dude I've gotta ask. in all these years I've never heard of there being any twenty one pilots lore, what is it?
(tw suicide mention) it's a LOT to sum up, and varies from album to album, era to era, with many different fan interpretations, but a brief description of the lore as I understand it is this (there is a tldr):
There is a place called Dema, a dystopian city ruled by nine Bishops in red hoods. Dema is a theocracy and subscribes to the religion of Vialism. Vialism is the worship of artificial light. The biggest way someone can devote themselves to Vialism is by killing themselves, and all who do this are buried in a special graveyard of neon tombstones surrounding Dema.
Outside of Dema, there is a resistance, a group of people called Banditos. They live in Trench, a safe haven. They cover themselves in yellow tape to protest the bishops' red, and use fire to protest the worship of artificial light. They save people from Dema sometimes.
There used to be a guy named Clancy who escaped Dema, and he did a lot of stuff, but the important thing is that a Bishop, named Keons, brought him back to Dema. The most recent album from Twenty One Pilots is called Scaled And Icy. If you rearrange the letters, you get the phrase "Clancy Is Dead". How he died, or even if he is truly dead, is a mystery, but most people think he killed himself in devotion to Vialism.
A guy named Tyler, the lead singer, used to live in Dema, but was rescued by Banditos. Unfortunately, he was kidnapped by a Bishop named Nico and he was brought back to Dema. He's being forced by the Bishops to make propaganda for the people still inside Dema.
All of this stuff was learned by fans by digging through different (now-defunct) secret websites, digging into codes, playing songs backwards to make out reversed audio, decoding messages from sockpuppet Twitter accounts run by Tyler Joseph, ect.
TL;DR - There's a dystopian city, Dema. There's nine Bishops who rule Dema. There's a resistance called Banditos who save people from Dema. The Bishops are making the lead singer do propaganda for them.
Two good videos to watch for the lore is this one x which is twelve minutes long, or if you're REALLY wanting to know stuff, this three-hour-long video explains things pretty aptly x.
