November 10, 2020 - Shore Plover, New Zealand Shore Plover, Tūturuatu, Sand Plover, New Zealand Plover, or Shore Dotterel (Thinornis novaeseelandiae)
Found only on a few islands in New Zealand, these plovers had a population of about 175 adult birds in early 2016. They eat crustaceans, mollusks, and other invertebrates, along with some small fish, foraging in large flocks outside of the breeding season. Monogamous pairs nest under plants, boulders, or driftwood on or near the shore. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs, with females doing most of the incubation during the day and males taking over at night. While a captive breeding program has helped to stabilize their population, they are still classified as Endangered by the IUCN and face continuing threats from introduced and native predators, habitat loss, disease, storms, and disturbance by humans.

Who doesn’t love a little bumblebee bird! This tiny tuturuatu shore plover chick was difficult to keep track of amongst the rock pools and lichen stippled rocks of Rangatira island, but I did manage to sneak a few photos. ⠀ ⠀ #birdventurenz #thebrillianceofbirds #nzbirds #your_best_birds #conservationphotography #conservationphotographer #nuts_about_birds #bird_brilliance #birds_adored @docgovtnz @forestandbird @nz_birds @nikonnz #nikond500 #nikon #birdphotography #feathered_perfection #aotearoa #chathamislands #rarebird #extinctionisforever #endangeredspecies #bird_lovers_daily #bird_lovers #nature_brilliance #eathcaptures #wilderness #explore #adventure #fieldbiology #fieldbiologist https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Knq5Gp85G/?igshid=1h4ksvdilo6zv

Endangered Inktober - Tuturuatu by Ciameth
Instead of the official Inktober promots, each day of October I will highlight a different underappreciated endangered species.  These species are at risk of disappearing forever due to human activity, yet most people have never heard of them. Day 1 - The Tuturuatu, or Shore Plover Thinornis novaeseelandiae IUCN Status: Endangered Native to New Zealand, the adorable Tuturuatu population stands at 150-220 mature individuals.  It has been wiped out of most of its historic range by domestic cats and brown rats, two predators introduced by Europeans in the late eighteenth century. Loss of habitat to agriculture, continued mortality from invasive predators, and higher frequency of severe coastal weather due to climate change threaten the survival of this species. Thanks to captive breeding programs (over 400 captive-bred birds have been released into the wild since the 1990's) the population is currently low, but stable. Eradication of cats, rats, and other mammalian predators from the Tuturuatu's habitat and translocation to establish additional populations on islands where the species used to reside will hopefully help this rare shorebird recover.
