obviously, everyone was surprised by the depth of mei's voice. her deep voice for a pretty girl has directly put everyone in agreement — her voice quickly went viral on the internet and aroused the curiosity of many kpop fans. in less than an hour, the girls saw their followers climb like crazy.
many were waiting very impatiently to see what the fantasy concept of neverland would look like, and we must admit that they were not disappointed — by the elegant but energetic choreographies, and the breathtaking fairy-tale stage decorations, the members of neverland quickly made a strong and impactful impression.
despite her young age, jinny has shown her determination and professionalism in every performances. many were impressed by her mastery and skills — she is obviously not called golden maknae of the 4th gen for nothing.
some people have quickly made the connection between the euni of nvrld, and the euni waacking star of tiktok — if some people already knew she was planning to debut in a group, others were more pleasantly surprised. with her impressive talents and amazing dance skills, she knew how to make the unanimity with the interested fans. quickly, people on the internet rushed to talk about her, but especially about her impressive and perfectly mastered dance break in their flagship song 'second star'.
many of their family members were there during their first live performance — people immediately spotted bina's twin brother who, not surprisingly, looks exactly just like her. but also some of their close friends. among them, the young member of txt, yojin, was present for the youngest of the group. internet users did not fail to immortalize their emotional reunion at the end of the show.
despite quinn's easily noticeable shyness, she was able to endure perfectly well the role of spokesperson during their first win. if the trembling of her tiny hands were visible to the naked eye, remi's reassuring hand on her hip was only noticeable for certain attentive eyes.
talking about remi, our awesome big sister ended up trending on twitter for the most adorable of reasons. indeed, photos of her proudly and tenderly admiring her members have melted tinkerbells' hearts. they were quick to point out that even though remi seems to be strict in her work, she is still like a second mother to her friends — a caring and loving one.
in addition to that, fans could see during these four weeks of promotion, that many friendships were created. especially between mei and the member of ateez, lua, who seemed very close after a performance. atinys and tinkerbells were quick to point out the difference in personality of the girls — but that didn't stop them from becoming good friends very quickly.
during an after show live, mei and euni told a funny and crazy story about one of their performances — while she was supposed to get ready, the stylists realized that euni's outfit was missing. panic was quickly felt, because there were only a few minutes left before the beginning of the performance. a chance for them : euni was wearing an outfit quite similar to the ones of her members. then after some touch-ups and accessorizing, under the wise advice of mei, her outfit had gone from disastrous to burn the stage. the fans didn't even realize it.

Jack Fact Sheet
(Voted 11th-most-popular-character on the jpn server in a combination of seven different character-ranking surveys held throughout 2021)
Stoic and with a strong sense of honor, Jack refuses to fall in rank behind anyone who is not stronger than himself. He also has a strong sense of justice that, according to his voice actor, is entirely his own, only coincidentally coinciding with what is objectively the right decision from time to time.

He does not like using tricks or misdirection to achieve his goals, insisting in everything from Book 2 to Beansfest that everyone around him play fair. Jack takes his studies seriously, performs well on tests and has an excellent memory. He says that he goes to bed at 10pm every night and goes running at 5am every morning, often sharing parts of his morning runs with Vil.
The official fan book states that his name might come from the word “Jackal”. His wish in the “Wish Upon a Star” event, to be able to run through snow fast enough to beat a reindeer towing a sled, may or may not be a reference to the wolves in Disney’s Frozen. (Due to being from the same area as Vargas there is also a rumor that he may have been inspired by the wolves in Beauty and the Beast, Reirei from Disney’s The Lion Guard or even Disney’s White Fang, but these are all unproven theories.)
Although strict and serious with others, he is equally so with himself, saying outright that he would never allow himself to do things that he won’t allow others to do.
Jack is quick to take action once he is convinced he is doing the right thing, accusing both the Leech twins and then Epel of sneaking a dangerous potion into the school cafeteria and forcing them to show him the contents of their briefcase and pockets despite their refusal. He is ultimately proven wrong when the source of the smell is revealed to be onions (his most disliked food) and he apologizes to Epel, offering to pay the Leech twins for the odorous moisturizer they had been transporting.
He runs afoul of Jade again in his lab wear vignette, making room for his cactus in the greenhouse by throwing out a log where Jade had been attempting to cultivate mushrooms. When confronted, he confesses that he had believed it was trash, and again takes responsibility, this time by working part-time for a week in Mostro Lounge.
Jack is very athletic, taller and more muscular than both Leona and Ruggie. While a talented spell drive player he struggles with the teamwork aspect of the sport, focusing moreso on what he can accomplish on his own rather than integrate with the rest of the team.
He can work in a group when necessary, however, such as when he taught Ruggie and Azul to “herd” members of the opposite team during Beansfest, leading to their victory.
Unlike both Leona and Ruggie, Jack is from the Land of Pyroxene (known as the Shaftlands on ENG-server) along with Cater, Vargas, Trein and childhood friend Vil.
There is a mistranslation in ENG-server's "Wish Upon a Star" event where Deuce says to Jack, "You're from a cold place that's farther north than the Shaftlands, right?". This insinuates that Jack does not live in Shaftlands themselves, but he does. The original line is closer to, "You live in a northern part of the Shaftlands, right?".
He tries to refer to Vil as Vil-senpai, given that Vil is two grades above him, but he will also occasionally slip and call him “Vil-san”. He seems to be trying to downplay his childhood relationship with Vil, admitting to knowing “someone” before entering the school when asked by Ace, but not saying who.
It seems, however, that the two were fairly close and attended school together “for a year or two”. Jack taught Vil how to snowboard and ski, once built him a throne out of snow, showed Vil a secret place to watch the aurora and saved him from bullies (though Vil assures him he could have handled them himself).
Jack has great respect for the stronger students such as Riddle, and when Riddle compliments his perceptiveness (he notices Ace cheating at a card game), his tail begins to wag in excitement. Riddle is fond of Jack as well, praising him for being hardworking, honest and for his character.
He has similar respect but more complex feelings for Leona, of whom he knew and admired long before he entered the school. Jack acknowledges that Leona is extremely powerful and would be able to accomplish so much if he were to try, but Jack is frustrated with the reality that Leona has made the personal choice not to invest any effort into what he does (due to his own wealth of personal issues, of which Jack is only vaguely aware).
Book 2 is an emotional time for Jack, who feels betrayed by his former idol who is a different man from who he’d thought he’d be, but he still has homescreen lines such as “Seeing Leona lead the students reminds me of how great he is” and “he looks so strong”.
In his dorm vignette, we learn that Jack also respects Ruggie immensely, waiting outside of the school to greet him every morning (despite how they live in the same dorm), fetching his towel and broom for flight lessons and holding his umbrella in the rain, all despite Ruggie’s constant protests.
When Ruggie tells him to serve Leona instead, he responds “I don’t want to break the pack’s chain of command”. When asked why, he responds “I was impressed by the way Ruggie never abandoned Leona and did everything he could to serve him.”
Jack asks Ruggie to become his older brother, and Ruggie offers the compromise of “underling”, which Jack accepts with the caveat, “Someday, I WILL earn your respect!”
We learn from Jack himself in the Phantom Bride event that wolf-type beastmen only ever have one romantic partner. He says, “My parents and my grandparents…from morning until night, during meals and on walks, they’re always together”, and he longs for a similar relationship for himself in the future. Jack has an 11-year-old brother, a 7-year-old sister and says he does not have very many friends back home. His favorite food, pear compote, is what his mother would use as a topping when she made waffles.
Jack is a talented snowboarder, though he enjoys skiing and ice skating as well.
Rook refers to him as “Monsieur Tough Guy”, while Floyd calls him Uni-chan (sea urchin) for being “spiky” (both physically and his personality, using the word 'tsun' from 'tsundere').
His verbal tic, “Don’t misunderstand me”, is what he often says when he is too shy to say something straightforward.
In the Port Fest event Jack takes Ruggie out to a restaurant he wants Ruggie to try. The restaurant is closed, but Ruggie identifies a money-earning opportunity and leaves Jack by himself, leading Jack to return to the school alone without lunch or his beloved senpai. At this point in the game (22/8/28) we have learned that Jack cannot actually play the flute, but he was determined to learn in time for the festival, being tutored by Floyd. After receiving advice from Leona, Jack happens upon a creative solution to their problem.
In his birthday vignette Ruggie teases Jack for being such close friends with Epel. Jack explains that they’re just classmates, but they do get along very well as Epel "has more spirit than others" and they both enjoy talking about exercise.
Jack’s unique magic, “Unleash Beast” (Japanese: Howl to Break the Moonlit Night), transforms him into a wolf. He was the first of the year-one students to reveal (or learn?) his unique magic. He can still speak as a wolf and he becomes extremely sensitive to smells, which can prove handy for tracking but strong scents can disorient him. He can run 60 to 70 kilometers per hour in his wolf form, but as every moment as a wolf is a drain upon his magical power he must be careful about using it.

The actor Matthew Perry, who has been found dead at his home aged 54, brought a wry sense of humour to the role of Chandler Bing in Friends, the American sitcom featuring six twentysomethings in Manhattan facing the ups and down of everyday life.
“Chandler’s a guy who’s just not comfortable in his own skin – he’s got a great excuse to be funny,” said Perry of the sarcastic, neurotic character in the programme that ran from 1994 to 2004. “He’s an exaggerated form of me.”
The neurosis partly came from Chandler experiencing the divorce of his parents when he was nine and using humour as a defence mechanism. It echoed Perry’s own life, with his mother and father splitting up by his first birthday.
Through his work in “statistical analysis and data reconfiguration”, the character pulled in more money than the other friends – Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Ross (David Schwimmer) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) – although he hated his job.
Chandler had already met Monica Geller at college before they became neighbours in Greenwich Village, where he shared an apartment with Joey. By the end of the fourth series, the relationship had gone from being close friends to lovers and, three years later, they were husband and wife. Unable to have children of their own, they adopted twins, with their birth as a central storyline, alongside Ross and Rachel reuniting, in Friends’ final episode, which attracted more than 50 million viewers in the US.
By then, the programme’s impact on popular culture had spread well beyond its homeland. Joey’s “How ya doin’?” and Chandler’s “Could I be any more …” broke into the language of its young audience. The part earned Perry worldwide fame that continues with Netflix bringing the sitcom to a new generation.
Nevertheless, stardom did nothing to help the actor to overcome his own vulnerabilities. In 1997, Aniston said: “His feelings get hurt. He cares what people think. He even bruises easily.”
Perry’s battles with his personal demons first hit the headlines halfway through the sitcom’s run. In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry recalled a journey to alcoholism that went from beer and wine at 14 to drinking vodka by the quart, as well as getting addicted to prescription drugs.
In 1997, he checked into a Minnesota rehab clinic for 28 days when he became hooked on a painkiller and appetite suppressant after a jet-ski accident and a 35lb weight loss. Three years later, he was hospitalised with pancreatitis. In 2001, he abruptly left the set of the film Serving Sara (released the following year) to go into rehab again.
Perry reflected that by 2018, at the age of 49, he had spent more than half his life in treatment centres. That year he suffered pneumonia and an exploded colon caused by opiod overuse, resulting in time on life support and two weeks in a coma.
He converted his Malibu home into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, Perry House, in 2013, but closed it two years later, citing expensive running costs.
He had been drug and alcohol-free for 18 months before the screening in 2021 of Friends: The Reunion, a one-off special bringing back together the programme’s six stars.
Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Matthew was the son of Suzanne (nee Langford, later Morrison), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. He grew up mainly in Ottawa when his mother returned to her home country and eventually became press secretary to the then prime minister, Pierre Trudeau. In 2017, Perry revealed that he and another pupil at Rockcliffe Park elementary school had beaten up Justin Trudeau, Pierre’s son and current Canadian premier. Trudeau responded on Twitter (now X): “I’ve been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn’t wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch @MatthewPerry?”
While studying at Ashbury college, Perry became a top-ranking junior tennis player. He practised up to 10 hours a day, but switched that determination to acting after travelling to Los Angeles when he was 15 and being reunited with his father. “I wanted to be famous so badly,” he told the New York Times in 2002. “You want the attention, you want the bucks, and you want the best seat in the restaurant.”
He made an impression with leading roles in sitcoms: Chazz Russell in Second Chance (1987), retitled Boys Will Be Boys for its second series in 1988, Billy Kells in Sydney (1990) and Matt Bailey in Home Free (1993) before Friends came along.
Perry’s big-screen debut came as River Phoenix’s best friend in A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988), but he never became the film star he hoped to be despite appearances in Fools Rush In (1997), Three to Tango (1999), The Whole Nine Yards (2000) and its sequel, The Whole Ten Yards (2003), both alongside Bruce Willis.
He stuck with television. Switching to drama, he had a short run as Joe Quincy, a Republican lawyer, in The West Wing in 2003, and starred in another Aaron Sorkin series, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006-07). His own sitcom idea, Mr Sunshine, with him playing Ben Donovan, a San Diego arena operations manager, was dropped after a short run in 2011. The following year he starred as Ryan King, a sportscaster, in Go On and later played Oscar Madison in a revival of The Odd Couple (2015-17). He also wrote and starred in the play The End of Longing, which debuted in London’s West End in 2016.
He had relationships with many high-profile actors including Julia Roberts, Minnie Driver and Lizzy Caplan. From 2020 to 2021, he was engaged to Molly Hurwitz, a talent manager.
His parents survive him.

DEV LOG: July 2023
Just a short update from us to reflect on the very busy last two months, and what's coming next!
We spent most of this month taking a break. (Releasing a game is a lot of stress and nerves, but we're super thankful for the reception!) Melli and I took a vacation to Norway (yay), and it was our first time meeting in person since 2021. Sadly, we both got sick on our last day (not so yay) but it was still awesome to get to see each other again.
This past week, we've focused on writing for the DLC and getting the missing CGs from Stephanie x Jace's route done. They will be added in a patch update in early August, alongside some other bug fixes. (If there's anything you'd like to report, it's best to shoot us an email at foxglovegamesteam(@)gmail.com.)
We also wanted to quickly answer some FAQs about the DLC and other things. Read more under cut.
When will the DLC release?
This year. We're not giving a date until we know for certain.
How long will the DLC be?
Depends on how many of the bonus stories you play.
How many bonus stories will there be?
There's a Beach Episode, where you get to see the twins and all the love interests interact (with variations depending on your couple) - we know a lot of people have been asking for more twin moments, and this should definitely satisfy that! There's also short wedding-themed stories. And lastly, love interest POV stories where you get to see the love interest's thoughts on their relationship with the protagonists. They all vary in length/word count.
What will the DLC cost?
TBD. But it will be similarly priced to other visual novel DLCs.
What should I do until the DLC releases?
Cry until it comes out, of course. You could replay the game, drop us a review on Steam, and support some other awesome indie devs (there's so many cool projects). Our Patreon is on break this month, but starting next month, we're going to back to posting weekly previews for Trouble Comes Twice (DLC) and our upcoming projects like NOVISSIME. So you're more than welcome to subscribe and join us over there! Any funds we get from patreon go towards paying our artists for the DLC, and developing the demos for our new games.

Besides TCT, what are you working on next?
Our fantasy-adventure visual novel NOVISSIME remains in production, but there won't be a demo this year as we need more time for the gorgeous art.
Melli and I will instead focus on planning/writing for a third visual novel project! It's a supernatural crime drama, starring a hot-headed demon cop (male protagonist) and a vengeful vigilante vampire (female protagonist). We can't say much about this project yet as it's still so early in development, but we love the concept and we think you're going to love it too when the time comes to reveal more!

Artemis and Apollo
I was working on a post about my thoughts on the relationships between Jimin, Jungkook and Tae before the Tailor of Chaos made his appearance and wrecked my brain. I had a lot written and was trying to edit it down so it wouldn’t be a several-chapter-long study about each of those three’s personalities and why I think they do what they do. I’ll get back to it later maybe.
So I am putting that aside in order to delve into these concepts of Jimin’s. I have to admit, it is intimidating how he comes up with these ideas. I have a lot of thoughts about all this and I am trying to put some order to it but the key word in all of it truly is chaos. The more I see, the more I am in awe and the more confused I am trying to reconcile all the various versions of Jimin.
I am thinking about all the years we had cutie sexy lovely Jimin and Mochi and Chimmie. I am wondering in his WeLive last week when he mentioned that he did some self-reflecting on why he cut his hair short in April (if that translation is indeed accurate and that IS what he meant) if he cut his hair because it was a way to hang on to “youth” one last time?
And then he drops these heavy ideas on us about id and ego... the inner tug of war between primitive impulses and morality and the rational and controlling mediator that supposedly prevents either from overpowering the other. A inner turmoil of push and pull...
His choice of white: purity, morality .... and black: pleasure, sensuality
And the images of the cracked statues put back together and sealed with gold. Imperfections that have now turned into something beautiful and precious holding it all together.

I mentioned in a post or two ago that I wondered if the Tailor of Chaos concept is what summoned the Black Swan stage outfits with the lack of shirts and the body chains and yes, it was all being created in about the same timeframe. These photos were planned at the end of last year. The teaser video opens with Jimin wearing the same LV hoodie he was wearing for this VLive back on October 20, 2021. ABOUT A YEAR AGO!
The temporary tattoos: the words tailor of chaos and Artemis and when I flipped the image I see the word Filter. We are seeing Jimin revisiting Filter. Who is Artemis? In Greek mythology, Artemis is goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity. Artemis is also associated with the moon. In the myth of Actaeon, when this young hunter sees her bathing naked, he is transformed into a deer by the angered goddess, and is then devoured by his own hunting dogs who do not recognize their own master. THAT is truly conceptual...and is then devoured by his own dogs that don’t recognize their own master.... all kinds of imagery there that can be compared to life as an idol and especially as a member of BTS. Their own industry (dogs) devour them because they don’t recognize them as the one (master) who is bringing them more success than ever...
Artemis has a twin brother named Apollo. Apollo is the god of music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, and is associated with the Sun and light, poetry, and more!!!!!!!
Other aspects of Artemis: In spite of her status as a virgin who avoided potential lovers, there are multiple references to Artemis' beauty and eroticism.

Jimin says “the original” Jimin... Is he speaking about the evolution of his idol persona? or the real Jimin? because idol Jimin began as manly man Jimin and then idol Jimin became softer and softer and then androgyny (Artemis is female) really entered the chat at some point and has been intermingling with cute bread cheeks Jimin, roundy boba head Jimin, chapter 2 Jimin, etc. Pick your damn Filter.
Has Jimin been toying with this Artemis concept for a long time now? Maybe we will find out when we see more about his photo folio.
I am more or less rambling and I really am not well versed on Greek mythology except for what I have researched to talk about this. But I do understand the concepts of psychology that he’s tossing around in these images and I do love how he exposes some of his own personal psyche in his presentation of himself. I flipped these photos around that he was looking at on the table:
Jungkook remarked that he thought out of all the members’ photo folio concepts, his vampire concept was really way out there, but my baby, Jimin’s concept is so out there, it will soar over the intelligence and maturity level of so many and just be pretty pictures to them. Jimin is CHALLENGING OUR INTELLECT with these images and that is a very very unique and sexy concept coming from him.

OH MY GOD you know EXACTLY the image of how I've been feeling for so long about this especially in the past week you are IN FOR IT
Since your question is so broad, I'm just going to dump all the very basics, the core of the AU in my mind if you will, which honestly might be the best starter for anyone who's interested in this concept that's been rattling around my brain.
I started making the AU in 2021 mostly as a joke or fun concept, and the Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales of that year that had a bit of Luke joining the Empire just added to the flames.
Soon I was thinking about that "what-if" thread -- what IF Luke was a part of the Empire? What if he grew up there? What WOULD his relationship with Vader be like? What about everyone else? What about the Force?
I based a lot of the story on my head on the canon events of the Original Trilogy and Mandalorian (mostly season 1-2). I pull a little bit from Legends (especially since I've been reading through Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy) and from my own Dinluke obsession because -- uh this is MY AU and if I want Dinluke to happen it'll happen. I've even thought about where the AU would go in the Sequel Trilogy timeline because I do like the Sequel characters, and by then the AU has changed so much that I basically do what I want.
A lot of what I think about has less to do with the trajectory of the war in the galaxy and more about who Luke Skywalker would even BE if he were raised to go down the path of the Dark Side -- and how his relationships with his friends, family, etc. would change or stay the same.
The point in time where the AU basically starts is when Luke is taken by the Empire as a baby and raised by Darth Vader to become his apprentice. Luke spends his life idolizing his father, almost to an unhealthy amount. He's a mold of Vader and JUST VADER, and yet, somewhere down the line, Luke begins to carve out his own destiny, his new sense of self creating tensions with his father.
These tensions meet their peak when Luke and Leia cross paths. Their meeting sets them both off on journeys of self-discovery, of questioning what family is, of finding their places in the galaxy's war, and of their relationships with the Force. The Death Star funnily enough is what brings them together and drives a wedge in their relationship from the very beginning.
Luke for a while had been growing a disdain for Palpatine and his idea of "might makes right", his interpretation of the Dark Side of the Force that Luke fundamentally disagrees with -- because at the core of him, despite the changes, Luke still is an idealist at heart, he still has HOPE and trust in the Force that no one else has. When he finds his lost sister, sees that Palpatine uses his power to destroy Alderaan, all that Leia had, it's the final nail in the coffin for him.
Leia grows up very similarly the way she had in canon, though meeting with Luke leads her to question what family is meant to mean to her. She gains an intense curiosity of the Force, of the powers she has, because she sees how it affects Luke's perspective, a way of seeing the universe at war that she can somehow understand. Because she eventually walks the path of the Jedi, alone, she struggles with the responsibilities of holding the New Republic together, protecting her friends/family like Han and Chewie, and finding herself and her part in the Force in the midst of ALL of that, mirroring the same kind of struggle that Luke goes through as well.
It's VADER in particular that keeps the twins at arms length. To Luke, he is the man that is everything Luke looked up to his whole life, the only family he had, and a victim of Palpatine's control, who he knew they both hated. To Leia, Vader is the man that willingly acted as an arm of power for Palpatine's war, the man that held her back on the Death Star as it destroyed the only home and family she knew.
Luke spends a lot of time trying to fix the wrongs of the Empire against Leia, and Leia sees this, and she knows that Luke has a core of GOOD in him somewhere. However, he can't let go of Vader, he can't let go of the Dark Side of the Force, and Leia cannot sit well with that.
After that, a lot of what I'm interested in is post-Palpatine's defeat, when Luke takes over and makes a new empire from the ground up (The Neo Galactic Empire). He's fixated on renewing the Sith religion, in negotiation versus acts of force, in finding more of his family history, in letting the Empire heal as the Force intends. He wants to be a conduit, not a controller, of the Force, even from the Dark Side. He becomes attached to all of it, and slowly, it consumes him. This is basically the part in the story where I make a lot of stuff up as I want to, like with Din and Grogu becoming a part of Luke's life, Leia's journey as a Jedi and Council-Member of the New Republic, and the outlying Imperial Remnant that remains a threat to both the New Republic AND the Neo Empire.
Through all of this I'm also interested in dissecting the Dark Side of the Force itself, how someone as idealistic as Luke Skywalker would interpret or mold its ways, especially when it comes to power and attachments, and how Luke uses this knowledge in his rule, his relationships, and later, his own teachings.
Later in his life Luke really starts to become a whirlwind of questions of who he is. How much of himself is the Force? How much of himself is Vader? How much of himself is that undying light that lays dormant inside of him, the light that Leia continuously reminds him is there somewhere?
I've compared Sith Luke Skywalker multiple times to a red giant star, a star that quickly grows, trying to give off as much light and warmth as possible, but that scorches everything it touches, before its life ends in a destructive supernova and supermassive black hole. I'm tearing Luke Skywalker apart piece by piece, rebuilding him, seeing how much of him changes, what is left, what causes everything else to break down. It's also me having fun with what-ifs, with angst in relationships, with cool ideas with the Dark Side that I don't think normal Star Wars likes to touch.
AND THAT'S THE GIST OF IT.
I'm really slow at writing all of this in fic form proper, but I am glad I got around to putting everything down in an outline. I draw here or there too, anything that's creatively more my jam than writing just to get concepts out and formulate my ideas better.
BUT PLEASE--I always want to just talk more about it if anyone has any other specific questions or curiosities! And if anyone does want to read what I have gotten down so far, that's over HERE.

I miss Mary.. how is she doing?
part six Mary? it’s February, the guy she likes just told her that he wants to forget their steamy almost make out session and she thinks it’s all her fault, work is about to be slam packed, and the Daggers go on deployment in a little over four weeks so on top of everything else she has at work she’ll be busy preparing their planes. not to mention she’ll be helping Danielle and Kristina with the newest additions to their households while their husbands are gone. (also everyone welcome Baby Boy Lee! born February 10, 2021 at 5:17 PM he clocked in at a very healthy 7 lbs. 5.5 oz. and 22 inches. mom and baby are healthy and happily resting! dad did not pass out this time so he gets a gold star!) so miss ma’am is having a rough week, and she’s looking forward to having some fun at the club with her friends for that Valentine’s Day event Nat talked about in part five!
as for Mary in real time (aka July 2023 for her and us!) she’s about 3.5 months pregnant and she’s from New York so she suffering in that San Diego heat, baby. she’s gotten real lucky so far symptom wise! only had a tiny bit of morning sickness in the first trimester (but that split as soon as the fourth month started) and some swollen feet, but her doctor says that’s a combo of the heat and being on her feet all day so there’s nothing to worry about! thankfully Bradley is being the most doting man on the planet. he’s got the AC cranked, rubbing her lower back (twins are heavy! it’s twice the weight!) and getting her snackies whenever a craving hits.
speaking of Bradley he’s being an absolute menace when it comes to her belly. yes, she’s a plus-size girlie but with twins she popped early and you can definitely tell she’s pregnant already. (they actually had to announce it to the Daggers just a few days ago because some of them Nat and Bob were getting suspicious of how extra protective Bradley was being. everyone was so happy, it was very sweet. Mav cried. so did Harvard, but he’ll deny that if anyone asks.) Bradley is also like two seconds from supergluing himself to Mary so he doesn’t miss anything. when the babies start moving and kick he might actually try. Jake is coming up with a contingency plan for if he starts bulk buying gorilla glue.
it’s not quite time for them to find out what they’re having but they have been talking about names! they have a list going in a shared google doc and add ideas whenever they have them. (Reuben got ahold of the link somehow and when training got canceled due to rain, the Daggers spent an entire afternoon adding names. it was actually really sweet and Mary cried when she saw all of the suggestions. Bradley did too when he saw the note that said “Mav said didn’t have any ideas, he doesn’t care what you name them as long as he gets two healthy grandkids at the end of it.” to help him calm down (it’s an extra emotional time of the year with it almost being the anniversary of Goose’s passing) Mary played with his hair while he talked to her belly. they had the softest, most sweetest sex afterwards.)
so overall present day Mary is doing pretty good!

Hiya! What BL series would you recommend the most? So far, I've loved watching KinnPorsche (it's THE best!!), I Told Sunset about You, Cutie Pie & Bad Buddy. I also got into To My Star because of you, so cheers for that!

If a show gives me two out of four (since I will never allow a show to Killing Eve me again!), I'm going to fight random people AND their unborn kiddos in the street for it. Case & point:
HIStory 4: Close to You (2021, 10 episodes, Taiwan - 9/10) - I loved all of. Not some parts. Not only one of the couples. No! ALL. OF. IT! Every couple. Every situation. Including the stepbrothers relationship and the whole ridiculous top/bottom conversations. LOVED IT! It had the messy factor that others only aspire to achieve.
Taiwan has a tight hold on passionate men in sweatpants and a basic shirt down, and for that, I'm grateful!
Now that you know this is my floor, hopefully you understand that like my fave, Marie Kondo...
I was raised on telenovelas and soap operas, so if an evil twin kidnaps the protagonist then sleeps with him and has a child who is given up to an orphanage only to grow up and fall in love with his rich (unknown to him) brother and uses witchcraft to give the rival love interest amnesia, I'd be happily sitting every week to witness it with no qualms. Who am I to judge?! Makes sense to me!
Which means I don't LOVE some dramas even though they are great because my basic rules don't apply, the messiness is missing, or they will be too tough to rewatch:
Bad Buddy (7/10) because I wanted one of them to snap, crackle, and pop off at their parents for passing on generational trauma. Also, being in love with Bad Bunny yet trying to say this title was too difficult for my brain.
I Told Sunset About You (8/10) is rude and feels like a personal attack. You've seen it, so you know what I'm writing about. We don't speak about the sequel.
Semantic Error (9/10) hurt because anyone who has been in a group project knows the pain that the lead felt, yet it tried to convince us that he was in the wrong. Team No Group Assignment!
Cherry Magic's (8/10) second couple made me irrationally upset. Cats can bring people together, but these two? Really?! Cats are better than this street dancing moment!
Gameboys' (7/10) whole plot of the dad going out to look for the son and catching COVID was...yeah, no. And if the lead said "baby" ONE MORE TIME, I was going to make like a balloon in a toddler's hand and POP!
We Best Love 1 & 2 (8/10) gave us a five year time jump between the first and second part, and if it weren't for that *excellent* drunk moment, I would have stopped watching it and stored part two in the horrible-sequels-we-don't-speak-about pile.
But a man plotting from the age of ten to manipulate his whole family into accepting him sleeping with his stepbrother (HIStory 4 - 9/10), I fully support.
Therefore, you don't want what I'm peddling. Unless you do...

Manner of Death (2020, 14 episodes, Thailand - 7.5/10) - A story of two men trying to have sex while EVERYONE around them is being killed. Oh, and then there is a cactus and a baby murderer horribly fighting his feeling for the smartest/dumbest guy in the town.
KinnPorsche (2022, 14 episodes, Thailand - 8/10) - A story about a family that is determined to dickmatize the first person who is kind to them, which you already watched, so you know they succeed.
Eff the Police: Tend to have issues finishing, but always a fun ride *pun intended*.
Not Me (2022, 14 episodes, Thailand - 7.5/10) - Literally, eff the police...but also, figuratively.
HIStory 3: Trapped (2019, 10 episodes, Taiwan - 8/10) - If we can't avoid the cops, sleep with them, so at least we can have a good character witness.
Messy Bi: There will be tears. Lots and lots of tears.
Love Mechanics (2020 and remake in 2022, 4 episodes/10 episodes, Thailand - 7/10, remake 8/10) - Polyamory is the answer, but the characters refuse to share.
Hello, Stranger (2020, 8 episodes, Philippines - 7.5/10) - A jock decides flirting with a guy is easier than actually doing his portion of the group project. The movie sequel is not on this level.
Adulting is Hard: The angst is strong, but the chemistry is stronger.
To My Star (2021, 9 episodes, South Korea - 9.5/10) - When being a big star is too difficult, stop showing up for work, crash at someone else's house, and pop his pimples. To My Star 2 is not on this level but still brought the chemistry, so if you didn't watch, do it.
He's Coming To Me (2019, 8 episodes, Thailand - 8/10) - Life is hard, but the afterlife is harder, so pester a kid for a decade until he decides to solve murders. The way the main's sexuality is handled is perfect.
Vice Vers(a): The confessions are ALWAYS a 10!
Old Fashion Cupcake (2022, 5 episodes, Japan - 9.5/10) - When in love with a boss, walk a delicate line of being the best employee while letting him know exactly the eight ways you can blow hi...his mind...with your mo...monumental organization ski.. Oh eff it him!
My Beautiful Man (2021, 6 episodes, Japan - 9/10) - Just an ordinary man who wants to be loved and the guy who wants to worship him in every way possible.
DNA Says Love You (2022, 12 episodes, Taiwan - 8/10) - The audience knows the whole time what is happening, but has no idea what is actually happening. Is it a ghost story? Is it about a soul reincarnating? Is this about amnesia? Nope. Well, actually...yeah, still no.
I have a lot more, but this is already too long.
All in all, embrace what you like. If you like a certain aspect of show, latch on to it and explore others that showcase that particular plot device. Also, don't be ashamed of what you like. Even if others think it's lame, if you like it, then I love it. Believe me, if China had finished Addicted, there be a lot more people living in glass houses keeping quiet instead of judging us because some guys in the mafia actually do bad things.

Sarah: A New Bookseller Appears!!
I’ve been a reader for as long as I can remember. I have wonderful memories of visiting the old downtown Bellevue Library on Main Street, signing up for the annual summer reading program at the Eastgate KCLS branch, and running my fingers along the spines of books at the University Bookstore whenever my family ate out at the nearby Azteca restaurant. My mom almost always bought me the latest Baby Sitter’s Club or Sweet Valley Twins book. I was such a devoted reader that I used to force my friends to lounge under our family’s ping-pong table and listen to me read aloud some of my favorite novels, including Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, and Wendy and the Bullies. It was a surprise to no one when I became a 6th grade reading teacher and then an elementary librarian!
In late 2020, deciding I needed a break from education, I applied to the Master’s in Children’s Literature program at Simmons University, not knowing where it would lead me, but excited by the prospect of a grand adventure. In July of 2021 my husband, daughter, dog and I moved across the country to Newton, MA so I could study children’s literature and, while I am so grateful for everything I learned and all the fabulous people we met, I can’t wait to be back in the Pacific Northwest, especially because I’ll be working at Island Books! I have always wanted to work at an independent bookstore, so having an opportunity to grow the children’s department, connect readers with books, and meet even more people who are passionate about kidlit is beyond exciting.
I love all kinds of kids' books, from picture books to young adult novels, but I gravitate toward middle grade stories. I even produce the Happy Reading podcast, which spotlights middle grade books by topic. Some of my all-time favorite books include The Westing Game, the Vanderbeekers series, Boy Meets Boy, and Should I Share My Ice Cream? (an Elephant & Piggie book). Some more recent five-star reads include The Mona Lisa Vanishes, The First State of Being, The Color of Sound, and Dear Mr. G (I’m a sucker for picture books that make me cry).
When I’m not reading or browsing the shelves at my local library or bookstore, I also enjoy crocheting (I taught myself a few weeks ago and love it), baking, building with LEGO, planning our next Disney vacation, walking our adorable dog Jefferson, and watching movies with my family while snuggled up on the couch.
I can’t wait to start the next chapter of my life at Island Books!

what have been BLs that took you by surprise this year?
okay, this one is easy - Semantic error! since i don’t really keep up with all bls and don’t really know when they’re airing and awaits us in the upcoming year (yes, i am that basic hoe who finds out about most bls thanks to my lovely mutuals and people i follow - they fill my dash with delicious images and gifsets and i just get swept up and start watching too!) i was not expecting much from this since korean bls sometimes don’t capture me and their cinematography impresses me much more than the story but this time around i absolutely fell in love with Sangwoo and Jaeyoung (thanks to my lovely friends @bengiyo and @kyr-kun-chan - i wouldn’t watched it if it weren’t for them!)
plus Not me - because that show grew on me, managed to get me out of my deep Bad Buddy hyperfixation and i am not complaining! parts of the soundtrack even made it to my top 5 songs of the year, one being my most listened to... you can imagine what a grip that show had/has on me! the story was absolutely gripping and i applaud them for having at least 3 characters panting after a character played by Gun (yes, even Gram before his evil twin Kilo took his place and yes Todd too... no i won’t be explaining further!)
what have been BLs that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
To my star 2 - before you come for me with pitchforks, let me explain! i love Jiwoo and Seojoon so much but i was so hyped for the show to air that when it did and we got all that angst i was just - i didn’t expect that and i should have, especially after the last promos were uploaded right before the show aired. so it’s not even disappointment but more me expecting something different but then i got on board, because of course i did, i love them so much...
what has been your favorite BL this year?
a lot of you would expect me to say Bad Buddy - but i found a loophole and will say that the majority of bad buddy aired in 2021 so i count it as a 2021 show!!
i was not expecting KinnPorsche to have such a grip on me - i think i was the only person in the bl fandom who didn’t even know about KinnPorsche right until like a week before it aired (again, i am bad at keeping up with new releases and all that, don’t judge me)!
i also know a lot of people were hyped for it but lost interest quickly, some even came to hate it and i totally understand where they’re coming from, there are things in KinnPorsche that could have been fine-tuned, sure, but all in all this show gave me something i wasn’t used to in bls - 2 broad as fuck dudes not only being into each other and having sex a lot, actually showing their desire for each other but they also had so many tender moments which, again, i am not used to seeing with men like them? not just in bl in general, but a lot of the time, guys who look like Kinn and Porsche usually don’t have stories like the one they got (especially the romance) - it managed to be light-hearted in some moments, playful and hot in others and also downright tender and soft, they got to be sweet with each other, they were allowed to hold each other and love one another - plus the plot was something i actually enjoyed, there’s so much they could do with a second season if we get one, and the fandom experience here on tumblr was amazing!
i have not watched a lot of bls this year because my mental health went off the rails and it’s still not the best, but i am not at least watching some new shows... but kinnporsche took the crown for me personally this year, followed by Not me and Semantic error

Todd & Black (we all saw it, your mother saw it... they fucked before, they had that energy and it’s a hill i will die on)

if i am bad at bls and keeping up with them, then i am even worse with non-bl content...
i have a hard time connecting with shows so i either hyperfixate on something or i drop it before i even finish it...
i did enjoy the third and last season of Derry girls, cause i love them and i was sad that the show ended; i like the third season of The Umbrella Academy but season 2 will remain my favourite!
Young Royals and Heartstopper being the little gay shows i loved and adored and cherished too!
and recently i really enjoyed Wednesday on Netflix

Beautiful Night

TL;DR: city pop sang by a wet blanket

Overall Thoughts
I am deeply fascinated by what happens to kpop stars after they’re long past their prime. They don’t have the young boyish handsomeness anymore, they can’t do the crazy dances due to their cracking bones, and their fanbase is getting older and older. At the same time though, they do have some sort of fanbase, and you probably forced them into an indentured servitude style 20-year contract so they’re still your problem. What do you do?
In this category falls my birthday twin Yesung from Super Junior. A group that hit its height in 2008 and had an absurd number of members, SM entertainment still finds work for them in 2023 and the outcomes are mini albums like this one. I mentioned this with the EXO review, but I wonder if they get more input as they get older? Or is all choice an illusion? Do they at least get to choose the genre they get put into? Or is it chosen based on what they think the market will like?
I don’t know if Yesung himself had a hand in what this album sounds like, but I can tell you that they did not take his voice into account whatsoever when writing these songs. All of these songs are actually really good, a mix of city pop and washed-up Eurovision star that works really well. What doesn’t work well is his voice sounding breathy, being forced into a falsetto and with so much emotion he sounds like he’s gonna cry sometimes. Something I do not want to hear when there is a funky bass and 80s style sax solo in the background. I just need to know whose idea this was.
It’s almost funny how out of place the vocal style is. “Beautiful Night” is the best track on here and I would be dancing along the whole time if he didn’t sound like his family died in a house fire the night before and he was forced up on stage for karaoke. “Phantom Pain” and “Like Us” are both chill songs that sound a little better because a smile is optional, but hearing animal crossing upbeat instrumentals mixed with a breathy falsetto just makes me uncomfortable. Don’t worry though, there are luckily a few songs on this album where he was allowed to be sad like “Lost Heart” (a confused piece that goes on for FOUR AND A HALF MINUTES), “No More Love,” and “A Letter in The Wind.” The last two are actually not bad, and while I hate ballads they were a relief because his voice felt at home. You could clearly tell he was more comfortable singing these songs, and the sadness in his voice was for a reason (unlike in “Firework” which would have been a great city pop song if he wasn’t singing it).
I thought while writing this that maybe the problem is that he has a bad voice. It’s breathy, frustratingly sad, always stuck in a falsetto, and so weak that it could be overpowered by animal crossing sounds. Honestly though, I think these are all traits that would do him well in singing ballads, and the last song on the album shows that “A Letter in The Wind.” Why you are wasting absolutely incredible driving baselines, synth parts, guitar and sax solos, and city pop inspired masterpieces on him is beyond me.

I know the LS timeline is a very complicated matter but maybe you have some ideas of how much time has passed since the show started and especially since the end of S2.
We know that TK was 1 year sober in 2x08 so that would mean a year has passed between the beginning of 1x01 and 2x08. Then in the end of S2 Charles dies, and recently with the twins birthday party we have Tommy saying it is their first birthday without their dad. So Charles death is less than a year ago at that point.
How much time do you think passes between the end of S2 and the beginning of S3?
Now in 3x15 we have Charlie walking already. She must be walking pretty early since there's never been a birthday party or even the mention of a birthday so it's safe to assume she's not one year old yet. Which may put her at around 10-11 months old i suppose, which would be the amount of time that has passed since 3x04 when she was born. But that just seems completely incorrect if Charles has also been dead for less than a year according to the fact that its the twins first birthday without him.
Any ideas of what the timeline SHOULD be like if it wasn't so jumbled? Lol
You know, Nonny, I have been saving your ask for awhile, because I really wanted to do this ask justice, with like thought, and care, and a long meta, and then on Monday, Tommy sits in front of Charles's grave and the date of his passing is April 27, 2021 and she tells him it's been a YEAR.
And I...nonny...I know they went from like May to January in the first minutes of 3x01, so I take that to be the general timespan between Owen punching Billy and where we wake up... maybe a week tops from the opening scene of 3x01.
BUT THIS MONDAY NIGHT NONSENSE...you mean to tell me it's only been FOUR MONTHS since the ICE STORM.

Charlie Ryder is holding her head up, has teeth and is walking. WALKING. That takes 10 months to a year to start first steps...and that's on the early side.
Beyond that, the idea that TK went from falling into the ice to his mom dying to having Sadie attack him in a span of four months...I...HOW DOES HE FUNCTION AS A HUMAN BEING? HOW... HES A GODDAMN MIRACLE
If we were being sensable people it's been a year since the ice storm... and it's January again. But the episode is titled Spring Cleaning...so...
Time doesn't actually exist in Lone Star verse. It's like being the Doctor, okay, or living in Schitt's Creek where it's always summer unless it's Christmas. Some show runners and writers rooms cannot math and it really fucking shows.
The timeline is whatever y'all want it to be. I will never read a fic in this fandom (or Schitt's Creek, or Doctor Who) and think "that timeline doesn't make sense" because I promise you every fic writer in this fandom as put more thought into the timeline than the writers room ever has. Which is not me shitting on the writer's room, it's just acknowledging that not everybody carefully marks out time like we obsessive people do.

um . . . i don't know how wild this is, but one of my more obscure headcanons, i should say, might be that like. joo won fucking sucks at card games, especially mao. (which is a ridiculously fun card game, but i can imagine joo won hating it. the poor guy will do something, and dong sik will give him an extra card with an obscure penalty description.

🎬 If a movie or show were based on your fic, which fic would you choose and who would you fancast?
hm, i've def thought that last ones out would make an interesting film/short film of a kind. i'd definitely keep the original cast of beyond evil, but as for whoever would play mi yeon . . . not really sure, but i did see han so hee whip out a baton in my name (2021), and ever since then, i've been thinking "omg she's twinning with joo won :)" and i think it'd be neat if she played a grown version of mi yeon.
💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing?
mm, that writing for yourself is the most important and most sustainable way to keep yourself from getting burned out. i'll admit that i sometimes have moments of self-doubt and annoyance about like. how i think fandom culture has very drastically changed since i was writing fic. (tiktok is a scourge on society and i think it's personally responsible for making people unable to just enjoy slower forms of storytelling.)
so like, teaching myself to really try to get away from all the noise and get swept in "what's popular / what's not / what'll get me the most kudos, hits, attention, likability / what'll make people want to keep reading what i write" has been a hard but freeing lesson to teach myself.
actually, just in the last few weeks, i found myself kind of. burnt out from writing fic in general? i think it might have been a mix of just my personal life + academics really taking a toll on my creativity, but i think i also found myself really craving external validation through ficwriting as well--and when i realized that was starting to spiral somewhere, i sort of closed myself off for a bit and?? weirdly?? found myself writing some more of my original works instead, and what was so great about that was that it was fun and freeing and just? giving myself space to explore what i want to write and what interests me alone gave me a lot more energy to get excited about writing again.
i feel like i've learned a variation of this lesson a million times lmao, but like! i'm always a little bit in awe of how no matter the number of times i come across this realization, it always makes me fall in love with writing just a little bit more.

oh . . . maybe the very last scene in in my breath again.

and of course, there are a good handful of others who i just. always kind of. hold onto their comments very dear, just because sentimental reasons haha

My Review of Kakegurui
How did I get into this anime? I was curious about this particular title for quite some time. There aren’t really that many anime titles where the main premise is about gambling and even when one exists, the anime itself stinks.
Hyakkaou Private Academy is the home to the rich and powerful’s offspring. Basically, the entire school is filled with recipients of the lucky sperm club. On the surface, the school seems to be doing its job of teaching these kids the real world. But once classes are over, everyone gambles. Take your pick of the games! Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you go broke, and sometimes you become someone’s pet bitch. The student council has a system in place where if someone falls into debt due to gambling, they become ‘house pets’. The boys are known as ‘fidos’ and the girls are known as ‘mittens’. If they become a house pet, they must wear a tag around their neck and get harassed by classmates.
Ryouta Suzui is one such unlucky mongrel as he found himself falling to Mary Saotome. Mary is pretty handy when it comes to gambling and has crumbled several unlucky students. Enter Yumeko Jabami! She’s the newest transfer student to Hyakkaou and to Mary, an easy target to take advantage of. Unfortunately for Mary, she’s going to learn the hard way in a game of “fuck around and find out”. Yumeko is loving these games, but she loves figuring out the cheaters of the game even more.
Who’s bluffing? Poker face or kill face?! Who will win? Who will lose? Enter the rabbit hole to find out.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB…AND THE OTHER DUB: So, things started off turbulent as this anime was in Netflix jail. Only recently has Netflix decided to give the U.S. audience some anime on a week-by-week basis. ONLY SOME ANIME! But seeing as this came out in 2017, unless you were living in Japan or had a VPN, you were shit outta luck to seeing this. But it eventually got released to U.S. Netflix with several languages available. Not only that but the live action Kakegurui is also on Netflix, as well as recent spin-off Kakegurui Twin. So, Netflix has total control over the Kakegurui franchise. End of story, right?
As of 2021, Sentai Filmworks licensed Kakegurui. Not a big surprise as Sentai has decided to pick up several animes that were exclusive to sites like Amazon, Crunchyroll, and Netflix. But then Sentai decided to give Kakegurui a dub. Replace the L.A. based voices with the ones in Houston. I’m not sure what and why all of this is happening and why it’s absolutely necessary to have two English dubs when one dub was recorded not too long ago. The only other time I see this happen is with Dragon Ball and whenever Animax grabs a title. Was this payback from when Netflix redubbed Neon Genesis Evangelion? I know Sentai has nothing to do with Evangelion, but most of the people of that company do. Here’s my opinion on the matter. I prefer the Netflix dub for Kakegurui. Also, the Netflix dub to Evangelion sucks eggs and should be wiped from this Earth. Moving on!
What’s really weird about this is that if you go to Hidive’s website, they don’t even have a page for Kakegurui. I guess they just have the rights to put it out on blu-ray and not the right to stream it. Here are the voice actors, yo!

SHIPPING: Oh, there are a lot of ships that people flock to with this series. But aside from seeing all the obvious lesbianism going down at the student council, we do see obvious stuff when it comes to Itsuki’s feelings for Kaede. Other than that, some might point to the words exchanged between Ryouta and Yumeko in the season one finale. But there’s one thing everyone should know while watching this anime. The only ship that matters here is Any Character x Gambling.
Ryouta has no chance of satisfying Yumeko unless he can bring the heat in a game. The way I see it, unless Ryouta makes Yumeko moist down there in a game, it’s not gonna happen. We only saw it once, so it’s not off the table.
In season two, we did see a bit of unrequited love. It’s been clear from her debut that Kirari’s secretary Sayaka loves her. Imagine that, a lesbian named Sayaka! Never saw that before, hahaha! Kirari did say some things to Sayaka that could be taken as a dismissal. But then we get the scene where Sayaka loses a game and has to jump from a building and Kirari jumps off with her. I don’t know if it’s love or just bitches being crazy.
And as for Kakegurui Twin, Mary Saotome has a childhood friend named Tsuzura. Ever since Mary transferred to this school, Tsuzura has been hanging with Mary. Not just that, but sees Mary as her prince. And yes, her imagination goes that far, wedding dress and all. That’s great and everything but what the hell happened to Tsuzura in the main series? If she loves Mary Saotome so much, where the hell was she in those 24 episodes?
CAN’T READ MY, CAN’T READ MY…: Let’s talk about the kill faces. Everyone has one! Even the men! But in this anime, the kill face is majority a women’s sport. Let’s face it, the majority of this anime is focused on the women and how many kill faces one can make in the span of a 22-minute episode. Usually, we’ll see this when the random character feels cocky or whenever Yumeko catches them cheating or lying.
Seriously though, the only face that scares me is whenever Yumeko gets angry when Midari does something to anger her. Out of all the scary faces I see in this anime, Yumeko’s displeasure of being with Midari is the one that scares me the most. Yumeko is actually nicer to the characters who literally poisoned her than she is to Midari.
ENDING TO SEASON ONE: It’s been pretty clear that the student council has been running this show from day one. President Kirari put in the system of “fidos” and “mittens” for those who are in debt from gambling. Not only that, but draws up “life plans” for those poor souls. These life plans are pretty much what they sound like; to force the debtor to give up any dreams of their own in place of what the student council has written out for you. Mary was not down with that and slowly crawled her way out of debt. But we’ve got other shit going down from the inside. There seems to be a traitor in the student council.
Yumeko has had her fair share of run-ins with members of the student council with different outcomes. Yumeko defeated Itsuki (the chick who likes taking off people’s fingernails) and Itsuki in return was dropped from student council. Yuriko however defeated Yumeko and that caused Yumeko to temporarily become a house pet. And then the battle between Yumeko and Midari (the eyepatch chick with a death wish) ended with Yumeko as the victor. And then Yumeko took out Yumemi! But that last one revealed someone who was plotting Yumemi’s downfall and that was the student council treasurer, Kaede.
Kaede is a cold, calculating, blunt man. And if I might add, perfect casting choice for Tomokazu Sugita! Good on you, Japan! More so, he’s one of a few characters that didn’t expose numerous “kill faces” when up against Yumeko. And I gotta say, quite refreshing to see more male characters. I love the heavy lesbianism as much as the next girl, but mix it up sometimes! Kaede had high ambitions of becoming student council president and was willing to screw anybody over to get there. So, will he be able to take Yumeko down in a match? Nah! Kaede embarrassed himself in front of a large crowd that included Yumemi’s fan club, the entire student council, and even the president. Kaede was then stripped of his title, went into a hysterical coma, and his hair went all Marie Antoinette.
Moving away from that drama, Yumeko is about to go face-to-face with the president of the student council, Kirari. Both girls are intimidating and have an unbelievable love for gambling. The stakes for this game are pretty dire as if either girl loses, they must drop out of the school, never to return. Long story short, it was a tie so neither girl has to leave. We learn a few things about these characters in this episode, however that’s not the important part for the shipping community. For the shippers, some clever wordage was tossed around that could give us a dropped hint for Yumeko x Ryouta. I think Yumeko and Ryouta’s words in the final episode were meant differently from what we’re all thinking. On another note, I’m not sure if it was Kirari playing or if it was her doppelganger vice president.
In the final couple of minutes of season one, Itsuki nurses Kaede (who is still in his hysterical coma). Kirari disbands the student council. And Yumeko is still gambling for the sheer thrill of it.
SEASON TWO: As I said before, Kirari is disbanding the student council. Add to that, she’s making the next student council election a big gambling event. The one with the most chips at the end of the month becomes the next student council president. Not just that, but the winner also becomes the head of the Momobami clan. Kirari was the head of the clan and her stepping down from that position has brought out 11 members of the clan to transfer to the school and compete for that honor. Each one of these 11 members all have last names that end with ‘bami’. Interestingly enough, Yumeko’s last name also ends with ‘bami’, but as for her being related to any of these people is shrouded in mystery. Yumeko’s family and everything about her is an enigma. We know that she has an older sister that’s in a hospital of some sort and that Yumeko literally has an unlimited amount of money at her disposal.
As one would expect, Yumeko is going to take part of these challenges. Many want Yumeko to become the next president, but all Yumeko wants is to gamble. Others have invested their time with other competitors like Mary Saotome and several of the random Momobami clan members. And because she can’t pass up a good game, Kirari is also competing to stay president. I don’t get it if she’s the one that disbanded the student council and started this whole melee election. Whatever! Crazy bitches be crazy bitches!
ENDING: Yumeko has had some life-or-death challenges this season. This doesn’t scare her; in fact, she gets a kick when the stakes are ultimately high and the scent of death reeks. Unless Midari is involved, but that’s to be expected, she’s annoying. Nevertheless, Yumeko did go through a lot of frightening moments including being poisoned, almost gambled away a pinky finger, and playing a game where the loser would have to plunge to their death. Yumeko has made it through all of that and thensome. Although, the poisoning was pretty gnarly, girl almost died there. When it comes to the election, Kirari is still in the lead as she holds the most vote coins. Yumeko, Mary, and Ryouta wind up in the top 10. But no one can really come close to Kirari. Seriously girl, what was the point of all this?
But those Bami members are determined to take down Kirari by any means necessary. Terano might seem like the big kingpin of this gang of Bami members. She is in second place after all and was behind some of the bouts Yumeko faced including this tax game she played alongside Kaede and Itsuki. But what does that old saying go, never trust a pretty face or something like that? Rei, the one who has been seen as just a moderator at most instances showed their true colors in the season two finale during an auction for vote chips. Rei wants revenge against the Momobami family and will happily see to Kirari’s downfall. Call it a lifetime of putting up a façade and being a servant to the clan.
I was kinda surprised Rei was really biologically female. I say ‘kinda’ because Romi Park voiced her. So I had a small feeling that was the case.
Anyways, Yumeko in her oh-so-delicious fashion managed to take down Rei and then doing an ultimate gamble. I honestly don’t know what could possibly surpass all the gambles that were life-or-death. Yumeko nearly risked her life in several gambles, including almost dying from being poisoned. But I guess this time it was for the Jabami name. Regardless of all the turmoil, Yumeko wound up victorious, Rei dresses like a girl for once, Yumeko nearly loses all of her vote chip winnings from the game against Rei, and there’s no real conclusion to who’s going to run the student council.
Okay, so…I thought the first season was pretty solid and left an opportunity for a second season with the student council shake-up. But then season two kinda fell flat with the introduction of all the ‘bami’ clan members. Maybe the Mary Saotome spin-off will clear things up! Five years after the main anime ends, Netflix drops the Mary Saotome spin-off. Now will this clear up all the weird things surrounding her involvement with the mysterious vice president? I’m gonna spoil it right here and say, no. There are only 6 episodes and most of them revolve around Mary and a bunch of characters we don’t see in the main series.
TWIN: Much like Yumeko, Mary was also a transfer student. And also like Yumeko, her high school debut captured the attention of many as Mary caught wise to what the other students were dishing out in terms of games. But Mary was scouted by different people. Some wanted her to join certain clubs. Others wanted her to become a student council member. And then there are those who are putting their faith in Mary to take down the student council’s barbaric system of ‘fidos’ and ‘mittens’. Seeing as that system was thriving one year later, it looks like that Mary wasn’t able to put a fork in it. But nice try with the resistance, guys!
There’s only six episodes. There are a few new characters that we never see in the original anime. Most of these characters are definitely not third years on the verge of graduating. So why haven’t we seen these people before? Are we going to get more episodes in the future? Is the manga adaptation still in publication? We still haven’t seen what happens to Midari’s eye. I mean, we know what happens, but we just haven’t gotten the gory viewing. And what happened to Tsuzura? She loves Mary! Did she graduate early, get killed by the student council, commit suicide for Mary’s adoration, transfer schools, get slapped with one of those student council life plans that went into effect immediately, what!? I’d believe the third option myself. Something has to account for not seeing her in the main series.
Kakegurui has been very entertaining. And even the spin-off with Mary was interesting. I’m hoping for another batch of episodes in the future. Again, only the first season had my attention. The second kinda bored me with the student council election. Maybe it was the addition of all those clan members or the fact that I expected more from certain characters. As far as having an anime revolve around gambling, it wasn’t all bad. It could have been worse. There has been worse from what I’ve seen. Maybe in the future, I’ll check out the Kaiji series as I heard that had to do with gambling. Maybe another day once I finish the romcom I replaced Kakegurui with.
In the meantime, if you want to check out Kakegurui, Netflix has every episode available for streaming. This includes the first season, second season, the Twin spin-off, and I think there’s even a live-action Kakegurui on the platform. However, Sentai Filmworks released the first 2 seasons on blu-ray. Just remember that there’s a different English dub than what Netflix gave.
