Some important lines from stormbringer about Chuuya's feelings on Dazai at the time.

Please read fully before getting angry. This isn't just Soukoku hate I promise.

"I told you, Chuuya."

He looked up in the direction of the sudden voice. It was a familiar voice, one that belonged to the person he hated most in the world.

"Your birth itself was a mistake. We're the same. Is there really a point to suffering through all that pain for a life that isn't even real?"

This isn't Chuuya talking to someone else here, this isn't pride or embarrassment making him hide his hidden affection, its a description of his genuine feeling. Verlaine who just killed his friends, N who is currently torturing him, neither of them are as hated by Chuuya as Dazai is.

but it isn't that simple.

Chuuya wanted more than anything to slice off the ear the voice was whispering into. He could see Dazai's wavering shadow by his side, and he wanted to gouge out his eyes.

This visceral anger to his vision of Dazai feels...too strong of a reaction. I know Dazai has done some fucked up things to Chuuya, but none of them should be so bad that he would hate him this much. and that what made me realise Chuuya doesn't hate Dazai, he has tied Dazai to what he hates most about himself.

A crippling feeling of isolation, being so far above everyone around you it feels like your a different species (Dazai in intelligence, Chuuya in combat)

Dazai gave into that, and let it swallow him. So to Chuuya, who fights so desperately to stay alive and connect with people despite his origins. He seems like the worst person in the world.

This line really cements this

"Thats just proof that you at least somewhat believe what I'm saying. because deep down inside, you're the same as me."

"Shut up, shut up, shut up! I'm me! I'm not some piece of shit like you!"

Dazai is everything Chuuya has tried to suppress in himself for years and years.

I firmly believe Chuuya grew to care for Dazai after years of working with him, its just the kind of person he is, but I fundamentally disagree that he never hated Dazai.

Ultimately , this post was to point out how their dynamic changed and shifted over time, and how there's more to them then some people think

Actually now that I'm thinking about it, rimlaine makes a way better senior gen of soukoku than fukumori does. There are WAYYY stronger parallels.

A Soukoku analysis -

it’s in the eyes

As we’ve all seen Asigiri has mentioned how important the eyes are to each of his characters.

I was rereading the manga and noticed something, in every interaction Dazai has with Chuuya his eyes are drawn light and full of hope/love/whatever you want to call it.

Above we have the first time Chuuya gets introduced is the first time I can distinctly remember Dazais eyes being light for more than a second.

Here we see Dazai doing his second favorite activity: teasing Chuuya. And his eyes are so light that you couldn’t even guess they’re mahogany in the color rendering.

(Insert- look at these gay ass bitches)

I will repeat EVERYTHING that asigiri does with the eyes is INTENTIONAL.

Soukoku have been described as soulmates by asigiri, it wouldn’t surprise me to add this layer of detail as well, when it comes to these two there are no limits to the level of detail we might see.

Everything is a secret code, or an inside joke, or something lost in the reader, but a secret known between Soukoku.

I think chuuya is Dazai a humanity in a way, he brought him back from a really dark place. (I personally don’t think that Dazai would have approached Oda if chuuya hadn’t befriended him first.) From the start we are shown a bond that is supposedly unbreakable between them, that’s why I think in scenes where Dazai is playing the villain in recent chapters we don’t see his eyes as much. Chuuya’s presence makes it harder for him to fake it all.

One thing I don't see a lot of people mention when talking about the generations of Double Black is the characters responsible for forming each duo (Natsume with Zenki Soukoku, Mori with skk, and Dazai for sskk).

How do you view each duo in the context of their "parent" figure? And why do you think skk wasn't passed down through Fukuzawa or Chuuya?

What I'll say here draws heavily from this post, so definitely check it out!

First thing to consider is that though the name Double Black implies that both members of the duo are 'dark' characters, one of them always has a personality that fits more with the 'light' side. Both characters draw heavily on the parts of their personality that they themselves consider 'dark,' but they are objectively reflections of yin and yang- dark and light, balancing each other out. Of the Soukoku pairings we know, the 'light' or yang characters are Fukuzawa, Chuuya & Atsushi; the 'dark' or yin characters are Mori, Dazai & Akutagawa.

With this in mind, it becomes easier to pick up on patterns that only affect the yin or yang members of our skk duos. Yin characters are more sadistic. Yang characters have weird haircuts. Yin characters form new skk duos. Yang characters are the 'more masculine' ones. Fukuzawa and Chuuya didn't pass down Double Black simply because they are too heavily associated with the light, if you get what I'm saying.
