It's super gross how much whitewashed bullshit still occurs in Overwatch to this day. It's been 7+ YEARS, STOP DOING THIS!!!!!

This dogshit is unacceptable and who ever does management/quality checks on the art NEEDS to be fired bc how tf do you approve something like this.

And the new skin has Sojourn's normal skin tone, so it's not lighting make the face white in that spray. It's deliberate!!!

New Symmetra sprays also lightens her skin... smfh im tired.

I'm gathering the mental energy to do a mass edit (and a ref page for characters bc it would be nice to have a master post) but god damn it it shouldn't be up to fans to fix art and not perpetuate racist, colorist art. It's not hard to fucking use a color picker tool.

These are professional artists, they should know better than to whitewash like this.

I know it’s a -j profile. But that’s still not an excuse. This is pretty much the only file that gives an official idea of what his race is.

Speaking as someone who 1) Has recently watched all of Trigun, 2) Has read a good portion of the manga, AND 3) Is also hyped for the Studio Orange remake, I think it's pretty important to remind everyone--

--that some shit just ain't adding up.

I've already seen a few posts (here and elsewhere) trying to wave away or straight up lie about Wolfwood being whitewashed. And while, again, I am a huge fan of Studio Orange and am greatly looking forward to Trigun Stampede--y'all this shit ain't excusable.

I have no way of knowing what Studio Orange intended with "this," if they had any input at all, or whether this is coming from a place of maliciousness or just straight up ignorance (not an excuse either, btw). But come on, guys. Don't go to the trouble of making up very obvious ass lies to excuse a shitty pattern of behavior.

You also don't need to point out to me--or to other Trigun fans for the matter; we're perfectly aware of this--that Yasuhiro Nightow was a little "inconsistent" over the years with the exact shade of Wolfwood's skin tone. I personally find this weak "argument" to be pathetic.

Not only is it a completely pointless thing to even bring up, it also serves as a poorly veiled attempt to divert attention away from the most obvious as fuck fact: Wolfwood is not white. He was never white.

What the fuck are you even trying to say by bringing this up? 'Cause it sounds an awful lot like you're saying "Well, since Yasuhiro didn't use the exact same shade for Wolfwood, than technically that proves Wolfwood isn't an actual POC character."

Whitewashing is a real thing and it does keep happening.

I am by no means trying to tell people that they shouldn't watch Trigun Stampede or that they shouldn't find enjoyment in the show. No piece of media is completely unproblematic. This is not a wild take, it's a simple fact. It is perfectly fine to acknowledge what makes a piece of media problematic and/or harmful--AND to still find enjoyment in the parts that are not.

No, my real issues is this: Stop fucking lying. Stop making excuses for this kind of bullshit. Stop making up shit to try and trick people into thinking that whitewashing isn't real, that it isn't happening, and that it doesn't have any real harm.

I saw Kalim's Tsum Groovy Card art, and...oh, boy, he and Jamil are really whitewashed. It's not the first time this has happened either. I've noticed that the dark-skinned characters have been losing some melanin in their Groovy art lately. Thanks to this, I've seen a couple accusations about how the developers hate dark-skinned people. Honestly, I don't think that's true in the slightest. Instead I think this has to do with the fact it's a Japanese game.

Remember Japan is a mostly homogeneous country. While black and brown Japanese people exist, especially if they moved from abroad, the norm is still light-skinned East Asian people. Some have never seen a black or brown person in real life before.

Because of this, the average Japanese person doesn't have a concept of how dark skin actually works, and a lot of things fall through the cracks, so they default to how it works on their own skin tone. It's kinda the same logic for why some white anglo TWST fic authors make the Scarabia Dou, Jack and Leona blush in fanfics, despite the fact no one would be able to tell unless they put their hand on their cheek—just ignorance. The latest card is no exception. When a lighter-skinned person is shoved into a light source like that, they either tend to get lighter or become a silhouette if they stand in direct sunlight. The opposite is true for darker skin.

This doesn't excuse the whitewashing in the slightest and I think colourism is a part of it as well (since that's a BIG issue in Asian countries), but I think that's the most likely reason why it's happening for the most part. Basically, willful ignorance, especially since this isn't the first time that this has happened. To combat this, I think the developers, both for TWST and Tsums ones, should do a lot more research into this topic to prevent this from happening time and time again. Knowing how this game is, that doesn't seem very likely. Right now, you can switch the card to its original state without the weird white washing.

TLDR: I don't the whitewashing of the dark-skinned character is done with malicious intent, instead it's most likely thanks to the developers not understanding how dark skin works compared to their own and willful ignorance. But it doesn't excuse it.
