quick orc tusk update
Tumblr media
(image description: a digital portrait of a very old orcish man, in a side profile bust. His white-gray hair is braided, and he has multiple piercings on his face. His tusks are large and curled into circular shapes, creating a full loop with the tips moving up above his pig-like snout. The tusks have simple metal cuffs around them, connected with short tight chains. end description.)
having done more research, I decided I was being far too tame with my orc tusks. Here's a photo of a real boar tusk with the root intact:
Tumblr media
(image description: a photo of a boar tusk that almost forms a full circle. The root is about half the circle, covered in dark lines and much thicker than the tip of the tusk. there is a clear line where the tusk emerged from the gums. end description.)
boars, as in male pigs or hogs, have tusks that grow until they die. and sometimes the tusks are the cause of death, because they will curve back and stab the boar right in the face and keep growing. sows, as in the female pigs/hogs, will have tusks that stop growing in adulthood. frequent fights can break the tusks, and the upper jaw tusks that stay shorter actually keep the lower jaw tusks sharpened. which is cool.
this is why domesticated pigs usually have their tusks removed while they're young. the size of that root would make removal extremely difficult later. if you think a wisdom tooth removal is bad, try having that thing taken out of your jaw. ouch.
I have been drawing my orcs with smaller tusks, tastefully small. just big enough to stand out. But I think from here on out I'm going to draw them much bigger and start adding more interesting dental jewelry to show how they got the tusks to grow in specific directions, like how this old orc's tusks have been manipulated into spirals far enough away from his face to keep them from stabbing him.
Of course, there could also be interesting differences between orc cultures. Those that place more value in people who use their tusks, allowing them to break and grow in more natural ways through fights that are considered honorable, social bonding time, even a form of diplomacy through combat. maybe a great warrior would prove their prowess by keeping their many broken tusk tips as a necklace.
and in other orc cultures, perhaps they place more importance in keeping their tusks long and carefully shaped, considering the long tusks to be a sign of wisdom, of someone who thinks more before acting, rather than recklessly solving their problems by force, or they could be a sign of spiritual power.
Neither option is more correct than the other, it just shows the different ways orcs might build their cultures and make their tusks part of their traditions.

Strange Symmetries #22: The Whalerus And The Twisted Tusks
Mammalian tusks usually grow in symmetrical pairs with only minor developmental asymmetry, but a few species have evolved much more uneven arrangements.
Tumblr media
Odobenocetops peruvianus was a small toothed whale that lived during the Miocene, about 7-3 million years ago, in shallow coastal waters around what is now Peru. Around 3m long (~10'), it was a highly unusual cetacean with binocular vision, a vestigial melon, muscular lips, and a pair of tusks – features convergent with walruses that suggest it had a similar lifestyle suction-feeding on seafloor molluscs and crustaceans.
In males the right tusk was much more elongated than the left, measuring around 50cm long (~1'8") in this species and up to 1.35m (4'5") in the closely related Odobenocetops leptodon. Since these teeth were quite fragile they probably weren't used for any sort of combat, and they may have instead served more of a visual display function.
And despite being closer related to modern narwhals and belugas than to other toothed whales, Odobenocetops' long right-sided asymmetric tusks actually seem to have evolved completely independently from the iconic left-sided asymmetric spiral tusks of narwhals.

The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) lived across Eurasia and North America during the last ice age, mostly from the Pleistocene about 400,000 years ago to the early Holocene about 10,000 years ago – altohugh a few relict populations survived until around 4,000 years ago in isolated areas of Alaska, Siberia, and eastern Russia.
Around 3m tall at the shoulder (~10ft), these hairy proboscideans had very long curving tusks that were used for digging out vegetation from under snow and ice, scraping bark from trees, and for fighting.
The tusks showed a lot of variation in their curvature, and were often rather asymmetrical, a condition also seen in the closely related Columbian mammoth. Like modern elephants mammoths may have also favored using one side over the other for certain tasks, which over their lifetimes could result in uneven wear exaggerating the natural asymmetry even more.

So there’s been multiple things on humanoid tusks formed from canine teeth, but something I’ve been wondering ever since I’ve learned this fact recently: what would the logistics be for humans/humanoids with tusks more like elephants, given that proboscidean tusks are derived from incisors?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image description: the first is a photo of an elephant skull, the second is a photo of a mole rat skull. they both have distinctly long incisors, but the elephant only has long incisors on the upper jaw. The skulls are elongated at the front, keeping these incisors separate from the other teeth. end description.)
I know rodent teeth don't count as tusks, but they're close enough for the purpose of this post. Essentially, any teeth you want to make into tusks will have their own space. this is because they need a stronger root than other teeth, so the skull has to make room for that root.
here's a few sketches of human skulls with incisor tusks in in the upper jaw, lower jaw, and both.
Tumblr media
(image description: three sketches of human skulls altered to have space for large incisors in different locations. The jaws are bigger and more elongated where the incisor tusks stick out. end description)

Angeltober 2023 Day 15 - Wine
finding the right animal was not as hard as i first thought, due to internships at buchers and my love for ghibli movies (in this case I am referencing Mononoke) I choose a wild boar for this piece. With some specie's Tusks growign to the point of death It was fitting to show the boars blood as the Wine that is also spilled here. Being trapped in a wine cellar with no possibel way of wearing down its tusks they kept growing to the point of killing it.. Also with it being Angeltober the theme of blood being wine was just too perfect, since Jeses himself tells his followers to "drink this wine for it is my blood" in christian believes as well, which a friend made me aware of since I don't focus too much on these kinds of believes since I am more interested in just the angelology :3 -dairiem
