#ty to carolina for the song
Text
.
#I think if she made Carolina a bonus track on folklore the fan reception would have been different#it would’ve been similar to tolerate it in that she mentioned the book by name and as a source of inspiration and that would be that#I think the main issue is that it’s not just a song she wrote for an album but is deliberately tied to the film#I know that the book was and is still incredibly popular and sadly I hadn’t heard about the author’s history before T got involved#I think if more people were aware of the author’s actions the book wouldn’t have had the same success or even gotten published#I think it was a case of someone recommending the book to her and her reading it and connecting to it#I can’t blame her for reading and being inspired and not knowing since I didn’t know about the author#I can understand why/how she felt connected to Kya after the events of 2016 and get that she felt inspired#I’d like to think that if she was aware of the author’s past that she wouldn’t intentionally get involved but who knows#I think the issue is that she made a choice to tie herself to it instead of just being inspired#and when she made that decision she should’ve looked at the author’s history and re-evaluated it#and fans calling out her hypocritical behavior/projects she’s been involved with recently is valid and necessary#with her tying herself directly to the film it boosts the author’s platform although it has been an incredibly popular book since release#I do think Taylor needs to get better with actually following through with what she says/supports and that this was a misstep#but the author getting published in the first place is on the publishers and a whole different discussion#I said it once but I feel like anyone could’ve written the story with the same main themes but w/out the influence of the author’s racism#you can’t really separate the song from the book/movie unless you’re like unaware and hear it with no prior context#I understand why some people aren’t engaging with it because of the bad taste it leaves in their mouths#I don’t think that any money from streams or anything goes to the author/film but to Taylor#but again it boosts the author’s profile/book when it shouldn’t#didn’t want to wade into this discussion until today with everything happening yesterday#did this in the tags because it would’ve been a long post if not

TY Gina! Your whole explanation about the pitting the boys’ solo careers against each other was so helpful. I’m curious what you meant when you said “and then there was a whole faction of people who flipped out over Harry’s lyrics and image not meeting their expectations.” I wasn’t a Harry fan then. Why did fans not like HS1?
Hi sweetheart. Hm. It’s kind of a difficult question to answer because it was really layered and everyone had their own reasons. But my memory of it was that starting at some point in 2015 people thought Irving Azoff was going to sign the band as a whole, and “save” them from Sony. So there was a lot of anger and disappointment when it became clear that it was only Harry the Azoffs were interested in.
Then you have to also factor in that babygate was in full swing in 2016, and we had Louis with his new beard (Danielle), so he was being photographed constantly and he looked exhausted and miserable more often than not. Meanwhile what we were seeing from H was yachting with Kendall and filming Dunkirk. So there was growing resentment about Harry’s perceived life vs Louis’ perceived life. Then Jay died and we learned she’d been sick most of the year while Louis was having to be in the US constantly papped with Danielle and Freddie. And then Louis performed JHO on X Factor and did the promo for it with Steve Aoki (which made it very clear that the only promo that was happening was due to Steve’s team and not Syco/SJPR). Then the teaser for HS1 dropped and it was clear where Sony’s interest lay — Harry was everywhere and every piece of media hailed him as the second coming of Bowie and Jagger. In addition, we got a big het Harry push where the album was linked to Kendall, T*ylor, and Townes. I say all of this to try and give you an idea of where people were at when the album dropped. There was so much anger about what was happening to Louis, and many who thought they’d broken up transferred their frustration into being angry at Harry.
Then the lyrics dropped and some people got very upset at songs like Only Angel (for being “misogynistic”, Carolina (for being a stunt song linked to Townes), and Kiwi (especially the line about “hard candy dripping on me till my feet are wet” After which someone started a rumor about Harry writing a song about underage girls).
So, yeah. It wasn’t that fans didn’t like HS1. But the split between larries, harries, and louies was getting wider. And those who didn’t decided that they no longer liked Harry generally seemed to have had a preconceived notion of how his solo rollout would go and what his solo music would be, and the reality didn’t match what they wanted.
Again, sorry this is long. It’s really hard to sum this sort of thing up, and this only scratches the surface, but I hope this helps a bit.

I really thought that I would be lonely, moving out to the middle of nowhere to live in the woods far away from all my friends, but I've actually never felt less lonely or more part of a community
Even aside from my dogs-- with whom I have both individual relationships and group dynamics every bit as complex and nuanced and rewarding as any human group I've ever been a part of-- there's no dearth of social interaction in my day. The wasps, who drink droplets of sugar water off my fingers when I'm feeling indulgent, know me and follow me around buzzing hopefully but never sting me even when I poke curiously around their nest. The mice recognize my face and will continue on with their business unafraid when I pass by, but scatter in frantic terror when they see the co-farmer (who catches them with her hands and feeds them to Breq the dog). The red-tailed hawks who live a little ways down the street have been mated for many years and I frequently see them wheeling and diving though the sky together, delighting in each other's company like newlyweds, and fucking each other with great gusto on tree branches. I know a few individual members of the local coyote pack-- the massive coydog who lingers at the foot o the mountain and watches us every night with a strange intensity, the dumbass teen yote with a hopeless crush on Breq who keeps tying to bring her dead rabbits.
I know which songbirds are shy and will only sing if I hide somewhere and sit very still (northern flicker, hermit thrush) and which birds are outgoing and will sit in a branch and yell two feet from my face (cardinals and blue jays and carolina wrens), and I can tell by the warning in their songs when it's about to start raining with enough time to duck under shelter before I feel the first drops. I can in general tell the weather and the temperature and the time of day and what other animals are nearby by listening to the birds narrate their daily affairs; they're very talkative and VERY specific. I know the cardinal who lives in the tree by the mailbox is beefing with the carolina wren who lives in the tree by the laundry line, because I eavesdrop on them having a screaming argument over territory every morning, and this morning I listened to the carolina wren get catfished by a mockingbird mimicking the courtship call of a hot eligible carolina wren bachelor. When the mockingbird abruptly stopped dueting and ghosted her she left, dejected, & her cardinal nemesis immediately launched into an obnoxious frat-bro-esque victory cheer at her departure.
I'm leaning heavily on anthropomorphism here, which is exactly what I was taught not to do when training and working as a biologist, and I am partially doing it just to illustrate my point. But also, as every field biologist ever will tell you, it's kind of impossible to spend a lot of time observing an ecosystem and not notice how much human society is not unique from every other living thing.

Episode 1.7 Review: Keefe is in love, Scotty is ___, and Eli is willing to have sex with a man.
In Episode 1.6, after the blackmail plot fell through, Gideon and Scotty came up with a plan to steal the $3,000,000 in offerings that the church receives during the Easter service.  Gideon had doubts, but then Scotty showed up at his parents' house, pretending to be a friend visiting from California!
Tumblr media
Prayer Power: A flashback to the Prayer Power Convention in Atlanta.  Gideon comes into the hotel room, upset: he was planning to have dinner with his Dad, but Jesse ditched him to play drinking games with his crew.  Jesse insults him, ridicules his upcoming internship and "California dreams," and orders him out.  On the way, Gideon sets his camera to take the video he would use for blackmailing.  So he didn't run away; the family knew that he had an intership set up. Why did Jesse act as if it was a big mystery.
Gideon the soul-winner: In the present, Scotty is having dinner with the family.  He explains that he came to South Carolina for a stunt job, but he "got banged up" and had to drop out. Then he says that he came to see Gideon, who brought him to Christ. The family is so overjoyed that the "prodigal son" has become a soul-winner that no one notices the contradictions.
Uh-oh, Jesse recognizes Scotty from somewhere!  His cover is almost blown, but Scotty claims that he had a recurring role as a rapist on CSI Miami.  Rapist -- interesting choice, since CSI is about murder (you gather forensic evidence from the crime scene).  Scotty is painting himself as a sexual predator.  I wonder if Gideon is his latest victim.
Amber insists that he stay with them. Gideon protests, but Scotty touches his hand, and he consents.  So, Scotty, do you want a guest room, or would you prefer to share Gideon's bed?
We cut to a scene of Eli giving the siblings their Easter assignments; Judy will sing during the collection, Jesse will preach the sermon, and Kelvin has to lead a youth group song and dance number, which angers him (he's the youth minister; what did he expect?)
Shirt on, shirt off:  In the morning, Scotty and Gideon stop at the security station on their way out of the compound.  Hey, Scotty has his arm on Gideon's shoulder.   Everybody who sees them will think that they are a romantic couple.   Scotty flirts with security guard  Brock: "If you get to L.A., I'll get you an agent."  But he needs head shots, shirtless shots, and so on.  This is way more than Scotty needs to get access to the compound.  He just wants to see Brock naked.
I'm gonna be ____: Cut to the guys having dinner (score: three dinners for Scotty/Gideon, none for Kelvin/Keefe).  They discuss the plan: on Sunday morning, after the offering is counted, Gideon and Martin will take it down the service elevator to the vault.  Scotty will be waiting, wearing his devil's mak, and rob them.  How will he get out of the church, with thousands of people milling about?
"As soon as the elevator door opens," he promises, "I'm gonna be ____."
"Nothing too big," Gideon cautions.  He can't help his size, dude.
To make it believable and not implicate Gideon, Scotty suggests tying him up, and using a few P-whips. This term is not defined online.  Could it mean penis-whip?
Scotty has more news: He got the sex tape fixed, so he can do the original blackmail plan in addition to robbing the church. "This is what you always wanted," he says. "We destroy your old man."  Gideon is not so sure that he wants Jesse destroyed.
Tell TJ to walk out: Cut to Judy announcing to Baby Billy that they will be performing during the Easter service. But Baby Billy doesn't want to: "too little, too late."  BJ protests, and Billy orders him to leave.  Judy agrees: "You're making me look like an idiot.  Go outside!"  Uh-oh, disrespecting your boyfriend.  Since the Kelvin/Keefe plot runs parallel, we should be expecting some discord in their relationship soon.
Billy continues: "Your Daddy is a fame whore.  He'd [have sex with a man] in the middle of town square if he thought it would make him famous forever. He'd [have sex with ten men]."  Being outed as gay or bi is the most embarrassing thing Billy can think of. This may suggest a general attitude of homophobia that will make Kelvin's coming out difficult.
Part of the Family: Jesse takes everyone  out on his yacht.  Scotty complements the family on how close they are. His own dad is in prison.  Jesse offers to be his Daddy, and hugs him.  Eli never once hugged Keefe.  Of course, it's just an act; Scotty waggles his tongue at Gideon over Jesse's shoulder, a vulgar gesture similar to what Keefe experienced at the sports bar.
Or is it all an act?  Scotty seems to like being part of the family
The Prayer Circle: Just before the Easter service (17,000 people in the Salvation Center, six million world wide), Eli, the siblings, their partners, and Martin have a prayer circle, Kelvin/Keefe are holding hands and praying.  Scotty is holding Keefe's hand and glaring.  Why isn't he standing next to Gideon, his "friend"?
I Have to Be a Man:  We see a few moments of Levi's Christian rock number, then switch to Kelvin leading the teens in their song-and-dance.    Keefe, working security in the bleachers, seems to be making an "I love you" gesture.
Meanwhile, Gideon is in the bathroom, throwing up, and Judy rejects Eli's offer of singing during the offertory.
Cut to Judy's dressing room.  She criticizes BJ for asking if she's ok.  He counters that he is not even religious, but he has always been there for her.  She continues to berate him for attempting emotional support until he's had enough and leaves: "I have to stand up for myself.  I have to be a man." He starts crying and runs away. Judy throws her engagement ring after him.  .
"What is a man?" is an ongoing question of the season.  It was discussed in Gideon's "welcome home" dinner.  Kelvin declares that he is "a man" frequently.  The definitions are contradictory: being muscular; controlling your emotions; being in charge; standing up for yourself; being heterosexual.
My Gay Son: While the opening numbers are going on upstairs, Gideon decides to "come clean."  Except Jesse thinks he means being gay, and exclaims "I love my gay son."  Before Gideon has a chance to respond, Martin drags him away.  There has been no indication to this point (or ever during the series) that Gideon is straight.  Maybe viewers are supposed to conclude that he actually is gay, thus drawing attention from Kelvin and Keefe.
Cut to Jesse's sermon: We hear a lot about Christ's suffering, but what about the suffering of Judas?  Most people think that he was driven by evil, "perhaps guided by the devil himself," but maybe he was driven by pain. Imagine his agony, knowing that he had betrayed his friends and loved ones.
The most obvious parallel here is Gideon betraying his Dad, guided by Scotty (wearing his Devil mask), driven by pain rather than evil.  But what about Scotty? Isn't he betraying his friend by forcing him to participate in this wild robbery scheme?
Feeling guilty, Gideon decides to back out of the plot; he ditches Martin and the money, and goes down the service elevator alone to explain.  Scotty is irate, and starts insulting him.  Gideon has had enough of his abuse..  They fight.  Scotty puts him in a sleeper hold saying "Go to sleep, you little cute cock sucker." Interesting choice of words.  If he just said "cock sucker," it might be an all-purpose slur, but adding "little" and "cute" implies that the two have actually had oral sex.
Gideon eventually manages to best Scotty and walk away, calling him a fraud.  Scotty pulls a gun, but can't bring himself to shoot him.
Next: Episode 1.7 Review, Continued: A bisexual fish, Thai brothers, and Scotty with a broken heart. With Thai guy bonus.

burning house (jake “hangman” seresin)
a/n: i don’t know if anyone will read this, or even like this. this story is inspired by two different book series, romeo and juliet, bonnie and clyde, a costume the dance moms girls wore in season 7, a clip of sytycd’s old west opening number recently, rango, holes/kissin’ kate barlow, and a fleetwood mac song. it’s got so many elements of other things to create something so entirely unique. hollywood could never. my advisors would be disappointed in me, for two wildly different reasons. this story plays into almost every stereotype about the old west, ones i know as a history major to be inaccurate. but the heart wants what it wants and this is what i wanted. it’s my passion project and my sister is tired of hearing me talk about it. this may at some point get moved to just ao3, as i’m afraid it will be too dark for tumblr, but i’m posting the first part here to see how it fares.
serious note: this story is going to contain descriptions of violence, murder, gun fights, a massive fire, sex and seduction, references of rape, and prostitution and brothels in the 1800′s. it’s a much darker take on the old western movies. one of my advisors is a scholar on the old west and he and i have discussed at length brothels and prostitution in the old west. it’s the only historically accurate part of this story. this is going to be a good story but it will be a dark one. therefore, it’s best to say that this has a Mature audience rating and I’m going to be keeping a closer eye on who interacts with it. cool? cool.
summary: Hangman is a cowboy known around the West for the way he leaves those who cross him. He wanders into a town at sundown, weary from long travels. The sheriff’s son, Coyote, an up-and-coming cowboy in his own right, offers him respite. Carolina, one of the town’s notorious prostitutes, makes a move on Hangman, but, much to her dismay, is turned away. Hangman is warned away by Coyote, citing that Carolina will bring nothing but trouble. Hangman likes trouble, seeks it out, but he knows that Carolina is not the trouble he’s looking for. For Carolina, Hangman is exactly the trouble she has been looking for. (one more time this has a Mature audience rating I’m serious)

warnings: old west/cowboy!au, fire/mentions of people dying from fire, brief description of injuries from fire, prositution and brothels, accusations of rape but nothing graphic just mentions that it happened, discussion of seducation, brief mention of nudity, Hangman earns his name for a different reason, discussion of hanging people as punishment, mentions of a gun/firing a gun but no one is harmed, sporting women and soiled doves are another word from the 1800′s used to refer to prostitutes, mature audience rating i’m serious

The dust blew around Hangman’s body as the sun set in the distance. He kept his head low to keep from the dust getting into his face, his horse moving slowly as he made his way into the town. The loud cheers from the saloon brought a certain familiarity, all saloons out in the West having the same kind of drunk, raucous laughter. His travel from the last town had been lonely and weary and he (and his horse) needed a break. Reaching the horse post outside of the post office, he slipped from the horse easily, tying her up.
"Hey there, stranger.” A voice called. He glanced up to the sheriff’s office across the dusty road, a dark-skinned figure leaned up against the awning of the building. Hangman moved towards the stranger, removing his hat as the dusty pink of sunset turned into the purple of evening dusk. “Anything I can do for ya?”
“Well, I’d be mighty grateful for a place to sleep and somewhere to get a drink. Shadow here and I need a break.”
“I’d be happy to do that for you. Claudia down at the stables can get your horse all settled. As for the drink, I know just the place.”
“Well, thank ya.”
“Not often we get cowboys in this part. Least I can do for you.” Hangman bowed his head gratefully.
“Name’s Hangman.” The figure pauses from where he’s moving off the steps, raising an eyebrow.
“You’ve earned quite the reputation.” Hangman cocks his head, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Well, what can I say? I know how to give those out West a warning.” Cross me and you’ll hang.
The stranger smirks back. “I’m Coyote. Earned a reputation in my own right out in these parts.” Hangman nods. He’s heard rumblings of the cowboy named Coyote, son of a Sheriff. Hadn’t realized he’d stumbled right into another cowboy’s territory.
“Well, no worries Coyote. Won’t be here long. I’ll be gone by morning.” The man offered him a smile and a shake of his head, finally moving off the steps and grasping his shoulder.
“None of that. Happy to have a cowboy of your caliber here. Let’s go get you a drink. Margaret?”
“Yes?”
“Go grab Claudia from the stables will you?” A woman moved out from behind the wooden doors, taking in the sight of the two cowboys. “Get this nice  gentleman’s horse out to the stables and well-taken care of.” She nodded.
“I’ll see to it immediately.” Coyote let go of Hangman’s shoulders as Hangman places his hat back on his head, moving down towards the loud bar at the end of the main road. The two enter and Hangman relishes in the quiet comfort the familiarity of this scene brings him. The drunk men surrounding every part of the bar, loudly fighting and laughing and singing and gambling. There’s sporting women scattered around the bar, noticeable from their dress and hair. Some are draped over the men that have chosen them, other clearly seducing the men in front of them, too drunk to really know what they’re doing. Coyote claps him on the shoulder again, shaking him.
“It’s not much, but it’s our towns best reprieve.” Hangman’s not sure if Coyote’s referring to the prostitutes or the drinking, but he doesn’t ask as the men move towards the bar. “Two whiskey please. On me.” The bartender, a stocky man with an overgrown beard nods, pouring the drinks for them while Hangman lifts the hat off his head, placing it on the dirty countertop. Hangman takes the drink and knocks it back, welcoming the burn as the liquid slides down his throat.
“Coyote!” A man yelled and they turn to see a group of men. The man who yelled is waving him over with his hat and Coyote claps him on the shoulder once more.
“I’ll be right back.” He says and disappears into the crowd. Hangman catches the bartender’s eye and nods, signaling a refill. He pours the drink as a woman sidles up next to him, her arm sliding across his back.
“Well, hey there stranger. Haven’t seen you around in these parts before.” She drawls and his eyes flicker over to her, taking her in. Her dress is a cream white, smudges of dirt and dust on it. Same for her face, which is framed by stray pieces of a messy updo and dark lipstick. The dress has leather straps at the top and he briefly entertains the thought of unclasping them from her shoulders, revealing what he could imagine to be the very nicest of breasts if her figure is anything to go by, his mouth fanning hot breath over her bare shoulders and skin. He blinks the thought away and bites his bottom lip. “You look weary, traveler. What do you say we get out of here? I could relieve some of your stress.” She whispers, moving in closer. His eyes flicker down to the darkness of her lips once more and he knows that it would be so easy to just move down and capture them with his own.
“Sorry darling, but I’m not looking for a soiled dove like you.” He bit out, reeling himself back in. He prided himself on not falling to the seduction of prostitutes in any town. They were fine for some cowboys but prostitutes often brought trouble if you weren’t careful and for cowboys of his reputation, it was better to stay away from them entirely. Still, she was enticing, which meant she was trouble. The more seductive, the more trouble. And Hangman did not want the kind of trouble she would bring him.
The girl physically recoiled at the insult, arm dropping from his back, a dark look appearing in her eyes. Before she could retort, Coyote’s voice was whistling.
“Carolina! You know damn well not to be hanging around the people I bring in here.” A fire alighted on the girls face as he watched on curiously. Carolina, he thought. Pretty name for a pretty girl. She’d be prettier if she cleaned herself up and stopped selling her body, he thought.
“If I’d known he was here with you, I never would’ve approached him.” Her voice was venomous, a dark tone to match the browns of her eyes, orbs swirling with anger and an emotion he couldn’t quite place.
“Get lost Carolina, before I have you arrested.” She huffed, gathering her dress up and moving further into the bar.
“A word of advice, if I may, Hangman.” Coyote said and Hangman nodded, encouraging the man to speak. “Stay away from Carolina. We look the other way when it comes to prostitution around these parts, what with the brothel being next door, but Carolina’s more trouble than she’s worth.” The statement sounded personal to the man and he briefly wondered why this man hated her so deeply. Still, it only confirmed what he had first perceived about the girl. His eyes flicker over his shoulder, watching the girl drape herself over another man, feeling anger stir in his chest as the man roughly and aggressively pulled her in, with little care for her comfort or well-being. Hangman turned away and knocked his whiskey back, grip tight on the glass, as he forced the girl out of his mind.
-
He tossed in the bed, unable to get the images of the girl out of his mind. Flickers of moments that had not happened, of a desire he would never give into, played in his brain as the night passed. He finally pulled himself from the bed, electing to get out of the stuffy room above the saloon and take a walk out among the quiet town. He should be sleeping, getting well-rested for the journey to the next place, to the next adventure, but he couldn’t, not when the thought of Carolina was seared into his brain. She had clawed her way in to his brain and he could not get her out. His back burned where she had touched him and as he weaved his way through the town, the night stars twinkling down at him, he could not undo what she had done to him. He’d been approached by many girls like her, turned them down, and they had all been so easy to forget. So why wasn’t she?
The screams reached him first, and then the smell of smoke. He felt his feet taking off towards the sounds before his brain caught up to him. When he arrived at the building, he recognized it to be the brothel Coyote had pointed out to him earlier in the night, and it was up in flames. The whole thing was almost gone and there were a few late-night strollers around, stopped in morbid horror, but no one was doing anything. He grabbed the nearest man, shaking him.
“Why’re you just standing here? Go get someone!” He shouted, noticing a figure stumbling out of the wreckage, what was left of the charred building. The flames licking the wood were slowly following her and he threw the man, racing towards the steps to pull her out. He realized upon closer inspection it was Carolina stumbling out of the building and given by the wreckage, the flames that were slowly closing in, she may have been the only survivor. Her already dirty dress was sooted with ash and she was hobbling, burns apparent, bent over with coughs from the smoke. He pulled her up into his arms and safe from the flames, feet moving in a desperate attempt to get away from the burning heat. “Hey, you’re okay.” He whispers as she coughs into his shoulder. “You’re safe. Was there anyone still in there?” She shook her head, coughing again.
“No, no- it- it came on- so quickly, I-” He shook his head.
“Stop talking, you’re only gonna make it worse.” He says, setting the girl down in the dust. The town is awake now as he takes in the way they gawk at his figure crouched over her body, the way Coyote is shouting at men who are trying to quell the flames. There’s not much they could do, the building in charred ruins by the time it’s put out. He’s kept his head down, eyes on Carolina, who’s sat in the dust, trembling. A gun cocks and without thinking, he reached for his own, but upon looking up, he realizes the pistol is aimed at the girl in front of him. He stands up quickly, moving in between him and the girl who’s staring at Coyote with wide, fearful eyes. “Hey, hey, what’re you doing?”
“Get out of my way Hangman. I won’t hesitate to shoot you too.” He says darkly, eyes full of dark fury to match.
“Now, there’s no need for that. What’s she done to warrant this kind of public execution? You said it yourself that y’all look the other way when it comes to prostitution. Can’t put her on trial for being in the building.” He says calmly, hoping Coyote will lower the gun.
“She was the only survivor.”
“So?”
“So my father was in that building. She’s the only survivor, and my father, a man she has accused of rape, a good man, is dead. She started that fire, I’m sure of it. And she deserves to die too.” Hangman looks down at the woman, who looks astounded at the charge.
“No, please-”
“She’ll hang.” He says, looking Coyote firmly in the eyes. “She’ll hang for what she’s done. She’ll serve as a reminder and a warning.” Coyote lowers his gun, finally looking him in the eye.
“I see where you get your name.”
“I never said it wasn’t earned.”
Coyote nods to the man who’s looking on. “James, get her into a cell. You and Williams are tasked with watching her. She’ll hang at sunrise in two days time.” The man nods, pulling the girl roughly from the ground and she gasps.
“No, please, I swear, I never would’ve, please-” Her sobs and pleas echo across the silent square as the town looks on.
“Told you she was more trouble than she was worth.” Coyote murmurs and Hangman grasps his shoulder tightly.
-
His boots sound heavy against the creaky wooden floor, the familiar colors of dusk settling into the sky, the last of sunlight flickering across the wall. Coyote’s slumped down in his chair, eyes firmly on the girl who curled in the corner or her cell, back turned from them. She doesn’t turn at the sound of him, and as he moves closer, he realizes she’s trembling. He turns from her and sets his eyes on the weary looking man.
“Coyote, why don’t you go get yourself a drink and a hot meal? I’ll watch her.” He states and Coyote looks up at him. “Don’t want to be so exhausted you sleep through her hanging.” He jokes, the words tasting bitter on his tongue. The town was quick to blame her for the fire but he’s not so certain she did it. Still, this is not his jurisdiction and a world with one less prosititute like Carolina might be a better world. The man lets out a gruff chuckle and nods, standing up.
“Thanks Hangman, I appreciate your kindness.” He shakes his head.
“No worries, least I can do. I’ll watch her for the night. Get some food and some sleep.” He nods, wood creaking as he moves closer to the metal bars of her cell as Hangman settles in the rickety chair.
“Tomorrow. You’ll pay.” He whispers. “That’s a promise.” He turns back to Hangman, nodding to the keys that are on the table. “Would you toss me those? Feel better knowing there’s no hope for escape for her. If anyone can withstand her seduction it’s you, but I’m taking no chances.” He nods, tossing the keys to the man who catches them easily. He tips his hat in gratitude and then the door of the jailhouse is shutting behind him. He hears Coyote’s footsteps fade away and he sighs, taking his hat off, setting it down on the table where the keys were. He settles back in the chair, crossing his arms, eyes on the girl who makes no movement other than he way her body trembles slightly, only noticeable to a trained eye like his. The darkness of the night settles in, the moonlight quickly replacing what had been the last of the daylight. He sighs after a good few hours.
“Well, Carolina, I gotta tell you. You did a good number on that building.” Silence. “You wanna tell me why? Last confessions. Just between the two of us.” Silence. “Carolina, you’re not gonna get another chance.” Still silence. “Carolina, you’re going to hang tomorrow morning. In just a few hours, you know that? This town’s going to make an example of you and your kind.” She shifts, but doesn’t saying anything. “If you’ve got anything left to say at all, now’s your chance. Because in a few hours you’ll be a dead woman.” There’s silence again and he huffs out a sigh, settling back in his chair.
“I didn’t do it.” The voice is soft, full of terror, cracking on the words, scratchy from disuse. He’d been told Carolina hadn’t said a word after the first hour of arrest, sobs and please disappearing, almost as fast as the fire within her did. She’d resigned herself to her fate.
“What was that darling?” He taunts, leaning forward. She rolls around, face turning towards him. In the moonlight, he catches her dried tear tracks, the look of simultaneous fear and resignation in her eyes.
“I didn’t do it.” She maintains, and he chuckles, shaking his head as he sits back in his seat.
“You’re a very good liar, darling.” An anger alights in her face as she stands up, moving to the steel bars that separate her and him.
“I’m not lying. I didn’t do it.” She stares at him defiantly. “Those were my friends in there. I wouldn’t have killed them.” Hangman takes in the sincerity in her eyes. “Please. You have to believe me. I wouldn’t have done it.”
“Maybe the fire got out of control. Maybe you thought more of them would get out. Maybe they were a sacrifice you would make in order to get your revenge.”
“No.” She whispers, hands coming up to grasp the bars, head softly coming to rest on them. Hair falls down to frame her face and he resists the strange urge to reach out and brush them back. “No.”
“This town seems to think you would.”
“This town hates me because I called out a vile man.”
“Coyote tells me he was a good man.”
“Coyote’s blinded by love and respect for his father. They all are. We all know what he was truly like.”
“And who's we darling?”
“Us. The workers. We knew what he was like. Our Madam had been trying to get rid of him for years, used what he did to me to make an example, but the town so deeply respects him for his work as Sheriff, they laid the blame in me. Easier to find a fault in a soiled dove than a good man.”
“And what exactly did he do to you darling?”
“He-” Her breath catches and she looks up, the fresh tears glistening on her cheeks. “He raped me.” His vision tunnels as he takes in the way she bows her head, trying to hide her face. “I told him no, that I wasn’t working that night, that I wanted to be left alone, but he- he-” A sob escapes her throat and she lets go of the bars, moving back to collapse on to the cot. “I wanted him to pay but not at the cost of my friends. Please, you have to believe me.” He takes in the way her body is shuddering with sobs, the fear on her face, the way she had pleaded. He stands up and reaches for his gun. He cocks it and she looks up at him, eyes wide. “Hey, hey, what’re you- please-”
“When I tell you to run, you do it. Go to the stables. My horse Shadow is next to a Chestnut mare, Blossom. You grab her and get out of town. I’ll be right behind you.”
“What?”
“You do as I say, do you understand? I’m trying to save your life.” He doesn’t give the girl a chance to answer before the gun is firing off three rounds in quick succession, effectively breaking the lock on the cell. He winces at the loudness of the shots ringing out. “Run.” She slips past the swinging door, and out of the building as he kicks over the chair. He tips the lamp in the corner over. Although it hadn’t been lit, the shattered glass will do the job. He tips the table over, and moves the cot to look thrown about in a struggle. If he can make them think there was a struggle, that she’d forced him out at gunpoint, then he was buying them time, however little. Mere moments later, he was dashing to the stables, a little ways back from the jailhouse. Blossom was already untied and Carolina was sat upon her, hands on Shadow’s reigns. He grabbed them from her, already pulling himself up onto his saddle. He could hear distant shouting from the jailhouse and he looks at Carolina, a fearful look in her eyes. “I don’t care what happens, you ride. Don’t stop riding, no matter what happens.” She nods and he takes off, the girl close behind him. The sounds of hooves galloping against the road will attract attention from those living out at the edge but by the time the connection is made, they will be long gone. Hopefully.
In search of adventure, he’d found trouble.
In search of trouble, she’d found freedom.

@svnroom thank you so much for tagging me and i'm so sorry it took me forever to do this <3
last song: okay according to lastfm it was samson by regina spektor, from my sleep playlist (gorgeous gorgeous song ty sol for introducing me to it everyone go listen) but the last one i was conscious for was carolina by jon bryant. i'm not sure what it is about that song but it's so calming and peaceful and i really love it.
last film: finally watched four weddings and a funeral, it was a lot gayer thank i expected and also i'm in love with fiona. i must add, somewhat regrettably, that hugh grant is very gender in that movie.
currently watching: well i just finished umbrella academy s3 (i liked it! a lot! more than s2!) but currently i'm watching house. everyone has a procedural medical drama that's their cross to bear and this is mine. it's honestly a good time though and i think i might actually finish it?
currently reading: so many things. so so many i'm awful at sticking o one book at a time. lust for life by irving stone (van goh biography), three woman by lisa taddeao (absolutely not something i would have picked up myself but a friend raved about it and then lent me her copy), and through the language glass by guy deutscher (about the potential credibility of the sapir whorf hypothesis and lent to my by and ex teacher!! i'm really enjoying it so far). tbh there are probably a few more i've started and plan to finish but i can't remember rn!
current obsession: stamp making! unearthed my old carving stuff and i have so many ideas
tagging @whoisthisboy @plangentia @courfeyracs-swordcane @permets-2 @chaotic-candles @fruitlicense @h-isforhiatus @unsightlygoblin @ohgodohfuckidontknow @goodlwife @applesandbannas747 @sunlightisfalling @trinitea-fics @ramonapest (literally just everyone who's been showing up in my notifs a lot, i know i don't know all of you that well but i'd love to see your answers <3)

23 and 27 ✨️
23. A song that you think everyone should listen to.
Hide - Rainbow Kitten Surprise. RKS got quite big on tiktok last year and so I get to be very 'i liked them before they were viral' about them and it feels Great. Hide is the best song about being queer that exists, and is so so so interesting lyric wise when you consider that it was written when the singer was processing being a gay man in North Carolina, but now she's a trans woman. Incredibly interesting stuff there. It's got this kinda 3 movement structure that builds to a brutal brutal brutally sparse ending. And most importantly, a fact I only found out after already loving the song for 3 years: it was recorded in one take. With the exception of layering and some vocal clean ups it came entirely out of a jam in one take. Absolutely insane. Love em.
27. A song that breaks your heart.
Could also say the last 20 seconds of Hide for this but that's dull and boring. I'm trying to stick to a one song per band rule too here so no Mountain Goats which would make this significantly easier. Let me consult the Incredibly Sad playlist that I keep locked away.
With the caveat that I didn't find this through 13 Reasons Why so it's not cringe, The Night We Met - Lord Huron, specifically if you read the loss in the song to be about losing friends to mental illness, as I had a tendency to As A Teen. Honourable mention to Amen - Amber Run because it's soul crushingly sad about his dead nan *and* they went to my school. (semi second honourable mention to Talia - King Princess for a straight up and down breakup song but King Princess is a bit cringe so let's move on).
ty for the questions and putting these onto my feed mr lance surname

The haunting began sometime in 1817 when John Bell witnessed the apparition of a strange creature resembling a dog. Bell fired at the animal but it disappeared. John's son Drew Bell approached an unknown bird perched on a fence that flew off and was of "extraordinary size." The daughter Betsy observed a girl in a green dress swinging from the limb of an oak tree. Dean, a person enslaved by the Bell family, reported being followed by a large black dog on evenings he visited his wife. Activity moved to the Bell household with knocking heard along the door and walls. The family heard sounds of gnawing on the beds, invisible dogs fighting, and chains along the floor. About this time John Bell began experiencing paralysis in his mouth. The phenomena grew in intensity as sheets were pulled from beds when the children slept. Soon the entity pulled hair and scratched the children with particular emphasis on Betsy who was slapped, pinched and stuck with pins.
The Bells turned to family friend James Johnston for help. After retiring for the evening at the Bell home, Johnston was awakened that night by the same phenomena. That morning he told John Bell it was a "spirit, just like in the Bible." Soon word of the haunting spread with some traveling great distances to see the witch. The apparition began to speak out loud and was asked, "Who are you and what do you want?" and the voice answered feebly, "I am a spirit; I was once very happy but have been disturbed." The spirit offered diverse explanations of why it had appeared, tying its origin to the disturbance of a Native American burial mound located on the property, and sent Drew Bell and Bennett Porter on an unproductive search for buried treasure. With the emergence of full conversations, the spirit repeated word for word two sermons given 13 miles apart at the same time. The entity was well acquainted with Biblical text and appeared to enjoy religious arguments. As another amusement, the witch shared gossip about activities in other households, and at times appeared to leave for brief moments to visit homes after an inquiry.
John Johnston, a son of James, devised a test for the witch, something no one outside his family would know, asking the entity what his Dutch step-grandmother in North Carolina would say to the slaves if she thought they did something wrong. The witch replied with his grandmother's accent, "Hut tut, what has happened now?" In another account, an Englishman stopped to visit and offered to investigate. On remarking on his family overseas, the witch suddenly began to mimic his English parents. Again in the early morning, the witch woke him to voices of his parents worried as they had heard his voice as well. The Englishman quickly left that morning and later wrote to the Bell family that the entity had visited his family in England. He apologized for his scepticism.
At times, the spirit displayed a form of kindness, especially towards Lucy, John Bell's wife, "the most perfect woman to walk to earth." The witch would give Lucy fresh fruit and sing hymns to her, and showed John Bell Jr. a measure of respect.
Referring to John Bell Sr. as "Old Jack," the witch claimed she intended to kill him and signalled this intention through curses, threats, and afflictions. The story climaxes with the Bell patriarch being poisoned by the witch. Afterward the entity interrupted the mourners by singing drinking songs. In 1821, as a result of the witch's entrapment, Betsy Bell called off her engagement to Joshua Gardner. Subsequently, the entity told the family it was going to leave, but return in seven years in 1828. The witch returned on time to Lucy and her sons Richard and Joel with similar activities as before, but they chose not to encourage it, and the witch appeared to leave again.
Several accounts say that during his military career, Andrew Jackson was intrigued with the story and his men were frightened away after traveling to investigate. In an independent oral tradition recorded in the vicinity of Panola County, Mississippi, the witch was the ghost of an unpleasant overseer John Bell murdered in North Carolina. In this tradition, the spirit falls in love with the central character 'Mary', leading to her death. This account is reminiscent of vampire lore. The supernatural powers attributed to the Tennessee spirit have also been compared to that of jinn in mythology.
In the manuscript attributed to Richard Williams Bell, he wrote that the spirit remained a mystery:

Has time finally caught up to the ruined plans of 2020? 2 years ago The "disco got burned down," but looks like she's bringing it back. Also, it seems to be a ressurgence of that era with other artist too.
Taylor wore a broken Mirrorball-esque dress. A song that talks about high heels.
Karlie x Carolina Herrera's New perfume is called Midnight. The perfume is a high heel.
The anticipation is wild. I can't imagine what will happen when she drops the track list. Kinda hoping she doesn't tbh.
Taylor has had some big importance public events that would cause many sleepless nights. I'm sure she has a lot of private events as well. This album by far, will be her best if she is just plain honest and not so evasive and cryptic. We love an easter egg and scavenge hut, but please Taylor, just lay it out... Point. Blank. and the PERIOD!
This album will be whatever she wants it to be and then some.
Carolina Herrera has used the high heel fragrance bottle for years but I think it’s cool tying it to mirrorball.
And the midnight connection is so fun. CH is one brand who is always in to joining in on the fun.
