Cancel Culture

Cancel culture is not about accountability, it is about tearing someone else down for your own entertainment, ultimately the majority of individuals that engage in cancel culture are the target audience for the celebrities they once worshipped/put on a pedestal and have now “cancelled”, anyone with real substance or a brain has better things to be doing than sitting behind a screen and negatively impacting the mental health of someone with a platform who they know nothing about other than what said person puts out for the public to know, it’s one thing to support an artist/celebrity etc. but it’s another to invest so much of your time and energy into people who essentially do NOT know of your existence and then to act surprised when they are not who you thought they were, the ones who created and regularly partake in cancel culture are the same people who worship a celebrity based on an idea they have of someone they only know through a screen, plus most of the time “cancelling” someone doesn’t even work and whoever was “cancelled” a few weeks ago is soon forgotten when a brand new controversy about someone else is born, if you don’t agree/like someone in the spotlight just unfollow them..it’s that simple.

I think SKZ are very talented and I appreciate and respect how involved they are in their career and artistic development. There was a time, it peaked in 2020, when they were definitely my bias group. Everything was just excellent and hit all the right spots for me.

2021-SKZ isn't really my thing but I do still keep tabs on them and their career. I'm not sure I enjoy the direction they want to go in but I guess a lot of groups want to try new things, it would be boring if they did the same stuff all the time and didn't challenge themselves, even if it's a bit of a failure.

Hyunjin has the presence and gravity of four people. I do need good music to sustain me but as a person, from an entertainment point of view, he's always been more than enough.

So, TLDR: I like Stray Kids but I love Hyunjin.

Apparently they DO put a gun to his head in the form of monopolizing what he sees in the form of strategic planning on their part. I make no reservations about stating my dislike of that particular branch of fans publicly. You’re right though. He DOESN’T see anything from other accounts BECAUSE they strategically circle-jerk each other until they’re noticed. Apparently Voldemort is even offering tips to people on how to get noticed! How humble! 

There are actually INCREDIBLE artists in the fandom who absolutely deserve to be noticed. We’re not talking some shitty edit someone did in five minutes on their phone. It’s infuriating to see real artists get ignored in favor of the same 10 people who are just clout chasers. What’s worse is these people feel they CAN’T speak out and when they do, they get shit talked first and THEN “supported” publicly by the hive mind. I’ve literally seen it firsthand. The Quiet Fans ARE the real fandom and deserve a fair chance to be seen and heard.

I tend to shy from twitterstan and stan in general...I just kinda support artists and writers and such. But NCT 127 released their rad NEO ZONE and an artist I support was saying there was backlash against Taeyong and his body in the video KICK IT. Heartbreaking. What are your thoughts on WHY fans (these were nctzens) feel they should voice such hard views on idols bodies. Personally, his body is beautiful to me. It suits him. Not one body is the same. His is his. You know?

First off, I don’t do twitter. If that’s what people enjoy, then cool for them, but when I was heavily into following closely to kpop/ trends/ news / fan culture etc, I was on twitter. And I naturally followed a lot of got7 accounts and left twitter because I couldn’t handle how vulgar stan culture is over there. I was certain that 95% of stans over there see Jackson as a nice slab of meat that they can do xyz to - and the same now goes for many other idols too. I’m sure for some people there are pockets of reason to remain in that scene. For me, it’s too toxic and full of a LOT of hate. So it doesn’t surprise me (still saddens me) that this body shaming over Taeyong is a thing. 

Taeyong is pretty confident in himself as a performer. Gosh, he has to be to pull off some of the things he’s done as a center in the groups he’s a member of! This isn’t his first body-showing rodeo, if you get me. In Baby, Don’t Stop, he was shirtless with Ten, in Highway to Heaven’s MV he barelyyyyy was covered in that white shirt. I know there’s other instances too.  

So why is his body under spotlight now? I think it’s because in comparison to Johnny, who is also shirtless, that people are doing what most humans naturally do and look at what’s on display and point out the flaws of one whilst praising the other. Whilst that is natural behaviour, there is a fine line to it turning incredibly toxic in my opinion. We do this at a base level for things we see around us, ie if we’re at the mall and see two things to compare… we’re not going to go up to that person/product and openly tell them all that we thought, now are we? This doesn’t make us a saint for judging something but accepting that all people do it is important. 

However, for celebrities, people think because they are put up in front of us on a regular basis, further, especially people who have paid money into their careers like musicians, that they can hold an opinion and voice it in a way that is toxic and get away with it. Why? Oh, because that idol put themselves there in the first place! They should know it’s part of the package.

NO! It’s really not! They are still human at the end of the day. That is still their body and what they choose to do with it or not, isn’t yours to control. You can dislike it - like me, I don’t appreciate seeing shirtless idols these days. More and more are turning to this gimmick. I think it’s a cheap tactic in trying to get people to buy their music or pay more attention when they’re already SO TALENTED. Or you can love it… but still, dragging someone down for how they look is so god damn disappointing.

It doesn’t make you a fan at all. If you loved someone, you could never think like that or act like that. And if you don’t like one member but do like the others, then you’re thinking ill of someone they care about… there’s nothing supportive about this at all. The internet easily gives anonymity to these reactions. They are people who feel capable of spreading hate because the internet is full of it. There’s a learned culture for hating on celebrities (or people you don’t know in person even) all around the world and hardly any consequence from doing so and thus it continues like it’s no big deal.

I bet 98% of those speaking up would never say a damn word in person. 

I also happen to think Taeyong suits his body. That’s how he was put together and sure, I bet even he has insecurities he would like to improve on! Doesn’t give us the right to be the ones to tell him what to change first.
