Omg. Cheers is only 5 seasons, and Sam and Diane get together at the start of season 2!?

But of course. This was pre-Moonlight. He'll, Sam and Diane, Cheers itself, is probably part of why we don't do that anymore. Nowadays they stretch the UST to 11 to keep us hooked and maybe then they'll give it to us in the finale. (Shit, no wait, that's JAG. OMG!)

Cheers was the bit in-between The Honeymooners/I Love Lucy, when shows were about young families and married couples), and now when characters only ever date the wrong people. They wanted to get through dating because there was some material there, but they knew they could land safely in married life and have a neverending flow of material. Only it didn't work out that way, did it?

Meine Rezension zu der 'Der Schwarm' Folge 7 und 8

So, das wars mit der ersten Staffel zu ‘Der Schwarm’ und mit dem offenen Ende kann man, sofern die Zuschauerzahlen überzeugen, eine zweite Staffel erwarten. Nur nehmen sich die Macher hoffentlich die berechtigten Kritikpunkte zu Herzen. Das Potential hat die Geschichte allemal.

Die siebte Folge ist meiner Meinung nach die Beste, die Handlung nimmt endlich Fahrt auf und es wird spannend. Man verzichtet hier beinahe gänzlich auf zwischenmenschliches Drama, ohne aber auf sinnvolle Konflikte zu verzichten. So hätten auch die restlichen Folgen aussehen müssen, um ein befriedigendes Endergebnis zu erzielen. 

Leider setzt man die positive Entwicklung mit der letzten Folge dann in den Sand. Man spürt förmlich, dass nicht nur bei den Figuren die Zeit knapp ist, sondern auch die Drehbuchautoren wissen nicht recht, wie sie die Geschichte sinnvoll zu Ende bringen sollen. Da dümpelt man mit der Story in den ersten Folgen so dahin, nur um dann zu merken, dass man ja auch ein Ende braucht. Und so überschlagen sich die Ereignisse auf der Thorvaldson und teils merkwürdige Entscheidungen werden getroffen. Jeder halbwegs logisch denkende Mensch kann erahnen, was passieren wird.

In der sechsten Folge wurde ja angedeutet, dass nicht alle von der Reise in die Arktis zurückkehren würden. Leider hat es die Serie nicht geschafft, dass man sich in irgendeiner Art und Weise mit den Figuren verbunden fühlt. Da ist die junge Journalistin Alicia Delaware, die nur ins Koma fällt, ihre Zukunft bleibt offen. Dann ist da noch Luther Ruscovitz, auch eine unbedeutende Nebenfigur. Klaas Heufer-Umlauf bekommt noch einmal ein paar Minuten, um zu zeigen, dass er doch zumindest etwas schauspielern kann. 

Zu guter Letzt stirbt Charlie (Leonie Benesch), die sich warum auch immer opfern muss, um die Besatzung der Thorvaldson zu retten. So ganz habe ich die Sache mit der Rettungsmission nicht verstanden. Außerdem war Charlie als Hauptfigur für mich eher unleidlich. Ich bin nicht wirklich warm mit ihr geworden, teilweise nervte sie mich.

Auch das CGI war allenfalls Mittelmaß. Es gab einige Szenen unter Wasser, die auf mich sehr unnatürlich wirkten. Die Yrr waren nur ein hübsches Leuchten, das im Wasser umher tanzt. Hat mich jetzt nicht vom Hocker gerissen, auch wenn ich verstehen kann, dass die Darstellung von Einzellern alles andere als einfach ist. 

Zusammenfassend kann ich sagen, dass die erste Staffel von ‘Der Schwarm’ mehr eine überteuerte Mischung war aus ‘Das Traumschiff’ und ‘Tatort’, als eine ernstzunehmende Romanverfilmung. Sollte eine zweite Staffel in Auftrag gegeben werden, sollte man die vielen Kritikpunkte zu Herzen nehmen.

The PJO tv show drops Mythomagic in the first episode and my dad was like “no that was Nico’s thing.” And I was like “I think Percy and Grover played it too.” He came back later to tell me he word searched his digital version of the Lightning Thief and mythomagic was not in it. As much as I’m excited about Percy Jackson- this is my dad’s forever media and I forgot to respect that for a moment.

Gods, can I gush about the CGI in the Percy Jackson show for just a minute??

All of it is so fucking good!

The work was gone by ILM or Industrial Light and Magic, who are an incredible effects house and also one of the oldest effects houses there is. ILM was founded in the 1970s by George fucking Lucas to make the effects for the original Star Wars trilogy. They are the reason the original Jurassic Park had CGI in the first place! They worked with Jim Henson on The Dark Crystal and Tobe Hooper on Poltergeist, which has sone crazy awesome effects if you've never seen it. A part of ILM broke off in the 1990s and became fucking PIXAR!!

And Percy Jackson has had just the best looking effects I've seen in a long time. The creature work alone is worth so many awards. The minotaur was amazing.

And the illusion of Chiron is never broken, it's just seamless and perfect.

And don't get me started on Medusa's snakes. They're PERFECT. THEY ACT LIKE REAL SNAKES!!!

And the chimera was beautiful. I loved the decision to give it a cobra's frill.

Also, water is a notoriously difficult effect to do and all the water looks amazing in this show. I bet they pulled some people from the Avatar sequel to help with it.

And Grover's legs never look bad. They're always perfect. I love the decision to keep them exposed the whole time, it adds to the magical feeling of the world while also showcasing how powerful the Mist really is.

And one of my favorite effects HAS to be the way Mrs. Dodds' coat turned into her wings. I saw that and had an out of body experience.

But this most recent episode just blew me away. Specifically with this (these next gifs are by @stevenrogered) :

So, if you didn't know, tracking an effect onto someone's body is incredibly difficult. It's so difficult that CGI artists will often replace someone's body with a 3D model in order to make it easier. That could be what happens here in part, but they can't fake Walker's face.

Props to Walker for sitting as still as humanly possible during this incredibly emotional scene. Him sitting still helps make the tracking of the effect easier since the artists don't have to adjust the effect every frame to account for the slightest movements. Which brings me to the face.

It is so hard to animate human faces and not fall into the uncanny valley, and yes this effect applies to that. Look at the way the gold conforms to the shape of his mouth as he speaks. Look at how it follows the movement of his chin, his cheeks. It's PERFECT. This is an incredibly impressive effect and I wanna just worship whichever overworked and underpaid VFX artist spent hours of their life working on it.

If grimdark isn't a genre, does that mean hopepunk isn't, either?

"Hopepunk" is basically the culmination of nerd culture's mistaken propensity to treat genre as a prescriptive checklist of tropes. The term's proponents invented a definition of a genre of media they believed ought to exist, then went about looking for examples of media that fit that definition. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way – genres in media are something that can only be identified after the fact, as a description of emergent trends in the dialogue between creators. If you try to declare a genre into existence by fiat and work backwards to figure out which media belong to it by going down a checklist of tropes, you just end up with a random grab-bag of works which aren't meaningfully in dialogue with each other.

(Some definitions of "hopepunk" do admittedly somewhat resemble romantic fantasy, particularly the late 1980s to early 1990s strand, but as far as I can tell this is coincidental – it's abundantly clear that most of the term's proponents have never read a Mercedes Lackey novel!)

Meine Rezension zu 'Der Schwarm' Folge 5 und 6

Ich weiß, dass ich mich jetzt wiederholen werde, aber mich beschleicht das Gefühl, dass man in der Chefetage gesagt hat, dass sich 'Der Schwarm' doch bitte an den Durchschnittszuschauer richten soll. Also hat man an allen relevanten Stellen so lange herum geschraubt, bis es passend für die Boomer-Generation ist.

Mir scheint es beinahe, als gäbe es den Klimawandel in der fiktiven Welt von 'Der Schwarm' gar nicht, zumindest ist er nicht relevant in den Augen der Wissenschaftler. Man sollte mal schauen, wie oft der Begriff Klimawandel in der Serie schon gefallen ist. Und dass sogar Forscher verleugnen, dass der Mensch in irgendeiner Art und Weise Schuld trägt, ist bislang der Höhepunkt. Es wird gar nicht wirklich ein Motiv für das Vorgehen der Daseinsform der Yrr genannt. Sie wollen lediglich die Menschen von den Küsten vertreiben.

Warum wurde bislang nicht erwähnt, dass Methan ein Treibhausgas ist? Da lösen sich riesige Methanhydratfelder auf und es wird einiges an Gas freigesetzt, dass den Klimawandel beschleunigt. Tatsächlich sind die Gasvorkommen ein wichtiger Kipppunkt. Erwärmen sich die Meere weiter, wird noch mehr Methan freigesetzt, was den Klimawandel beschleunigt. Wird in der Serie nicht erwähnt, im Buch schon.

Und dann ist da dieses ständige Herumgereise.  Da wird ein Forscher im Privatjet von Kanada nach Genf eingeflogen, Hubschrauber fliegen sowieso munter umher und SUVs scheinen Standardfahrzeuge für Wissenschaftler zu sein. Ich finde, das vermittelt ein wenig ein falsches Bild, aber vielleicht bin ich auch zu sensibel. Aber wenn ich die Serie ins Heute transportieren will, dann kann ich doch zumindest für ein paar mehr Videokonferenzen sorgen. 

Eine kleine Verbesserung gibt es dann doch, die bislang vorhandenen "love interests" (nenne ich jetzt mal so, mangels einer besseren Bezeichnung) sind von der Bildfläche verschwunden. Das ganze wollte man wohl dramatisch gestalten, aber da diese Figuren keine große Bedeutung für die Handlung haben, war ich froh, dass diese Leute endlich aus dem Spiel sind. Sorry, für die harten Worte. Endlich liegt der Fokus auf das Weiterbringen der Handlung.  Auch wenn man sich es nicht verkneifen konnte, zum Ende der sechsten Folge noch ein bisschen Drama aufzubauen. Da ist man geneigt, nachzusehen, ob man nicht aus Versehen den Kanal gewechselt hat. 

Das Ende der Staffel wurde ja ebenfalls schon angedeutet. Einige der Hauptfiguren werden ihr Leben lassen. Blöd nur, wenn keiner dieser Figuren wirklich sympathisch ist, da lässt der Tod einen kalt. Ich möchte noch einmal darauf hinweisen, dass daran die Schauspielerinnen Schuld sind. Die sind sichtlich unterfordert mit dem Drehbuch.
