let's talk about shane from stardew valley
people who shit talk about shane because of how his spouse room looks (showing signs that he may have relapsed, that's despite being in recovery he's still actively struggling with addiction, ect.) are just as bad as men who date a woman that they know is mentally ill, and then throw a fit or break up with her when she shows signs of mental illness.
it's the exact same thing, to a tee. people are complaining/divorcing him literally because his spouse room shows that he's still struggling with a mental illness/staying sober despite being in therapy and going to meetings.
and guess what, that's exactly how addiction works. you don't stop and it just goes away. you relapse over and over, while doing your very best. relapse/"slipping" is a vital part of recovery, just like therapy and attending your meetings (if you have them for your particular addiction).
addict's will live with the aftermath of, and be in recovery with, their addictions until the day that they die. no matter how long they are sober, there is always a small chance for a relapse or a slip in your judgement. i speak from experience in this, both as someone who has family members who were/are addicts and as someone who has addictions (that are tied to other mental health issues, not substance based).
shane is doing his best to recover, for the people he loves, and doesn't deserve to be treated badly because of something that's a natural part of the recovery process- that he's trying so hard to not let happen.
also, shane is definitely an asshole for a while after you meet him- i completely understand that, and im not arguing with that. you have every right to not like a character, or not want to be married to a character, but not liking them of not wanting to marry them simply because they're mentally ill/you can visually see the way their mental illness manifests is not okay.
also, what is his deal with randomly putting up joja wallpaper in the house? what's the reason? what was he thinking when he did that?

Bpd culture is having people not seem to understand just how early your symptoms started. Like this disorder didn’t just appear one day, it was slowly built up from all the shit i went through as a kid. And because it developed when I was a kid obviously I was exhibiting symptoms as a kid. I never got a happy and innocent childhood. While my classmates were watching cartoons and eating cookies I was trying to hang myself with jump ropes and developing a masterbation addiction. -🧷

some of the less pretty parts of plurality
we talk a lot on this blog about the funny or nice parts of being plural, but there's also a lot of bad shit that can come with it. it's not all good, just like it's not all bad. it just is! sometimes, seeing posts like this makes us feel a little better, knowing we aren't alone in these struggles and seeing other people who have come through it, so, here's this
this is going to require a lot of me being vulnerable on the internet lmao
everything is going under a cut, and i'm marking applicable TW and CWs here as well as in the tags. i tried to keep it as light as possible (if there's any tags i missed, PLEASE do let me know and i'll add them ASAP /gen)
(this is also quite a long post, under the cut the word count is: 437)
WARNINGS: addiction mentions, physical illness, exotrauma mentions
-) developing an addiction/dependency that everyone has to manage, due to one headmate's actions
-) trying to collectively recover from addiction when not everyone wants to, and some headmates actively working against the progress and goals
-) more specifically, having to maintain a clean streak for everyone, not just one individual. not just yourself. we have an agreement- we stick together with this stuff
-) headmates who actively dislike people we know, and generally collectively like, and having to manage and ignore secondhand emotions towards those people when the headmates in question are around (not to say, ignoring how those headmates feel about people, but moreso not letting the emotions bleed through into our own interactions)
-) panicking because your job directly relates to helping other headmates, and despite your best efforts, things keep getting worse (not directly applicable to me who is writing this -host)
-) having to agree with headmates, who have done nothing wrong, that they can't be around front, because they're symptom holders, and the body is ill enough all the time that we physically can't handle them fronting
-) fighting. constant fighting. i can't think of a day since our syscovery that there hasn't been some sort of fight, argument, breakdown, violence, some sort of incident internally
-) so many headmates with so much exotrauma. some of their triggers have bled into our collective triggers, and holy shit is it hard to explain thost to people who don't understand exomemories, or even who don't know about the system
-) having to watch littles who are far too young for any of this experience this whole ordeal
-) "Atlantis" by Seafret. it's about an extremely different topic, but the lyrics hit home. "i can't save us, my atlantis, we fall. we built this town on shaky ground." because holy fuck, it feels that way sometimes
several of these things are now managed, several are not. being human is a weird, messy, fucked up experience, and when you shove a bunch of consciousnesses into one human body, it gets even more convoluted
whoever you are, whatever reason you might have for reading this: i love you. you are not alone in your struggles. you have support from so many places, and you will get through whatever you're currently experiencing, be it so simple as your favourite pencil breaking, all the way to personal tragedy. you are loved
-the host (he/they), expressing thoughts of the collective
(scheduling this to post outside of the queue because our content is usually much more lighthearted than this and i don't want to take up a spot for that)

Modern technology/works/understanding/etc. I'd like to give "Endeavour" characters...
Morse: noise-cancelling headphones, an mp3 player with a huge amount of opera on it, non-alcoholic real ales (St Peter's Without, the alcohol-free Doom Bar, etc.), a subscription to medici.tv, awareness of Joyce DiDonato's voice. Shadi Bartsch's translation of The Aeneid. Awareness of ADHD and autism as Relevant To Him and some suitable online community. Also some therapy but that goes without saying...
Fred Thursday: Fred. <3 awareness of PTSD and C-PTSD as A Thing and both being relevant in his case (from the war & work and his childhood respectively) even more therapy than Morse needs. All those youtube channels with 24/7 livestreams of various wildlife. The complete works of Terry Pratchett. I'm almost tempted to say fandom spaces because the gentler of them might actually appeal to him a lot.
Max Debryn: more recent medical knowledge. Modern queer community including the more awesome online bits. The work of recently rediscovered composers such as Barbara Strozzi and Joseph Bologne. Possibly Carol Ann Duffy's poetry. Elly Griffiths' "Ruth Galloway" novels if he fancies a busman's holiday read. ;-) Other than that I think he has more to teach us than the other way around. :-)
Peter Jakes: see Fred re: PTSD and C-PTSD awareness and a huge amount of therapy. I'm tempted to add at least the option of more recent help with giving up smoking given a lot more is understood these days. A Netflix subscription and an excellent gaming system. Instant messenger things so he can keep in touch with Oxford friends while in the US.
Joan Thursday: an environment in which it's more usual for women to not give up their jobs on marriage (or not get married at all). A lot of more recent folk rock, singer-songwriter, pop, and indie music might hit the spot for her to add to what she already loves. Yet more therapy. An awesome community of intersectional feminists. The complete works of bell hooks.
Win Thursday: oh Win. Therapy, the Open University. Really good couples therapy with Fred because they clearly love each other so much but *boy* do they fuck up towards each other (mostly him, but not only him). Instant messenger for better keeping in touch with everyone. An air fryer.
Sam Thursday: more therapy, and addiction help. Anger management help. Oh bless him. <3
Reginald Bright: grief counselling, instant messenger, Abir Mukherjee's detective novels, online ordering of Indian groceries, places online to put his art and get it fully admired, and then instant messenger once he moves back to India.
Jim Strange: honestly? he's the only one who seems to weirdly thrive in the time he lives. But I *would* like to throw intersectional feminist, LGBT+ and anti-racism literature at him to help avoid his less admirable moments. And actually some online community (fandom even?) so he has more people to bond with that aren't at the Lodge or at work...

Being a recovering addict is weird because one day you're absolutely fine, nothing to worry about, nothing to see here, but then the next day you're in the gutter and holding on by a thin thread. There is no in between.
jk there is an in between and that's where i exist most of the time.

I found this reaction to 5sos5 and it provided a new perspective on what the album could be about: https://youtu.be/OELCdhmi2io?si=3kLmP0fP2S3-VSWB
Wait wait wait I'm sorry but having shit like caramel be about the color of some hard licors and the comedown of getting sober is kinda mind-blowing. You add that to tracks like ydgtp and red line and tears and bloodhound even bleach and efyts and have that be about you fighting yourself and themes like addiction and alcoholism actually adds a whole new layer of interpretations about the songs. I think you can actually contextualize most of the song on the album around this and OH MY GOD. I'm legit staring at the wall trying to formulate something more coherent but he legit broke me. The whole motif of running around in circles trying to chase something you cant find anymore applied to trying to find the person you felt like you were when drinking or getting high was fun and made you feel good but now every time you crash, you crash harder so you try to stay away but you keep relapsing is actually fascinating. And it works? "When I lived between the bars" "it's hard to fake when I'm not faded" "I guess that's why I'm always high" "all my friends are up in mars... another lonely night" the entirety of bloodhound??? Like legit I'm sitting here 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 thank you so much for sending this, will be thinking about it forever.

Okay I was gonna post this anyways but the server I'm in talked about it a little so I'm gonna post what I wrote over there on here and elaborate a bit.
I saw a theory/kind of joke thing a few days ago about how Herbert West may have died at the end of the first Re-animator movie but was brought back to life. In a scene in the extended cut of the movie, we see Herbert injecting the reagent into himself (it's diluted and it's 5cc's (that is, not a lot) but still, it's reagent) to keep himself awake and on top of shit. The theory revolves around the fact that Herbert's "habit" revived him after his death to Hill's intestines at the end of the movie. Here's exactly what I sent to the Discord server:
"Like. Listen. If it's true that Herbert did technically die at the end of the first movie but his constantly injecting himself with reagent brought him back, I think it would be kind of fascinating because 1. It means that not only is Herbert correct and successful in his experiments, 2. It means that there is a way of doing it so that the reanimated subject *doesn't even realize they're dead to begin with*
Herbert mentioned in the novel that he was intending on giving this serum out after perfecting it (specifically to "brilliant minds" like doctors and stuff), I think it'd be kind of interesting to see him realize that they'd technically have to get addicted to reagent the way he was to even have a chance of their immortality being possible because I think it was a multitude of factors that saved him and kept him, like, more "human" so to speak than their many, many cadavers (specifically that he was likely reanimated the *second* he died due to all the reagent already in his system and that Herbert's death was probably relatively fast (he was getting dragged by his throat by intestines, I hope for his sake that it *was* fast))."
And now I'm gonna elaborate.
I think it's both amazing and hilarious that, if the theory is correct, Herbert got it fully right completely by accident and doesn't even know it.
Like he spends all three of those movies trying to figure out how to re-animate someone so perfectly that they retain their humanity and conscious thought without knowing that he himself is the one and only success story that came about from his experimentation. That is irony in its purist form and I love it.
And now for the "factors" I mentioned. I touched on it a bit in the original message I sent but the success of his re-animation I think rested in a few things.
1. Herbert's death was (probably?) fast. He was in the thick of that chemical shit with slimy intestines all around his mouth and nose, to reiterate what I mentioned in the message I hope it was fast. Part of the reason (I think) Herbert's other experiments failed was because most of the re-animated subjects he used didn't die fast, and in the case of the cop in Bride, he was revived like three minutes after Herbert killed him, which brings me to
2. The fact that Herbert was revived likely the moment he died. This is what most of the theory rests on. Every other instant we see Herbert giving some poor corpse the reagent, it takes him a few seconds to get it out of the bottle and into the subject (which is what we learn from Herbert in the first movie: "Every moment we waste... costs us results."). Herbert was successful in being re-animated because he already had the reagent in his system. We don't know for sure how long Herbert's been giving himself these doses but given his utter desperation in the scene (and his seeming knowledge of how much he needs and what goes into the solution) I'm gonna guess he's been taking it for a while. He likely had a shit ton of reagent in his system, so it's fully plausible to assume that he was re-animated mere moments after his initial death. He didn't need the electricity or whatever the hell he comes up with in Beyond to keep himself human because his brain and body didn't have the time to register it was dead.
So yeah, that's my rant on Herbert West, successful re-animation.

bpd culture is he’s horrible, he’s absolutely horrible, I was completely miserable when I was with him, he abused me and made my mental health so much worse, he appraised and encouraged my addictions, he befriended my SAer, but he was my FP, and I miss him anyway even though I hate him

Some more CL Ashlen / Ashie + Ramon headcanons and lore tidbits cause why not.
- Ashie is determined to help Ramon recover through any means possible. She will act as a shoulder for him to cry on, listen to what he needs to get out, and hold him close to comfort him. This also includes getting him into rehab for his addictions, its a work in progress.
- Ramon often tries to repay her kindness and hospitality, even if it's not much as he believes so. He looks after her and try to make things up for "abandoning" her and pretty much roped her into this mess, getting her labeled as a terrorist as a result.
- Ramon's hair isn't always gonna stay slicked back as he wants it to be. Multiple times, it's gonna spring right back up and it frustrates him. He thinks about getting a haircut one day but for now, he often asks Ashie for a hair tie or wear a hat.
- Ashie owes alot to Bullfrog once they get to know eachother and what happened between him and Ramon. She wanted to tell the truth to him for so long but felt powerless and him feeling so far out of reach. She felt like she could've done better.
- Ramon is a great singer and knows how to play guitar (which is shown through The Rayman Show ofc) but he also enjoys it like a personal hobby, to keep his thoughts clear. I just imagined him and Ashie singing together like they had back at collage as one way to reconnect.
- Ashie does want to greet Ramon to some friends she made or at least other people she knows over the past years but Ramon was hesitant for obvious reasons. For now, she just tells him about them. Most of them were hybrids.
- I always like to think he used to wear makeup while he was still Eden's poster boy because I imagined that with all of the things he had to do, his sleep schedule is messy and have to hide his eyebags. He also look for means to keep himself energetic while doing this too. So, when he rebelled, a good sleep felt like a blessing to him.... when he manages to catch a break since he's on the run ofc.
- Ramon's hoodie/trenchcoat probably smells like alcohol and vinegar, or any scent that won't be too pleasant as a means to contrast with Rayman's hoodie that smells like waffles and vanilla (and determination).
