There's just something so fascinating about the media's obsession with jumping in front of bullets.

Let me explain.

Such a violent and traumatising image becoming a trope has made for some of the most poignant scenes I've ever seen, and there's something so inherently beautiful about why. The decision to take a bullet or sword or punch for another isn't at all a decision, it's raw instinct. It has to be; nobody's reaction time is really that quick, nobody's survival instincts that foolish. It's a gut reaction when you see someone (or something) you love put in a place of inescable danger, and every subconscious instinct in your body decides no.

In a real world sense, if you saw someone injured for the sake of another, you wouldn't see a bone-deep display of devotion, you'd probably think "oh, fuck, call an ambulance". But in media, everything is a device, and I'm simply fascinated by the fact that something so raw and instinctual has become one of the most recognisable and poignant displays of unbridled love. That's it. And it wrecks me every time.

Pale Arc 10

So I gather that Pale has finished. In a way, this takes some timing pressure off of me: while I have not been liveblogging at a particularly speedy rate, I've been aware that more Pale kept being added faster than I was catching up. Now any time I read a chapter I'm actually catching up, as opposed to losing ground! I would love to say that I'll be picking up the pace from here on, but I said that last time and it was blatantly false, and also I think work will be busy for the next few weeks.

I've also been going back and archiving my liveblogs locally, just in case, which has reminded me how different my format was for the first arcs: I switched from end of chapter recaps to live reactions in early arc 4. No wonder I was going through chapters so quickly back then!

And I have a favor to ask if anyone wouldn't mind: I know there are stats floating around about Pale's length, but I'm worried about running into spoilers. Could someone let me know a) how many arcs there are b) what the total word count is and c) what the word count is as of where I am?

Housekeeping aside, thoughts on the arc:

Interesting structure, reminds me a bit of Worm's Sentinel arc

Really effective at building my knowledge of and engagement in the various new Kennet Others

Lots of reveals: Toadswallow's interlude blew my mind from a worldbuilding perspective, and Edith's unwrapped another layer of the mystery

Snowdrop and Avery! No thoughts, just feelings.

So now we know that Edith was for sure involved in the murder (which at this point was obvious, and has been pretty clear since the beginning). But then there's the immediate twist that she's not running it, or even seemingly part of the main group of this scheme. I do like this structure, where there's an obvious suspect from the beginning, it turns out to have been her, and it feels like a bit of a letdown, only for there to be another twist. I think a lot of mystery novels/tv shows do this probably? But on the scale of a single book/episode, not something as sprawling as Pale.

Actually, going back to those early arcs where I was doing a lot of theorizing, one of my guesses on how someone could arrange the Carmine Beast's death without having to reveal or lie about it was "There is an obvious killer, but they’re a fall guy acting on someone else’s behalf". Which it looks like it is! Edith is suspicious from the beginning, has no way around hiding her involvement while being honest and open, and the plan was probably for her to get caught from the start (I mean, maybe the real mastermind(s) didn't think the girls would get this far, but it does feel like Edith was expendable).

But now we're back to trying to figure out members of this conspiracy, knowing that Maricica is involved. There are three basic options for conspirators: 1) original Kennet Others 2) new Kennet Others (hid their involvement from the start and used recruitment to come in) and 3) people outside of Kennet.

I can't think of anyone outside of Kennet we've met who makes sense for that, so that idea might come down to "new character", which seems unsatisfying, so I'm going to skip theorizing about it.

Characters I don't think are involved: Tashlit, John, Alpeana, Toadswallow, Nibble and Chloe, Crooked Rook, Miss, Guilherme. We've seen inside almost all their heads, Edith and Maricica seem opposed to them in private conversation. Putting a caveat on Guilherme because Faerie.

Matthew could go either way, he's been involved with Edith's hostility but clearly doesn't know everything.

Charles is suspicious to me based on vibes and ability to lie, Bluntmunch seems to not be trusted by Toadswallow, Cig is working with Edith but it seems like a recent arrangement, Montague is very convenient to the conspirators but seems friendly, no idea about Lis, Ken, Jabber, or the new goblins.

1: Spin Cylinder

I don’t believe in karmic retribution or any other concept of universal balance. Things don’t work that way and we’re living proof. There are plenty of people doing objectively terrible things and still casually wandering around like life is always going to be kind to them because it always has, still sleeping like babies on beds made of money.

2: Project Aria

He smiles like a high-quality secret. “No-one asked you to break anyone’s fingers. And they’re very special plants.”

3: Project Darwin

Photos flashed up on TV news segments with serious-looking police officers and anxious pleas from her parents to let their daughter go, to let her come home to her family who loved her. Everyone who knew Amber was positive that she would not have run away. This was an abduction. Our lives were a crime scene.

4: Spin Cylinder

We decided to walk from the restaurant back to the apartment through what we were warned by the taxi driver who took us in the opposite direction is not a safe area. That isn’t the mistake I’m taking about. We didn’t make a mistake. We made a choice.

5: Project Aria

I don't think the gym or weapons training or anything like that’s going to make a positive difference right now, so I go for the one thing that never fails to lift me out of a dark place. "Hey, Zola." She turns to look at me but doesn't unwind herself much. "Yeah?" "Want to get fucked up?"

6: Project Darwin

Spring danced in shades of green and yellow across Hawk’s Glen, the last of the snowdrops replaced by daffodils and the sun rising earlier to greet days that no longer pinched our cheeks with cold fingers.

Life’s Little Comforts

I saw someone else do this, so I had to try as well! 😊💜. some of these have two answers 😅…

Comfort movie: 

The Ying Yang Master: Dream of Eternity.

I watched the movie when it first came out, and absolutely fell in love with it. It has a perfect mix of everything I like! So I always come back to it, just for a good rewatch.

Comfort song: 

Wishes (Instrumental) by Jamie Miller. (I think It’s from the snowdrop soundtrack?)

I stumbled upon this instrumental by complete accident, but since that moment it’s been a part of my everyday life. I put it on when I just need a calming sound that’s still enjoyable to listen too. An absolute beautiful piece of music.💜

Comfort food: 

Rouladen

it’s a German dish my dad makes from scratch. It’s thinly sliced beef wrapped around pickles, bacon and mustard. Usually served with pickled red cabbage. 😋

Comfort place: 

Simple answer, my house surrounded by my family. Nothing is better then that. 😊

Comfort book: 

Now this is a tough one. My first thought was the Ascendence Series by Jennifer A Neilsen. I’ve read the entire series multiple times. It’s one of my absolute favourites! (Good whump and good story, highly recommend)

But as of late, I’ve begun reading a book called The Uncertain Soilder by Karen Bass. Now I havnt read an actual book in quite a while, as I’ve always been to busy. Recently my mental health has taken a slight decline, so I’ve been taking care of myself a little more. And as reading used to be one of my favourite past times, I’ve started again! It’s gotten to the point that when ever I feel Even the slightest bit to anxious i just pick up the book and read a page. It helps so much! (I picked this book because: 1) it looks cool and 2) it’s set basically where I live! Which i find interesting. 😆)

Anything from the DMBJ Universe

They’re just amazing shows with so much beautiful bromance and SO MUCH WHUMP, that I’m constantly rewatching them. It always brings me comfort when it’s on😌

A Witcher Wheel of the Year will be a series of events all through the year 2023. 

There will be prompts based on every festival of the Wheel of the Year, and you are invited to create fics or art of whatever strikes your fancy for those. Rowan liked to think that over the last fourteen years he had started to perfect aspects of parenting. After all, he did have five children. And had spent most of those fourteen years dealing with every problem under the sun— from kids misbehaving, to illnesses, to sneaking boys into the house. He prided himself on being an understanding father, never judging his children until he had the full story. But he had to admit that when Maia had come home that evening— drunk— he had not expected their conversation. Nor had he expected the guilt and anger that had come along with it— and the absolute uselessness he felt as well.

At nineteen, Maia was as independent as a girl could get. She had moved out to go to a university five hours away and visited only when she felt necessary. Although she still loved to see her parents and she was a doting sister to her younger siblings, she liked to have her space and had always held everyone at a little bit of a distance.

Rowan had stayed up to put Aelin at ease. His wife worried Maia might need someone to look after her when she got home. So he had sat in the living room flicking through random books and flipping through the various TV channels until he had heard the familiar click of the door and then the cursing as Maia stumbled inside. He got up from his chair, groaning a little as he did, before meeting his daughter in the hallway.

Although she was legally allowed to drink now, she still gave him a guilty expression as she pulled off her shoes, heavily relying on the wall to keep her propped up.

“I promise I didn’t drink that much.” She slurred. Although he words seemed to be a little forced and the grin on her face not quite meeting her eyes.

Rowan chuckled and offered his arm to her. “Let’s get you some water before you wake the entire house.”

Maia clung to his arm, Rowan placing her down on the chair in the kitchen as he went to the sink and filled a glass. He didn’t say anything as he sat next to her and watched as she knocked back the whole thing and then asked for another.

“Did you at least have a good time?” He asked.

“Arobynn’s son was there.” She said carefully. Something in her voice changing as she said the words.

Rowan stilled and he gripped the glass tightly, his knuckles whitening. “I thought he moved to the city.”

Maia shrugged. “Guess he was back for the holidays too.” His daughter looked like she wanted to say something more, but thought better of it and sipped her water again.

Rowan didn’t want to push it. He knew that it never went well when he forced any of his kids to talk when they didn’t want to. So he ignored the look she had on her face and went to the fridge instead and pulled out some leftovers from dinner. “Want some food?”

Maia nodded. Suddenly very quiet.

He moved around the kitchen quietly and eventually placed the steaming food in front of her. “Your brothers wondered if you’d take them swimming tomorrow.”

Maia nodded once and moved her food around the plate. Rowan was going to let her be, leaving her to eat in peace. But Maia put her fork down a little too forcefully and then turned to him, her eyes sadder than before.

“Daddy…”

Rowan was beside her in an instant. Tucking her hair behind her ear and wiping away the tears that were starting to fall down her face. “What happened?”

Maia shook her head and stood from her chair. She didn’t go far though, merely moving towards the sink and leaning against it as she stared out into the dark garden and the fields beyond. Her body was shaking and Rowan could see the tears that were still falling down her face.

“Snowdrop,” Rowan said ever so gently, “you can talk to me.”

“I—“ She turned around and buried her head into his chest.

Rowan’s own heart was breaking. He hated his children being sad. He hated watching them cry and not being able to do a single thing about it. And it hurt even more when it was Maia— she was always such a strong person, just like Aelin— so seeing her vulnerable and unhappy like this hurt him too.

“I had too much to drink,” Maia whispered, “he cornered me—“

Rowan didn’t hear what she said next. All he could see was red. His ears were ringing and he staggered back a step, trying to comprehend what his little girl was saying to him. He shook his head in disbelief and then ran a hand through his hair, his eyes turning watery too.

“I didn’t know what to do.”

Gods.

His baby girl.

He was meant to protect them. He was supposed to be there for them and make sure they were safe and happy, he had to make sure that they never had to experience anything like this. But his beautiful, strong, lovely daughter was telling him something he couldn’t fathom— something that was breaking him in two.

Rowan took in a deep breath and finally met Maia’s gaze. “Are you hurt?” His voice was like steel, he was trying more than anything to keep his temper level, to not scare her any more than she was.

Maia shook her head. “He didn’t get to—“ she choked on the words, “you know. I… I managed to get away from him before it went that far. But...” She sniffed, her tears falling harder.

Rowan didn’t need to know exactly what that boy had done to her. He didn’t need to hear her say the words or expand. The fact he had touched her in any way without her permission was more than enough information for him.

“He said that if I told anyone he’d make sure my life was ruined.”

“You know I won’t let anything happen to you.” Rowan didn’t have the words like Aelin might have. He was barely able to keep himself together right now. But he managed to bring Maia in for another hug, his arms coming around her gently, careful not to make her feel trapped. “I’ll make sure he pays for this.”

Maia shook in his arms as she cried. She gripped his t-shirt tightly in her hands and sobbed into him. His heart was hurting. No one had prepared him for this. The books he had read and the movies he had watched had never prepared him for something this tragic. Where there was no amount of kind words or hugs that could rid his child of the hurt and the despair she would be feeling.

“Maia, do you want me to get your mum?” He asked softly, stroking her hair and pulling away a little.

His daughter shook her head. “I just want to shower. I feel— I don’t know. Dirty.”

Rowan nodded in understanding. “What can I do?”

Maia wiped her face and tried to smile. It was weak and not at all like her, but Rowan felt some sort of relief mixed in with the anger that she could manage to smile at all.

“I don’t know. I think right now,” she shrugged, tears forming again, “right now I just need my dad.”

played my little karaoke and undoubtedly moved on from looking back at having been a brony with a lil bit of cringe to fully looking back at it with protective gratefulness. ofc the fact that i was in my early teens definitely helps but regardless i realize that it really was objectively great.

what's cool to note is that i have no lingering attachment to the tv show itself, it's the fandom im talking about. it's no news that it was a huge phenomenon/fandom but it truly was thriving, active and FULL of CREATIVITY. like how could i ever regret having been into it, for the fan songs alone. lullaby for a princess????? anthropology???? eile monty??? DISCORD????? and a bunch of more or less popular ones that nevertheless impacted me personally. not to mention the actual songs from the show which despite what i said about not caring for it, objectively slap. thank you daniel ingram.
