking can make the situation worse. Remember, the turtle isn’t biting out of malice. Avoid any sudden movements, and most…
Whew, finally done! Sorry it took so long, this is the largest update I've done yet clocking in at about 15 pages (compared to my usual 7-10). Also, congrats to those who guessed Todd for the distraction! Poor guy went through the last of his mystically preserved lemons just for this moment. What a bro.
Hello! Zenon is both adorable and an excellent name! I just wanted to ask, and forgive me if you've answered this before but, is the discoloration on Zenon's shell just something that happens naturally with age or they retaining scutes or is it previous damage/shell rot/infection that hasn't been shed yet?
Hi, thank you for asking about Zenon! Zenon is an active and curious boy who keeps exploring and doing unexpected things, we would say the ‘uneven’ pattern on its carapace is formed partly as a natural result of its character. It’s living in an indoor aquarium close to the window (we prefer to let it enjoy natural sunlight in addition to the extra UV lamp), that’s also why the shell has developed additional colours. We clean the aquarium weekly and take it to the vet for regular check, so it’s a healthy turtle :) And it’s still growing fast and shedding all the time. By the way, I use filter for some of the posts, maybe that can explain the discolouration as well. Thanks for asking!
Crazy how some of the best animated movies of the year didn't even come from Disney or Dreamworks, y'know, the two companies famous for their animated films.
was rewatching fabian’s baron moment on account of it being the most delicious piece of pvp in my recent memory and ally beardsley’s growth as a player just shone through so brightly and with such clarity. after dusting off their shock they immediately asked about the nemesis ward, had enough knowledge about fellow pcs stocked to remember adaine’s ac with such like frustrated confidence and certainty, suggested to siobhan to dimension door out of adaine’s room, like. they came into this making a character with 4 dex. and now the dice deity offered to roll a check to sense if adaine was in danger. making decisions, asking questions, getting invested in the story, trying so hard with the tools they have to save characters from danger; ally beardsley is an incredible d&d player.
