Do you have any tips for dressing modestly without overheating? I want to start but I have an autoimmune disorder that comes with overheating extremely easily. I've defaulted to wearing as little and as light as I can without feeling too exposed and while staying work appropriate but I have wanted to dress modestly for a long time now.
Hi anon,
So a lot of it depends on your environment and how humid or arid it is, how sunny or shaded it is, cloud cover, and other external factors like what your overheating triggers are and lifestyle (do you spend most time inside or outside, are you physically active, etc.)
However, some general rules and suggestions:
Loose and flowing clothing can help a lot, especially if you live somewhere with intense sunlight. Airflow can really help with keeping you cool, and in some cases keeping the sun off your skin can be cooler than being uncovered.
Wear light colors that will reflect the light
Wear lighter fabrics, especially anything that is naturally cool to the touch, like linen or cotton poplin
Natural fabrics are likely to breathe better also
Skirts skirts skirts - a good opaque but light skirt can be ankle length and still cooler than shorts
If you really can't be solidly covered, wearing sheer but covering things can help such as tops with georgette or chiffon sleeves
If you really can't be covered at all, period, for your physical health, do still keep in mind that covered =/= modest. A person wearing a full latex catsuit is not more modest than wearing gardening shorts and a straight cut tank top. You can choose clothing that is designed to flatter but not be sexy rather than clothing designed to draw specific attention. Look for clothing that is and looks practical, down-to-earth, and has lines that deflect attention from private areas.
Hope that helps!

Does anyone have non-Orthodox sources on covering your hair as an unmarried Jew? I want to learn more about taking on that mitzvah, but don't feel that these available sources properly reflect the opinions, reasoning, and experiences of those of us in liberal Jewish communities.

I'm surprised how little I see detrans people who find comfort in religion.
I didn't detransition because of my faith, but to me, my femininity is something I couldn't find comfort in without my faith. When I had just detransitioned, I saw myself falling back into the teenage desire of oversexualising myself in my femininity.
That's when I discovered how much I love modesty.
I covered my hair, and my femininity became about autonomy and choice.
I put on a long skirt, and my femininity became about being incognito.
Nobody needs to know what my hair and body looks like.
Religious modesty saved me from oversexualising myself for the male gaze as an attempt to seek validation in my newly found role as a woman.

Do you know of any resources for tzniut outfits for men? All the resources I've found are directed towards women.
Here is an "AskTheRav" response for an Orthodox view on men's Tzniut.
Here's a basic overview of the Halachot and Minhagim, using Shulchan Aruch, Even HaEzer 23:6 and Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 91:1-6
-The top half of the body should be covered at all times (unless swimming in some cases)
-Shorts that or too short or too tight shouldn't be worn, since the legs should be covered and pressure should not be put on the genitals.
-A man shouldn't ride a horse without a saddle
-The head must be covered during prayer
-A belt should be worn during prayer (so that the genitals cannot be seen while looking down, since skirts were looser then).
-Some also prohibit sleeveless shirts
Essentially, very similar to the laws of Tzniut for women.
In a practical, modern sense, this means that as a Tzniut Observant man, I do not wear booty shorts or tank tops or crop tops or too-tight shirts and pants. I usually wear loose jeans or sweatpants, and comfortable t-shirts in the Summer and button-downs and sweaters in the Winter. I also wear a Kippah at all times.
Tzniut also relates to how one carries oneself. Some Tzniut-observant men try not to use excessive profanity, gamble, be drunk in public, engage in a sexually suggestive manner in public, etc.
Hope this helps!

Bit of a shot in the dark, but have any other tichel-wearers tried using these in their scarves:
I was able to make something similar with heavy-duty fusible interfacing, but was curious if anyone else had tried this?

It’s always interesting when people try to decide why others are modest for them. Like no I’m not modest cause I think my body needs to be hidden or is dirty or because men say so and I have to listen to men I live in a highly antisemitic environment as in my father has outright said hitler is right type of antisemitic (while he’s never physically violent this is still a very not fun environment) because of this environment I don’t get to really do the things I need to do to move forward in converting I had to stop going to services I don’t get to celebrate holidays there’s no lighting candles for me or Seder or anything else I get to read my books and say prayers and blessing when I’m by myself I can occasionally catch services when they are streamed but I don’t get a lot of privacy so that can be tricky to but you know what I can do I can control how I dress I can consciously think about God and the day I get to move forward with converting every single day while I get dressed things like clothes shopping become ways for me to connect with God and to think/remember the people and community I want to join Modesty isn’t always done for one reason and I wish people would not reduce it to one reason or say it’s only ever done for misogynistic reasons

I love dressing tznius
Not really in the I Obey Religion way but in the I was Traumatized By Men So Much I Dislike Men So Much I Want Them To See As Little Of Me As Possible way. Maybe this is because of my ex, the trauma and all. I don’t know. I wish I could hide behind a huge white blanket everywhere I go, with only two holes for my eyes. Like a ghost. I do not want men to perceive me. I want them to leave me alone. I am minding my business, so should you be minding yours. I don’t want them to try to converse with me. They are not allowed to see me. I just want to be left alone. I am tired.
