First drawing of 2024 and...It's Overgrown. Yea this was a wonderful first drawing to do. Uh. Thank you to @aestheticallynotdeerlightful for helping me pick out mushrooms n fungi to use for this AU. I got the inspo for Grian's redesigned fit from @/kitsuneisi's Mother Spore design. Uh.
Yea that's all I think. Gon have to put a lot of content warnings, there will be alternate versions under the cut whee Grian has no veil and no veil coloring
(reblogs with comments/tags are appreciated. Also asks about this AU because I miss it. Thankyu)

SHADE. Shade I need your minecraft worldbuilding brain.
They introduced a bunch of new shards to 1.20. The one depicting the Warden is called "mourner."
THE POSSIBILITIES?? It's not just guarding these ancient cities, it's mourning what they once were? Maybe it's similar to an iron golem, a construct built to protect and then abandoned? Maybe it caused the ruination and it mourns what it destroyed? Maybe it's just cranky we disturbed it????
I really like all of those ideas! But, as is my duty as Shade, I am going to introduce you to an extra and more horrifying possibility!
So. Sculk. It's a fungus-like corruption that spreads when it's fed by XP, which is essentially souls or life energy in-universe released at the death or breaking of something. No mobs other than the Warden can spawn in the Deep Dark, which to me suggests sculk has a level of toxicity that even the undead can't handle. Except some people - players - seem to be able to withstand it, at least for a short period of time.
There sure is a lot of sculk in ancient cities, isn't there. A whooole lotta sculk. Whole lot of that stuff that duplicates through death of other living things.
Maybe the cities were full, when the first sculk was discovered. Maybe the toxicity claimed the first person to find it and spread as a result of that, the danger growing the more it took, until it was a wave few could escape. Maybe some got away through those odd portals, the ones with higher natural resistances lasting long enough to flee. ...Or, maybe some of them, left alive long enough to watch everyone else die, couldn't bring themselves to leave. Maybe they stayed to mourn the loss, exposing themselves for longer than even they could withstand. Maybe instead of dying, they changed.
The Warden has the same size hitbox as a player. In spite of visually far exceeding that size, it can fit through the same size gaps. Almost as if it outgrew the volume the Universe had calculated for it. And its ribcage, open and filled with sculk-like texture inside, has always read as human-like to me. The sculk controls it, so the body tries to kill living things to fuel the spread. It's only natural.
But maybe, like the cordyceps fungus, the sculk leaves the brain intact while bending the muscles of the body to its own purposes. Perhaps the Warden's eyes are closed because the mourner is still mourning - the loss of their city, still, or what they lost of themselves by not turning away.

After the...Resistance Incident of Season 7, Grian has always been a bit wary around anything that spreads on its own. Every so often, he has to pluck a mushroom out from his neck from where it is trying to take over his brain and make him start another war.
But recently, the mushrooms have seemed...different. More like sculk than mycelium. And the fact that Cub is already almost completely corrupted by sculk worries Grian. After all, if Grian could become Mother Spore without showing the infection, what would it do to someone that far gone?
He's tried to confront Cub about it before, but every time he gets close some mushroom on his body that escaped notice until now sends a sculk-like trill vibrating through his bones. They're trying to communicate with Cub's sculk, he's sure of it. He can feel the pull. As much as he's scared of the outcome, maybe it's best to stay away and let this play out how it will...unless he wants to be dragged back in again himself.

TW; mycophobia
This theory has been rotting in my brain for about a year now, and I need to put it out somewhere.
So if you're familiar with Cordyceps, a type of fungus that parasitizes insects by controlling their minds, well, what I'll talk about is gonna be pretty close to this concept, so let's get down to it.
My idea is that the Smiling God is a cosmic parasite that spreads through its light just like fungi with their spores. In order to feed and propagate further, the parasite will need to find a host with a vulnerable enough mind to comfortably settle in, and in our case, it's Kevin.
The parasite may not be influential enough in small manifestations or may not fully develop in the brain of a resistant victim.
But once the parasite has fully settled, it uses its ability to control the victim's mind, causing them to feel fear and devotion towards the parasite.
One of the reasons why getting the parasite out would be a very hard task is the fact that the infected victim is practically drugged up by the spores and may feel delirious and ecstatic. After a prolonged period of time, the host can become a direct source of infection and, through close contact with other people, spread the spores and drug more victims into a state of ecstasy. The mind-controlled host convinces them to become a way of distribution or food for the parasite, which victims (in this state of mind) see as something positive and will do willingly
The parasite may have several different hosts, including animals and humans.
Despite the fact that the parasite can develop in several different hosts, it shares one consciousness to some extent (depends on the difference in cognitive development of said hosts).
and when members of the Joyos congregation mention Kevin being the one who brought the knowledge of the Smiling God to the town, in the context of this theory, I like to think of them actually referring to Kevin being infected the most severely and for the longest time !!
so yeah :)
keep in mind that i haven't read It Devours yet !! so all of this is just my silly little thoughts.

On Wither Roses
I think wither roses function like cordyceps.
For those of you that don't know, cordyceps is this mushroom here:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A clump of bright orange mushrooms being held up, against a foresty background. End ID]
Certain strains of it infect insects' bodies, threading mycelium through their nervous systems, replacing their muscle tissue with its own, flooding their brains with chemicals, and turning them into zombies to more optimally spread. In leafcutter ants, it makes them clamp onto a leaf above their anthill before the fruiting bodies sprout, raining spores down upon their brethren.
Incidentally, this is what the zombie condition in The Last of Us is based on.
Anyways.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A pixelated black rose from Minecraft, planted on magma, with lava in the background. End ID]
We get wither roses from the Wither killing things, and the Wither attacks any mob, hostile or passive, in its line of sight. Then the Wither itself is made of three Wither Skeleton skulls, plus soul sand.
Without cheating to make Potions/Arrows of Decay, there are only four ways to get the Wither effect—a direct attack by the Wither, direct contact with Wither Skeletons, direct contact with a wither rose, or eating a suspicious stew made with a wither rose. Furthermore, wither roses are still dropped when /gamerule doMobLoot is set to false, and fall as items when they have nowhere valid to plant; you can't avoid it happening, no matter what you do to influence the world.
So my theory is this: Wither Skeletons function the way they do, going towards the player rigidly and inflicting the Wither effect, because they're carriers of the wither rose's infestation. They're skeletons of the briar's former victims, repurposed and puppeted to find it better planting grounds somewhere in the Nether.
When you create the Wither, you're weaponizing that infestation. You're taking an infected host, giving the rose the fuel it needs via soul sand to not only survive, but thrive, and with the structure you make, you then give it everything it needs to start replanting itself.
The Wither isn't hostile out of malice. It's hostile out of survival—just not its own.

Pearl has been acting very strange lately. Gem and Impulse have noticed. She's avoiding them, and when they do get close, Gem swears there's something slithering under her hoodie on her neck. And when she points it out, Pearl covers it and turns away from her! Impulse swears to have seen shifting below her hoodie, and then there's the fact that she never seems to take it off! It's smells like trash, Pearl!
Stress said she found her just standing in front of her shop, and when she was close to her, Pearl just ran off screaming. What is going on!?
She's also a lot more aggressive than normal. She just killed Scar over and over again when he came to ask for help with his trash situation. The next day, all the trash on the server was gone, and the trash bins were flipped over.
Gem and Impulse have had enough! They are going to have Pearl tell them everything! But the problem is that no one has seen Pearl since the trash vanished. So they go to her home, and she isn't there, so the look around her biome and it feels like it's actually alive and looking at them.
Then they find it. A massive open trapdoor far into the mountain landscape. It's rusted and old and leads what looks like miles below the earth, even more so than the ancient cities. But Gem and Impulse know Pearl is down there she has to be. So they go in careful of course but they still go in.
Until of course, they all make it to the bottom and see it.
It is a city and not an ancient city but something more modern. There are buildings all over the place and dirt roads everywhere. And it's all destroyed. The roads have massive holes in them, and the buildings look abandoned. Small shops are everywhere and obliterated, and a fungus is growing everywhere. The same one that makes up Pearl's base.
Then Gem and Impulse find a small building, "Pearle Scent Mooning," but the screen that spelled it out is broken, so the letters are all glitches. So they then go in and they look around. Then they find her.
Pearls hoodie was on the ground and torn up, and Pearl herself was lying on the floor naked. Her eyes bloodshot and grim all over her. Fungal vines wrapped over her body and plunged into her mouth and body. Gem and Impulse hurry in ripping the vines off her, and they get her, and then they cover her with the tattered remains of her hoodie and a blanket Gem found.
They get Pearl up when she gurgles something.
"You need to leave."
Their confused until they hear something behind them, and they turn to see someone there. It's Pearl. But this Pearl is in better condition than the one their holding. And they look so much like her but fake. Gem clings onto her sword.
Then it speaks.
"You didn't think the Biome would ignore all your other hermits, did you? This one was the beginning and now your next."
And then the fake Pearl rushes towards them its own blade drawn.
-🍲anon
Pearl has never been clingy, but she's never been like this either. Impulse and Gem are used to hanging out and cuddling with her, or her surprise visits to bother them. For all of that to stop was the first warning sign. Then all the other strange behaviours...
They should've acted sooner.
Gem leaps forward, the enchantments on her sword shining in the darkness. Impulse hauls Pearl into his arms. A silent agreement is made between them, then she's fighting.
The swords clang with every blow. Gem is glad for the extra training she's been doing, because whilst she might be better than whatever this is, it doesn't seem to tire. Gem may be a good sword fighter, but she can't go on forever.
Out of the corner of her eye, she can see Impulse leaving where they entered. Gem pivots, backing towards the entrance. Her hair is is sticking to her face - she didn't expect a fight like this.
With a deep breath, she kicks her opponent's legs out and sprints. The fungus seems like it's moving, growing larger, reaching for her. She shouts Impulse's name and barely makes it inside when the ceiling explodes, collapsing being her.
Impulse has Pearl on his back and gunpowder and redstone on his fingers. They nod at each other, running towards the ladder.
Gem glances back to see tendrils of that fungus trying to reach through the rocks. They don't have much time.
"Once we get out," she says, "we fly to the shopping district." She takes a breath, taking the ladder two rungs at a time.
"Got it."
They're hermits. They'll figure this out.
Somehow.

Overgrown?? Overgrown!! Bu I only draw Impulse because I'm thinking about him. Uh. Top left is non-canon/alternate route. Everything else? Canon to the AU. Everyone has a bad time in this AU but I couldn't stop thinking about him. Uh. Mushrooms in the background were what I used as reference, Deer sent them to me to help me figure out what mushes Impulse had on his design.

X-15: SCP-ABK
- Testing with SCP-ABK/ Origin Point of Event: Simulated City-01
Day 1: SCP-ABK is introduced in a local park to ensure maximum possibility of accidental infection.
Day 2: A strange sickness where people have strange growths on their body has been reported in City-01. Authorities warn civilians to remain cautious, stay sanitary, and social distance.
Day 3: The number of those that are infected is slowly increasing despite the warning. Those who were already infected start to mysteriously disappear.
Day 4: Infection rates are down but disappearances of those that are sick, continue.
Day 5: People have reported strange black ooze and mold growing in random places. Certain families have reported random disappearances but the police and media agree to keep that part quiet.
Day 6: People have reported getting stabbed by the growing mold and becoming sick. Disappearances are now public knowledge and people are demanding answers. The local officials unfortunately don’t know much either.
Day 7: Mandatory curfews have been established to help people stay safe and try to stop the random disappearances. The government is still trying to find safe ways to get rid of the black mold appearing everywhere.
Day 10: The curfews are mostly working as disappearances have been going down but are still happening. Clean up crews have been established to get rid of the black mold; However, some workers have reported that new patches are growing in places they cleaned thoroughly.
Day 12: Strange creatures have been reported all around city-01. Mold sightings and infection rates have spiked. Authorities in City-02 and City-08 are on high alert and refusing to allow people from City-01 to enter.
Day 14: City-01 has fallen into paranoia and anarchy; the population has been cut in by a third overnight, and people have reported sudden light sensitivity on their children. Some have even reported that their children now cry or bleed the black mold despite being healthy.
Day 15: The population has been cut by two thirds; the remaining survivors have rounded up near the tunnels leading to City-02 and City-08. Authorities in City-02 were successful in keeping civilians out but City-08 failed to keep people out, riots eventually broke out and the city was left in anarchy trying to sort the people out.
Day 16: City-01 has become a ghost town, the few survivors that are still in the city have isolated themselves but are barely surviving. City-02 is constructing a wall and defensive plans to keep SCP-ABK out. They are also making plans to make another wall over the tunnel that connects to City-03 should it ever spread that far. City-08 has failed to contain SCP-ABK and now the population has been cut by one fourth. Refugees are already running to City-07, it is unknown if any of said refugees are infected.
Day 17: City-01 has been taken over by the SCP-ABK-1 instances. There are even sightings of SCP-ABK-1 instances that are roaming the city at night and even sightings of them holding non infected babies and holding the hands of uninfected children like parents. Anarchy has descended onto City-08 as the population has now been cut by two fourths overnight. City-07 has unfortunately confirmed that they have spotted sightings of strange creatures and black mold in certain areas. Out of paranoia, City-06 has blocked off the tunnel leading to City-07. City-05 is not taking any chances and has blocked off the tunnel leading to City-06 as well.
Day 18: City-08 has now descended to anarchy as the population is now cut by three fourths. Half of the remaining population has either joined with the local authorities to try and kill off SCP-ABK and root out all its hiding places while the other half is trying to go to City-07. City-07’s population has been cut by one fourth overnight. Its authorities have failed to keep the order as 08 citizens entering the city have caused a panic. City-06 has set up traps and deadly barricades to keep 08 citizens and 07 citizens out. There are also armed guards around who are permitted to shoot both infected and non-infected civilians who get too close. Flamethrowers have also been distributed to burn the bodies in order to prevent further infection. Government Officials of City-06 are trying to cooperate with City-05 to show that the infection has not reached them.
Day 19: City-08 has completely fallen to SCP-ABK with SCP-ABK-1 instances now raising the remaining children at night but hunting any living survivors. City-07 has been sent into anarchy as a majority of SCP-ABK-1 instances went into the city that night causing it to be cut by three fourths that night. City-06 has been successful in keeping the infected out. City-05 has brought down its walls to allow transportation between the cities again.
Day 20: City-07 has fallen to SCP-ABK, City-02 through City-06 are the only cities not infected. They continue to plan for the possibility of SCP-ABK breaking through the walls but are sure that there’s no way they can get through.
Day 21: Random children all throughout City-02 through City-06 suddenly explode and spread SCP-ABK in a spore like gas. It turns out that the SCP-ABK-1 instances have been kidnapping children from other cities and replacing them with SCP-ABK replicas without anyone realizing it. Upon this the remaining cities fall into anarchy. With no one maintaining the walls or tunnels the SCP-ABK-1 instance flooded the cities at night.
Day 22: There are barely any survivors and even fewer who aren’t infected. At this point the Foundation has declared the test over.
Result: Clean up teams were sent in with necrosis venom, chemical sprayers with acid canisters, and flamethrowers to clean the entire cities. To prevent infection the non-infected children under SCP-ABK-1's care were killed off as well. It took twenty days to get rid of SCP-ABK and rebuild the cities. The Foundation has concluded that SCP-ABK is more dangerous than originally hypothesized and much smarter as well. Should SCP-ABK ever be unleashed on the public it can lead to an XK Class End-of-the-World Scenario within a year, possibly much shorter. As such, sending SCP-ABK to Site-AG has been concluded as the right choice.
.
Addendum X-15
