“C’mon, Cap, there’s gotta be someone else. Send anyone else,” Buck pleaded, adding in a hasty, “Please,” as an afterthought.

“I can’t, Buck. It’s your turn this month.”

“But…I wanna be out there with you, being useful, not stuck giving a lecture to some bored out of their minds teenagers.”

“Then don’t make it boring,” Bobby said with a reassuring smile, giving Buck’s shoulder a firm squeeze as he walked towards the stairs.

Buck groaned and sulked the whole way to the locker room. Tomorrow was going to suck. Teenagers were the worst! At least little kids were interested, their eyes glowing and growing round with each piece of gear he pulled out. They asked questions and made it fun. Teenagers just sat there and stared miserably off into the distance…or slept, or doodled, or found some other way to not pay attention and prove to him that he was wasting his time.

Career Day was the fucking worst!

Eddie strode through the school’s front gate with an extra pep in his step. Career Day. Best fucking day of the semester!

All he had to do was make sure the projector and PowerPoint were set up properly, and then he could sit back and let some other poor sop entertain–or more likely bore–the students with information about their career.

Of course, he had to occasionally check to make sure none of the students misbehaved, but in his experience, they didn’t. They saved that for the days where they were actually required to do something. An easy day like today wasn’t worth a detention, so for the most part his time would be his own.

He could finally clear his inbox, maybe respond to a few parent emails (his least favorite thing), and then grade the mountain of papers waiting for him on his desk. He’d actually put off some of it, knowing he’d have extra time today. As a single father, any time he could grade before ten at night was a gift.

He picked up the schedule in the office and trailed his finger down the list to find his name.

A firefighter? He had a firefighter this year? The students might actually stay awake for this one! Last year’s accountant had set a napping record, and Eddie had almost had to add himself to the count.

we've talked about jealous eddie, and pining eddie, and afraid-he's-actually-a-homophobe eddie, but i think there's another element we need to explore and that's supportive eddie. because here's eddie diaz having just found out that the reason his best friend has been so weird lately is that he's going through this major revelation and it's all new and he's so excited and a little nervous, and buck needs his best friend to have his back as he explores these new feelings.

and eddie genuinely likes tommy, he was the one who wanted them to get on well! so even if it makes his chest tighten to see them brushing shoulders and holding hands and kissing he absolutely does not have time to unpack that feeling especially if it could in any way derail this thing buck is going through.

and eddie knows buck like no one else, he knows how buck's struggled with feeling rejected and like he's never anyone's first choice. but here's tommy, and he's cool and nice and adventurous and loyal and buck gets all giggly at the prospect of being with him, and that's exactly the kind of relationship that buck deserves to have, one that makes him feel seen and chosen, and this isn't like with his past girlfriends where eddie could be snide and tease and try to help him see how wrong of a fit they are for him, that kind of behavior could really hurt buck here, so eddie is determined that he is not going to ruin this for buck, no matter what, because this isn't about eddie and the weird flutter he gets when he thinks of another man with buck and what it must be like to get to hold him and kiss him.
