Did you know that art teachers sometimes talk about painting or drawing something being a way to discover more about it…?
"The Inland Sea at Rhyd y Gari" is a watercolour painting of the beach between the main section of Ynys Mon (Anglesey) and Ynys Cybi (St Cybi's Island/Holy Island).
The small island to the West of Anglesey is called "Holy" because of the high concentration of standing stones, burial chambers, and other religious sites on it. The two islands are separated by Syth y Cymyran (the Cymyran Strait) which has powerful tidal effects cutting the images of moving water into the sands.
Mynydd Twr (Holyhead Mountain) the highest hill in Anglesey at 722 feet (220 m), stands in the background of the watercolour. On a clear day its summit offers magnificent views towards the Isle of Man, the Skerries and the mountains of Ireland.
But by studying this view with watercolour paint, I felt I learned more about it than the bare facts!

#inmemoriam - Il 25 aprile del 2001 sul circuito di Lausitzring in Germania l'incidente mortale di Michele Alboreto, indimenticabile pilota italiano. Un uomo d'altri tempi sia dentro che fuori dalla pista e per questo amato dai tifosi e da Enzo Ferrari, che decise di affidargli una delle sue vetture in Formula 1 nonostante la sua avversione all'ingaggio di piloti italiani nella sua scuderia. Il Mondiale sfiorato nel 1985, perso quando sembrava alla sua portata, alimentó il mito del pilota milanese così come fecero le sue cinque vittorie nel Circus, ottenute nonostante avversari fortissimi del calibro di Alain Prost, Keke Rosberg, Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell e Nelson Piquet, solo per fare alcuni nomi. Gli ultimi anni di attività in Formula 1 non furono altrettanto brillanti, soprattutto per la scarsa competitività delle vetture guidate. Eppure il rispetto di tifosi ed appassionati non venne mai a mancare, così come la voglia di dare il massimo in pista. E poi il meritato successo nella 24 ore di Le Mans del 1997 insieme al suo ex compagno di squadra in Ferrari Stefan Johansson e Tom Kristensen al volante della TWR-Porsche WSC-95 e nella 12 ore di Sebring del 2001 con l'Audi insieme al connazionale Dindo Capello e al francese Laurent Aiello. Proprio per l'Audi Alboreto tornó in pista nel Lausitzring per provare la rinnovata R8 in preparazione della 24 ore di Le Mans. In pieno rettilineo il pilota milanese perse il controllo della sua vettura a causa di una foratura, finendo capottato fuori dal tracciato dopo aver urtato una recinzione. Lecturas de cuarentena: Los autos que conocí gracias al libro de Jalopnik
Durante la última semana estuve leyendo el libro “Jalopnik’s Book of Car Facts and History Even Gearheads Don’t Know”. Se trata de una colección de notas interesantes que Jalopnik, uno de los sitios de cultura tuerca más reconocidos del mundo, publicó y que no son tan conocidas.
Algunas de las historias si las conocía pero es interesante volver a repasarlas, como la de la empresa de taxis eléctricos Electric Taxi Company que operó en los 1900 en Estados Unidos y que podría haber cambiado el hecho de que los vehículos a combustión terminaron imponiéndose en el mundo. Al final fue la caída de esta tremenda empresa que pretendía ser una especie de Uber de los 1900, lo que aceleró la caída de los vehículos eléctricos al dejar en manifiesto todas sus limitaciones en cuanto a baterías y costos, cosas que recién estamos volviendo a analizar hoy, más de 100 años después. Pero muchas de las historias eran nuevas para mí, ya que aunque sigo a Jalopnik desde hace tiempo es imposible leer todo. Y no hay tal como saber todo acerca de los autos y la cultura motor.
Por ejemplo, el Volkswagen Beetle casi sin modificaciones fue el primer auto en recorrer la Antártica con éxito, en 1963. Fue apodado “Red Terror”.
Otra historia interesante es la del chasis 7 de TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), que comenzó su carrera en el mundo de los prototipos de endurance en 1991 como el Jaguar XJR-14 (foto 1), pero ese proyecto se acabó y se convirtió en un Mazda MXR-01 en 1992 y ese proyecto se volvió a acabar así es que se tranformó en el TWR WSC-95 con motor Porsche en 1995 y ganó dos 24 Horas de Le Mans seguidas en 1996 y 1997 para ser convertido en el Porsche LMP1 98 en 1998 con Porsche aburrido de que un auto privado le ganara. Cuatro fabricantes distintos, marcas tanta relación que fueron recibiendo este auto y manteniéndolo en la lucha por los primeros lugares. De hecho sus triunfos no son muy recordados porque TWR terminaría por desaparecer, no mucho más adelante, en 2002. Hasta ese entonces, solo tres autos habían ganado Le Mans en años consecutivos con el mismo chasis: Un Bentley en 1929 y 1930, el Ford GT40 en 1968 y 1969 y el Joest 956B-117 Porsche de 1984 y 1985.
También la historia de sentimientos encontrados del récord de velocidad en carretera, logrado por Rudolf Caracciola en la Autobahn en un Mercedes W125 Rekordwagen en 1938, en plena era de propaganda nazi. Caracciola alcanzó 431 kilómetros por hora. Tratando de batir el récord y quedarse con el reconocimiento, en un siguiente intento se mató Bernd Rosemeyer en el Auto Union V16 Type C Streamline.
Otra historia interesante del libro involucra este insólito camión retrofuturista Cargoliner que la marca estadounidense Faegol trató de desarrollar en los 50 (foto 2).
Y esto es solo una pincelada de las muchas historias que tiene el libro. Definitivamente una buena lectura y muy variada.

In Europe, the brand new Volkswagen Polo sixth generation was presented back in June.
