TVD Rambling Rewatch 1x13

Bonnie kisses Bartender Ben and immediately knows he’s a vampire. Creeped out but playing it extremely cool, she gets him to sit down and tries to escape the Grille behind his back. Too bad he wasn’t playing on letting her out of his sight. She is kidnapped in full view of the bar and no one reacts.

Elena realizes what a weird life she’s living as her vampire boyfriend successfully digs up and opens his father’s grave to retrieve a magical spell book from the Civil War days. Stefan opens it up only for Damon to show up, upset, but clearly not very surprised that Stefan has acted behind his back. 

Stefan shows no regret, saying that he can’t let Damon bring Katherine back. Tell me Stefan, will you ever admit it’s because of your unresolved feelings or are you still on the whole “it’s too dangerous thing”? 

Anyhoo, Damon’s voice breaks as he apologizes for thinking for a second that he could trust his brother. Stefan shoots back that Damon is incapable of trust. Damon looks stricken as Stefan says that the fact that he was there meant that he read the journal and he was planning on getting the grimoire himself. Damon doesn’t hesitate to say that of course he was because the only person he can count on his himself, that Stefan made sure of that. 

Then, Damon redirects his focus away from Stefan and to Elena, whose image comes into to focus for the first time. He says that he trusted her and she fooled him. Elena looks guilty and can’t hold his gaze. 

The standoff continues. Damon says, “so what are you gonna do now? Because if you try to destroy that, I’ll rip her heart out.”

Stefan: You won’t kill her.

Damon raises his eyebrows but Stefan remains confident. So Damon vamps past Stefan to grab Elena from behind. He says that he can do one better, bites his wrist, and feeds Elena his blood. 

This is a man at the end of his rope. He has lost Katherine when his brother sold her out and she was captured, lost her when he died, lost her in the fire. Then he was turned into a vampire and he had hope that he could see her again. He protected generations of Bennett witches and waited 145 years for a comet to arrive. He recovered the talisman, but lost that to a Bennett witch who was barely aware of her nature and didn’t care about it. He lost it for good when Emily possessed her descendent to break her promise and destroy his hope. He found another way when there wasn’t supposed to be one. Despite Stefan hiding information, he found the journal, he found the location of the grimoire, only to see his brother trying to destroy it. Damon has done more than anyone thought possible, carried the burden alone, suffered the condescension and mockery all for the slim hope of saving Katherine and reuniting with his love. If his threat to kill Elena won’t work, he’ll threaten to turn her. Stefan finally recognizes this desperation and he is moved to act. 

***Point to note, Stefan was not moved to act on the threat of Elena’s life, but he was when Damon threatened to turn her. This could mean two things: either that he understood Damon well enough to know he wouldn’t kill her and was confident enough with that knowledge to call his bluff [which seems unlikely considering how poorly he understands Damon in any other situation] or turning Elena is worse for Stefan than her death. Now, we know that Damon probably didn’t want to kill her but he is also the King of Snap Decisions so that was a pretty risky move for Stefan. Make of that what you will. 

Damon: Give me the grimoire or I’m snapping her neck and you and I will have a vampire girlfriend.

Stefan: Let her go first. 

Damon: The book.

Stefan: I’m not going to give this to you, until she is standing next to me.

Damon, sounding increasingly desperate: The problem is that I no longer trust that you’ll give it back!

Stefan: You just did the one thing that ensured I would. [At Damon’s nod, Stefan sets down the spell book.]

Damon: [gently nuzzles Elena’s head before slowly releasing her]

Elena rushes to Stefan’s side and they both quickly exit stage left. Damon is left alone, lit by the torchfire by his father’s grave. It wasn’t how he wanted this to go, but he got what he needed and he’d do it again if he had to. He picks up the grimoire, and remembers how as a human he saw Katherine carried away in chains. His father pushes him up against the wall, says that he’ll be killed if he’s a sympathizer. With zero hesitation, Damon spits back, “then let me be killed!”

Another SEx ask: Why do you think Stelena would continue to have sex even if they’re interrupted? I only ask because Damon did interrupt them in 1x13 and they immediately stopped, but I also remember that they’re loud AF and don’t close their doors, like, ever.

Was it because Damon was more of an antagonist at that point in time (not that he ever stopped being one, but like what he was supposed to be in Season 1), or is it about specific people interrupting them?

OK so 1. That isn't what happened. He interrupts them cuddling

2. TVD is not GG, they weren't going to show a "caught and kept going" situation anyway but

3. what they did show was that literally the second Damon leaves, Stefan and Elena start to have sex despite the fact that they knew he could probably hear

which is just something they do, he's at home and he's just going to have to deal with it

and Damon just having to deal with it is something that comes up a lot

and yes, I've mentioned the doors quite a bit

and I talk about how loud they are when Jenna hears them quite a bit

and then there are the things the show is willing to play with like Elena's parents' bedroom

so yeah, if we're going to be NSFW about it, I don't think it would be a stretch to have a 'caught and kept going' situation with Damon or a stranger

or like Bonnie and Caroline could walk in and hurry out giggling and that's not going to kill their vibe especially since they get so wrapped up with each other

and as I've discussed they're objects of attention

soooo I just don't think it's a stretch.

I was reading the first TVD book recently and noticed Elena told Stefan that Damon attempted to kiss her at the school, and I don't get why she didn't tell Stefan about Damon trying to kiss her in 1x03. I understood why she didn't in season 2 but she hated him at the start of season 1.

There's a lot that Damon and Elena don't tell Stefan, and you've just reminded me of a post I forgot to finish lol. Elena is back and forth with Damon because she's new to vampirism as she's new to them. Even though she's pissed with Damon in 1x3, she accepts his apology in 1x4... as momentary as it is because she ends up seeing Caroline's bite marks. Damon and Elena don't tell Stefan everything because their relationship was initially built to be that way. It was meant to be separate. That's why it's important to see Damon as both gloating and caring in 1x11. Both angry and hurt in 1x13 and 1x14. They're two separate relationships. Damon is gloating with Stefan and caring with Elena. He's angry at Stefan and hurt by Elena. You'll see this in some of their responses to each other. Like their conversation in 1x22.

Elena: Look, I know Stefan is worried about our friendship. Damon: Did he mention something to you too? Elena: No, did he mention something to you? Damon: No, nothing worth repeating.

They're keeping their relationship with Stefan out of their own relationship. They wanted it that way. That's why they don't tell Stefan everything.

I read your post about Damon and I would like to add that he didn't meet Katherine after he quit the war, they started seeing each other before that, which is why Katherine commented on him leaving her alone to go back to war in a 2x22 flashback since he was on holiday when he met her and they started dating. 1x13's flashback also shows Damon coming home after quitting the war and seeing Katherine again, showing that he knew her before.

Thanks for the correction! I watched TVD a long time ago so I don't remember perfectly.

1. who is your favorite character in 2?

Landon Kirby! (Obviously, since I’ve got a whole side blog dedicated to him haha.) He’s one of my top favorite characters ever (okay, not just one of, he is probably my very favorite).

2. who is your least favorite character in 1?

Oh idk... least favorite of the mains throughout the show would probably be Damon. I don’t hate him (well... sometimes I do haha, but I like him at times as well) I just like him least compared to everyone else. Though if I’m choosing someone who’s not one of the mains, I couldn’t stand the heretics in season 7, along with Julian. Yeah... maybe I’ll say Julian is my least favorite.

3. what is your favorite episode of 4?

That’s hard, but I’m gonna say either 1x08 or 2x09 but don’t think I can choose between the two.

4. what is your favorite season of 5?

Hmm I really love every season, but overall, I think I will say season 1 is my favorite.

5. who is your favorite couple in 3?

It’s a tie between Klamille and Haylijah. I think if I had to choose I would maybe say Klamille? But they’re very close.

6. who is your favorite couple in 2?

Handon of course! No question. (Also the only couple in that show that I care about.)

7. what is your favorite season of 1?

Season 2 (but season 1 is a close second), there was just a ton of great content in that season. It’s my favorite season for Stelena, I also loved all the Forwood stuff, I liked Beremy as well. We got vampire Caroline, the start of Steroline’s friendship. We got Katherine as the villain along with Elijah and Klaus. And I loved the dynamics between the characters and the storylines. Plus the early seasons of TVD are just the best as well imo.

8. what is your favorite episode of 5?

Idk if I have a favorite, but I really like 2x05 with all the John and Judy stuff, that always gets me. And 3x06, the ending was a lot but it was good. But I also really love 3x08 and how the whole thing ends. So yeah, those 3 are some of my tops but I don’t think I can choose just one.

9. what is your favorite episode of 2?

There’s a lot of episodes I like for certain scenes but my favorite episode as a whole is 1x13. Just the writing, editing, acting, music, it was all so well done and also the most emotional episode of the show imo. And I love how it was all solely focused on the characters, like on a mental and emotional level. Plus of course the Landon phoenix reveal at the end. (I’ll also add that 1x01, 1x08, and 2x12 are some of my top favorites as well.)

10. how long have you watched 1?

I watched the pilot when it aired back in 2009 and just never stopped watching. And will still rewatch it even though it ended years ago.

11. how did you become interested in 3?

Since it was a TVD spinoff and the backdoor pilot was a TVD episode, I naturally started watching it once it began and obviously to see the Mikaelsons’ story continue.

12. who is your favorite actor in 4?

Probably Millie Bobby Brown, but also Noah Schnapp, he was amazing in season 2 and deserves more credit for that.

13. which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?

1, TVD is my very favorite show.

14. which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?

1, since TVD has more episodes than TO.

15. if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

I mean, I really wouldn’t wanna be any of them because they’re always going through terrible stuff. Having Eleven’s powers would be awesome, but I wouldn’t ever wanna be her with all she’s gone through and keeps going through. Idk maybe... Erica? Just because she gets to be part of the group but she’s also not been as in the thick of things the way the other characters have... yet anyway.

16. would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?

I don’t see how that would work or make any sense at all, especially when they take place like 30 years apart. Unless Eleven ended up being a witch or something? That’s the only kind of connection I can think of them having haha.

17. pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple

Idk, most everyone was kind of with everyone at some point. 😂 Maybe... Stefan and Bonnie? 🤷‍♀️🤔 I always wish we had gotten to see more of a friendship between them but I don’t think them as a couple would’ve been horrible either (Bonnie did think Stefan was hot in the pilot 😂) though I’ve honestly never thought of that before.

18. overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?

Definitely Lost in Space. Legacies started out good, but uh... yeah, anyways... 😬

19. which has the better theme music, 2 or 4?

Stranger Things for sure, that theme music is pretty iconic. (Legacies doesn’t have much of a theme anyway, plus I’m not a fan of some of the score either so...)

20. what is your favorite episode of 3?

Again, I can’t choose just one, but a few favorites that come to mind are 2x09, 2x22, 3x09 (except the ending), 3x22, 5x12... too many to choose from.

TVD Rambling Rewatch 1x13

We start this episode off strong with a flashback to Mystic Falls in 1864. Katherine shows off her acting chops as a damsel in distress in order to lure two men into a false sense of security before draining them both. Oh the joys of vampire life before easily accessible blood bags. Not that I think KP is necessarily a staunch supporter of the “moral” blood sucking present day vamps seem to laud. 

I have to wonder why this old man was traveling at night if he was the one to mention that it’s not safe at night. Returning home from a secret rendezvous with his mistress perhaps? Intrigue indeed. 

Anyway, KP kills random dude and poor hapless coachman and turns with a bloody smile at the body lying in the middle of the road. “And that’s how it’s done,” she says, smugly. 

And for the first time we see that the body in the road isn’t a random corpse, but it’s Damon! He gets up shakily. I love Ian’s acting here, showing off discomfort at the deaths, desperate rationalization of Katherine’s lifestyle, and a struggle for calm. He loves her and in Damon’s mind, love means accepting every part of a person, from the adorable way her nose crinkles when she laughs to the reality that she murders innocent people for food. 

Damon: What happens to the bodies?

Katherine: We’ll drag them off into the woods and let the other animals finish them off. 

[Can we just take a moment to appreciate Katherine calling them “the other animals” as if she sees herself as an animal as well?]

Seeing Damon’s hesitance, KP asks if Damon is sure that he’s ready. He tries to convincingly say that he is, but you can see a little doubt. Katherine presses him, drawing him deeper into her world. She entreats Damon to kiss her, even with two men’s blood on her lips. Damon, who at this point is not entirely innocent in a technical sense, still retains some form of his sweet summer childhood, removes his handkerchief to wipe her face. KP brushes his hand anyway, tells him to kiss her anyway. And you see it, the moment when Damon decides to commit, to damn himself in the process of falling for the charming, destructive Katherine Pierce. 

Damon firms up his resolves, tightens his fingers in Katherine’s curls, and loses himself in a passionate, bloody embrace.
