told someone i was aroace today and their immediate response was "how terrible!"
like, i've read from others that things like this happen, but ngl, actually experiencing it myself was a little surprising.
I wasn't really all that offended tho. I've only known this person for a few days.
But still. my first response was "how is it terrible?"
I'm not exactly "missing out" on anything. How could I miss out on something that sounds like a nightmare to me?

Lately I've read one defense of casual/systemic/accidental aphobia too many and I let it get to my head.
Just because people "don't mean to hurt you", that doesn't mean they don't hurt you. That shouldn't justify hurtful dismissal. Especially after you make it clear over and over again that you don't wanna be dismissed and that it hurts.
I'm all for giving people time to get educated and open their mind to things but... Yeah typically that ain't that.
Bleh.
PS: The saddest part is that despite deciding "we should be past that" the fight ain't over for anybody anyway really. But yeah, the "they just want you to be happy" excuse helps nowhere, is my point.

saw someone on here the other day say that we don’t need aromantic and asexual representation in media because that’s a “sanitized” identity like BITCH WHAT????? IF YOU CAN ONLY SEE ASPEC PEOPLE AS CHILDREN THAT IS A YOU PROBLEM.

I genuinely hate when people invalidate demiromantic/demisexual/other labels in general by saying somethin like "OMG!!!! why do these labels exist that's how every relationship is!!!!! what has this generation come to?!!?,!?!!"
some people out here are dating someone they just met two days ago. while it literally took me two whole years of getting to know someone before having a crush on them. can y'all please not find excuses to invalidate aspec/arospec people. thanks

Reminder that it's aphobia if you tell an aspec that they need a partner to be happy.
Yes, even if you told them first that you accept them the way they are, and you're just "expressing concern".

I present to you;
YES THIS IS APHOBIC
A series where I show comments and explain why they’re aphobic (sometimes it’s not needed)
Tw aphobic below this line
Tumblr media
Aphobia. Denial of identity, ignorance, found on a “what is asexual” TikTok. Was the top comment. It is completely incorrect and is hilarious in the fact that so many aspecs have through they were bisexual in the past
Tumblr media
These to comments are very similar, and are both aphobic. You’ll actually find some asexuals get all the “play” they just aren’t interested. But by your logic, if you’re a straight male and you can’t land a girl you must be gay? Right?
Tumblr media
Hey everyone needs therapy. But I’m pretty sure your talking “correctional therapy” but I’m so sure you wouldn’t support that! Yes this is aphobic and probably one of the most obvious ones.
Don’t take this bs you are so so so valid
And the final image
Tumblr media
Ah yes the old “don’t want sex must be a plant”, gives serious consent issues here and yes aphobic

listen. I have never watched Riverdale and never will. but that doesn’t mean I’m not sO FUCKING PISSED at the polycule ending.
I’m not mad about the polyamory (I would like to stress this point for anyone who wants to come after me for this post), I’m mad that Jughead Jones, one of, like, the two aroace characters in media people have actually maybe heard of (the other being Yelena Belova) is part of this romantic, sexual relationship.
he’s ace!!!
Tumblr media
he’s aro!!!
Tumblr media
and it fucking stings that the writers thought it was okay to erase that aroace rep when there’s next to none for us to begin with.
fuck your amatonormativity and fuck your queer erasure. we aspecs deserve better.

The Worst Trope Ever Showdown: Round 1, Side A
Found the Right Person
a character is single and content with it. they say they aren't interested in dating and haven't felt this way about anyone. others keep telling them stuff like "you just haven't found the right person yet" and they always respond saying that they don't want to. but then, mostly right at the end, they do find the right one and start a relationship with them that comes very sudden and is like weirdly intense. bonus points if the character is a strong and independent woman and then in the end decides to give up her job or hobbies for love or whatever.
Propaganda:
I hate it so much. I'm aroace and people constantly ask me when I will finally find a partner or that I just haven't fount the right one yet. I do not want to find the right one! leave me alone! and seeing these characters that I can relate to, that have a good life, maybe a cool hobby and friends who is also constantly asked this and says that they don't want a partner, and then having them stripped of this aspect because suddenly they find the love of their life and drop these things because their partner wants them to, is not fun. because this implies that everyone deep inside wants to find someone, and people who say that they don't are lying. because apparently only finding love and admitting that you were wrong and actually wanted this all along can make you happy. amatonormativity at its best. people will point to these characters and be like "look, even they could find love, there is still a chance for you", fuck off
The Power of Friendship
Companionship with others is a character's greatest strength.
Propaganda:
This trope seems to be everywhere, from books to tv shows to movies. It's always at the end of the fight when everyone is about to give up and then the hero launches into a speech about this and all of a sudden they have the strength to defeat the villian even though they were literally about to die

It’s ace week again and I want to start by saying I appreciate the constant and consistent rise of overt queer representation in media. I really, really do. This post is not about that, but I did want to start by recognizing that we are definitely seeing a positive trend of queer rep and I’m not begrudging anyone that.
On the other hand.
Why is it that Sex Education, a show lauded for its depictions of teenage sexualities of all kinds, only openly discusses asexuality in one Very Special Episode?
Why is it that Brooklyn Nine Nine, a show respected for its diversity, only mentioned asexuality once and it was clearly meant as an insult?
Why is it that Faking It, a show inclusive of many teen sexualities and groundbreaking in its inclusion of a main intersex character, only references asexuality in a single throwaway line meant as a “we’ve collected them all” joke?
Why is it that Heatstopper, a show that gently yet explicitly includes all sorts of different identities in its main teen characters, doesn’t have a single reference to asexuality? And if Isaac or Tori were meant to be included as ace rep, why weren't they identified as such the way the rest of the characters were?
Why is it that Jughead, a character known in the entire run of comics going back to 1941 as having two defining characteristics: a disintrest in girls/dating and an obsession with food and who was made explicitly asexual in a 2016 run, was not made asexual in Riverdale when the opportunity presented itself?
Why is it that when fandom was presented with Good Omens they chose to call it “not queer enough” when the option to see Aziraphale and Crowley as ace or aro was very obviously there?
Why is it that I’ve seen BoJack Horseman, a show that has earned every Emmy it has won, praised as groundbreaking for having main reoccurring character Todd Chavez’s asexuality be a part of several different storylines only ever from asexual sources?
I know why. Do you?
Happy Asexual Awareness Week.
Edit: I did address this in a reblog but since a lot of recent people seem to be finding this through the tags and this is happening with enough frequency I will add it here.
To all the helpful people in the notes telling me that a) Alice Oseman is aroace or b) that there are plans for explicit ace representation in season 2 of Heartstopper or c) that there are other publications within the Heartstopper universe that examines aspec characters...thank you. I know. That is actually most of the reason Heartstopper made it onto this list.
Because what that means is, a creator that *has* explicit aspec rep in other works, *has* explicit aspec rep in the main work that is the subject of the adaptation, and *is* aspec themselves made the choice to relegate explicit aspec rep to a second season that had not yet been secured at the time of writing season 1.
Setting aside that I know fuckall about what the adaptation/creative process was like or what TPTB were like during said process, from my perspective that fucking sucked. A lot.
Happy Asexual Awareness Week.

anyways if you genuinely believe that aro/ace/aspec people in general aren’t “queer enough” and believe that they “don’t need” representation in media like all other queer people, I wish you a very get the fuck off my account </3

would love to see when in history cishet aro men/women were legally discriminated against, prosecuted, burned at the stake, shot in the streets for uuuuh not feeling romantic emotions? what???? huh????? LGBTQ isn't a fun club for anyone to find community in, it's specific purpose was and remains to fight for the legal rights and lives of marginalized sexualities/etc. no cishet person gets an invite as anything other than an ally. signed, someone's who's identified as asexual since 2010 and does not consider herself queer because it'd be wildly ignorant to do so.
If you don't consider yourself as a part of your community then good for you.
But guess what? What did you do just now? What was that??? Aro and ace people aren't discriminated against??? What did you do just now. What do you think you just did.
The world is based around romantic relationships and everyone expects you to find a partner and have sex and just in general it's considered "normal" to NOT be ace and/or aro.
You can be cishet and still queer because the lack of sexual or romantic attraction to others is still inherently queer.
I need you to shut the fuck up okay? If you don't want to consider yourself queer that's fine. But stop telling others who ARE queer that they cannot identify themselves as such.
This is the only ask like this I'll be answering. I'm not gonna argue with people who won't change their minds.
Send another ask and you're getting blocked.
