Duolingo Alternatives by Language
Disclaimer: I haven't used or tested all of them. All resources have different strengths, e.g. Drops being designed for vocabulary. They often aren't full alternatives for Duolingo or formal classes. I just wanted to compile resources for all languages on Duolingo to make the switch easier, especially for the less popular languages.
Feel free to also check out my collection of free textbooks
If you want a more detailed resource list for any of these languages (or perhaps one not listed here) you can send me an ask and I can see what I can do.

If you're upset about duolingo firing it's translators, you should check whatever the equivalent to the BBC is for your target language (or the BBC if that language is English, but if your target language is English and you're reading this I think you're good) because a lot of major national news organizations have resources for learning their language. For example, DW has resources to learn German, NHK has resources for learning Japanese, TV5monde has resources for learning French. They're usually free (or at least, I haven't encountered one that's paid yet) and usually pretty comprehensive (though like with all language learning apps/websites def supplement it with other resources)

Salut!!! I am here to give you some resources that helped me learn french! <3 I will warn you that I learn very informally. I hate taking notes or like seriously studying.
Langauge Transfer- a free podcast lesson that is FANTASTIC for getting a good base in the language and for making connections from english to french. You can listen on youtube or soundcloud
netflix- once you can at least read a bit in french, i would highly recommend the show Lupin on netflix. Watching with french subtitles and then graduating to sans sous-titres will really help! It is a wonderful show and I think that Omar Sy´s accent is really easy to understand
TV5Monde- they have a really good listening comprehension test and then give you resources to improve. You might watch a video about an art exhibit and then answer some questions about it.
Youtube- I can not stress this enough. Not only can you find teachers, but you can also find native french content to practice. BUT the most useful is the comments. That's where you can learn a ton of slang and vocab
I have never been a huge soccer fan er I guess le fút lol. But i am now. Paris-Saint-Germain has a great channel with interviews and games with the players.
CRAZY SALLY
cam summers
Piece of French (teacher)
French Avec Nelly (teacher)
InnerFrench (teacher) and he has a great podcast too!!
Easy French (interviews for people learning french)
lingoni french and french with Alexa (these two were never my cup of tea but are great quality)
Duolingo- some people really do be hating on it, but it has gotten a lot better. I wouldn't recommend it as a only/primary source of learning, but it is a great supplement to get some more vocab in. Plus if you join in on the leaderboards and challenges, it is fun
I do make flashcards as a way to review vocab and I go over them when I get the chance. Quizlet made a lot of their stuff premium :( so i use Brainscape which is pretty great
The best way to get better is to talk!!!! Even talking to yourself for a few minutes a day will do wonders
Bonne chance! <3
oh my, i love you <3 merci beaucoup!
i'll definitely check out all the resources!

23.02.24

French A1-B1 Textbook Recommendation + Resources
For people in the beginner stages of learning French, I would like to recommend a textbook (which cannot, I repeat cannot, be found on a website with millions of textbook resources called 2lib.org).
The textbook is called ‘Vite et Bien- methode rapide pour adultes’ of which I am currently using the 2 edition for complete B1. It comes with a small booklet with corrections (which also cannot be found for free anywhere online wink wink).
For each Unité (of which there are 20 in the B1 textbook) you will get:
A dialogue which introduces the topic, vocabulary + grammar points in use
A couple more different text type examples: examples of newspaper snippets on the topics, emails, short stories etc.
A vocabulary section- this section doesn’t give you translations but includes sentences and paragraphs of how to use different vocab related to the topic
A grammar section which introduces new grammar points each chapter
Exercises section which splits up vocab and grammar: works on things like sentence structure and putting to use everything you learnt and also has listening exercises
Mini exam for each section which is like a short exam to test everything you learnt in that unit
I absolutely love the format of this textbook and it feels natural to learn in this way i.e. learning a little at a time and learning vocab, grammar etc. together and not alone. You really learn things in context which is great.
How I learn with the textbook:
I learn the vocabulary and read the dialogues and texts of one unit. Then I learn the grammar by making notes in my notebook. After I make notes on the grammar point, I search online for exercises on that grammar point.
I like to use lots of different websites to practice grammar but my recommendations are:
Le Point du FLE  Français Facile Bonjour de France
I do the exercises and then I write in my notebook the questions I got wrong with their corrections underneath. I then write small annotations of why they are wrong (e.g. I didn’t agree with the gender, spelling mistake, wrong tense used etc.)
After I’ve completed the grammar I do the exercises and correct them. Whatever I get wrong I will work on the key areas I need to improve. I will then move on to the exam half and correct it after. After that whole process is done, I will repeat it for each unit and review vocab and grammar as I go along: you will see grammar being used more than once in the text examples.
I also supplement my learning with several resources which I like to look at just for fun:
RFI - click apprendre français to find a link of resources for your level TV5Monde Radio France - podcasts and radio stations
Hope this is helpful for those who are starting to learn French, or for those of you who have finished the beginning stages and are unsure of where to go next!
Feel free to message me and ask any questions!

heya! here's that list of french learning resources + shows i promised :^) sorry this took so long, midterms came out of nowhere for me LOL
wordref is a great language-to-language dictionary (it's got a ton of others besides eng/fr) - it gives you multiple context-dependent translations and conjugations for different verbs and nouns, which can be super helpful with all the semantics that come up in french
this is a pretty good collection of practice tests for the DELF, which is a FDL/French as a Second Language proficiency test conducted by the french national ministry of education. there's several levels (A1-C2, with the As being more or less high school-level and C focusing on business and industry terminology). passing the B2 version is generally considered the benchmark for fluency; i took and passed the B2 in 2017 so if you have any specific questions abt that lmk!
tv5monde has some great video-based learning exercises designed for non-native speakers as well. typically an exercise will consist of a video (subtitled in french) and a graded comprehension quiz, which i always found really helpful since you can both hear, read, and apply the vocab all in one place
conjuguemos still strikes fear into my heart even five years out of high school but it is a good quick study tool. it's kind of like quizlet in that it'll give you a subject, verb infinitive, and tense for you to conjugate (hence conjuguemos) and it'll grade your answers
this is a really awesome list of other resources for all kinds of skill levels; it mentions some of the ones i've listed above along with many others that i haven't had a chance to check out.
in terms of films/tv/youtube/tiktok/etc., i'd definitely recommend starting out by watching content with french audio and english subtitles so you can kinda get the hang of listening for certain vocabulary, and then once you're comfortable with that i personally think watching with french subtitles is really helpful, because the range of accents is so wide (i still can't understand québecois accents) and it's nice to be able to follow along. i also think watching french news programs (like tv5, france24, and le monde) can be super helpful!
finally, here's a list of my favorite francophone films and shows, in no particular order: le fabuleux destin d'amélie poulain, les intouchables, l'auberge espagnole, cléo de cinq à sept, fatima, persepolis, lupin
and please feel free let me know if you have any questions, want any advice on where to start, or need any conversation practice! bonne chance :D
THANK YOU SO SO MUCH ILL BE SURE TO CHECK ALL OF THESE OUT!!! ill definitely reach out if i have any questions or need help or practice!! this was so nice of you to put together for me i really really appreciate it<333
