Steve who pics his skin, especially his scalp when he's anxious or feels dirty. His hair styling keeps his hands away until day 4 of not washing his hair and then he suddenly can't. stop. scratching. And it's frustrating at first, because he doesn't notice that he's been doing it. Then it's distressing, because his skin starts to get irritated and itchy and that perpetuates the cycle of anxiety and seeking relief.

Maybe Billy notices after a while how Steve's hands stray when he's distracted, like they have a life of their own. Especially on days when Steve can't sleep. And he doesn't really have the tools to talk to Steve about it or to help him, but when they're together on evenings where he can tell Steve will be particularly anxious, he'll try to keep Steve's hands and mind present.

As a skin picker this is so real.

At the beginning of their relationship, Steve actually fucking hates when Billy plays with his hair.

He loves the sensation of fingers in his hair, of someone gently detangling knots, or massaging his scalp, but he’s so worried that Billy is going to find his irritated skin, and think he’s gross.

He only began taking care of his hair so much because he was looking for shampoos and conditioners that would be gentle in his scalp, since it’s often so sore, and the fact that he doesn’t tend to fuck with it as much when it’s clean and styled.

But, after one of the Upside Down excursions, where he’s been running around, and sweating, and often bleeding, he will go to fucking town. He’s pulled out clumps of hair before, and brought his fingers away from his head to find them covered in blood.

He hates it.

And Billy can see how distressing it is, but he can also see that Steve physically can’t stop himself, especially at night.

So he wears extra rings when he’s with Steve, because he sees how much Steve loves to reach for his hand and fidget with the rings he has on. So he wears about seven per hand whenever he’s at Steve’s place, and when he can tell Steve’s hands are trying to wander up to his head, he takes his hands, and begins kissing them. Begins counting the wrinkles on his knuckles, and the scars on each finger. He tries to keeps Steve’s hands occupied with something kind, and loving, so they don’t stray to hurt.

josh is the king of helping you break bad habits. whenever he catches you biting your nails, or picking at your scabs he just lightly grabs your hand and holds it. he doesn’t make a scene, or try to make you feel bad, and he’s not aggressive when he grabs your hand. as soon as he sees your hand go towards your face from the corner of his eye he will just grab your hand and continue looking forward as to not make you feel uncomfy. if you have a rough day picking / biting josh will hold you close and smooch all of the spots that are irritated. he will softly explain that he understands how hard it is to quit doing something like that, but it’s important to leave things alone because your beautiful body is trying to heal itself!! he says that instead of biting / picking you should totally just hold his hand, or even better give him a smooch when you have the urge. in lesser words, josh is the ultimate support system for anything you try to accomplish! -🦦💓

I really need to stop this x_x

I suffer really badly from dermatillomania and always have ever since I was a stressed out overly anxious kid. I've torn up my fingers so badly, especially my right thumb over the years.

This would sound really strange to people who don't selfship, but what's been holding me back pretty well is imagining Vanilla preventing me from chewing and tearing the skin off of my fingers... He hasn't entirely prevented it from happening, but I have been able to heal some of my fingers using that method.

Vanilla wouldn't want me to hurt myself like this. He knows I can't help it sometimes, but he wants my fingers to fully heal

And if all else fails, he'll put the cone of shame on my head 🤣 (although... That might actually help- not even joking 😭)

But for now, just bandaids and attempts to self restrain!
