K-Dramas recommendations & short reviews

Because I've watched way too many to not make a list. Warning: I like romance and fantasy a bit too much.

These shows made me cry. 10/10. Five stars. Recommend to anyone. They live in my mind rent-free:

Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022) - Attorney Woo is such a wonderful person, I love her character. I can't say much about the representation, but I like that it opens up the conversation around autism & neurodivergence, discrimination and prejudice, particularly in work environments. I rarely like shows about law or lawyers but I was surprisingly engaged with the cases and the story. It deserves a second season. (The only thing I don't like about this show is they're pushing for a MinWoo and Choi Su-Yeon ship. Which huh--disrespectful.)

Hotel Del Luna (2019) - A great place to start with k-dramas if you like paranormal fantasy. This show has such a special place in my heart. I wanted a different ending but I am okay with it because it was a tight narrative. The main character is iconic (Man-Wol please step on me). The show has amazing sets, AMAZING costumes, an amazing OST, amazing and heartbreaking performance by Yeo Jin Goo. The main couple is so soft; like they're such good friends and coworkers and gentle with each other (eventually). It's enemies to reluctant friends to lovers. It's perfect for asexual viewers who want more than physicality in their romance shows. Cons: the secondary characters' goodbyes and backstories left a little to be desired. A few other nitpicks like Chang-Seong is the one to suggest the main character a new hobby instead of her just discovering it by herself.

It's Okay to Not Be Okay (2020) - Also a good place to start with k-dramas. This show is a lesson in good narrative; this has perfect writing & storytelling. The cast is so good. The female lead is an icon. The character work I excellent. The mental health issues are so well addressed and it taught me a lot about mental health I wasn't aware of. Each small minor character plays a very important thematic role. (The villain isn't the best thing ever but she serves her role in the themes and plot.) The production and the storytelling with the children's book animations are just *heart eyes*. The OST is so good too. You need to watch this to understand how good a k-dramas can be. A must-watch.

Goblin: The Lonely and Great God (2016) - This is the most iconic fantasy/paranormal k-drama ever. A lot of current tropes were started here I think (including the weird k drama last-episode time jump separation of the main couple). This show broke me. You will cry. The bromance and comedy are amazing here too. Gong Yoo and Dong Wook Lee have great chemistry. Main female lead is so cute and her character is so heartwarming. The ending felt a bit rushed. The death, existential related stuff with the grim reapers and such is so good tho.

Business Proposal (2022) - Best rom-com ever! (Well, it could be gayer tbh.) It's my new comfort show. I already watched it twice. It's campy, hilarious, chaotic, iconic and messy in a way that feels like real life (but obviously played up for drama and comedy). Excellent character work. The love interest is definitely written by a woman. Gorgeous cast (Sejeon omg I have a crush, but also the others). It was too short! I would have loved another episode, and more of Grandpa and Ha-Ri. Warning: this has the weird kdrama last-episode time jump couple separation.

W: Two Worlds (2016) - A young resident medic accidentally finds her way inside the webcomic her father created. Like, that premise is killer. We have Lee Jong Suk at his finest here; the character fits him so well. He was born to play a lead. This show has amazing meta-commentary on writing, authorship, and existential crisis. The confrontation between the webcomic character Kang Cheol and the author is insane! The main couple is an epic pair. Would rewatch. High wump value. Cons: The second part could have been more swoony with the romance, Kang Cheol kind of became a bit cold. (A warning: this show also has the k drama weird last-episode time jump couple separation.)

Would recommend with popcorn, I rate them 8/10:

Crash Landing on You (2019) - Really good. The main couple has the best chemistry I've ever seen. It's not that much of a personal fave show, but still pretty awesome and will tug at your heart. It got a bit overly dramatic in the last episodes and again, has that k-drama last episode weird time jump couple separation, but here it actually makes sense. And sort of mirrors the separation and eventual unification of the Korean Peninsula. It was very interesting to see the contrast between North and South Korea.

Shooting Stars (2022) - Aside from the terrible, horrible, insulting Africa storyline (where the male lead goes to 'help' African kids with water scarcity, not even a country name is called, he just goes to *gestures vaguely* Africa to help goddammit he's such a beautiful soul! /s) There's a weird creepy sugar mommy wannabe side storyline and it's weird and out of nowhere. But the rest of it is good and campy and the main characters are so cute. All the couples are cute. The male lead is a cute disaster. Female lead is also a capable cutey but a disaster when it comes to romance. It's hilarious. I love all characters. It's fun. It's great. It shows a very interesting side of the entertainment industry.

While You Were Sleeping (2017) - A man and a woman who don't know each other have precognition powers and after they meet, they use them to take down a corrupt lawyer. The show isn't very heavy on the romance, tough the pair work pretty well together. I liked the main actress. Lee Jong Suk has chemistry with anyone. The male role was not exactly a good fit for Jong Suk. He's so much more naturally charming than the character. It's a fun show to pass the time. The found family is nice and all the characters work great together. The mom is great.

The King's Affection (2021) - I'm going to be honest, I didn't finish watching this. Ups. I got bored after episode 15. It's a very slow show but what I watched was quite good. It was just not a show for me. Having a bisexual male lead was awesome, I appreciate that he falls for the main character while he thinks she's a man. (Could be gayer tho, just saying.) Pretty good discussions and reversals of gender cliches. It has complicated parent-child relationships that are very well written which gives a lot of heart and heartbreak to this story. The political stuff gets very convoluted. I really wish the queer part was bigger though, and not limited to the main couple. We could even have poly representation! I still have half a mind to finish this but I don't know There are so many other shows I'd rather watch instead. (Boy, I really need to get into the actually queer side of k-dramas because the side I'm currently on is giving me crumbs.)

Lovers of the Red Sky (2021) - The premise was so cool. This has so much lore I like and the setting is beautiful and rich, but it also has so much lost potential. The plot is very weak in the second half and could be restructured. I loved the atmosphere, costumes and the actors and their characters: the blind cursed scholar nobleman, the female genius cheeky painter and her friend trio and the prince are all great characters. Ahn Hyo Seop is pretty good in it and looks very pretty indeed in historical costume (but the design of the villain creature he's possessed/cursed with is so, so bad omg). Great premise failed execution. Good first half but it went over the rails quickly. Still entertaining if you like historical fantasy.

Romance is a Bonus Book (2019) - It's a bit slow and could have done so much more with the female lead and her child. She's a bit underwhelming and her daughter is barely in the story. The second female character played by Jeong Eu-Gene was awesome, I love this actress now. Lee Jung Suk is always looking hot and being an excellent actor with what he's given; he's very charming here. He could have chemistry with a piece of wood and yet I wasn't that fan of the romance. Maybe it's just because friends to lovers isn't my cup of tea. There's a weird out-of-nowhere backstory between the male leads. The commentary of ageism in the workplace is a bit surface level (it's not that big of a deal for the company if you're overqualified for a job, the point should be that is an issue for you and your career, who is too good for the company). You can tell the writers really care about books; it's definitely a love letter to editors and an interesting window into the world of book publishing; you can feel the love editors put into making books. Bonus: the founding members of the publishing company have very funny moments.

Do no recommend:

King: Eternal Monarch - Couldn't even finish this. I was so, so confused. The dialogue, narrative and backstory make no sense! Everything is so unnecessarily confusing. There's no chemistry between the main couple. The king and the bodyguard had more chemistry. Lee Jung-Jin (playing the villain Lee Lim) & Woo Do-Hwan (the bodyguard) carried this show and are pretty much the only thing good about it. The female lead is sidelined. It had an intriguing premise but failed execution.

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim - Skimmed most of the second half. It's a mess. The love interest CEO is such a narcissist and asshole he wouldn't be able to keep a working, healthy relationship with his partner without some serious therapy first. The female lead seems to be repulsed by him most of the time even when together and even looks scared when they get intimate. There's an unnecessarily convoluted plotline about the main lead's brother and a kidnapping in their past. It has tonal issues and it's cringy rather than funny. The secondary characters are just a lot of useless filler. The female lead sacrifices her independence and dreams to be with the main guy. Just go watch Business Proposal instead.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo - The only pro of this show is IU. The romance went the undeveloped route. Cheap-looking production, with too many episodes, melodramatic, characters pivot in place instead of naturally developing; it's definitely a telenovela. The point that the female lead is from the future doesn't even matter for the story (should have made her a Goryeo historian instead of a random cosmetologist). Pass!

Tomorrow - Could not finish watching. Please, please don't watch it if you're dealing with depression, bullying or suicidal thoughts. Please don't. By episode 2 I was just screaming at the screen. Problematic? This show invented the word problematic. The supernatural task force that's supposed to save people with suicide risk is terrible at therapy and suicide prevention. They tell the person trying to commit suicide, literally on the edge of a building about to jump, that they should do it, that they're weak, they should just jump, go ahead! Like ... what????

Mystic Pop Up Bar - Didn't capture me by episode 2. Got bored. Some say this is better than Hotel Del Luna but I don't agree.

Abyss - It's a weird tonal mix. Would have preferred if it leaned further into the absurd (go all in with the humour or don't at all), the sci-fi or the murder mystery. Instead of just revealing by episode 3 who the murderer is, quickly changing the plot into a chase after the villain, even though he's so lame. But also he is keeps killing people and it gets dark. And then we cut to the main couple being silly and cute. It's so jarring. The leads have a great dynamic and Ahn Hyo Seop knows how to differentiate his characters really well, give them their own flavour., but in the end it's just a cool premise, failed execution. Very average.

Currently watching:

The Crowned Clown - Very interesting concept and gorgeous, gorgeous visuals. Plot drags a little. Has some tonal problems and oversimplification of politics. The best part is when Yeo Jin-Goo acts with himself haha. He's such a talented actor.

The Uncanny Counter - Get's a bit melodramatic sometimes but all four main actors are insanely good.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed - The main romantic relationship needs a lot more development, but the entire show is worth watching just for Dong Wook Lee and Kim Bum as brothers.

Alchemy of Souls - 6/10 so far. Currently watching season 2/part 2. Aside from the prince, I don't particularly care for any of the characters. Unpopular opinion but the main romantic pair have no chemistry. Mu-Deok has more chemistry with Yul and the prince, and the prince has more chemistry with Jang-Uk. The lore is confusing and inconsistent: it breaks its own rules. (Two souls in one body what?? when was this established as a thing?) There's not enough foreshadowing and setting up the rules of magic in this world (the Ice Stone comes up as a deux ex mahcina big plot point in the last second). It also drags; the episodes are too long. There's a lot of saying and ultimately the show doesn't deliver. The narrative structure is straight out of a fantasy Wattpad. The set and costumes are fun and cool for a fantasy world, and the first episode was great.

hear me out-

imagine how nice kissing yuuji is

like in the beginning, when you two just start dating, the kisses are so shy and clumsy. you guys would be at an arcade or something, just hanging out and having fun. you're playing together at one game and you don't realise how close you both are until you're already leaning in.

it's the first kiss, so it's fast and light- you're barely able to feel his lips as he pulls back with his face flushed and hot. it was experimental, you can tell by the way he's looking at you- asking for permission.

the way his honey-hued eyes move from your own to your lips, it's an unspoken question for more. yuuji's a consent king, so he won't lean in again, you need to make the move now.

when you do, it's deeper than the previous kiss. there's nothing sensual, no tongue, and there doesn't need to be. this kiss is full of young love, attempts at finding a flow that fits you both. yuuji's lips are soft against your own, moving slow and letting you take the lead. a rough hand finds it's way to the back of your neck, where he holds you just the slightest bit closer. it's not a strong grip, yuuji wasn't sure where to put his free hand- the other was placed on the joystick.

as you pull away, he moves his hand to your shoulder, where he starts rubbing slow circles. the two of you don't stray too far, keeping your foreheads pressed together.

it's sweet and soft and completely different from the kisses later on in the relationship.

the longer you're together, the bolder you both get. The kisses get longer, more intimate- yuuji gets more needy.

it's no surprise that as soon as yuuji gets more comfortable with affection and more aware of the boundaries you both set, he's a monster.

every time you're alone in class, training together, or even out on a mission- he's expecting smooches.

he'll look at you with sparkling, innocent eyes as he asks for a kiss. it's, honestly, very cute and you always give in.

until he gives you that look right after you both exercised a curse- and were drenched in it's slimey blood. that time you were cringing from the feeling, exhausted and ready to just get back to the dorms.

the ever-oblivious yuuji is making his way over to you, ready for a celebration kiss. it breaks your heart to watch him whine and beg for a kiss as you deny him, wanting to shower first.

he's bummed for the rest of the day, until you go to him later- after you both cleaned up- and give him a peck on the cheek.

it's all he needs to bounce back, yuuji's a little ball of sunshine again. he's hugging you tightly as he asks and begs for more kisses. each time you pull away he leans closer and gives you puppy dog eyes.

of course you give in, the image of his sad face when you rejected him earlier is still fresh and you want to make it up to him.

you both spend the night in his bed, hugging and binging some reality tv show you've been meaning to watch.

overall a 10/10 experience- would recommend it

Be Each Other’s Company - Charles Leclerc

Summary: A F1 creator is hired to improve the F1 social media along with doing some bits and pieces for Sky with the commentators and is now always around the paddock, having caught a certain Ferrari driver’s attention is nice. But she just doesn’t believe a word he says.

Charles Leclerc x midsize!reader, side pairing: matchmaker/wingman!Jenson Button x reader

This is for the midsize girlies, I’m not saying Charles wouldn’t date someone mid-plus size but...I don’t think it’ll happen if I’m being real, I’m midsize so come for me about this. He’s literally publicly shamed (jokingly) Carlos when they’ve been talking about how much food they eat.

PS. I love the fact that Carlos is a foodie, absolute king goes around the world, tries and loves all the food

Y/n being a young face in the paddock who has been a fan of F1 and having being chosen to be part of the media group who get to travel around. She’s living the dream.

She actually spends a lot of time with Jenson Button. Which is a childhood dream because no matter what age, that men is objectively gorgeous.

But he’s not the man who makes the effort to get her attention on every possible occasion.

“Y/n, you are dressed in Aston Martin? You are beautiful no matter what, but red looks much better.” Charles declares as he spots her making her turn from Alonso who looks amused by the interaction.

In the past couple weeks it’s become fairly common knowledge that Charles is fond of her and he intends to make it as well known as he can. To ward off anyone else who might think they have a chance with her.

“She is in the green team for today.” Alonso grins proudly while she smiles at him.

“Charles, I’m a little busy. Is there something you needed that’s important?” Y/n asks, as patient as ever with the Monegasque. She may be continuously rejecting him to save her own feelings, but she isn’t horrible to him.

“Can you come to the Ferrari garage afterwards?” Charles asks ignoring Alonso who is just eating this situation up as a spectator.

“I am here to work, Charles.”

“Please?”

“You should go. I am invested in this.” Alonso states earning a frown which makes him silence himself. “Ah sorry. I will be quiet now.”

“Could you go find where Lance is please?” Y/n asks making him nod and give the two some space to talk without him watching like it’s a tv drama. Waiting till he’s headed into he Aston Martin unit, she sighs turning back to Charles. “We’ve been over this, Charles.”

“But you have not even given me a chance.”

“I know I haven’t. But you know why I haven’t.” Y/n smiles sadly since this is maybe the fifth or sixth time.

“You do not like me.”

“You are so manipulative.” Y/n laughs while he grins at her, those dimples flashing at her like a hot blaze that burns through her veins all from his gaze. It’s not fair that his smile can have that affect on her. “Alright, fine. I’ll come find you.”

“Thank you, I will see you soon.” Charles smiles before moving away just in time for the Aston Martin drivers to appear giving her something else to focus on. Though Alonso doesn’t hide his curiosity about it.

Eventually they finish up the video they were doing with her and she moves to the Ferrari garage immediately being spotted by the one man who asked her to be there.

“We are going on a track walk, will you come?” Charles asks making her smile at him and laugh a little. “It will be fun. I promise.”

“Of course you think it will be fun.” Track walks are notoriously quite long and boring, but only a few drivers opt out of them and usually they’re not the favoured drivers by the F1 community. But a track walk is the perfect opportunity for Charles to charm y/n like he hopes to. “Come on then, no time to waste.”

The two walk out of the garages and up onto the track.

Canada is slightly chilly so walking around it’s not exactly a fun experience but Charles lets y/n talk to try and keep herself distracted from the temperature. Instead talking about her thoughts on the season and primarily Red Bull’s likelihood to win the entire season with Max’s lead.

“I think I am slowly winning you over.” Charles states making her puff out a breath slightly. “Do not lie, we are friends no?”

“It is not that simple.”

“I would not hold who your exes are against you.”

Is that a low blow? Or is that actually a good point?

“I have to go for some Sky stuff, but I’ll probably see you later.”

“I will give you a ride to the hotel, wait for me by the gates if I’m not already there.”

Y/n just bites back a smile and rushes to get to wherever Sky needed her to be 10 minutes ago.

“Y/n, where have you been?” Jenson asks since he’d actually spoken and heard from Alonso. “Are you blushing?”

“Shut up.”

They get on with the Sky stuff during which Lando, Yuki, Nyck, Toto and Charles all manage to crash at different points throughout them talking. They do have Daniel and Mick pop up but that’s purposely intended for them to talk about stuff with them.

“Could I steal her?” Charles asks appearing before the cameras have cut with his arms around her waist, giving only seconds of warning before Jenson grins and nods for Charles to take her before she’s scooped up from the ground.

“Charles-Jenson! You can’t just-oh for goodness sake. Charles, put me down.” Y/n groans while Charles laughs carrying her to the Ferrari unit while she catches sight of the cameras focused on them.

They won’t broadcast anything that she doesn’t want put out into the world, but no doubt they’re banking on the idea that she’ll end up with Charles as he wishes and she might just be worth keeping the footage of for the day they can confirm her as an F1 WAG.

Charles spent the whole weekend stealing y/n away whenever he could and he spent most of the time together giving her every reason to believe him when he said that he wanted something with her that was more than friendship or driver and media personnel.

“You should give him a chance, y/n. Charles clearly sees something in your that you don’t see in yourself.” Jenson states making her look up from her phone to the older man.

“He got to you, didn’t he?” She questions slightly amused by the lengths Charles is willing to go. Jenson is already fond of Charles and wishes him better luck in his career than Charles has had to endure so far. “You are so easily bought.”

“Charles is a nice man, a very nice man. Men like him are hard to come by even in the paddock. You’d be lucky to find someone who is so clearly obsessed with you even when you keep trying to tell him he’s got the wrong idea in his head. Has he changed or given up?”

He doesn’t have to ask that to know the answer for it. She knows that Charles has been unwavering with his mission to finally win her over into agreeing to a relationship.

“You should be hired as professional advocate for Charles, you promote him just as much as he promotes himself.” Y/n smiles before she sighs and tilts her head. “Together you’d be iconic.”

“Together, you and Charles could be the F1 IT couple.”

“That sounds awful.”

“I thought kids your age found that stuff appealing.”

“So glad you distinguish me only by age and nothing else.” Y/n hums dryly while Jenson tries to speak up about it. “I’m kidding, Jenson...anyway, you were selling Charles to me, keep going. What else do I have to look forward to?”

Jenson grins at the young woman and begins to list off all things that would appeal about Charles, and as usual, it’s not long before Charles is there with them interrupting the seemingly never ending list. Charles sits beside her and pulls her onto his lap without a second thought.

Y/n isn’t stupid, she knows that her previous point that her “size” is the main thing that is stopping her from really accepting his advances, so he’s continued to seem to make moves that are attempts to show that her weight is nothing that bothers him in the slightest.

“Do you need more?” Jenson asks earning a deadpanned expression. “I’ll leave the two of you to it.”

It was pretty obvious that Jenson was leaving her in hopes that his long list of pros vs the internal list of cons she’d already made.

“If you’re paying Jenson to sing praises for you, then you need to give him a raise.” Y/n states while he grins at her. “You should not look so proud.”

“You have yet to launch yourself off of me. I am very proud.” Charles shrugs then kissing her shoulder through her clothes as a casual gesture that probably means more than he wants to allow himself to admit out loud. “Has my efforts finally paid off?”

“Yes. I’m going to stop being a horrible person who rejects every time you act nicely towards me.” Y/n nods earning a beaming grin that shines bright enough she leans away almost losing her balance on his lap leaving Charles to pull her closer again. “So...what do you want to do first?”

“First, we need you to wear something Ferrari so everyone knows where your devotion truly lies.” Charles declares making the young woman snort, not because she’s refusing to cater to his demand but because she knows that he’s not joking in the slightest.

“I’m not supposed to show a preference of the teams.”

“I don’t care. Everyone is a Ferrari fan.”

“Well that’s what the legends say.”

“Seb would be flattered to know my own girlfriend called him a legend.” Charles laughs while she rolls her eyes only for Charles to pull her closer. “Have you got anything else you need to do for today?”

“No. Not that I’m aware of.”

“Perfect. Then you are all mine.”

So.*loud long surp*. in Anarchists there is a LUZ. she ended up on the Islands after falling into a lake, which turned out to be a portal to the world of demons. the King and Jester quickly picked up her there. she seemed fun to them. Philip mistook her for a kitten, and she, in fact, now walks under this nickname. she lives in their castle above titan’s head. and when she wants to get out of there, she asks Collie (specifically Collie because if Phil lets her down, firstly, it will be unsafe, and secondly, Luz cannot be picked up, she has daddy issues). sometimes they forget to feed her, but she copes with it herself. fortunately, anarchists have a fridge and, in principle, all the best things from the human realm. they even have a TV on which they watch anime. once they organized a “One Piece Month”))) then they flew around the islands, found more or less suitable candidates for the roles of characters, turned them into these characters and forced them to act out the roles (precisely they forced them, because making them obedient puppets was boring, not Interesting, Phil said)

Luz watched these idiots having fun for a while and was like, “Well, I see that they have no intention of harming people. They’re just idiots who don’t understand what they’re doing.” at least she hopes so. at some point Luz thought, “I can fix them.” and she had a moralizing conversation with the boys, trying to somehow reach out to them. but, as you understand, moralizing conversations affect people only when they are rubbed into them by someone with authority and force. and Luz has neither one nor the other, she's just a kitten.

Luz realized that she didn’t belong here, that her attempts to affect on K ‘n J were pointless, and decided to go her own way. She said goodbye to the boys. they got upset and after she left they started fighting because of what had happened, saying, “It’s your fault that Kitten left us!”. word for word, Philip went to let off steam, and Collie stayed at home. aaaaaand then the plot of the comic that we’re working on now happened. We're already half done! heading towards the 30 page mark......

The second picture is what the pocket found just after getting out of the lakes. K ‘n J were racing through the forest on “beepbeepkas” (they maneuvered right through the air between the trees), but belatedly they stopped to check out what kind of person that was, standing there sticking it in, not understanding anything. Collie's first line was "you look interesting" and then Phillip were like "we're taking her with us"

Third picture: we will have Hollow Mind. Not saying any more context yet because there are spoilers :))

Fourth: Phill can do gypsy tricks, which are valued among them precisely because without magic they rely on sleight of hand and cunning. Luz was not impressed

I started watching Kdramas this year and I do a lot of literature analysis in my normal life, so I found it really fun to find the tropes that were unique to this genre/culture that were different than what I find in Hollywood TV/movies and novels. I started with Alchemy of Souls and I was kind of amused looking back, because I never thought the SML had a chance with the FL but if I had known how strong the "they met as children and therefore DESTINY" trope is, I probably would have thought they would get together for sure!

Here are some of the unique tropes I've noticed:

-Leads meet as children and therefore DESTINY (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, 100 Days My Prince, It's Okay to Not be Okay, Castaway Diva, The King's Affection, Sh**ting Stars, Destined with You, subverted in Alchemy of Souls)

-Reincarnation, which happens a ton but of course for the same reason Western media is littered with Chosen One/Saviour plots (played with in Alchemy of Souls and Extraordinary You, straight in Destined with You, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Moon in the Day, My Demon, The Story of Park's Marriage Contract... so many)

-Guy (usually) buys the girl shoes and then puts them on her. They also usually make a joke about her running away. (Tale of the Nine Tailed, 100 Days My Prince, Extraordinary You, Castaway Diva, King the Land, subverted in The King's Affection and The Forbidden Marriage)

-Guy (usually) gives/brings the girl an umbrella to protect her from the rain. I LOVE THIS TROPE, symbolism for protection and shelter gets me (straight in My Lovely Liar, King the Land, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, subverted/played with in Alchemy of Souls, Business Proposal, Doom at Your Service, Castaway Diva)

-Not sure if this would count as a trope, but unique to the genre because we don't have formal speech in English and especially not in Canada where I live (we've basically started just going first name with everyone) I love it so much when the main characters use informal terms with each other for the first time. The subtitles don't always translate this well, but I know what the honorifics sound like and I'm all, "She didn't use "Mr." that time it's serious now!!!"

Anyway, are there more? I'm probably not catching them all!

Edit: Definitely some sort of trope around characters finding wild ginseng to solve a problem.

(I've only been watching Korean dramas by the way, I'm sure some of these tropes are shared by other dramas from China and Thailand. I just found the comparison with English language TV interesting.)

Eddie lavishes like a king in the corner of the new couch. This is the life, he thinks, the sentiment strengthened by your foot warming under his thigh and Roan's entire body stretched out in his lap.

A bowl of jiffy pop popcorn with extra butter and milk duds cools to his left, your body screwed up in a shape to his right. Still, he hugs her nice and tight in case she needs it. She's been known to cry at movies: she cries every time the Part of Your World song plays in The Little Mermaid.

Eddie's cried a couple of times with her.

He's a little surprised when she tears up, though. Looking down at her with pursed lips, Eddie rubs the length of her arm, silky pyjamas cold under his palm. "It's okay," he whispers, pulling her to his chest. "Don't be sad, Ro, it's just a movie."

Roan shakes her head, her shoulders shaking as she crawls out of his lap and into yours. You let your knee drop to accept her. Eddie's slightly offended until the TV screen goes white and the tears running down your cheeks shine in clarity.

"Baby," he says with a snort.

You laugh yourself as Roan sniffles in your lap. "Hey, what's the matter?" you ask her.

"You're crying," Roan says.

"You're crying." You sniffle and wipe her cheeks with your thumbs. "We're silly, huh?"

Roan isn't perturbed by the movie, it's your crying that's affecting her. She does as you'd done, wiping your cheeks dry with her hands before enclosing your shoulders in short arms. "Don't cry, mom. It gets better at the end of the movie. They find the starstone."

You sniff and laugh, your foot shifting from under Eddie as you fold yourself around Roan, almost protectively. "Are you crying 'cos I'm crying? Princess, they're just movie tears. I'm a softie."

"She's a huge softie," Eddie says, lost for what to do besides sit there and watch.

"Are you okay?" Roan asks.

"Baby, I'm fine. It's only a sad movie. I'm okay, I promise." You smile widely. "See?"

Eddie decides nobody is in any real emotional distress, grabbing the popcorn bowl. "You know," —his words stagger as he gets distracted digging for milk duds— "we should start watching other stuff if you guys are gonna fall apart. You're gonna have headaches and I'm gonna have to take care of you both. We could watch one of my tapes–"

"No, dad," Roan says firmly. "No way."

"Which tape? I love you, Eddie, I really love you, but I can't watch your bootleg of Live in Irvine again this week. I'm all Metallica'd out."

"Hey." He holds his hands up. "Whatever."

You and Roan share a guilty laugh. "Maybe I could watch it one more time," Roan says.

"You just feel bad for hurting my feelings."

Roan shakes her head, dark hair bouncing around her cheeks. "That's not true, daddy."

He puts the bowl of popcorn on Roan's play table and leans back, arms over the backs of the sofa with forearms hanging down, cool. He raises his eyebrows at his pouting daughter.
