#tx: adulthood
Text
These are the things I hate about adulthood.
My mother-in-law is back in the hospital in Abilene. For your own safety and well-being don't ever get sick in Abilene, TX. I don't know what is going on at their hospital but it is not good.
Last year she got a cut on her arm that got infected. It wasn't even a big cut. She ended up in the hospital and in the hospital she got a staph infection. In the hospital they let the infection get so bad she nearly had to get her arm cut off.
They would tell her she was fine and tell her to go home and then two days later she would be right back in the hospital again. This happened about six different times before the infection was finally under control.
Now she is sick again and in the same Hospital. At first they said she had hepatitis. Then they said she had pneumonia. Now they are saying she has cancer.
All I can think of is how we have to prepare ourselves for her death, for packing her things after she dies, planning for her funeral and her final expenses.
I think she has life insurance and I think she has a will. But I have never dealt with any of this stuff personally.
When my dad died I was 20, and being autistic I reverted so far back it was like I was 12 or younger. My sister made all the arrangements and handled everything. I could not function. I was just . . . . I don't even know how I was because I blocked everything out. It was so traumatic..
I just know she did everything herself.
But my husband is even worse than I am under stress. He doesn't even like to make his own doctor appointments or call in to work himself when he is sick. I have to do all of that because it stresses him out so much.
So I have an awful feeling that I am going to be the one figuring out where all her stuff goes and planning for the funeral and the burial.
I know these are rights of Passage we all must face but man it is so daunting.

Cardinal Rule • You Should Be the Angel On My Shoulder
Tumblr media
Master | Four | Six
Pairing: Jake Seresin x oc Lexi Knox
Warnings: flashback to Jake and Lexi’s first hookup! Smut incomingggggg. Slight cliffhanger at the end (sorry not sorry), Jake has a slightly asshole moment
Austin, TX
Summer break between sophomore and junior year
You’d think Lexi would have stayed in her native Kentucky between semesters, but you’d be wrong.
Her relationship with her parents was rocky at best when she left for school, but her “abhorrent behavior” at the Kentucky Derby that first spring with Jake and Joey really cemented the end of it.
Lexi had been beside herself with excitement to share her love of Thunder Over Louisville and all the Derby Day excitement with the Seresins. You couldn’t wipe the smile off of Jake’s face as he watched the elite pilots display their tricks over the city and confidently stated “that’s gonna be me one day.”
The celebration flowed into the night and the three found themselves on Fourth Street until the early hours of the following day. Jake, while protective of the girls, enjoyed watching them have a small taste of the freedom adulthood brought and played chaperone with a smile. Joey would find her way into trouble with or without him, and he preferred to keep her chaos where he could see it.
Instead of sitting in the swanky box her family owned, Lexi had chosen to throw caution to the wind, joining her friends on the track and gambling with no rhyme or reason. She was still clad in an expensive (and ridiculous) hat and a fancy sundress, but her association with “the track sitters” disgusted her parents. The Derby wasn’t a place to be seen having fun, it was purely a place to be seen. Refusing to allow their daughter to tarnish their family image, they simply excommunicated her instead.
When the time came to pack her things and return home at the end of the year, Lexi followed Joey west. The Seresins welcomed her with open arms, wide smiles, and a promise that she always had a place at their home.
It was strange at first, Lexi was completely dumbfounded by how much love and comfort filled the house. She was used to walking on eggshells and always behaving in a way that would put cotillion lessons to use. The first time she heard LouAnne Seresin freely yell cuss words, she about had a heart attack. Surely something had to be very wrong, wives don’t speak like that where she grew up.
“Well, shit fire, Marshall! You should warn a girl instead sneakin’ up on and scarin’ the hell outta her!” She had screeched before falling into a fit of laughter at her husband’s antics. He’d slipped up behind her while she was making breakfast and pinched her butt.
Joey groaned from the table. “Gross, y’all are gonna make me lose my appetite.”
“Can’t help it, Joey girl. You’ll understand one day,” Marshall winked in her direction before kissing his wife’s head and joining the girls at the table.
That summer had been Lexi’s introduction into what a healthy, loving relationship looked like. Still, they had to be the exception to the rule. There was no way that was the norm for marriages.
After that, it became an unspoken rule for Lexi to return to the Seresin ranch during any and all school breaks when the girls weren’t tied up with cheer.
The girls had been part of the back to back national championship winning team the first two years at school, but after a huge fallout with one of their teammates, they both decided it was for the best for them to leave the team. It wasn’t worth the drama and they were both ready to shift their focus to their majors, knowing they would require more dedication than their previous years.
Tumblr media
A creak from the stairs breaks Lexi out of her reverie and she turns her head to find a familiar blonde one coming into view.
“Did everyone losing their mind over Junior Miss Kentucky send you into hiding, your royal highness?” Jake teases.
Lexi groans. “I regret ever letting you and your sister find that out. Where is the hellion anyway?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Jake grumbles.
“Taking the ostrich approach won’t change the fact that she’s dating Bradley, Jake.”
“I know, I know. What makes it worse is he’s not even a bad guy when it comes to her and I kind of hate it.”
Jake joins her where she’s perched on the windowsill of the barn overlook, eyes tracing the darkening fields of the ranch. “I can’t believe I managed to score getting leave over the fourth, this is my parents biggest weekend of the year and it’s always been my favorite party.”
“It really is fantastic. I’m shocked you’re sitting here with me instead of getting your legendary firework show all set up, though.” Lexi teases.
“Eh, handing it over to the Larson kid was the right call. He needs to learn how to do it right since I can’t guarantee I’ll be here every year,” he replies with a tinge of sadness in his voice.
“Everyone’s proud of you, know you? The constant bragging about you from literally any person I talk to is slightly nauseating,” Lexi punctuates her words by bumping her shoulder against his to indicate her teasing.
“What about you, Lou? You proud of me?” He bumps her back.
Immensely, she wants to say, but refrains. “Eh, ask me again when you’re flying Thunder, Tex.”
Her phone pings with a notification, cutting through the tension growing between them. She opens it, finding a Snapchat from her on again, off again boyfriend Nathan. It’s a video with a view from the floor of her favorite up and coming band performing on Fourth Street.
“Rat bastard,” she grumbles, irritated he went when he promised he wouldn’t go without her.
Jake catches a peek over her shoulder and grimaces. “He really went without you?”
“Looks like it,” Lexi huffs defeatedly.
They sit in silence as Jake works up the courage to ask the question that’s been burning in the back of his mind for months now.
“Hey, Lou?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I ask you a question and you give me an honest answer?”
“When have I ever not answered honestly?”
She makes a valid point, she’s always been blunt and never sugar coats a thing.
“Why you thinkin’ ‘bout somebody that ain’t thinkin’ ‘bout you?” He asks, his accent more pronounced after the few beers he’s had.
“Huh?” Lexi asks, confused.
"What's so great about him to keep you hangin around? I don’t get it.” His reply is shy, and it might be the first time Lexi’s ever seen him that way.
She shrugs and looks down. "I dunno. It's not like I love him or anything. He's convenient, the sex doesn't suck, and he can be sweet when he wants to be. It’s not like I plan on marrying him anyway.”
"Oh, c'mon honey. We both know you deserve better than that,” Jake continues, tucking a knuckle under her chin and tilts her face until she’s looking at him again.
"You met my parents, my dad more specifically. I'm used to having a little demon in my ear, constantly telling me I'm not worth anything on my own. It's nice to have the occasional reminder that I can feel something other than self loathing. I don't have the convenience of a little angel on my shoulder reminding me that I deserve to be treated well, Jake."
She tries to turn her head to look away again, but Jake shifts to grip her jaw and pull her into a world stopping kiss. Without hesitation, Lexi’s lips part for Jake’s tongue and he brings his free hand to her hair. Just as his fingers tighten at the base of her neck, the fireworks start popping in the background and Jake pulls away with a smug smile on his face.
"What about now? That make you feel something?" Jake asks, thumb stroking under her ear.
For the first time since they met two years ago, Lexi doesn’t have a smart comeback. She just nods and stammers out “uh huh.”
Jake bites his lip to tamp down the elation he feels over the fact he made the most brilliant girl he’s ever met a little dumb with just a kiss. “You want an angel on your shoulder? I’ll do you one better. You should be the angel on my shoulder, think that over.”
Fireworks pop in the sky and electricity crackles between Jake and Lexi. He’d let his stubble grow out a little while on leave and his eyes glimmered with the desire he’d been desperately trying to hide for years now. But he didn’t have to conceal it right now, he got to let it sit front and center on his mind while Lexi stared up at him with kiss swollen lips.
She wordlessly turns, places her feet on the loft floors, and stands. Jake panics for a second, thinking he went too far this time. An apology builds in his chest but dies on his lips when she reaches her hand out to him.
Lexi’s favorite place in the entire world was right here in the loft, so LouAnne always kept outdoor furniture and cushy blankets (stored in a basket that somehow managed to keep spiders out) in the loft.
It paid off more than ever at this very moment. Jake slipped his hand into Lexi’s and she pulled him toward the couch.
With a shove to his chest, Jake falls backward onto the couch and Lexi is quick to climb on his lap. When she leans in to kiss him, her head bumps against the brim of his Stetson. Before he has the chance to remove it himself, Lexi takes it off of his head and plops it on her own.
Jake raises an eyebrow in question, tipping the too big hat back to see her eyes better.
Lexi grins down at him. “I know the rule.”
“Lou, I hope you know you don’t have to do anythin-” Jake starts.
His hands are settled firmly on her hips where she’s straddling him. She rolls them forward slightly, causing both of them to inhale sharply when the seam of her overalls catches on his belt buckle.
“When have you ever seen me do something I don’t want to?” She asks, threading her fingers in his slightly overgrown hair.
Jake pretends to think hard. “Never. Unless you count not causing bodily harm to that bitch on the team. That was not something you wanted to do,” he runs his nose along her neck and grins when he feels her shudder.
“You gonna shut up and kiss me yet?” She teases, squirming in his lap.
He gently grabs his beloved Stetson from the top of her head and places it topside down on the side table to his left. Before Lexi could blink, Jake turns and has her back pinned to the couch. A wide smirk crosses his face as he takes in the sight beneath him.
Long, dark hair fanned against the worn leather. A red flush staining her cheeks and chest. Gray blue eyes wide, staring up at him with excitement.
Jake’s heart swells and he immediately distracts himself from the feeling by lightly tracing his fingers up and down her legs, easily lost in the feel of the skin that had been tanned by the Texas sun.
Lexington Knox was an enigma, and he’d been enthralled with her since day one.
Gorgeous, smart as a whip, fiercely independent.
He flirted his ass off when she’d pop up during FaceTime calls and the few times he’d seen her while visiting Joey, loving the rush it gave him to know there was no chance of it going anywhere. It started as a game, the two of them exchanging horrendous pickup lines and over the top compliments to see who could make the younger Seresin blush fastest. It had evolved as they got to know each other and realized Lexi was a much more permanent fixture in the Seresins' lives than anyone had expected. Eventually, he looked past the facade and saw the girl it was hiding.
Lonely, insecure, jaded.
He met the people that shattered her and was impressed with how strong she turned out to be. One thing was for sure, though: she didn’t need any help being put back together.
Even though the southern mama’s boy craved the idea of tethering her to his side, he knew better. Someone with that much fire in their soul and desire to be their own person would never be happy to have their identity tied to someone else’s. As much as he hated the fact that he couldn’t truly have her, Jake could never hold it against her. He was the same, after all. They were kindred spirits and everyone knew it. His wild soul belonged in the air, just as hers belonged wherever the hell it wanted to be. He wouldn’t be happy spending his life following someone else’s dreams, there’s no way he’d ask her to do just that.
He’d spent the last two years fighting the pull he felt for Lexi, but he lost his grip today. She looked so perfect in her overalls and cowboy boots, like she had been on the ranch her entire life, and he couldn’t bear the sad look in her eyes for another second. So tonight, he broke. He’d take whatever she gave him with zero care for whatever fallout might follow.
Nails scratching across his scalp snapped him out of his trance. He turns and nips at the warm flesh of her upper thigh then soothes the sting with gentle kisses. He repeats the process on each leg until his nose comes into contact with the hem of those damned overalls.
“As sexy as you look in these, I just have this feelin’ they’ll look even better off.” Jake grins up at her as his fingers make quick work of the snaps holding the denim together.
“You’ve had me half hard all day, walkin’ around while lookin’ like somethin’ right outta one of my wet dreams. But you knew that, didn’t ya, pretty girl?” Jake mused aloud as he slipped the boots off of her feet and pulled her to stand. He kneeled and sat back on his heels as he stripped her down to the tiny swimsuit she’d been teasing him with all day.
She looked down at him with a wicked grin on her face. “Maybe, maybe not. As good at that youth sized tshirt looks on you, I think you’re a little overdressed.”
With that, she reached down and grabbed a fistful of his shirt and pulled until he stood at his full height. She gently tugged at the soft material and Jake complied, his shirt on the floor by their feet in a flash. His hands traced down her sides and over her hips before gripping the backs of her thighs and lifting.
He dropped back down onto the couch and grinned when he felt Lexi shiver against him. It was too hot outside for her to be cold, so there was no doubt it was her visceral reaction to his skin against hers. Jake’s lips found her quickly and he sucked in a harsh breath when she reached for his belt buckle.
“Fuck. Knew you’d look gorgeous on top of me,” he groaned into her neck.
“You always talk this much, Tex? Maybe put that mouth to-OHSHIT!” She whined as his teeth sank into the swell of her breast.
“You were saying?” Jake asked between wet kisses across her chest.
“Huh? What? Nope,” she stuttered out, sinking her hands in his hair once again.
Jake brought her lips to his in a frantic kiss, all tongue and teeth and heavy breaths as the minutes passed. His hands slid under the band of her bikini top and his thumbs brushed across her nipples as she unbuttoned his pants in a hurry.
“Jake. Please,” she panted.
He stilled immediately. “You’re sure you wanna do this?”
Lexi pulled one of his hands free, causing Jake to panic until she guided it between them. “You tell me.”
“Fuck,” Jake growled when he felt the soaked material of her bottoms.
“That’s what I thought. Condom?” She asked, her eyes locked on his.
Jake shifted his weight and pushed his hips up as he reached for his wallet, the angle making Lexi’s head fall back on a moan. While his hands worked to retrieve and open the condom, hers were pushing his jeans down until his dick was freed.
She reached down and palmed the length of him, causing her to gasp. “Of fucking course you’d have a dick as big as your ego.”
Jake huffs a laugh as he rolls the latex on. “I give off small dick energy or somethin’ Louie girl?” He hooks his thumb in her bottoms, pulls them to the side, and runs two fingers through the slick pooling between them. “Think you can take it, darlin’?”
“Guess we’re about to find out.”
“You and that damn mouth, honey,” he smirks as he lines himself up. “I’m gonna love hearing the way you say my name and only my name.”
He lands a soft slap to her ass, encouraging her to move, and his eyes almost roll back when she moans and sinks down an inch.
“Holy fuck,” she whines.
“My Louie girl likes it a little rough, huh?” Jake teases, tangling his hand in her hair and pulling until she’s looking at him again.
“Uhhh, uh huh.”
“Shit, honey. Ready for more?” Jake asks, fighting every cell in his body to stay still and not push his hips up into her.
She takes a deep breath before sliding her palms up his chest. With a firm grip on his broad shoulders, she rises up slightly and takes a little more.
“Atta girl. You’re doing so well, stretching just right for me. Relax a little, angel. Let me in.” Jake’s gentle commands and praises with every roll of her hips spurred her on until she was flush with his lap.
Lexi felt like every nerve ending in her body was on high alert. The way Jake’s chest hair brushed against her nipples with every deep inhale had her squirming. His rough hands on her hips were so warm, she was convinced he was searing the imprints of his palms on her skin. And the way she just felt him twitch inside her? She would store that in her memory forever.
“Tell me when you’re ready for me, darlin’. You feel like heaven wrapped around me, but I can wait for you.” Jake’s gravelly promise was barely above a whisper, but the conviction in his voice was loud and clear.
The buckle of Jake’s open belt pressed against her inner thigh, surely leaving an imprint. The thought made her clench on reflex and Jake’s lip pulled up into a snarl, and rumble escaped from deep in his chest.
“Feel good, flyboy?” She teases while she still has the ability to do so.
“Fucking hell, Lexi. I’m trying to behave here and you’re making it quite difficult.”
She leans down to nip at his earlobe. “Then don’t behave,” she whispers.
The thin string tying Jake to rationality snapped and he slipped his hands to her round ass. He lifts her like she weighs nothing and then sharply thrusts up into her. He repeats the process, pulling out further and pushing back in quicker each time until she’s putty in his hands.
“Damn, honey. You’re a fuckin’ dream, bouncing on my cock like this. Gonna dream of this sweet pussy stuffed with my cock all the fuckin’ time. Feels better than I could ever imagine.” Jake’s praises have her melting into him.
“Oh god, Jake. Feel so good. Ohhhh my god,” she moans, leaning back to place her palms on Jake’s firm thighs and causing her body to arch further towards him.
“That’s it, gorgeous. Put those perfect tits in my face.” Jake leans forward and captures a nipple in his mouth, laving his tongue over the taut bud.
“Jake! Shit, I’m close. What the fuck,” Lexi pants out, stunned she’s already teetering on the edge of a shocking orgasm.
“Mmm, I’m halfway there. My name rolling off your tongue does sound incredible, but you can still form other words so I’m not doing enough,” Jake grunts out between sharp thrusts.
Jake leans forward, wraps his arms around her back, and pulls her into his chest. With every possible inch of their skin touching, Jake binds his arm across her back and picks up speed.
Lexi’s eyes roll back at the sound of Jake’s skin clapping against her own, only for them to snap back open when the thumb of his free hand finds her clit and traces firm circles over the pressure point nobody else has been able to find.
His lips find her shoulder and he alternates between sucking kisses and pressing bite marks into her skin. “C’mon angel, let go for me. I know you want to. Give it to me, honey. You can do it.”
The filthy encouragement combined with the speed of his thrust and the pressure against her clit are just what she needs, but she holds on a little longer. “Come with me. Please, Jake.”
“Oh fuck, how could I say no to you? Sound so pretty beggin’ for me. You gonna come for me?” He coos.
“Come with you. Jake, please.”
“You’re almost there, honey. But I’m not gonna stop until you’re crying, until my name is the only thing on your lips and your mind. Give it to me,” he growls. His thrusts are lethal. Just the right speed and power behind them.
“Jake! I can’t. Can’t. Ugghh-hold it. Please. Please, Jake!
Just as he predicted, she’s crying his name and begging him to come with her. “Ok, sweetheart. Let go now, I’m right behind you.”
She shatters in his lap, a throaty “Jake” punched from her lungs. Jake follows immediately after, a deep and gravelly groan of her name passes his lips. “Lexi. Honey. Fuuuuuuck.”
He falls back against the coach, breathless and sated, with Lexi collapsed against his chest. They spend the next few minutes catching their breath before redressing and hoping they don’t look entirely debauched.
“I can’t believe you left marks!” Lexi yells and slaps his stomach upon seeing the love bites he left across her chest.
He smiles smugly, admiring his handiwork. “Why not? It works out in my favor. You either cover up what only I should see or you show them off, letting everyone know you’re mine.”
Lexi sighs heavily before she replies. “I’m not yours, Jake. I don’t belong to anyone and I never will. This doesn’t change anything.”
“You really expect me to go back to Florida and not dream about this? You want me to pretend this never happened?” Jake is taken aback by her abrasive approach and unfiltered honesty. It hurt like hell, if he was honest with himself.
“I never said either of those things. But your sister means too much to me to even chance losing her. Nobody can know.” She replies, heart in her throat.
“Umm. Ok, ouch. I’d never ask you to choose if that became a problem, but I get it. We’ll play by your rules, Lexi Lou.”
For now, he thought, as he watched her dress and escape to find Joey.
Tumblr media
Lexi’s eyelids felt like lead as she attempted to open them. She took a mental note of her physical state. She had soreness in her joints and severe pain in her left arm, suggesting a fracture somewhere around her elbow. Fuck, that one’s gonna suck. Her leg is numb from the way she’d been positioned on her right side and the cuffs were digging into her wrists.
“Well, I’ve landed myself in a real pickle here,” she murmurs to herself.
She looks up to see a large man in a chair by the door and she suddenly recalls what happened.
She accidentally missed their first official date. Surely he’s thinking she played him. He’ll never want to try anything now, and it breaks her heart a little bit.
“Should have let him pick me up, dammit” she mutters to herself.
Someone will realize she’s missing soon, right?
…right?
As she attempted to shift into a more comfortable position to hopefully nap in, her thoughts were on Jake and her team.
God did she hope they found and found her soon.

the gross pointe blank au
goddammit i CANNOT locate the post about this
okay so before the Epilogue killed my love of HS, i was meticulously planning out a fic that spiritually became SWDKTOWL. it was the Gross Pointe Blank AU.
the basic concept was a reworking of the original movie but with dirkjake. jake and dirk were high school sweethearts-- oh shit i found the original summary
Jake English went through the same crisis a lot of teenagers do on the cusp of adulthood, and ran away from home. He ran all the way into the army and was funneled into a particular CIA program that handles extrajudicial operations. He learned plenty of important life skills, like sniping and poison application and martial executions before leaving the CIA to go into business for himself as a private contractor.
Back in Austin, Jake left behind his high school sweetheart, Dirk Strider, but Dirk Strider never quite left him, carried around like a bullet waiting for its home. First, Jake dreamed of Dirk nightly, the boy he’d stood up and run away from. Then, a few years later, he learned his old flame was running a radio show back home. Soon, Jake’s jobs were filled with the voice of that same ghost every night.
He didn’t have to acknowledge how creepy this was, pining over his ex while listening to his show during jobs. Not until a job called him back to Austin, back to his once hometown.
This was going to be awkward.
yeah so jake runs away from home, becomes a gov't agent, then goes into business as an assassin, traveling the world, meeting people, and killing them. he's very much adrift, and still hung up on the things he abandoned and left behind.
when the information tech revolution happens, jake gets a smartphone and does the one thing you should NEVER DO and looks up his ex. dirk is still in Austin, TX, and it turns out his rich daddy bought him a radio station (well, Dave bought the station and thus Dirk can do his nightly music-and-philosophy show). and when jake realizes he can stream this show, he starts doing so. every night. his phone remains synched to the time zone back in Austin just so he can always know when its time.
i had this very very vivid image of jake, just getting out of a really bad job, stealing a car, and parking it in one of those tall, automated parking garages in dubai. as he waits for his pain meds to kick in at 1am, he listens to dirk's show, his phone resting on his chest, listening to dirk talk about obscure music opinions.
(many more details under the cut)
also here's the kicker; i was going to try to uh. voice the segments and embed them in the fic. yeah i know, terrible. here's the only one i previewed, all the way back in 2019. yeah don't laugh at me.
anyway, eventually The Plot kicks off. Jake fucks up a job (i had it in my head he was supposed to assassinate Cronus but accidentally killed Eridan, and the client (Dualscar) was Not Happy). he has to take a high profile job in the US to make amends. it just so happens to be in Austin, TX. What are the fucking odds.
now in the original GPB movie, Dan Akroyd plays this rival assassin who wants to form an Assassin Union and tries to force John Cuscak to join in. that's dated now in 2022, as it was in 2019 when i was plotting this so instead:
as soon as jake lands in the US, his car is tailed. really unsubtly. he finds a secluded spot to pull off too. it turns out good old Janey wants to have a chat. now that Jake has slinked back to the US, she wants to float this idea she has of franchising the murder biz, and she wants Jake to buy in and open one of the franchises under her banner. Jake is like yeah no that seems silly, this is an industry of mentally ill folks with a shitload of guns, we're not exactly the most community-driven of peoples. Jane tells him to reconsider. 8) He should really reconsider. Under her plan, in 5 years there will be no freelance work, it'll ALLLLL be under her umbrella and if Jake knows what's good for him, he'll get in at the ground floor. They part contentiously.
So Jake is SUPPOSED to open up this dossier on his target and get to killing, but. He's back home, and can super casually drive past Dirk's radio station while listening to it. Not creepy at all! Not obsessed and hung up on it! Nope!
He gets caught out eventually, not by Dirk but by Roxy. (Roxy is trans and Jake was the first person she told her cool new name too, and they were super close back in the day.) She is hyped as fuck to see Jake but also like "yo why the fuck are you idling in a rented car outside the job of the dude you stood up so much you left the fucking country, homes?"
it's a mess, and Jake wants to reconnect with people. it's Fucking Hard because he's uuuuuuuuuuh having a midlife crisis? basically? thinking about his life, his job, and all he left behind. meanwhile, jane is trying to do jake's assassination before he can to scope it out from under him and get him into even DEEPER shit with Dualscar, but jake cannot focus on that shit when he finally can see dirk again.
and dirk is. not THRILLED to see him. because Dirk waited and waited and waited, and Jake never came back, and Dirk isn't SAYING he never got over it but. yeah. so Dirk is tsuntsundere at best with jake, but jfc every time they are in a room together they can Feel It, the tension.
All of this is interspersed with more radio segments. one i really liked was Dirk doing a Arctic Monkeys block and having a whole segment about Alex Turner and that thing he said about how he wrote the best album of 2013 ("AM") and how fucking infuriating men like that are, because he's right, obviously, but also what is the poisoned lure of dudes who walk around knowing the effect they have on you? how do you handle them? (he's talking about jake natch) there was a lot of specially curated music that's basically a conversation-by-proxy with jake, i was gonna have a lot of fun there.
anwyay, things come to a head. right as jake is like "okay I'm gonna do this final job and then QUIT and try things with dirk," he opens the dossier he shoulda opened two weeks ago.... and his target is Dave fucking Strider. dumb. fucking. luck.
jake rushes to save dirk's dad from being merced by Jane's team, and does the full john cusack, "Dirk. [murders a guy] I'm in love with you. And I think we can make this work!" action sequence

↪️Trying to utilize oc text tag more ^_^
warning for brief mention of. non consensual acts. Assault. It's not glorified or graphically detailed. And even narratively, it is not treated...gratuitously?
There is a warning preceeding the paragraph that mentions it as well. ^_^
🐄 Al is a sort of stereotypical farm guy from TX (accent and all), his parents had him at a pretty young age and they love each other ^_^ Al very much has the "my mom/dad is my bff" relationship w them. They're also both very nice people. Al's dad also works at local flower shoppe and his mom is a carpenter/a local handyma'am. Theyd live in one of those smaller towns so wld be very involved w community, and wld sell and share any surplus of what they had on farm. Al is like. Early 30's currently, actually (like, Today). I keep trying to pause his age while i catch up to him but it jst keeps rising every year like i swear he'll be 40 next yr (JORK)
🌱 Al has always been a born caretaker, he likes taking care of things! He would be the first to offer to hold and babysit any new babies in his family, + liked playing house with baby dolls and/or the farm animals as a child. Heartbroken when he wasnt meant to have any siblings. He has always enjoyed the company of children, as a child and once he got older. He likes to take care of animals, he likes the process of nurturing plants to adulthood, he loves helping you when you are sick. Not only that but he likes talking things through with people and giving them advice. Very much Dad Friend.
🍎 Al was victim to one of those teachers that has it out for You Only as a child once he was growing more, and would sort of encourage ostracizing him in class. She'd often make unfounded comments about like. I bet this kid is going to be such a brute when he grows up!! Just look at how much taller and bigger he is than everyone already!!! Stay away from him lest he hurts you!! But more cruelly. Which really instilled a sort of Self Terror in his heart. Even now he's massively afraid of hurting others by accident even tho he's a grown ass adult. It's that sort of thing that sticks with you. Like my god Mrs. Whatever in 4th grade told everyone I was going to be an evil monster what if she's right. Al usually tells his parents everything but he never told them about this. Sadly he ends up not telling them about the most important stuff.
🏈 High school Al was still good and nice ^_^ bt things started getting sort of sucks for him around here. He was an avid sports player and was quite popular w people. He's. Not the best at choosing partners and it was around this time that people would sort of date him just to be the person dating that guy from the football team, without rlly caring about him. Status symbol. A trophy. It sort of drained him as he rlly would pour all of his romantic efforts onto each person fully, like Okay, THIS Will Be The Person I Marry One Day ^_^ not really grasping that they didn't actually Care about him as a person.
📚 This continues into college, I wish I cld go into the depths of HOW this all affected him but it gets a little more suggestive in nature so I can't, but he gets really desperate to have ANYBODY stay with him instead of constantly tossing him aside that he gains some bad habits in people pleasing, and loses a lot of self worth because he is a hopeless romantic, and wants somebody to be with. This is also where he copes with his feelings by overworking himself with studies as a distraction, so he loses friends and doesnt easily gain more, making it all worse with no real outside support. He'll tell his parents about new partners, but not the full picture so they cant help as much as they could if they knew. The full thing. They are very :/ about what he does tell them though
Content warning: Ok mention of assault is here, non graphic detailed, the emotional aftermath is. Al ends up with what is his worst partner, who constantly raises her voice at him and almost escalates to physical harm. She does put her hands on him at some point, and its infrequent and leaves him on edge all the time. He never leaves first in these situations bc he's been convinced it's all his fault, always (and he doesnt want to be. The brute his grade school teacher said he'd always become). She frequently invalidates his kindness and mistreats him. Like "stop smiling at me", breaking things he makes for her, ruining or throwing away his personal things, stomping on all his goodhearted intentions levels of cruelty.
Anyway, one night she forgoes his consent wrt intimacy and he freezes as it happens from the absolute shock of...consent being ignored like that and everything sort of plummets from there. He thinks its all his fault, and feels bad over...feeling bad about it. On top of feeling bad about it. Like he kicks himself for feeling bad about it when he could have easily just removed himself from the situation, being much taller and stronger than her (<- his unhealthy reasoning btw) and everything about it hurts him to think about. He feels stupid when it should be a non issue to him. (AGAIN... his warped reasoning not like the way i feel about it).
She leaves him soon after for his reaction to all this and verbally berates him for it so he's all alone again + in an even worse mental state than before. To this day he hasn't told his parents (+ didnt tell anybody back then either), because he's afraid they would also make fun of him and think it was a non issue when in reality they literally could have helped save him from further anguish. (He eventually does have an arc where he tells them and there's lots of crying). He's just constantly near tears over everything at this point. He doesn't understand why this happened or what's wrong with him that made somebody think he was a prime target for all of this.
(end of potentially triggering, touchy content)
⛈️ All anybody notices is that he starts to overwork himself in all aspects. When he graduates and gets a random diner job and he works as much as possible, in his free time he takes up odd jobs so that he can be working. He moves out from farm home so that he doesnt have to deal with the shame of literally All of It. All the failed connections he's had with other people, because it must mean He is a failed person and everyone must be able to sniff this out immediately.
He easily makes friends but cant sustain the relationships because he has to be working on something so he doesnt have to think about the mistreatment, or the ""assault"" (he doesnt treat it as something serious) or being alone, because what if he just finds someone else who treats him worse. He gets it now! He attracts people who will treat him badly. For some reason he's incapable of finding somebody who wont. And if he has nobody to take care of he has to focus that energy elsewhere to be worth anything to anyone. He works himself to unhealthy exhaustion. Always. Anything to not think about himself or any of it. Has a hard time maintaining his health around here bc he does not. Care. What happens to him. Talking to parents less and less, making them worry.
💘 (Suggestive in nature text incoming) he ends up actually having healthy!!! hook ups w ppl that enjoy his company and him as a person but he cant trust himself enough to pursue things further, thinking himself a omen of bad luck in love, further isolating.
⛅ He does eventually get past this \^_^/ and finds friends and people who help him take it easy and reassure him he is not worthless if he isn't working, that he can enjoy caring for others but its okay to be taken care of as well. He is very emotional still, and still gets very nervous about hurting others. He's very considerate to make extra sure he doesn't hurt others be it with his words or physically.
Like he wants to make sure nobody is treated the way he's been treated. He thinks he is a good person and is capable of being outwardly confident but he still struggles a lot with self worth after how he's been treated and tossed aside by very many people he thought cared about him. Despite him thinking he's had an easy life with 0 problems compared to everyone else the ppl who care ab him finally wrangle him into therapy for all this and he still struggles.
🎒 Also as things progress he realizes he would much rather be able to frequently help kids vs having any of his own, so he plans on going back and becoming some sort of grade school math teacher \^_^/ he is very good at math. Have not planned when this happens exactly. But its perfect for him, and it sort of heals him from his Bad Experience w Teacher as a child. Becomes the sort of teacher you still think about 20 yrs after but in the good way, as well as teacher who goes out of his way to help kids who are goinf thru difficult situations \^_^/ if one day i remove myself from his story i will write it in that he fosters/adopts children/teens with somebody he loves as well. ^_^
If you read all this THANK YU...sorry i write so much. Obvs al has other facets of personality and how he is as a person but this is more like. Loose backstory and hashtag plot or w.e. ^_^ i love my guyyy

What Can be Done About Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is often thought of as ‘C’ curves or ‘S’ curves in the spine. This is a 2- dimensional representation of the 3-dimensional shape of what is really happening.
Scoliosis is also thought to be a genetic predisposition. But lots of people whose parents and grandparents don’t have Scoliosis develop this problem. The predisposition is in the length of the spine plus the stability of the supporting structures of muscle tone. One can see why the development and discovery of Scoliosis is often during the growth spurt of the early teenage years.
Many people have the neuromuscular imbalances of a person with Scoliosis but they don’t develop the distinctive twisting and collapse of the spine. However, as we age the torques/rotations in our body result in a loss of height. Some of that is rotations and counter rotations in the spine, and the increased lordosis and kyphosis in the neck and rib cage. (for more information click here for what can be done)
Typically there has been some kind of incident or accident that impacted the spine often as a young child. Many of these incidents occur before or during the growth spurt of increased height/length during the transition from pubescence to adulthood when the bone growth outstrips the muscular strength to support them. An impact to the spine that contains a lateral force vector can disable one of the big muscles pulling on the T/L junction for instance. These muscles may end up in a chronic spasm on one side, resulting in predictable inhibitions in other complementary muscles. Now the spinal column is being pulled unevenly. Being engaged in competitive sports during this period of life has its dangers.
Torsions at one level of the spine affect other levels.
There are some logical transition points in rotational transitions, usually where the curves reverse: SubOccipitals, the Cervical/Thoraco junction, the Thoraco/Lumbar junction, and even the L5/S1 junction. Changing what appears to be the primary rotational injury is seldom the end of the story. All the rotations and counter rotations must be checked against one another. This is taught in Advanced NMR for Scoliosis, scheduled August 2023, in Dallas, TX.
These rotational preferences are stored in the Cerebellum as movement and postural support strategies and produce predictable consequences in weakness and instability in joints far from the spine.
Many years of living with these unequal tensions result in layers of compensation as the body seeks stability. The problem becomes more complicated/complex as the years go by and boney changes begin to develop.
Scoliosis requires a detailed untangling of rotational imbalances in the whole postural support system of the body. These changes in neuromuscular function can be accomplished at any age. Much of the pain that is associated with Scoliosis is neuromuscular in origin. The body gives us pain messages when the muscles are not coordinating well. Those pain messages are letting you know that something isn’t working right.
NeuroMuscular Reprogramming enables us to have a detailed conversation with the individual muscles impacting spinal support and movement, and to assist the body in reprogramming movement strategies for better support and stability.

Myopia Treatment plans
Hey Ya’ll!
I am excited to announce that Two C Eye Care in Manvel, Texas is equipped with technology that will predict if your child will develop myopia (nearsightedness = cannot see far away). In addition, there are FDA approved treatments to give your child the best outcome.
What is Myopia?
Myopia is a condition where the eye grows too fast and too long which results in nearsightedness, or the inability to see far away. The condition normally onsets around the age of 6. The condition may continue to worsen until adulthood. As the prescription progresses beyond -3.00 diopters, it doubles the risk for retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts and myopic macular degeneration. The condition is a global epidemic, and 44.8% of the united states population are myopic.
Causes
Myopia is caused by an excessive elongation of the eye. The trigger for elongation has been studied for the past 40 years, and disturbance in visual input was found to be the trigger for excessive elongation of the eye. New treatment restores this visual disturbance to slow down the elongation of the eye.
Risk Factors
Not having enough outdoor exposure
Too much near work such as reading and computer work
Family History
Both parents are nearsighted = 50% chance of developing nearsightedness
One parent is nearsighted = 33% chance of developing nearsightedness
Either parent are nearsighted = 25% of developing nearsightedness
Signs and Symptoms
Blurry vision when looking at distant objects (e.g., front of a classroom, TV, street signs)
Squinting or partially closing the eyelids to see clearly, especially at a distance
Difficulty seeing while driving a vehicle, especially at night
Holding books or devices very close while reading
Headaches caused by excessive eyestrain
Excessive blinking and/or rubbing eyes frequently from eyestrain
Treatment
I am fortunate to be certified in many FDA approved treatment options for your child. There are two treatment options available for your child which includes specially designed soft contact lens (MiSight by Coopervision) and Orthokeratology(Abiliti by Johnson and Johnson). The treatment option will be chosen based on your child’s clinical findings. The treatment slows down the growth in hopes to halt or stop myopia. The goal of the treatment is to prevent your child from progressing to a -3.00 diopter in prescription. As mentioned above, once your child progresses to a -3.00 diopter in prescription or above, their risk for glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy increases two times. If your child increases beyond -3.00 diopters, the risk increases the more your child progresses beyond -3.00.
Conclusion
The take away of this blog is that there is now TECHNOLOGY to predict whether your child will progress to develop nearsightedness BEFORE it happens. And, there is now FDA APPROVED TREATMENT to manage myopia!! Our optometrist office in Manvel, TX has technology to predict the nearsightedness, and our team is fully trained to treat your child’s nearsightedness. I want to start this campaign in the great community of Manvel, TX called #STOPMYOPIA. From a public health standpoint, I want to educate my community in Manvel, TX on this condition and new treatments available. There is more of a reason for you to bring your child in for an eye examination whether your child sees good, or not. Another take away is if both parents are nearsighted, there is a 50% chance of your child developing myopia, if only one parent is nearsighted, there is a 33% chance of your child developing myopia, and if no parents are nearsighted, there is a 25% chance of your child developing myopia.

Is it part of orthodontic care to extract wisdom teeth?
Tumblr media
In the realm of orthodontic care, the question of whether extracting wisdom teeth is a standard practice is a topic of interest and often confusion. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge in late adolescence or early adulthood. These teeth can be a source of concern due to their potential impact on dental alignment and overall oral health. In this comprehensive article, we will address the role of wisdom teeth in orthodontic care, the reasons behind their extraction, and the considerations that come into play when making this decision.
The Role of Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the final set of molars that typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. These teeth were once essential for our ancestors who had a diet that required more chewing power. However, with the evolution of our diet and oral health practices, these teeth have become less necessary. As a result, not everyone develops wisdom teeth, and in many cases, they may not fully erupt.
Potential Issues with Wisdom Teeth
When wisdom teeth do emerge, they can lead to various dental concerns, including:
1. Crowding: Wisdom teeth can cause overcrowding in the mouth. This can disrupt the alignment of existing teeth, leading to orthodontic issues that may require correction.
2. Impaction: Wisdom teeth often don't have enough space to emerge properly, causing them to become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth.
3. Difficulty in Cleaning: Due to their location at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be challenging to clean effectively. This makes them more susceptible to decay and gum disease.
4. Alignment Issues: Wisdom teeth can exert pressure on neighboring teeth, pushing them out of alignment and affecting the results of orthodontic treatments.
Orthodontic Considerations
In orthodontic care, the presence of wisdom teeth is carefully evaluated. Orthodontists in Pearland, TX consider several factors when deciding whether or not to extract these teeth:
1. Alignment: If wisdom teeth are likely to disrupt the alignment of existing teeth or compromise the results of orthodontic treatment, extraction may be recommended.
2. Impaction: Impacted wisdom teeth are often extracted to prevent pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth.
3. Oral Health: The overall impact of wisdom teeth on oral health, including the risk of decay and gum disease, is considered.
4. Individual Cases: Each patient is unique, and decisions about wisdom tooth extraction are made on a case-by-case basis. Not everyone will require wisdom tooth removal as part of their orthodontic care.
The Decision to Extract Wisdom Teeth
Ultimately, the decision to extract wisdom teeth as part of orthodontic care depends on individual circumstances. It is essential to consult with an orthodontist who can assess your specific case, taking into account your oral health, the alignment of your teeth, and the potential impact of wisdom teeth on your overall orthodontic treatment.
In conclusion, while the extraction of wisdom teeth can be a part of orthodontic care, it is not a universal practice. The decision is made based on individual factors and the potential impact of these teeth on alignment and oral health. If you are considering orthodontic treatment or have concerns about your wisdom teeth, consult with an orthodontist who can provide personalized guidance and recommendations.

Despite the hardships in Dr Klungo's life he has still risen to the top in the scientific community even getting the Nobel prize for one of the articles he wrote about that pretty much improved healthcare in tending to wounds.
Before he founded dragon masters technology he was once affiliated with the school however he got second thoughts about the school after seeing what Larkoris went through he decided that this was enough and on the night he quit at the school he used this opportunity to get Larkoris out by successfully sneaking him out.
And to spite Elizabeth he even built both his hq and his lab in Hurricane Utah and began setting his plan in motion. Klungo eventually did settle down and get married and had 3 bio kids. After the birth of his youngest bio child his wife got cancer and tragically passed away. He still kept on with his mission.
Years later there was a young homeless scorcher he found while he was on his way home. When he found out why the young one was on the run it was because of his abusive parents. Immediately Dr Klungo contacted the authorities and was able to adopt the young scorcher who we know as Talendor.
Sadly these days the only children of his that he sees is Larkoris, Talendor, and Dr Fredrick Klungo Jr. His other children moved after reaching adulthood. Bulldozer works as a police officer in Dallas TX while Max Sr moved to Finland.

Joint Health across the Lifespan: Orthopedic Insights for All Ages
Maintaining joint health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, enabling individuals to lead active and fulfilling lives. From the first steps of infancy to the golden years of seniority, orthopedic insights play a pivotal role in promoting strong and functional joints. In this article, we will explore the significance of joint health across different age groups and discuss orthopedic interventions to ensure a lifetime of pain-free movement. Additionally, we will shed light on the expertise available in Orthopedics in McAllen, TX, and how it contributes to enhancing joint health across all ages.
Childhood and Adolescence
The foundation for lifelong joint health is laid during childhood and adolescence. As youngsters grow, their bones, muscles, and joints undergo significant changes. It's crucial to encourage physical activity and exercise to promote the development of healthy joints. Engaging in sports and activities that focus on balance, coordination, and strength can aid in proper joint alignment and reduce the risk of injuries. Orthopedic specialists often emphasize preventive strategies to address growth-related issues and teach proper body mechanics to young individuals, ensuring that they cultivate healthy joint habits early on.
Young Adulthood
In the prime of young adulthood, individuals are often highly active, participating in various physical activities, sports, and recreational pursuits. However, the enthusiasm for physical exertion can sometimes lead to overuse injuries or accidents. Orthopedic guidance becomes essential in this phase, offering insights into injury prevention, proper warm-up and cool-down routines, and techniques to avoid straining joints. By maintaining a balance between physical activity and rest, individuals can minimize the risk of joint deterioration in later years. Orthopedics in McAllen, TX, provides specialized care for sports-related injuries, offering tailored treatment plans that consider the patient's age, activity level, and overall health.
Middle Age
As individuals progress into middle age, joint health takes on added significance. The wear and tear accumulated over the years can start to manifest as joint pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. Orthopedic specialists play a crucial role in diagnosing and treating conditions such as osteoarthritis, which commonly affects weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips. Through a combination of non-surgical interventions like physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle adjustments, individuals can manage pain and maintain joint function. In cases where surgical intervention is necessary, advances in orthopedic surgery techniques ensure minimal invasiveness and quicker recovery times.
Senior Years
Advancing age often brings challenges to joint health, making the expertise of orthopedic specialists invaluable for seniors. Conditions like osteoporosis and fractures become more common, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach that considers bone density, nutrition, and fall prevention strategies. Orthopedics in McAllen, TX, offers comprehensive geriatric orthopedic care, helping seniors navigate joint-related concerns and age gracefully. Joint replacement surgeries, such as hip and knee replacements, have transformed the lives of countless older adults, restoring mobility and improving their overall quality of life.
Holistic Approach to Joint Health
Across all age groups, a holistic approach to joint health emerges as a consistent theme. Orthopedic insights encompass not only the physical aspects of joint care but also the psychological and emotional dimensions. Integrating factors like mental well-being, stress reduction, and proper nutrition into joint health management can have far-reaching positive effects. Additionally, orthopedic specialists emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight to reduce unnecessary strain on joints and the adoption of ergonomic practices to prevent work-related joint issues.

Pax
Name: Pax De Gallo
Age: 16
Type: Demigod/half-titan, legacy, magician.
Father: Kronos/ Chronos
Mother: Aelia De Gallo (Legacy of Pluto (through M. Junius Brutus), Aesculapius (through C. Cassius Longinus), and Janus ( through Portia Catonus)), Magician (through grandfather; and descendant of Pharaoh Djet)
Bio:
Pax was cursed mute by the fates when they were born, because they were too powerful. They grew up with their mother, maternal grandparents, and the two family lares (family ancestors), Marcus Junius Brutus, and Gaius Cassius Longinus in El Paso, TX. They were eight when their mother died defending them from a monster. By the age of 10, both their grandparents also died attempting to protect them from monsters, and they were put into the foster system. After two more run-ins with monsters, Pax decided no more, and started running away from foster homes. Eventually, in a desperate hope, Marcus and Gaius sent them to Camp Jupiter in hope that it could protect them.
Unfortunately, because Pax is the legacy of the two assassins of Julius Caesar, they were not trusted, and put in the 5th cohort. They never felt at ease at Camp Jupiter, feeling like the ground itself was hostile to them, and ran away after only a year at the camp at the suggestion of Juno (although later only remembered as 'The Warner') to head east.
As they headed east, Juno began to slowly erase their memories of Camp Jupiter and who their "Abuelos" were. Eventually, one of the Satyrs of Camp Half-blood found them and took them to the camp, where they stayed with Hermes Cabin. Within a year of them arriving at Camp, they participated in the battle of Manhattan, defending Olympus from Kronos. They were fourteen at this time.
The night they celebrated their victory over Kronos, two things happened:
Kronos claimed them as his child.
The oracle of Delphi gave another prophecy through Rachel:
Child of Time you hold the key to keep the peace of a failed decree Nine in total each a lore the faces of reality at the brink of war An uphill battle with foes allied Impending doom when worlds collide
That night, in a dream, Hera told them they must head east and find the last of their mother's family. There they would start to learn about the other faces of reality.
And so begins their quest.
Abilities:
Time travel: can move forward or backward in time, although it often leaves them exhausted, or can even make them pass out if they try to go back more than two centuries.
Time manipulation: They can speed up or slow down time for the world around them.
They can see the timeline of anything they touch, even other people.
Shadow travel (legacy of Pluto/ Kronos ability): They can shadow travel, although traveling far can exhaust them, and if they travel travel too many times, they start to fade into shadow.
They have minor healing abilities (legacy of Aesculapius)
Duat storage: They can store their items in the duat.
They are host to Khmun, the egyptian god of the oasis
Inventory:
Leather cuff with a silver slightly convex disc on it. A depiction of a woman wearing a tunic and stola adorns it. in one hand, she holds up a dagger. In one hand she holds out a conical hat, in the other is a lituus (j-shaped trumpet). There is a ceremonial jug at her feet, and a dagger hangs at her waist. When the disc is turned, it turns into a large circular shield.
pendant with a small black metal coin on it. On one side it says eid mar with two daggers and a conical hat. on the other it has a gladius crossed with the lituus. One side materializes into a dagger, the other into a sword.
armillary sphere ring.
ivory wand
Spock figurine
Lore:
The Junii et Casii are cursed such that only one child survives into adulthood, and they only ever have girls. They also have chronic bad luck.
Pax calls the lares "Avus Gaius" and "Avus Marcus" (Avus meaning Grandfather).
They are fluent in English, Spanish, Turkish, Ottoman turkish, Latin, Greek, ASL, LSM, Ottoman court sign language, Ladino, Hebrew, Ancient Egyptian, and Klingon.
Pax is an honorary guest of cabin 2 at Camp Half-blood
They are not allowed within 100 miles of the empire state building because Zeus does not trust them.
Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Hermes, and Hestia are on Pax's side and will sometimes try to help them.
They have a pet Pharaoh's Chicken (Vulture) named Ash.

Writerly Wednesday: My Speculative Universe Manual
Hello, gentle ones, This would normally be a Writerly Wednesday post, but I have another plan for that. Recently, a reader @damnitmyradio, asked for details on the speculative universe where I have stuck my current characters. I ended up writing three full boxes of information. But, I also promised to post to the general public, so I'll try to cut that down. Here we go: TIME PERIOD: Future, no specific date but after 2020s The U.S.A. has split in half. Alaska and Hawaii peaced out after years of the Lower 48's assorted crap; they no longer give a hoot. The other 48 are split into the New American States (NAS) and the Independent States of America (ISA). This split is in no way political as we know it (your current red/blue/purple states have no bearing on this). Right now, the NAS has most of the East Coast, plus parts of OR, CA, TX, and all of D.C. The ISA has most of Middle America, parts of OR, CA, TX, etc. In the case of the really large states, you have a situation where, "On paper, we belong to this half, but that particular slice votes with the other half, and as long as they abide by the laws where the majority is, we leave them alone." (Still working out some kinks there. You ever try to split or redistrict a country that already exists? It's tough).
Stay tuned on this…it could be that I decide while a certain state “belongs” to one half of the country, certain cities or areas vote with or otherwise align with the other half, so they become “safe havens” for those who need them. The NSA is basically what you'd get if a bunch of your favorite dystopian novels all hooked up and spit out a really strange humanoid. So: THE GOOD NEWS:
-Ubiquitous technology ("there's an app for that" applies to almost EVERYTHING)
-Personalized clothing, food, leisure items, entertainment, tailored to you
-Climate control. The weather depends on where you live. You like beach weather? You can live in a summer district. More a fall person? We’ve got autumn districts, too! -Cashless society (you earn "purchase points" based on situations where you would earn actual money (e.g., work, allowance), and for positive social behavior -After core courses in K-8, education is very tailored to the individual students' interests, talents, and aspirations. -Medicine has evolved so that cures and effects are instant or nearly so for most ailments (cancer is still a thing, but can be cured in 1-6 weeks. AIDS, yes, but completely curable. Alzheimer's or dementia? A little more complex, but curable in a year or so. Disabilities like cerebral palsy, autism, blindness, deafness, and so forth are *very* different, though). -Foster kids are protected from abuse and guaranteed adoption, whereby their adoptive families commit to recognizing them as their children even into adulthood -Elderly are revered and cared for; because of medicine, many live to between 100 and 120, and the only reason there's a cap is because science hasn't "gotten there" yet -Veterans are lauded as heroes and given society's best in everything -Minorities are welcome and bigotry is mercilessly handled (in *most* cases) THE BAD NEWS: -Surveillance is EVERYWHERE -They use a system similar to "social scoring," whereby if you say something NAS doesn't like, or do something they don't like, you could get written up or worse -Minorities are treated badly (race of any kind is not expressed thanks to melanin reduction; we're all the same brownish-pinkish-whitish shade, although your genes will still "code" for your "original" color, so if you were born a certain race, they can still say that on the forms; religious and LGBTQ expression is monitored in every way possible other than banning; foster kids are forced to be government snitches; non-elderly or veteran people with disabilities are basically treated like garbage. You can't do anything outright, but microaggressions and the like? Oh-ho, yeah).
-This is a huge deal in my books: Disabilities cannot be cured because they’re all extremely heterogeneous. Therefore, at age 16, disabled kids are taken from their families and forced to live and work in Homes of Productivity and Equality (HOPE Houses). These look and act like swanky group homes, but the residents are treated as slave labor. Euthanasia doesn’t happen, but if they get injured or sick, they’re conveniently denied medical care. Those born disabled, or those who sustain disability from surviving illness or injury (combat excepted) are seen as the biggest obstacles to a Strong American Society. THE ISA: The Independent States are basically what you'd get if what we had now in the 2020s crossed with the neutral zone in The Man in the High Castle. It's not a terrible place to live, but people in the NAS think it's the boonies/end of the world. The border security on both sides is *tight* and *scary* (they don't need guards, they've got high-voltage fences and tech-enhanced mustard gas and who knows what else).
THE BAD NEWS: -You can't get a lot of the glitzy stuff from the NAS. You still have to do things like cook your own food, buy clothes off the rack, wait for new releases and new seasons and what have you. People from the NAS basically think you're some combination of Little House on the Prairie/Amish/a complete bonehead.
-No climate control; you’re stuck with the weather you got, pal. Similarly, they still do some factories and fossil fuels and stuff, so while pollution is way down, it still exists. -Minorities are welcome, BUT, bigotry happens more on the regular, and it can be harder to prove what happened/consequences to be enacted. You also still have things like abused foster kids, homeless vets, elderly in substandard nursing homes (not as crappy as they are now, I'll grant you, but when the standard is 100% personalized and cushy for everything, "crappy" can encompass a lot of stuff). -Your states or areas get blamed for any dystopian crap both halves of the country experience -Education, healthcare, and so on is still pretty good, but there's not as much money and not as many resources, so again, you get what's substandard, relative to what's considered "normal" THE GOOD NEWS: -Surveillance leaves you the heck alone. If you're being a decent human, there's no need to fear. The cops can't just show up and raid your house, take your kids, whatever. Nobody has a 3-inch file with every detail about you, a scan of your DNA, unless they truly need it (e.g., you have a legit high security job). -Along with that: Independence means independence. You’re disabled? Fine, we have accommodations, you don’t get “put away” at 16. You’re a Dark-skinned POC? WDYM, they made you take a melanin reducer, we don’t do that here! In fact, we can reverse that! They wrote you up or stuck you in jail/juvie for believing the Bible—or not? What is with those people in the other half of the country (???)
-Education is still individualized (the ISA starts tailoring at grade 9, too), but the ISA provides more room to explore, change your mind, what have you, whereas New America is more like The Giver, where you’re locked into one thing based on what an inventory says when you’re in high school
-Medicine won’t net you a centenarian life span, but risk of death from stuff like cancer is still much lower, and while cures are not “instant,” you will heal completely from most illnesses and injuries.
-You’re not completely tech-less. A lot of tech still works, such as tech-based mobility aids, school smart boards, certain forms of holograms, etc. What doesn’t, is the kind of stuff that feeds into instant gratification or over-personalization.
THE PLAGUE RECURRENCES:
As a refresher: The Plague Recurrences happened in both halves of the country. Essentially, terrorists went ham on bioterror and at various points through various years, you’d have major crops of diseases that had previously been contained or eradicated. Many people survived unscathed, but just as many others died and some were disabled. The first book in my series has a protagonist you’ll meet later who was born in New America, able-bodied, but caught meningitis in a Plague as a baby and became legally blind. Carlotta Murphy, whom you’ve met, was born able-bodied in the ISA and caught polio in one of their Plagues.
OTHER ADC (Assorted Dystopian Crap):
-Political upheaval (should we come back together or keep the split? Unionists vs. separatists fight like you would not believe) -Eugenicist controversies (“the disabled” get blamed for a lot of stuff the way the Nazis used to blame the Jews and other minorities, since, because of the Plagues, there are a lot more disabled people now, esp. in the ISA). -Infighting among disabled people (people who were born disabled or got diagnosed as babies or toddlers hold themselves “above” older survivors; survivors feel superior because they were abled once) -Spiritual warfare. I do write for the inspirational market, and I do touch on the theme of, losing hope and faith vs. keeping them. For instance, my protagonists are Christians and they do struggle with things like, “Jesus said He would come back, but He’s not here yet, the world’s getting worse, we’re disabled and the low girls on the food chain, where is He, anyway?” There’s also the overarching message of, YES, even when the world is a hellscape, disabled people have and deserve a place, we can be the heroes, we can kick some apocalyptic eugenicist and other assorted villain @!*&*.
-Possible top-level conspiracies (??? I’m not sure yet where this series is ultimately headed).

How To Have A Stress-Free Move To Houston, TX
Moving is stressful, but it doesn't have to be. If you follow these simple tips, your upcoming move to Houston will be stress-free and even enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Know your budget.
You can't move if you don't have the money, so know your budget and stick to it. Set a realistic figure for your moving expenses and don't spend more than that amount. If something costs more than what you planned on spending, then either try negotiating with the seller or wait until later when you have more funds available.
You should also keep in mind that when buying a house in Houston, TX make sure not to spend more than its value! This will ensure that there are no surprises later down the line when it comes time for repairs or renovations (which happen all too often).
Get an estimate.
The first step in planning your move is getting an estimate. A good estimate will help you determine how much money you need to save up before moving, which will make it easier for you to plan and budget for the big day.
Once you have an idea of how much everything is going to cost, consider whether or not it's possible for your current living situation (and income) in Houston. If so, great! You can start saving up now by cutting back on small expenses like eating out and buying new clothes on occasion instead of replacing old ones with worn out items from Goodwill stores--or whatever other ways people choose these days when deciding what they want their lives look like when they're done being poor college students/students who haven't yet graduated school but still want accesses certain luxuries that come with adulthood such as having friends over at least once every two weeks without feeling guilty about spending too much money on food/drinks because everyone knows alcohol makes everything better anyway so why not splurge while we can?
Pack yourself.
Packing yourself is the easiest way to ensure that you don't forget anything. It also saves money, since you won't need to pay someone else to pack your things for you. You can even save on shipping costs by using a moving truck or trailer, if available in your area (some rental companies offer these).
Here's what I recommend packing:
Clothes - Pack all of your clothes into suitcases or duffels, and then put those suitcases/duffels into large plastic bins for extra protection during transit. If possible, use clear plastic bins so that someone else can easily see what's inside without having to open them up! If this isn't possible (or affordable), go with black ones instead--they tend not as much light leakage through them as other colors do.* Shoes - Pack each pair individually inside its own shoe box so they don't get mixed up with each other during transit.* Kitchen supplies - Make sure these are packed securely in sturdy containers such as Tupperware containers or Ziploc bags.* Toiletries - Include all kinds here: toothbrushes/toothpaste/mouthwash; shampoo/conditioner; shaving cream; lotion... whatever seems necessary!
Be organized and leave a detailed note.
Organization is the key to a stress-free move. Make a list of items you want to take with you, and then make another list of items that can be left behind. If there are any important documents or personal items, consider storing them with friends or family members who live nearby.
Make sure that everyone knows where they can reach you in case they need anything during this big transition period! Leave detailed notes on both your new and old addresses (including phone numbers), plus email addresses if possible; don't forget any other pertinent information like birthdays or anniversaries!
Have a moving buddy or two.
Moving is a stressful process, no matter where you're moving to or from. You'll have to pack up all of your belongings, find a way to transport them and then unpack them once they arrive at their destination. It's also important not to forget about the cost of hiring movers as well as any fees associated with having them do so (like fuel costs).
If you don't have any friends or family members who can help out during this time, consider hiring professionals instead! Movers in Houston TX are available 24/7 so there's no reason why anyone should have an excuse for not getting things done quickly enough before their move date arrives..
Get a good mattress protector to keep your mattress clean and protected.
A mattress protector is a thin, waterproof layer that sits over your mattress to protect it from dirt and stains. It also helps keep allergens like dust mites at bay.
While sleeping on an old, soiled mattress can be uncomfortable enough, imagine all the things that could go wrong if you were moving while still lying on top of it: ripping off the new sheets you just bought because they're caught in between two mattresses; spilling something onto your brand-new mattress before even having had time to set up house; getting blood stains from carrying heavy boxes across town (or country). These are just some examples of how damaging an improperly-protected bed can be during a move!
The best kind of protector is one that has multiple layers--a waterproof outer layer with another layer inside made out of soft fleece fabric for added comfort and warmth at night when temperatures drop down into single digits outside! And remember: always make sure there's enough room between whatever surface you're moving across (be it carpeting) so nothing gets stuck underneath as well!

"With the highly anticipated new album PURGE, Godflesh revisits and updates the concepts of PURE (1992), as well as bringing a whole host of new dirges and laments. Amongst the many layers of dirt, PURGE mangles 90s hip hop grooves and puts them through the Godflesh filter to create something futuristic in style - and utterly unique.
Both minimal and maximal, Godflesh deliver alien grooves that swing whilst also retaining the psychedelic, bad trip edge with layer upon layer of filth and heaviness - that Godflesh have always been known for. This is, and always has been, feel-bad music.
The title alone - PURGE - references directly how songwriter and creator Justin K. Broadrick utilises Godflesh's music as a temporary relief from his diagnosed autism and PTSD. It's the next stage in a journey he has been on since he began creating music, feeling alone and like an outsider in any scene or group, from childhood through to adulthood.
The music of Godflesh gives Broadrick the means to express a lifetime of feeling misunderstood and overwhelmed by hyper-sensitivity. The band is the vehicle to provide some sense of catharsis and transcendence; a way of communicating overload, as well as the constant disenchantment at the human condition, and man's abuse of power and the systems that chain us.
PURGE references the cycle of horror that man always has and always will put us through; those in positions of power revel in the infliction of pain and horror upon individuals - in the name of their religion, their power, their money, their flags..."

How to Manage Fears After Mass Violence
Tumblr media
The recent shootings in Uvalde and Buffalo have put most (if not all) quarterlifers on edge. These 20- and 30-somethings are right on the cusp – either reeling from their own experiences of shootings in their childhood or fretting about their young children’s safety in public spaces. Managing fear, anxiety, and difficult conversations after incidences of mass violence isn’t something they give adults instructions for. Here’s our best guide on how to cope if you’re feeling especially worried these days.
The Rise of Mass Shootings
A mass shooting is an incident involving several victims of firearm-related violence. Over the past 25 years, hundreds of mass shootings have occurred, which only contribute to young adults’ general sense of anxiety and instability. Today’s young adults (Millennials and Gen Z-ers) grew up in a world where safety wasn’t guaranteed in schools, grocery stores, concerts, movie theaters, and other public spaces.
Here’s a list of just a fraction of the mass shootings that have occurred over the last 25 years.
Columbine High School (1999)
Virginia Tech (2007)
Binghamton (2009)
Foot Hood (2009)
Aurora Theater (2012)
Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT (2012)
Washington Navy Yard (2013)
San Bernadino (2015)
Orlando Pulse Nightclub (2016)
Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas (2017)
Texas First Baptist Church (2017)
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL (2018)
Thousand Oaks Nightclub (2018)
El Paso Walmart (2019)
Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX (2022)
In 2022 alone, there have been 300 mass shootings so far. These instances of violence can be especially difficult for a generation who has grown up fearing these occurrences in their communities. Now, even in young adulthood, the rate of mass shootings has continued to rise. The children of this generation have grown into adults — some with their own children, who have questions about the shootings..
5 Strategies to Manage Your Fear and Anxiety
1. Acknowledge your anxiety
It is normal to feel fear and anxiety following a traumatic event. Acknowledge your fear, but don’t allow it to consume you.
2. Connect with others
Fear can make you feel isolated and alone, which in turn, heightens the fear. Reach out to others to let them know how you’re feeling and to see how they’re doing. This can help you both feel supported and understood.
3. Avoid triggers
Triggers are things that can cause your fear and anxiety to increase. By temporarily avoiding triggers, you can help to minimize the fear and anxiety that you’re experiencing. Common triggers following mass violence events include:
News about the event
Images or videos of the event
Sensory reminders of the event (sounds, smells, etc.)
People who were at the event
Conversations about the event
You may also find that you’re nervous in spaces that are like those of the mass violence event. For instance, maybe you’re not comfortable going to the movies right now, or you prefer to do online grocery pickup instead of shopping in person. It’s not always possible to avoid every trigger but planning and avoiding the ones you can is a good temporary solution.
4. Prepare and support your family
Following the Uvalde shooting, many young parents began to fear the worst about what their children would encounter in school. Searches like “how to talk to kids about school shootings” and “tips on navigating tough conversations with kids about school shootings” were trending on Google.
While it’s a horrifying reality that parents have to talk to their young child about such violence, preparing those in your household can make you feel more prepared if there is such an event in the future. Here are a few tips you can use.
Remember that you serve as your child’s emotional stability — turn down the volume on your own reactions so you can listen to your child’s concerns calmly.
Determine whether your child is aware of the event.
Talk about the event and the impact that the event has had on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Provide routines so your child has a sense of predictability and control.
5. Seek professional help
If your fear is still impacting your functioning weeks after an event, consider seeking professional help. Therapy can help you to understand and manage your anxiety in a way that doesn’t interfere with how you live.
Visit the Quarterlife Center for more information on individual counseling after mass violence events.
