Summary: Yuu is worried about Malleus’s recent behavior and decides to have a talk with him about it during Malleus’s next visit.

Ever since Yuu had returned from his adventure on the Isle of Woe, Malleus had been seeking his out for his company more than all of the midnight meetings the two had shared since they first met months ago. Not that Yuu was complaining about it! His time spent with Malleus was some of his most treasured here in Twisted Wonderland, it was just…Malleus was always distracted when they spent time together now, full of anxious attachment when he sought Yuu out. And Yuu…he could see the signs. The signs of an overblot waiting to happen. And he wasn’t having any of it, if he could help it. Malleus was one of his first friends in his new home and he wasn’t going to let his friend self-destruct.

The opportunity to talk to Malleus soon presented itself when, like clockwork, Malleus appeared in the Ramshackle garden in a sparkle of green light, brows pinched as he looked about for Yuu.

“Tsunotarou!”

The pinch of his brows smoothed at the sound of Yuu’s cheerful greeting, walking over to find him sitting at their usual spot under the giant tree in the dorm’s yard.

“Child of man.”

Yuu smiled at his greeting, motioning for Malleus to sit beside him. The tension in Malleus’s shoulders was visible now as he took his seat beside Yuu, their pinkies overlapping as their hands remained just shy of touching.

“What brings you by today, Mal?”

A petulant frown was what he got in response. “Can I not wish to simply see you?”

Yuu shook his head, slotting their fingers together, stroking the back of Malleus’s hand with his thumb. “I didn’t mean it like that. I’m just worried about you, that’s all. I’ve been wanting to talk to you about it. Ever since I came back from the Isle of Woe, you’ve come by to see me every day. Sometimes up to three times a day. I know you’re too busy to be checking on me that often.”

“I am not…’checking’ on you,” Malleus scoffed, looking from the corner of his eye as if he could pretend that he hadn’t scoffed. “I am…simply more aware of the little time we have left together before the…end of the school year.”

Oh. Yuu took in the sight of Malleus refusing to meet his gaze, the hunched shoulders…and exhaled soft and slow, tugging Malleus to lay in the grass beside him. Malleus went willingly, shooting Yuu a brief look of confusion as they faced each other.

“That’s a heavy burden to be thinking of all the time, Malleus,” Yuu murmured, squeezing Malleus’s hand. “You’ll miss out on all our time together by worrying about the future all the time. Nothing is permanent, you know?”

Malleus looked away, brows pinching again, before looking back, tremulous as he met Yuu’s eyes.

“I know. And yet, I…I,” he voice turned hoarse, unable to meet Yuu’s eyes anymore, “I’ve…begun to become afraid…of losing you.”

The confession sat quiet and heavy between, poignant and earnest, and Yuu could only stare.

Stare and stare as he thought, There’s not really anything I can do about that, is there? I can’t make any promises. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to stay in the future.

Swallowing, Yuu reached up, sliding his hand up the back of Malleus’s neck and carded it into his hair, running it through his strands. Malleus’s eyes closed, leaning into the touch.

“I’ve…become afraid of losing you, too,” Yuu whispered, voice equally as wrecked, as he pressed his lips to Malleus’s forehead, closing his own eyes.

Neither knew how long they lay there, or when they had fallen asleep, entangled in each other. The only fact they knew was that time was untouchable to them, in the space of the confessions they had shared, the future a vague horror too hazy to imagine. A horror neither wanted to consider right now. In this moment, it was just them, and they were loath to be parted.

Rainy Day

MC/Yuu gets caught in the rain without an umbrella. Thankfully, there is a tall, dark stranger to take pity on you.

There was no weather channel you could turn the TV on to. Night Raven College didn't even have a newsletter to warn students ahead of time about the weather forecast. For a school full of magic-users, nobody seemed to be predict the oncoming assault of rain. And seeing as you're technically not supposed to be here, you didn't exactly pack an umbrella before you were teleported to another dimension. Hence, you were stuck standing beneath one of the castle's towers becoming drenched. Grim didn't share in your misery as he was being held back (again) by Professor Trein, along with Ace and Deuce.

You could barely make out the roof of Ramshackle House from where you stood, but between there and here was a field awash with a growing lake. Your were already cold and wet from standing in the rain like an idiot. All you had to protect yourself was a binder, which didn't shield you much except for the very top of your head.

"Child of Man?"

You whipped around to find Malleus of all people exiting the castle. His usual entourage wasn't lurking around anywhere, which you found curious. Malleus tall, lean frame was haloed by the largest umbrella you'd ever seen. Although, it only made sense that some like Malleus, who was nearly seven feet tall, which didn't even include his horsn, would need an umbrella that big. It was almost comically big and decorated with bats and dragons.

"Nice umbrella," you said.

"It was a present from Lilia. What is it that you're doing out here? Aren't you getting soaked through to the marrow?" Malleus asked.

"Well, I...I don't exactly have an umbrella. I didn't have the chance to come prepared when I got stuck here."

"So Crowley hasn't even bothered to make sure you're suited for weather changes? Tsk," Malleus shook his head. "How typical of him."

"I'm just gonna wait for my friends to get out of Trein's 'extra lessons' and head home with Grim," you said.

"Alone? In the rain?" Said Malleus.

You shrug your shoulders. "Not much else I can do."

"Nonsense," said Malleus, "I'll escort you home. My umbrella is big enough for three, Child of Man."

"Wait. Hold on! Shouldn't you wait for Lilia and the others? Aren't they supposed to be your knights or something?"

"You could say that I gave them a little slip. I wanted to enjoy walking by myself for a little while."

"But wouldn't walking me to Ramshackle house defeat the purpose of that?" You asked.

Malleus had to bend down to get to your eye-level. His piercing draconic eyes could see right through you. Heat rushed to your face thanks to being so close to him.

"I make exceptions for you," said Malleus. "Now, allow me to assist you."

With his long arms and balancing his umbrella on his shoulder, Malleus scooped you up. He handed you the umbrella to hold while he carried you in his arms. Malleus almost seemed to glide along the ground while walking. There was effortless grace in every step. His lean muscles rippled against your body as he held you close to his chest. Malleus didn't seem to mind that his shoes were going to be soaked through by tramping through the field between the school and Ramshackle.

Your heart pounded inside of your chest and you wondered if Malleus could heart it rattling against your ribcage. Butterflies fluttered madly in your stomach.

"Malleus," you said.

"Yes, Child of Man?"

"You don't have to carry me. I can walk on my own. You don't have to go the extra mile to help me," you said.

"Nonsense. I don't mind at all. Besides, it amuses me to carry you like this and you wouldn't want to ruin your shoes anymore than you already have, do you?"

"Well...no. Not really. But--"

"Humor me, Yuu/Reader." It sounded less like a request and more of a command, and you were in no position to deny a powerful prince his wishes. You laid in his arms, puzzled and shocked. When did he start calling you by your name instead of Child of Man?

You gently bit down on your tongue and relented. Neither of you spoke much while Malleus trekked through the rain...because of you. You hated that your soaking wet clothes were ruining Malleus' pristine appearance. You felt the wet spots on his blazer from where he carried you and where your clothes soaked through his. Malleus wore an indifferent mask in the face of his own discomfort. Only when he reached the porch of Ramshackle did Malleus let you down.

"T-Thanks, Mal. You really didn't have to do all that, but I'm grateful," you said.

"Mal?"

"You know, short for Malleus. If you don't mind. You always call me a nickname, I just figured I could return the favor. But if you don't like it I can just call you Malleus."

Malleus smirked, showing a bit of fang. "You're such a curiosity, Child of Man. Very well, if it pleases you, you can call me Mal."

"O-Okay, Mal. I'll see you at school tomorrow?"

"Yes, but I have request of you first," said Malleus.

"Depends on what it is," you replied.

"If it's still raining tomorrow, may I walk you to school?" Malleus asked.

Your heart leapt into your throat. You stared at him for the longest time. Was this a fairy con? Malleus waited patiently for your answer.

"What about--"

"They might be there to protect me, but I can send them away if they make you uncomfortable," said Malleus.

"I guess, I guess I'll say 'yes.' Yes, Mal, you can walk me to school tomorrow if it's still raining," you said.

Malleus took a step closer to you. He leaned down to where you thought he was going to kiss you. Malleus hesitated a moment, as if he himself was debating on what to do. Instead of his lips, Malleus patted your head. In an instant, your clothes and hair were completely dried.

"Thank you, Mal!"

"I look forward to escorting you tomorrow," said Malleus before turning away.

You walk into Ramshackle, heart beating out of your chest. Just what have you gotten yourself into?

Meanwhile...

"Master Lilia! You must see this!" Sebek stared out the window.

Lilia walked up next to him and followed Sebek's gloved finger. Lilia could recognize the umbrella anywhere. It was Malleus and...Yuu?

"Oh? What have we here?" Said Lilia.

"That dastardly human is trying to dirty up His Highness! They probably cast some kind of spell on him to make him carry them through the rain!"

"They don't have magic, Sebek, so that would be impossible," said Silver.

"Let Malleus have some fun with the human," said Lilia. "He must be infatuated by the little thing to go out of his way to help them."

"Preposterous! His Highness Malleus would never fall for a weak human!" Sebek raised his voice.

"Hush, Sebek. Stranger things have happened," said Lilia. "I'm old enough to know that."
