IT’S MY TWO YEAR GIF-IVERSARY!!!

hi friends! the end of this month (May 28, 2021) marks the two year anniversary of the first gifset i ever made! i have grown and progressed tremendously in my editing skills over the past two years, and i love expressing my creativity with gifs!

since last year’s celebration was so fun and connected me with so many incredible gif makers on this site, i am super excited to celebrate again this year! i am commemorating a personal milestone, but the overall goal of this celebration is to recognize, uplift, and inspire gif makers to love themselves and their art! absolutely anyone is welcome to join in, whether you’ve been giffing for a million years or just started yesterday.

Oh gosh, I think I started around 2011 so I really can’t remember. I never really stopped but I had some kind of renaissance last summer, in july and I owe that to all the amazing creators in the Umbrella Academy fandom.

I’m not really a fan of pale or bw gifs, I live and breathe colors but! @ciriofcintras is the only one I follow who edits  like that and the only one I need because everything she makes is amazing, neat, and sharp. Well, too many to count I think. If we’re mutuals, there’s a good 90% chance that’s because you’re gifmaker too and we share fandoms! To name a few, @number5theboy you already know I’m ride or die for lizzie but the thoughtfulness she puts in each gifset makes it extra special! @andyoudoctor myra is constantly improving and dishing out amazing content

becca @inejz-ghafa engy @alina-mal and ava @anya-chalotra are my go to for this particular type of inspiration! their careful placements and gradient and font work is always lovely, you can feel the effort behind it. typhography is the thing i waste more time on when i gif so i can really appreciate their art!

again, i won’t ever deny the huge impact @anya-chalotra had on my current style. i try not to go with the exact type of edits of other gifmakers, unless it’s a particularly popular trend that doesn’t involve a particular attention to composition both out of respect and because i like to experiment on my own. but that’s exactly what ava pushed me to do, her edits showed me how much potential photoshop had that i wasn’t really exploiting so i got down to learn more about it! she remains my # editing goals for sure ♥

It's my babies' Wreck- iversary (ooh, did I just make up a word?) and I can't handle it man

It's been 7 YEARS!

Even though it's technically still 6 for me

But jeez do I feel old!😭

This movie came out when I was 11- an actual BABY.

And now I'm a few weeks from being an actual ADULT.

And I, uh honestly didn't think I'd still be here.

But I was a fool to think that. Because hyperfixations never really die.

You guys probably all have deep emotional stories about how you came to love WIR, but mine is pretty boring, honestly.

I saw the trailers and stuff, but as a kid I had no interest whatsoever in video games, much less a movie about them. I didn't want to see it.

And sometimes I wonder what things would be like if I hadn't.

BORING. Things would be BORING.

So oddly enough, I have my mom to thank. If she hadn't happened to rent it at redbox, I probably still wouldn't have seen it.

But at this point dumb me still didn't really care.

And I didn't end up watching it.

And it became overdue.

And my mom asked if I wanted to watch it before she returned it.

And I said no.

But she didn't end up taking it back that day for some reason.

So I decided to watch it.

How bad could it be?

And, uh, I think you can figure out what happened from there.

I definitely didn't laugh at Hero's Doody like the little kid I was.

I tried to put the gif here but Tumblr hates me

And I DEFINITELY didn't cry when Ralph wrecked Vanellope's kart.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Because I've never cried at any movie EVER

And I totally didn't see the twist with Turbo coming (that's not sarcasm, I really didn't)

And if you think I just watched it once, you are sorely mistaken. That poor disc was starting to get scratched up by the time I was done with it.

But something happened that first time I watched it.

And you can call me dramatic for identifying so much with a movie, it wouldn't be the first time

I had never seen a movie like that before.

And I'd never felt so much for two characters before.

And I'd never realized that I was SO much like them.

I guess I might've been kinda dense as a kid, heh

Because I didn't realize until then that I was being treated a lot like Ralph and Vanellope.

Maybe the people in my life weren't as outright mean.

But I was a bit of an outcast in my own right.

I didn't really fit in anywhere.

And now I suppose that was probably my social differences. But I didn't know I was on the spectrum back then.

And it was probably also my hyperfixation with Rugrats I'd had since I was like three, which by my tween years was considered extremely babyish

Oh my gosh did I accidentally make a pun

I still love Rugrats now, because like I said, hyperfixations never die- which probably seems even weirder now that I'm an adult😂

But this isn't about that.

Wreck-it Ralph helped me realize something important about myself that, I don't know, maybe I still wouldn't have found out if I hadn't seen it

And I've found new friends through it, people who don't make fun of me for the "childish" things I love.

And it sounds pretty weird, but I'm sure you guys will understand.

But these characters became my friends.

I love Wreck-it Ralph.

It's made such an impact on my life and helped me learn more about myself.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Steve Rogers x Reader

Summary: You patch things up with Steve, but will Laurie take you back?

Word Count: 1300

Warnings: Language, fluff, angst.

A/N: Well, this is not my best, but I still like this one. Hope you guys do too! Also, not my gif. Credit to the owner. You know the drill.

He answered after one ring. “Hello?” God, you missed his voice. 

“Steve,” you breathed, tears still streaming down your face. It was like a dam had broken and now your eyes were flooded. Your voice was shaking, and you had to speak quietly so you wouldn’t cry anymore. “It’s me.”

It was quiet on his end for a moment or two, and then you heard him sigh. Was he relieved? “Thank God.” He said breathlessly, and you could almost picture him running his hands through his hair. 

“And you’re sure?” Steve asked for about the thousandth time.

“Yes,” You insisted, grabbing his hands. You stood in your living room, by the front door. As soon as Steve had walked in you had rushed over to him. “Yes, I’m sure. It’ll be hard, but I’d rather see you a little bit at a time then not at all.” You laced your fingers together with his. 

He grinned slowly, his eyes nearly sparkling as he looked down at you. You could almost hear the ocean when you looked in his eyes. “Okay?” you said after he didn’t say anything, squeezing his hands gently to make sure he was still alive. 

“Okay,” he chuckled, bending down slightly to kiss you. You helped him fill the space by standing just slightly on your toes, your lips meeting in the middle. God, I missed this, you thought, moving your lips against his. Soon his hands let go of yours and traveled to your waist, pulling you closer. You reached up and wrapped your arms around his neck, not opening your eyes or breaking the connection between him for one second. He lifted you up off the ground and spun you around for a second, causing you to giggle into his mouth. 

Finally he set you down, and you parted, grinning at him with slightly flushed cheeks. “I missed you so much,” you said, pulling him more into your apartment.

“I missed you too, doll,” he replied, chuckling. “I thought about coming into the store a few times, and buying a phone case again. But I figured you would need your space.”

You smiled as you remembered the first time you had met him. You just knew him as Captain America then, this man who fought to protect the world and had been frozen for like, a hundred years (not a hundred, but you didn’t know the exact number). But now, you knew him as Steve, this kind, wonderful, amazing man who swept you off your feet and made you feel so happy, and safe, and invincible. 

You spent the night holed up in your apartment with Steve, catching up on the last month you’d missed with him. He told you what he could about all the missions he’d been on, and shared a few stories of being recognized in public. You told him about your fight with Laurie, and how you felt so guilty about leaving things the way they were with her. 

“Well, then, you have to talk to her,” Steve said. You were sitting on the couch with him now, talking. He reached over and brushed your hair behind your ears. “You guys have been friends too long just to let it fizzle out like that.”

You thought it was sweet how much he cared, and moved so that you weren’t facing him anymore; instead, your back was pressed against his chest, legs extending across the couch. He pressed a kiss against the top of your head and you could feel his chest rising and falling- steady and sure. 

“You’re probably right,” you sighed, closing your eyes. He ran his fingers through your hair. “Tomorrow,” you promised, letting out a yawn. “I’ll talk to her tomorrow.”

You stood in front of Laurie’s apartment, an olive branch in hand. Not an actual olive branch, but a peace offering of sorts. It was a plastic bag full of Laurie’s favorite candy and makeup from work. You glanced down at your phone. A text from Steve helped you work up the courage to knock.

You can do this, doll. Just talk to her.

You took in a deep breath, and, with your free hand, knocked on the door. 

After a few moments, Laurie answered. She frowned when she saw it was you, and just stood there. She didn’t say anything, just stared at you with her arms crossed over her chest. You swallowed the lump in your throat. 

“I, uh, I brought you this,” you said, handing her the bag. She glanced down in to it and, after moments of consideration, allowed you to come inside. 

“I’m sorry I was such an asshole,” you spoke again, biting your lip. “I shouldn’t have taken all my frustrations with Steve out on you, and I shouldn’t have said what I did. I was being a bad friend, and you were being a good friend by calling me out on my bullshit.”

You sighed. You’d said your piece, and now all you had to do was wait for Laurie to forgive you... or decide she never wanted to see you again. 

After minutes- literally, minutes- of agonizing silence, Laurie rolled her eyes. “You swear you’re done acting like a lunatic?” she asked, looking at you. 

“Yes,” you said, smiling softly. “Yes. Lunacy over. They’ve released me from the asylum.”

“Well, then, get over here, you dumb-ass,” Laurie said, opening her arms. You stepped forward and hugged your best friend, feeling all the pieces finally fall into place. 

After the hug, you and Laurie spent the evening watching your favorite movies, quoting the lines you knew so well. She ordered Thai food and pizza and you pigged out with her on food you didn’t need, but damn did it taste good. You split a bottle of wine with her and sang stupid songs at the top of your lungs, and you were so happy to have your best friend back. 

The next day, you met with Steve at the grocery store. He only had an hour to spare today to see you, and you had to go shopping for the week before you went to work. You spotted the faded blue baseball cap and knew it was him. 

Holding the basket in one hand and Steve’s hand in the other, the two of you walked down the aisles and you occasionally would toss something in the basket. You held a conversation with your boyfriend, talking to him about stuff that didn’t really matter. Then finally, as you approached the produce section, he brought up something that did matter.

“So, Stark- Tony, I mean - is hosting this big, stupid party to celebrate the Avengers being together for three years,” he said, and you chuckled to yourself. “What?” He asked, nudging you with his shoulder.

“That’s so sweet,” you said, grabbing an apple and putting it in the basket. “It’s like an anniversary party. An Aveng-iversary.” You laughed, because you thought you were hilarious.

Steve didn’t. He just shook his head and rolled his eyes. “You are insane,” he said, scoffing at you lightly. “But as I was saying, he’s having this big party, and he told us we could invite whoever we want. And I want you.” He stopped, then scrunched his face slightly. “To be there. I want you to come with me. It’s next Saturday. Can you make it?”

You thought of the work schedule and after a moment or two, nodded. “Yeah, I can make it,” You said, grinning. 

“Good,” He said, kissing the side of your head. “Cause my coworkers can’t wait to meet you.”

“Coworkers?” You scoffed. “You mean, the rest of the Avengers?”

Steve nodded, and it dawned on you. A night meeting the rest of the Avengers? Holy shit. You were in trouble.

7 DAY GIF LOVE CHALLENGE (May 10th-16th)

hi everyone! in celebration of my two year gif-iversary, i want to challenge everyone to spread some love and positivity to their favorite gif makers on this site! tumblr wouldn’t be what it is without gifs, and the incredible people who make them often go unrecognized for their creativity, skill, time, and effort. so here’s a week where we can all come together to show our appreciation for the amazing editors out there! please REBLOG this post to spread the word, so we can fill this site with love and support!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

anyone can join in, regardless of whether they are a creator or not. just follow these steps:

STEP 1: think of some gif makers on this site that you appreciate. pick people who inspire you, whose edits make you smile, whose content makes this site better. anyone you think deserves some love!

STEP 2: each day of the week, send at least one ask to at least one gif maker telling them why you love their creations. it could be as simple as “i love your vibrant coloring style!” or as complex as a college essay breaking down every single awesome thing about their gifs. any message is good, as long as it comes from your heart! (and if you’re really stumped on how to start, there are some message templates below)

STEP 3: after you’ve sent someone an ask telling them why you appreciate their gifs, reblog at least three of their gifsets and give them a few compliments in the tags! again, you can write an essay here or just keysmash enthusiastically, it’s all up to you!

and that’s all you have to do to participate! content creators love getting nice messages about their work, and reblogs with nice tags encourage us to keep creating. in as little as 5 minutes, you can make someone’s whole day by letting them know that they are appreciated!

the goal is to message and reblog from a different person each day for 7 days straight. let’s spread some love!

SUGGESTIONS FOR TAGS

need help figuring out what to write in the tags when you reblog someone’s work? here are some elements of gif making that people spend lots of time and effort on and would love if you noticed and commented on them:

coloring: how are the gifs colored? are they vibrant? pale? black and white? are there any gradients? does any specific color pop out at you? point out something you like about the colors in the gifset.

layout: how many gifs are there in the set? 3? 5? 9? are they stacked, placed next to each other, or a mixture of both? did they use big gifs or small gifs? point out something you like about the layout of the gifset.

composition: how are the gifs arranged? is there symmetry with the shapes or colors used? what visuals did they choose to represent the piece of media? which gif draws your eye the most and why? point out something you like about the composition of the gifset.

typography: how did the creator use text? is it small and soft? big and dramatic? did they use long quotes, or short phrases? is the text warped, tilted, straight? how did they make it stand out or blend in with the gif? point out something you like about the typography in the gifset.

sharpening/blur: are the gifs sharp? blurry? is there a crisp visual quality to them? are some parts softer than others, and does that direct your focus to certain areas? point out something you like about the sharpness or blur used in the gifset.

i found arianna’s blog at some point when my fixation on the umbrella academy was at its peak. i was admiring her gifs before i even learned how to gif. it was so amazing to see someone creating so heavily for a show i loved so much, and when i first started out i would compare my tua colorings to hers to try and improve. to this day i am floored every time i see one of her magnificent tua edits in my tag.

i first found christie’s blog when i was coming back to tumblr from a little bit of a break, when i was trying to reconnect with the fandoms i had been active in. when i saw all of her posts i was overwhelmed with excitement that someone else out there was also super into disney channel. i followed her and admired her stuff before i even knew how to gif, and she followed me back shortly after i started learning. i remember freaking out a little bit when we first became mutuals because i looked up to her so much.

christie is an influential editor to me because she’s one of the reasons i started giffing in the first place, and her passion and enthusiasm are infectious. when i was new to giffing i used to make my silly little disney channel sets and compare them to hers; i would tag her and get so excited every time she reblogged something i made. it directly fed into my motivation to gif to have someone who made me feel like i wasn’t alone, to have someone else who cared about my obscure shit and made me feel seen. christie is influential because she is a complete powerhouse in the disney channel fandom, and she gifs for herself always. she doesn’t do any of it for notes or for clout, but just because she cares so much. her drive to make whatever she wants, whenever, has been extremely helpful in my journey to learning to do the same over the years. in the beginning i was so self-critical and obsessed with notes, but her stuff always reminded me that this is art and it’s supposed to be fun. christie makes gorgeous edits for niche fandoms, and her passion shines through with each creation.

CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: Maggie (@diegohargreves)

Support your local gif makers! In celebration of my one year gif-iversary, I am posting shoutouts to gif makers who have motivated and inspired me with their creativity in the past year. This post is for Maggie, whose gifs can be found here.

Maggie has been making gifs since 2014, and over the years they have gathered a diverse skill set that they use across many fandoms, characters, and ships. I love Maggie’s gif making style because although they are clearly established and capable of maintaining consistency, no two gifsets of theirs look or feel completely the same; while a lot of us tend to settle once we find our style, Maggie is not afraid to experiment with different effects, fonts, sizes, and colorings, keeping their content fresh and exciting.

MUST-SEE EDITS

Barry Berkman in Make Your Mark - This gifset uses color in a briliant and subtle way that doesn’t overwhelm the senses, but instead sneaks up on you with its clever coordination. Subdued, neutral colors accompany strong, vibrant hues, and the whole thing is topped off with a colorful caption. The gif of Barry in the shower wows with its striking green, and it is immediately followed up with perhaps the most impactful gif of the set. Maggie is a seasoned gifmaker who understands that sometimes less is more, and the gif of Barry against the black background plays well off of the colorful gifs in the set, breaking up the excitement for a small, dramatic display of the (metaphorically and literally) darker parts of the show.

Five and Diego - This gifset deserves to be appreciated for the bold choices Maggie made in creating it. They could have made it your average, “normal” colored scene that is driven by the caption text, but instead, they chose to bring out and emphasize the yellow background; if you make gifs, you know that yellow is not an easy color to work with, as it is difficult to manipulate without impacting the skin tones. However, Maggie pulled off this effect smoothly and effortlessly, using the soft yet vibrant yellows to draw attention to the scene and frame the action. Pay special attention to the third gif, where the coloring stays consistent even with the increase in the amount of motion.

Jaskier and Geralt: Please Don’t Go - While Maggie is highly skilled in using color in gifsets, they have also proven that they can do it all, as they post a decent amount of black and white gifsets. Black and white as a color scheme can sometimes be regarded as muting the full experience of a set, but not the way Maggie does it! They consistently use black and white as a way to further the tone of a gifset and let the font play a starring role in the work, and this set is no exception. The tone set by the sad but smooth motion of Jaskier walking away is bolstered by the text that reads “please don’t go” and fades into weaker lines. Maggie uses the effects of text not as just an element of their gifsets, but a storytelling device; they also know how to format captions in interesting ways that complement their gifsets, as this caption fades to grey in a similar way to the text in the gifs.

Shazam - This gifset uses vivid pinks and greens to bring the film to life, and the level of control over coloring demonstrated here really speaks to Maggie’s talent as an editor. The pinks, blues, and greens are all coordinated and match well from gif to gif, showing that Maggie has a sharp eye for coloring and a diligent spirit. The first gif featuring handwritten text in bold colors grabs the viewers’ attention instantly, and the brilliant pinks guide the eye comfortably through the rest of the set. The third gif wows with its yellows and oranges that give way to blue, and as always, the caption coloring fits perfectly with the gifset as a whole.

Steve and Nancy in colors - This gifset shows off both Maggie’s eye for colors and their mastery of text and fonts. Maggie used bold, bright yellows, oranges, reds, and pinks to bring this set to life, and they used the colors of the text to further the aesthetic. The fonts they chose play off of each other well, emphasizing certain parts of the text and softening others. The fourth gif features a stunning pinkish purple that draws the eye and holds viewers’ attention.
