Emma (2009)
Tumblr media
I started it last night and I couldn’t let it go. It’s a great adaptation of the great Jane Austen’s novel “Emma”. The cast is really good, the alchemy between these two left me amazed. At first, I did not imagine Mr. Knightley like that, but Jonny Lee Miller’s interpretation made me like the character even more. It’s really rare for me and I’m just glad it happened.
Tumblr media
Romola Garai was a great discovery for me. She made me smile and laugh just with the expression on her face and in her eyes. She has captured the essence of Emma so well.
I can already say that I will watch it again, it will happen it’s already written.

With costume reuse comes another kind of reuse – fabric. The distinctively colored striped silk fabric has also been used for a costume seen in Return to Cranford and Belgravia.
This waistcoat has been used in several productions depicting the late 18th century through the 19th century. It first turned up in the 1999 TV series The Scarlet Pimpernel, in both the second and third episode of the first season, where it was worn by Anthony Green as Andrew Ffoulkes.
From there, it was briefly used in the 2008 sixth episode of the miniseries John Adams, where Zak Orth wore it as James McHenry.
It appeared next in the 2009 miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, where Robert Bathurst wore the waistcoat as the character Mr.Weston.
Most recently, the piece showed up in the first episode of the 2024 show The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, where Noel Fielding wore it in the title role.

TS Film Thoughts Masterpost
As promised.
Let's start things off -
Breaking News - Headlines about the film
Dec 9 2022 - her film contract makes headlines
Tumblr media
From what I can find, this is the first that anyone knows she is producing a film. There are no details released other than it's a script she wrote and she will be directing the film.
The next we hear is Dec 7, 2023 from the Tennessean --
Tumblr media
It's been crickets, essentially. There are no public details I can find about the film anywhere including cast list, release date, content, ETC.
Interestingly, two days ago -- though uncertain of validity of source -
Tumblr media
I don't have access to puck so cannot confirm what the article says; but this was recent! So; in theory, she finishes her Eras tour and moves directly in to film.
More on how Disney+ ties in our next section...
Who is Searchlight Pictures?
Created April 29, 1994 - formerly known as Fox Searchlight/under 20th/21st Century Fox
Biggest success: Slumdog Millionaire 187 Academy Ward Nominations with 46 wins; 5 Best Picture since 2009 117 Golden Globe Nominations; 51 wins 66 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations; 55 wins 137 Independent Spirit Awards, 54 Wins
Other Notable Films: 12 Years A Slave; Black Swan; Napoleon Dynamite;
20th century fox, prior to the creation of Searchlight, was prominent in the specialty and independent films market in the 1990s; it carried this interest into Searchlight, at least initially.
In 2012, it was incorporated into Murdoch's 21st Century Fox. Barf.
On Dec 14, 2017 Disney put their first bid out on 21st Century Fox/Fox Searchlight. On March 19, 2019 the companies merged and Disney acquired Fox Searchlight; Fox News notoriously split independently. Disney dropped the name Fox; so now we have just Searchlight Pictures. There is also a Searchlight Pictures TV and shorts production, which for the sake of time I will not get into.
For Funsies, here is a short film (Jun 18 2019, after Disney acquired) produced by them called....LAVENDER. About a gay man who has a relationship with a married gay couple. Can't make it up.
Anyway, since merging with Disney especially, the company seems to be LGBTQ friendly.
And yes, Joe Alwyn has worked with Searchlight, with tweets I found dating back to 2018 with Searchlight UK. Make of that what you would like, I have no real objective commentary on the matter.
Taylor as a Director
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also directed the Long Pond Studio Sessions and Miss Americana.
Most of her directorial work has been since the Lover debut. Most of which is very queer coded/sapphic.. and again, make of that what you will.
Appearances/Pap Walks, ETC
Since her split from JA, we have seen her with multiple friends in the film industry. Among these: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Keleigh Teller, Miles Teller, Sophie Turner, Emma Stone...
And dare I say.... Travis Kelce, who seems to want to break his way into the entertainment industry?
Tumblr media
(aside from this headline; his failed dating show, his podcast, his multiple PR deals like with ZenWater... etc. I rest my case).
We also know there has been some B roll footage taken at the Chiefs Games.
Additionally, the media coverage of this relationship has been an absolute f*cking circus; with constant headlines of the two and their "engagement" / relationship dynamics. On Taylor's end, we have had constant references to Bejeweled (where she Ghosts); including Keleigh Teller giving her the opal ring.
The Speculation
Yall, this is my opinion - you can agree, disagree, etc; but I have no insider information. Just thoughts.
She makes her film directorial debut with Searchlight - recently acquired by Disney, who is pro-LGBTQ; and is clearly in deep with business deals with them, as seen on Taylor Nation and her Eras Tour Film.
We have rumors of her beginning her film production at the end of the ERAS tour, along with knowledge of her currently with B roll footage from chiefs games. We have multiple highly papp'ed appearances with her + TK; but also with multiple film stars, including Blake Lively (still not over that photo), Sophie Turner (I do think there's altruism here tbh on TS's end), and Keleigh. If you believe Keleigh is her stand in invisible bride.... Holy shit. Between the opal ring shutdown of the media circus as well as her and TS literally taking a page out of TSHOEH and dressing in character...
My ultimate suspicion is that she's using actual experiences of her current life-highly papp'ed - to tell her story. And that Keleigh is her stand in muse in this film.
I also think the @spade-riddles we've been getting about a final act ending, etc, pertain to her film. I don't have evidence aside from speculation.
I rest my case. Enjoy this post and make of it what you will.

Welcome to the HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN bracket! We have just finished voting on all the HOTTEST Jane Austen Gentlemen and Rakes from all the many TV and Film Jane Austen Adaptations.
After nearly two months of voting we have our Winner! Thank you everyone for taking part and all your propaganda I will be taking a little break for a while but look out for more polls in the future...
All polls—including ongoing polls, previous rounds, mini ask polls—can be found in the #hotjaneaustenmenpoll tag. Every poll in the Hot Jane Austen Men Tournament is tagged with the hot regency man and the year his adaptation was made if you need to search for a hot man in particular.
FAQs:
“Where is [my favorite Jane Austen man]?” Have you checked all the polls in the tag? Have you done a tag search for him? Only some of the actors are tagged but if you search for his adaptation and the year he was in it you should find him! If you still haven’t found him, he probably isn't in this poll.
“WHERE ARE THE HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN. I want to see all the hot men competing in one place! -
The Final
Third Place Poll
Semi-Finals Master List!
Quarter-Finals Master List!
Round Three Master List!
Round Two Master List!
Round One Master List!
“Who is included on this list?” We started with 64 opponents readied their duelling pistols to defend their own hotness but only 8 remain! I included men from Pride and Prejudice 1940/1995/2005, Sense and Sensibility 1971/1995/2008, Emma 1996/1996/2009/2020, Northanger Abbey 2007, Persuasion 1995/2007/2022 and Mansfield Park 1983/ 1999/2007 as well as a couple from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, one from Sanditon and one from Love and Friendship/Lady Susan. Most are the main hero/anti-heroes but there are a few others scattered in too.
Have you included Spin Offs ?”  The only strictly none Jane Austen adaptation I've included men from is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because it is set in the correct time period, the characters are basically the same in terms of personality and I thought the casting was great! In terms of Sandition, Sidney Parker is the only man I have entered as he is mentioned in the book as well as the TV so sadly as much as I love the other Sanditon Men they aren't included!
"Can I submit hot Jane Austen men?”  Submissions are now closed! But my ask is still open for propaganda...
“I have additional propaganda for the hot men!” Great! Send me an ask, tag me in gifsets, fancams etc or reblog the poll and add your propaganda to it. Also feel free to send in any book propaganda!! I'll try to boost as much propaganda as possible
WHy is the propaganda so uneven on this poll? To stay impartial I only add propaganda to the main poll that has been sent in before each round's polls open. If you submit any after then I will reblog or post and add to the winner's propaganda in the next poll. If it's uneven it's because you never sent any in, not because I'm being biased.
"How have you paired up the men ?" I did start to try and vaguely seed the men but I will be honest I did get a bit slap dash towards the end which means a couple of the match-ups are maybe a bit too even but fun I hope!
If you’re submitting propaganda for your hot man, I don’t accept propaganda that is of the actor outside of their Specific Jane Austen Adaptation but I do accept propaganda from them in their respective books. I would love to be tagged in gifsets and fancams, and I'd like to boost propaganda that tells us why your Jane Austen man is your favourite :)
I won’t post or boost negative propaganda. If you really hate that a certain hot man is winning, send me positive propaganda for their hot opponent. I may make exceptions if your propaganda is of another Austen character bad mouthing him though...
If I see repetitive, trolling, and/or bigoted remarks in the comments, I may block you from this bracket. If you want to point out a hot man’s flaws or misdemeanors, that’s fine, but if I see consistent bad-faith trolling, you will be blocked.
On that note—if you have an issue with a poll, offer a solution! I'll do my best to keep the poll happy and fun, and I'll block people being dicks. If you don’t like a poll photo or a description, offer one I can use instead.
“My FAQ isn’t on here :(” send me an ask! I'd love to hear from you guys—just please check these basics first.
Thank you for being here! Enjoy the tournament.
And Thank You @hotvintagepoll for the inspiration!

It aired for six seasons, from February 2003 to June 2009. Greenkeep received critical acclaim for its characters, soundtrack, and exploration of complex themes such as war and free will. It was the first significant project of several prominent actors, including Sean Cassidy, Alex Summers, and Raven Darkhölme, and is also known for its role in introducing Academy Award-winning actor Charles Xavier and his now-husband, director and producer Erik Lehnsherr.

Austen Asks: 6, 12, 18, 24
6. Favorite movie adaptation
If we are including all movie and tv adaptations: I think Emma 2009 still reigns supreme in my heart. There's so many interesting interpretations of the text here that are plausible and yet not necessarily the ones one would think of first? It's a difficult balance of modern and faithful and I think it nails it really well.
If it is only movies... I'll pick a tv one and a cinema one (because I insist these are often separate categories enough).
Surprisingly, for the cinema one, I'm going for Love and Friendship? Epistolary novels are not easy to adapt? and it is an extra challenge to work with a main character like Lady Susan, and make her interesting to follow while not falling into girlboss-gaslight-gatekeep? And it's also not easy to shape Austen juvenilia into something workable this way' But they did and did really well?
I find I really like many of the tv movies XD ITV's Emma doesn't win because its Daviesisms bring it down, but otherwise, I really vibe with it. Northanger Abbey 2007 is much better than it has any right to be. The 1995 Persuasion is iconic for a reason. It's difficult to pick between those three.
12. Least favorite Austen heroine
This one is always a harsh question because I do truly love them all, and it makes it sound like I dislike one of them if I rate it less favorite. But I'll play along and say it is a tie between Fanny and Jane Fairfax, if she counts. It isn't really about finding them dull or boring or too uptight, but that I feel we wouldn't be friends. Sometimes they veer into Darcy's "my good opinion once lost is lost forever", and unlike Elinor, they tend to make little show of concealing it. Which, you know, it is justifiable in their circumstances, but would be exhausting to deal with (as I'd probably feel like I'm walking on eggshells around them. I often make blunders I regret soon enough, but I don't think they'd easily forgive or forget).
18. Moment that made you smile/happy while reading
So many, of course, but the first that comes to mind is Knightley's proposal. Yes, yes, we all talk about "if I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more" but what about "for dearest you will always be, whatever the event of this hour’s conversation, my dearest, most beloved Emma" and "you know what I am.—You hear nothing but truth from me." and "Yes, you see, you understand my feelings—and will return them if you can."? the whole thing is such an in-crescendo of joy and I clearly need to reread soon.
24. Already answered, but let's this time give a shoutout to Miss Bates, poor, hated miss Bates! She's doing the absolute best of a really trying and bleak life situation and she doesn't get enough credit for it, in this world of Mrs Bennet apologia and even Mr Collins apologia!!!
From this ask game.

'No,' he calmly replied, 'there is but one married woman in the world whom I can ever allow to invite what guests she pleases to Donwell, and that one is –'
'Mrs. Weston, I suppose,' interrupted Mrs. Elton, rather mortified.
'No –  Mrs. Knightley; and, till she is in being, I will manage such matters myself.'

One dance
Tumblr media
Part of Seven Days of Izzy Hands week
Izzy Hands x Male Reader (Developing Friendship, Developing Feelings, both Aromantic Asexual)
Summary: Izzy Hands chooses you as his dance partner at a Regency ball to get Edward off his back, and finds in you the hope that had been missing from his life for years.
(If you want to see the dance this fic is referencing, type Emma 2009 dance scene into YouTube. I'm a fan of Jane Austen and adaptations of her works, what can I say?)
Word count: 1,721
Fic link: One dance - Horatio_Hands - Our Flag Means Death (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
“Come on, Iz! Have at least one dance!”
Izzy Hands rolled his eyes at his friend.
“There’s plenty of other people not dancing. The floor doesn’t need my clumsy footwork.”
Edward raised both of his eyebrows theatrically.
“Yes but all of those other people have had at least one dance. And here you are with not even one under your belt! People might start to believe the rumours…”
Oh, Izzy was fully aware of the rumours. That he would spend the rest of his life alone, preferred it that way, liked nothing better than his own company and of those few within his inner circle. His disdain for these rumours were self-evident by the fact that he had ignored them for years and carried on his merry way.
Izzy wouldn’t describe himself as happy with his lot in life, but it was his own and that was good enough.
“You and I know to ignore them…”, Izzy reminded the other man, taking a swig from his glass.
Edward made a little noise of frustration next to him, and Izzy hid a victorious smile behind his sleeve. He did enjoy riling up his friend when he could. There was very little other sport to be had on most days.
“Just dance with someone for me, then. Call it an early birthday present.”
The older man stamped down the urge to sigh or roll his eyes again, merely glancing over at his friend to confirm his suspicions: Edward wouldn’t let him get away with not dancing with someone. And, even worse, if Izzy didn’t pick the man himself, Edward would pick for him. Never again.
“Fine”, Izzy conceded, turning away again as Edward beamed him a smile.
“Who’s the lucky fella?”
That was easy. Izzy Hands had spotted you a second ago mingling by one of the windows, staring out at the night sky. You had been seated next to each other at dinner and even Izzy had to admit that your conversation was more interesting than that of the people he normally had to endure.
Arguably you could still say no to a dance, and then Izzy would have to think of a plan B that may or may not require retrieving Fang from his quiet place in the corner of the room where he had been for most of the evening.
But only time would tell.
“Mr Darcy”, Izzy said, motioning toward you with his glass. He then fobbed that glass off onto Edward and began walking away.
“Wish me luck”, Izzy murmured over his shoulder but by that point he was too far away for Edward to call back to unless he wanted to cause a scene with the noise.
In and out of the crowd Izzy Hands wove, ignoring the stares he received at his out of fashion suit. The closer he got to you, the more Izzy slowly began to be pulled in by you again. There was something oddly calming about your appearance, and something intriguing as well. You’re just here for a dance, Izzy had to remind himself. Maybe some more conversation if you are lucky. Don’t get sucked in.
As he neared you, Izzy called out.
“Mr Darcy. Admiring the stars, are we?”
You turned round with an easy going smile on your face, not even seeming to be shaken by the man’s sudden arrival. If anything, you looked happy about it.
“Ah, Captain Hands! I was, if you would care to join me.”
Don’t mind if I do, Izzy thought to himself as he inclined his head politely in thanks. He joined you at the window, focusing out past the reflections of the candles to the night sky and found himself drawing in his breath in a small gasp. The sky was so clear that all the stars in the world seemed to be visible, maybe even a few planets too.
“Amazing”, Izzy found himself proclaiming, seeing you smile at him out of the corner of his eye.
“Indeed. The sights haven’t been this good for a long while. I confess it has rather stopped me from dancing as much as my friends should like me too.”
Ah. It seems like Izzy wasn’t the only one.
“I confess that my lack of dancing has been through spite rather than for a more valid reason like yours.”
The laugh that you let out did a funny thing to Izzy’s heart. Calm yourself, man.
“Some might call mine an invalid reason. But I’m too content to care.”
Izzy chanced a glance at you and you really did look content. He almost envied you. Unsure of what else to say, Izzy returned his gaze to the window. He could feel you looking at him for a moment, his cheeks flushing under the attention.
“I may have a scheme that could benefit us both, Captain Hands. What say you to a dance?”
Well, that was easier than I expected it to be.
“Lead the way, sir”, Izzy said with a small bow, motioning toward the dance floor where other couples were starting to congregate. You led the way, looking back to make sure that Izzy was following you.
"Ginny's Market", an announcer at the head of the hall called out, and Izzy breathed out a breath of relief. He actually knew this one. It would require you both getting closer to each other than Izzy had planned, but that needn't be a bad thing. You seemed to know it too judging by the smile that came to your face. Even Izzy had to admit that you had a lovely smile. He felt quite privileged to have caused a few of them so far.
The pair of you gained a few interested glances from onlookers as you took your places opposite each other. It felt oddly nice to stand up with a man in a crowd of people, to have Izzy’s own wants plain for other people to see.
And then the music was starting, and Izzy's mind was immediately split between wanting to enjoy your radiant smile and the need to concentrate on bowing to you.
Then the two of you were dancing. Stepping forwards, and then backwards. Joining hands and spinning in a slow circle, the first touch of your hands electric and then the rest was pleasant warmth. As you wrapped your arms around each other, your other hands above your heads, Izzy couldn't help but let his gaze flicker down to your lips whilst you were steadfast in your gaze, a little uptick of your lips the only indication that you had noticed. Then your arms were linked and you were pacing back and forth, both of you moving so fluidly and in time with each other that it was as if you had been dancing for years.
It was at this point that as the two of you moved places up the crowd Izzy caught sight of Edward, swaying in time with the music with a ridiculous grin on his face. Damn him, of course he was watching.
Although when you came back into Izzy's field of view and were bowing so adorably again, Izzy couldn't bring himself to care. The candlelight reflected in your eyes when you got closer again, showing brilliant shades of blue. Your hands fitted together almost perfectly, warmth felt even through gloves. Your heights were perfectly matched so there was no awkwardness when you twirled, easily inhabiting the others' space. On the pull away Izzy noticed you flicking a glance down to his lips and cheered internally for a hope that flickered into life like a candle flame.
Moving up the crowd again, Izzy was even more focused on you. Even you had stopped looking around at the crowd, keeping your gaze fixed on Izzy and constantly offering him little smiles that showed just how much you were enjoying this. Izzy had to admit that he was enjoying himself too, just letting the moment overtake him and draw him in.
He hadn't enjoyed himself whilst dancing like this for a very long time. But right now, in this room with this intriguing man before him, Izzy was content.
The only thing that could bring down his mood at this stage was the realisation that there was only one more rotation of the circuit before you would be stopping this elegant dance of yours. So, in a uniquely non Izzy like way, Izzy Hands dared to dream.
He allowed a little more warmth to flood his gaze, grasped your hands more firmly and squeezed. Much to his delight, you squeezed back, even chancing getting closer than you had done before when you twirled around together. You seemed to be just as into this dance as Izzy was, and the old captain could barely believe it.
All too soon you had both returned to your original places on the dance floor and were bowing to each other once more, perhaps just a bit of longing in your gaze before you joined the rest of the dancers in applauding the musicians.
That just left Izzy to offer his hand to you and for you to take it willingly, allowing yourself to be led back to the window you had been staring out of originally.
"Well!", you started to say as Izzy gently dropped your hand, "You dance very well, Captain Hands. Thank you for that treasure."
Once again Izzy Hands felt his cheeks flushing, delighting in having been able to please so effortlessly.
"Thank you. Rarely has a dance been that enjoyable."
You toasted the man with your reclaimed glass before taking a swig, maintaining eye contact all the while. God, Izzy was fascinated by you. He could do little to deny it now, not when he had been so open during the dance.
Perhaps…
Yes, perhaps something could be made here after all.
"Would you agree to being introduced to my friend Edward? He'll want to meet you after the spectacle we just made."
You smiled, nodding.
"I would be delighted to."
You paused, smile widening.
"Perhaps we could take a walk together to the coast sometime. Get to know one another better."
For the first time in a long time, Izzy Hands felt genuine hope flood his heart.
"I would like that very much", Izzy said with a fond smile.

Roundtable: Glee (2009-2015)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh dear. Where to even begin....
What we now know and love (or hate) as Glee began as a screenplay for a feature film of the same name by Ian Brennan. The screenplay then circulated to working TV writers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, and the three soon began writing a full television season based on Brennan's original screenplay. The series was very quickly picked up by FOX, following the success of another musical-themed program: American Idol.
So has been said about Glee in retrospect, from recent TikToks dissecting problematic moments in the show to a docuseries addressing speculations of dissent among castmates. While this has been interesting fodder to engage with online, I do feel that we have reached a collective memory of Glee that has strayed from the original tone and intention of the show. This is also thanks to the complete diversion the show took in its later seasons after new writers were hired and the show tried to keep up with its own rapidly growing popularity.
Tumblr media
Glee’s initial charm was similar to the central appeal of American Idol: a glimmer of hope in a  time of economic hardship through an underdog story. Underneath its surface-level wackiness and off-kilter dialogue, Glee was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek satire;  a "postmodern musical" in the words of Ryan Murphy. Based in Ohio, its characters grapple with the ongoing economic recession and try to find hope and resilience in their downtrodden circumstances through the imaginative powers of the songs they sing. The show’s humor and central conflicts in its first season are largely derived from disputes from the “big guys” punching down on the “little guys.” In fact, the rivalry between optimistic Glee Club instructor Will Schuester and absolutely unhinged cheer coach Sue Sylvester can be read alongside the country’s broader economic battles.
The mention of these two crucial characters brings me to an analysis of the show in conversation with the arguments of Robynn Stillwell in her work “Dual-Focus Strategy in a Serial Narrative: Smash, Nashville, and the Television Musical Series.” For this analysis I will refer to the first and last episodes of Glee’s first season, titled “Pilot” and “Jouney to Regionals,” respectively, pulling some contextual elements from episodes in-between if needed.
Dual-Focus Narrative
Tumblr media
A defining stylistic feature of an episode of Glee is its introductory monologue, in which a character provides a voiceover of their unique, hilarious perspectives on the events of the episode to come. Throughout the episode, other characters might also provide a voiceover monologue with contradictory opinions, or introduce the episode’s B-plot. It is through these little snippets of each character’s perspective that the show manages its large ensemble cast and creates an advanced version of Stillwell’s described “dual-focus” narrative, with a different dual pairing each episode. This ability to navigate the complex relationships between many characters is something that is unique to Glee’s episodic format, and likely could not be achieved in its fullest in a film or stage musical.
While the show’s “Pilot” sets up the central romances between Finn & Rachel and Will & Emma, these romantic pairings do not completely comprise the “dual-focus” of the episode. Instead, we are given voiceover sequences from Will Schuester, Rachel, and Finn such that the show is dually-focused on the lives of adults versus teenagers in a middle-American high school during the economic recession. In this way, Glee pokes fun at the triviality of high school popularity while also likening these struggles to the conflicts among the adult characters, such as budget cuts to faculty but an increased budget for athletics and Sue’s cheer team. In other words, the concept of an "underdog" is timeless and not age-specific. Through its strange satirical lens, Glee celebrates youth and is reliant on the notion of second-chances, evident though the name Will Schuester gives to his new Glee Club: New Directions.
Inevitable Couplings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my opinion, the pilot of Glee has an absolutely top-tier set up for its romantic interests, the jock Finn Wolfhard and the geeky theater girl Rachel Berry. The show takes advantage of its musical framework, two characters are set up as opposites through their first ever songs before they even interact in the episode.
To audition for Will’s New Directions, Rachel sings “On My Own,” a musical theater song from Lesa Miserables. She introduces her song with a chipper, contrived introduction and her audition is polished with a clear, classically trained voice. Moments later, Finn’s voice is heard in a much less formal manner, as Will hears him singing in the shower (not even gonna touch that one). His voice is free and imperfect, singing a classic rock song he adored as a child. Through these musical scenes, Rachel and Finn are contrasted in every way, from their personalities to their apparent levels of vocal training to their style of song. The show relies on our instincts to assume that opposites attract without any lines explicitly hinting at the romance with these two characters, so when the two sing together in “Don’t Stop Believing” at the end of the episode (which literally made me cry), their voices complement one another well and there is palpable chemistry as the characters dance together gleefully.

I would also be remiss if I did not mention “Klaine,” the iconic romance between Kurt and Blaine that begins in season two. The show sets this romance up in a very similar way, as Kurt admires Blaine’s suave confidence in an accepting environment which contrasts the homophobic environment Kurt experiences at McKinley High. They are, again, musically opposite, as Blaine often sings pop songs with an entire Glee club of boys while Kurt often sings musical theater ballads alone. Still, these opposites are not as apparent as Finn and Rachel’s, and the show now expects us to anticipate a romance based heavily on the fact that these are the only two gay male characters in the show thus far. While this romance was quite groundbreaking for its time, the show was still able to maintain its mainstream popularity by applying heteronormative frameworks onto queer characters, much like the Western musical frameworks we discussed last week.
Musical Fantasies
youtube
youtube
Music is the heart of Glee, adding texture to an otherwise dull environment. As the show progresses musical numbers take many adventurous forms, with numbers outside the diegesis that replicate famous music videos to conversations through song that blur the lines of diegesis.
Even with all the flashiest numbers, I think nothing embodies the escapist quality of music in Glee more than its backstage numbers, where we watch the characters perform as their true selves. At the end of the Pilot, the original six Glee Club members perform “Don’t Stop Believin’” on their own after news of Mr. Schue’s departure from the position. Their singing and dancing is free and uninhibited as much of the secondary characters watch. Most importantly, the number inspires a lurking Mr. Schue to change his mind and continue instructing the club. Music functions within the narrative as a site of hope for characters in unfortunate situations.
Through this, the show also epitomizes its sense of neoliberal progressivism, ultimately suggesting that we can all come together and sing away our differences.

An unfinished and not fully accurate timeline of the NMJ Lads 2000-2012 (Tim-centred tbh)
Summer 2000: Alex goes to Edinburgh with 'How To Avoid Huge Ships'
Academic year 2000-2001: Mark in year ? of uni, Alex in his final year of uni year of uni, Tim has just graduated. Tim decides to do a play because he didn't do one in his final year at uni.
Alex was also doing stand up in another strand of Footlights (I think, idk how it works)
2000 (Cambridge, term 1)- Alex writes a panto of Treasure Island, Tim auditions and gets a role. Performances are late Nov-early Dec. Tim also auditioned for Bouncers by John Godber. He got both roles and fortuitously decided to do the panto.
(I don't think Alex and Tim became close yet)
2001 (Cambridge, term 2) - Tim does the Spring Review (sketch show) and starts to write a bit (was Mark in this??)
2001 (Cambridge, term 3) - Tim and Mark audition to be in the Footlights Summer Tour, which is what Emma Thompson, High Laurie et al did. They perform at Edinburgh and are nominated for Best Newcomer. It's directed by [friend who still directs plays w Tom Basden]
I don't know if the Spring and Summer sketch show / team are/were the same as each other but Tim conflates the whole year into one when telling any stories about it. Not sure either if they figured out about Tim not being a student during the Spring or the Summer.
2002: Tim and Dinky Donk contribute to an EP of Concrete Cow sketch show on Radio 4
Tim and Mark move to London. IIRC Tim moved back to Cambridge after a bit (maybe after losing his job at Hamley’s?), not sure when he moved back to London - suspect 2003/2004 as he’s still doing stuff in Cambridge at that point.
2002: Mark wins the Telegraph Open Mic Award. Tim's stand up career starts and ends in the space of 10 ok to terrible gigs
2003: Making Fish Laugh - Alex’s first solo show (Tim as assistant). Nominated for Best Newcomer
2003: Alex is on Brain Candy on BBC3 (stand up variety show)
2003: Mark and Tim direct the Footlights tour show(?) Starring some future Inbetweeners
2004: Mark's first 24 hour show (Tim as assistant). Mark gets engaged. Mark also does a show with Rhod Gilbert.

2005: Alex’s third show When in Rome (Tim as assistant)
At some point Tim lives with Alex (and wife?)
2005-2007 (?): Tim performs in Cowards in Edinburgh (they also did it in London and in early days Alex, Mark and Rick Edwards were involved)
2006: Mark wins the inaugural Edinburgh Panel Prize and Time Out Critics Choice Award. He is nommed for the Barry Award (Melbourne)
2006: Mark starts appearing on Mock the Week and other panel shows
2006-2008 (+Xmas 2009): Tim adapts All Bar Luke for Radio 4
2006-2007 Alex and Dinky Donk try to meet someone from every nationality. I don't know if they get a show out of this!
2006: Mark and Tim are in Time Trumpet
2007: Mark writes 2 pilots. One stars Tom Basden and the summary sounds suspiciously like Tim's life at that time
207: Mark starts his Radio 4 show with Tim and Basden
2007: We Need Answers at Edinburgh
2007: Alex's fourth show Birdwatching at Edinburgh

He said during ep 1 of Taskmaster that he had no space for anything but kept the lintel(?) From his Edinburgh show. In the Taskmaster podcast Josh said Tim implied he was homeless but he would have been referencing the fact that he had a box room’s worth of living space (I included this because Josh thought Tim was lying in the show but i’m pretty sure he wasn’t).
