Thailand and China change air exercise site due to complaints from residents about noise
'Falcon Strike' was interrupted for a day after residents opposed noise pollution.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/24/2022 - 6:31 PM in Military
The renewed "Falcon Strike" military exercise of the Royal Thai Air Force, together with China, will be relocated from next year due to complaints from civilians living near the current base.
"The joint exercise will be held at Nam Pong Air Force Base, Khon Khaen Province, for the next two years," said a Thai Air Force officer, who preferred to remain anonymous because he was not allowed to speak to foreign media.
The government of Udon Thani, where the exercises began on Sunday and last until next Wednesday, received numerous complaints from local residents about noise pollution, the official said, adding that the exercise was also "paused for a day" on Thursday and will resume on Friday.

The 'Falcon Strike' joint exercises have been held regularly since 2015, but have been suspended in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, China sent six J-10C/S fighter jets, two JH-7A bombers and a Shaanxi KJ-500 control and early warning aircraft (AEW&C), being the first time that the Chinese air force has sent its JH-7A fighter-bombers to participate in the 'Falcon Strike'.

In turn, Thailand deployed five Saab JAS39 Gripen cross-in-one fighters, three Alpha Jet attack aircraft and a Saab 340 AEW&C.
In total, 18 aircraft are participating in the exercises twice a day and are “making a lot of noise,” the Thai Air Force officer said.
Analysts said that the Royal Thai Air Force did not send U.S.-made F-16 fighters for the exercises, as it seeks to buy advanced U.S. F-35 aircraft.

The exercise includes "training courses such as air support, attacks on land targets and deployment of small and large-scale troops," according to the Chinese Ministry of Defense.
The Royal Thai Air Force Base of Udorn, where the exercises are being carried out, was a frontline facility of the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1976, at the height of the U.S.-Thailand military alliance.
During the Vietnam War, up to 80% of all USAF airstrikes on North Vietnam and Laos would have originated from air bases in Thailand, according to a U.S. Congress Registry of November 1, 1967.
Since about 2001, Thailand "hastend to follow a foreign policy of protection or balance between the US and China," said Paul Chambers, Thailand's military analyst.

"Especially since the 2006 coup, Thai governments have sought to compensate for military acquisitions, joint military exercises and military training with both countries," Chambers said.
"The U.S. will be watching the exercises, but they will see them understanding Thailand's dual policy," he added.
Since the Thai military increased its power after coups in 2006 and 2014, Bangkok has bought tanks, armored vehicles and entered into a controversial multibillion-dollar contract to acquire submarines from China.
China's arms exports to Thailand increased fivefold between 2014 and 2018 compared to the previous five years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute in Sweden.
The Thai air force has expressed a strong interest in buying some F-35 poachers to replace its aged fleet of F-16A/B Fighting Falcons, but Washington so far seems reluctant to consider buying, fearing that sensitive hunting technologies may be compromised by China, its largest military and strategic rival.
Tumblr media
The exercises in Thailand follow the end of a week-long Chinese military aeronaval exercise around Taiwan in response to a visit to the island by U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Responding to criticism that the 'Falcon Strike' exercise could hinder Thailand's access to advanced U.S. military technology, Prapas Sonjaidee, spokesman for the Royal Thai Air Force, said on Tuesday that the exercises are a regular practice, which is carried out publicly and not a secret mission.
"It is common for soldiers from all over the world to train together, share experiences and learn from each other," Prapas said, ruling out concerns about the possible acquisition of the F-35.
"The Air Force exercises are likely to strengthen the arguments of those U.S. officials who argue that Washington should sell the F-35s to Thailand," said analyst Paul Chambers.
It was during the Trump administration that Washington "resurrected the sale of weapons to Thailand," Chambers said.
He added that, in his opinion, since the Biden administration continued to prioritize geopolitical interests over other factors, such as human rights values, in its decision to continue sending weapons to Thailand, "this sale will probably happen".

OUR HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET
I’m a good neighbour, most of the time. I give a hoot, rarely a boot, as such, some respond in kind, and gradually we swap larger words, larger sentences, and the next thing you know, we call each other by name! With the fences down, soon, you become privy to people’s highs and lows, stories that too easily die in silence.
Our home/family includes a dog we named Bowie. We live at a spitting distance from a bustling park, the reason we bought the Victorian, terraced home a year and a half ago. The park is Bowie’s second home. I know most local dog walkers, certainly I know all the people from our street who enjoy the park with their furry companions, but to my surprise, few know each other.
Bella, on the last corner before the park’s gates, knows no one below her number. After a long illness, her paraplegic husband passed away from sepsis recently. She knows Barda who lives on the other side of the street. Barda’s husband is deteriorating slowly with alzheimer. I see him most days sitting on the wall like Humpty Dumpty, smoking a fag, looking vacant. He’s stopped washing. He's stopped talking. Until he crashed the car, he wouldn’t stop driving. The cracks are showing. He’s one fumble away from a bad fall.
Neither Bella or Barda knows that the man who lives two doors down above Mr Cyclop, looks out for me when I walk Bowie at 2am. Noah will sometimes catch up with us and talk about his sexual fantasies. Of course he knows I’m gay — I wear Apple’s hi-vis 2020 pride watch band around my wrist every day. He’s into the golden shower stuff, but unfortunately, our house is carpeted wall to wall, and unless we turn the bathroom into a wet room, I wouldn’t even entertain the idea. Noah is bipolar and only comes out on a high, so he doesn’t bother me too often.
Mr Cyclops lives on the ground floor with his wife, and Boss, the terrier / shih tzu cross. It’s hard not to stare at the left socket of his eye. Some days, it looks like chilli udon noodles. The air is thick with pollen these days, fluffy dandelion seeds get all jammed up in there. I’d certainly wear a patch, pretend I'm DC’s Cyborg – LED light and all – would be useful for when I pick up Bowie’s poo in the high grass at night.
On the next block, at the house with the psychedelic sixties wallpaper, the mother of an eight-year-old boy died of a broken heart after her husband passed away a few months ago. At least that’s what we gathered. The child was seen running in the street crying, “She’s dead!” It was the first time either Bella or Barda had seen the boy let alone heard his voice. He was homeschooled like I was at his age. They kept to themselves, and for a recluse family, they were never shy exposing the nightmare-inducing wallpaper to all who walked past their window. That’s all we’ll remember of them: death, the orphan, and the geometric, rainbow-coloured wallpaper. I almost miss seeing the atrocity now that the blinds are permanently shut.
Nearer to us, there’s Tony’s portfolio of properties which will be divided between his two daughters and two nieces. Tony died last week, he would have been 99 had he lived two more days. The rent is cheap but the tradeoff isn’t worth the economy as the properties are in a devolving state of disrepair. A couple of junkies live under a dealer at the corner house. At the end of our block, Tony’s house has been emptied, so the large family next door are taking more liberties with noise pollution. They keep mallards in their kids’ paddling pool. They must have captured the wild birds at the park. I suppose mallards are easier to capture than the more colourful parakeets who keep to the high branches, and more entertaining than a terrapin. The jail-birds are let out in the courtyard for a quack more often since Tony died.
Next to ours, top floor, there’s Patricia, an alcoholic who loves playing Patsy Cline loud and throwing empty Frosty Jack's bottles at the ducks, cursing. The ground floor has been vacant since Guillaume disappeared after never paying the rent once since moving-in a year ago. He was also a dealer and went by different names depending on who called upon him. His alias had bills in arrears and apparently lived at our address. The debt collectors should finally stop knocking at our door soon.
On the other side of the street, Gertrude’s son has returned from prison and is begging to be let in. It seems it was only last week the cops raided her house and left with the lad in handcuffs. Can’t have been too serious. She swore she wouldn’t let him in again, but there he goes through the door. She’s a mother. That’s all she's ever done. “Soon I’ll run out of things for him to steal, and then he' won’t have a reason to come back,” she'll tell me again tomorrow.
Oh, I skipped Mario, a seventy-something lonely man who once sent me a link to his Chaturbate account so we could chat in private. He's been giving me the cold shoulder for not having taken the offer. Too bad. His dog Lobo and Bowie loved frolicking in the park together.
I can see Mick at work, cleaning the neighbours' windows. He's the first to have welcomed us on the street. Could be that he's a good businessman, or perhaps that it is compulsory, being a proud and jolly JW. He broke his back falling off a ladder and since has been using long hoses instead. That he got away with three fused vertebrae certainly proves that a life praying wasn't for naught.
I'm getting to what prompted me to share my street with you, therefore I stop at the halfway point where Lee used to live with his partner of twenty years. I hadn't realised that he had been kicked out of his house last month until I ran into him this morning. His partner's daughters had wired the house with hidden cameras and are accusing him of assault against their mother who suffers from dementia. The daughters kicked Lee out, placed their mother in a care home and re-homed all four dogs. He's naturally broken. That's also how Mario the lonely septuagenarian said hello for the first time in months. They are good friends and were setting out in Lee's van when I dared ask the poor man how he was doing. Other than Mario and I, no one knew Mike, no one else knows what befallen him.
That's but half of my street, one street amongst thousands in my town which is smaller than the average town in this country, yet the street is the quietest street I've ever lived on. How's your street doing these days?
All names have been changed to preserve anonymity, otherwise all stories are real, I kid you not.

what we could be | part three
catch up here.
trigger warnings: depictions of anxiety, panic attacks
Tumblr media
“Hellooo?” The sultry female voice repeated.
At least Aelin is sure she doesn’t need to get her ears checked--it was definitely a woman who answered. She pulled the phone from her ear to double check the name she dialed. Indeed, Rowan, bird emoji, in bold white letters stares back at her.
In the background, Aelin heard the rustle of sheets. A mumbled male voice.
Aelin immediately hung up and threw her phone to the other side of her bed. She pulled her knees to chest, tucked her head between them, and forced herself to breathe in and out. In and out. In. Out.
The pounding in her ears threatened to pull her into the oblivion she always tries so hard to avoid. Aelin’s anxiety started showing face after her parents died, only to worsen after her Uncle Gavriel. Her first night in Arobynn’s foster care was also the first time she had a panic attack.
For Aelin, they come in the form of water. She starts in a room, which is more like a glorified box. The walls are either made of glass or a clear plastic, she can never get close enough to tell, and although there is no ceiling, the walls run farther and higher than her eyes can see. Her room-box is on a beach somewhere with wet sand at her feet. In the beginning, she tried to dig her way out, only to give up when each handful of sand was replaced by twice that. Until the sand was up to her knees, trapping her. It’s always night time, the sky starless. The only light is provided by the sliver of a waning moon over the horizon.
Then the tide begins to rise. There are no waves yet, just a gradual increase in water. It reaches her feet first, naturally, and by the time the water reaches the opposite wall of her room-box, it’s at her knees. Then the water bounces off the wall, creating ripples in the water that threaten to throw her off-balance.
The force of the waves intensifies as the water reaches her waist. And then she’s tumbling. The first few times, she can still reach the bottom to push herself to the surface. She’s been through this so much, she knows that after her third push she needs to try and take the deepest breath she can manage before she’s pulled under for good.
That happens next. She’s unsure which way is up or down, right or left. She tries to swim in whichever direction feels right, but the water is endless and she’s no longer in the room-box. She’s in the depths of the ocean, too far below to where there is no current to guide her, only nothing.
All too soon, she runs out of breath, but she would rather suffocate herself than inhale water. Either way, her panic wins. Aelin is never the target, without her they cease to exist. It’s that fire in her heart that the panic is after because without that fire, Aelin is no more. Her attacks are smart because they know there are two ways to extinguish a fire: deprive it of oxygen or get it wet.
Aelin is about to release the hold she has on her lungs when she feels something in her hand. In the water, she can’t tell what it is until another set of fingers interlace with hers.
Then she’s being pulled. Pulled and pulled, up and up, until the black of the water fades to blue. She never knows when it happens, but when she finally breaks the surface, there’s sunlight.
Slowly, she becomes more aware of her surroundings. Below her, she feels the fabric of her bedsheets, not the grains of sand. Her skin is damp from sweat, not soaked with sea water. Her breathing, while still shallow, is beginning to even out.
Her years of going to the university’s wellness center kicked in after a minute, and she began to list foods in alphabetical order in her head. Apples, bananas, cake. She wiggles her toes. French fries, grapes, hamburgers. She stretches her legs. Kiwi, lasagna, mangoes. She flexes her fingers, her arms. Oranges, popsicles, quesadillas.
In. Out.
Spaghetti, tacos, udon noodles.
Aelin lifts her head and opens her eyes. She blinks a few times and is finally able to focus on the soft forest green eyes staring back at her. They are so similar to yet completely different from the bright emeralds she longs to see.
Her best friend just sat there, holding her sweaty hand in hers until Aelin was ready to speak. She had to clear her throat a few times before she rasped, “A woman answered his phone.”
Lysandra’s eyes widened ever so slightly, but her face revealed nothing as she grabbed a glass of water she must have brought with her. Wordlessly, she handed it to Aelin. She downed half the glass in one go, then finished it in two more. She kept the glass in her hands, spinning it mindlessly as they talked.
“I don’t think you need me to tell you that it might not mean anything,” she said.
Aelin sighed. “I don’t think you need me to tell you that my mind isn’t exactly in the right place to be thinking of silver linings.”
“I know, I do, but we don’t need to freak out about it quite yet. I mean, you were going to go on a date with Chaol, right?” Aelin nodded weakly, seeing where she was going with this. “And he doesn’t actually know about the baby yet. So truly, he hasn’t done anything wrong, yeah?”
“I really hate when you’re right.”
“I think you secretly love it.”
The corner of Aelin’s mouth quirked up for a split second. “You’re as insufferable as my cousin.”
Lysandra barked out a laugh that made Aelin giggle. The sound was short-lived as the best friends were enveloped by silence once again.
Aelin contemplated what to do next, knowing Lysandra was exactly right. She was going to go on a date with someone else. So why did the thought of Rowan with another woman freak her out so badly? Gods, she was a mess. She really wants to blame it on the baby.
The baby.
Aelin touched a hand to her still-flat stomach and picked up her phone, knowing she needed to just rip the band-aid off. Her phone showed no new messages from Rowan, but why would he call his ex when he can be tangled in the sheets with the sexy-voiced woman? Not the point, Aelin. Right. She opened her text messages, scrolling to her conversation with Rowan.
Her heart clenched and silver lined her eyes when she saw that the last message he had sent her was on New Year’s Day. It read, Here’s to you and me in 2020, baby. I love you. Within 24 hours of that message, their relationship went to shit. Aelin doesn’t even remember what really happened, but next thing she knew, she was standing in an airport terminal crying, single, and unknowingly with child.
Aelin took a deep breath to calm her nerves and typed out a simple, Hey Rowan. I know we haven’t talked since you left, but I was wondering if you could call me when you’re free? Just let me know, thanks.
She locked her phone and crawled back under the covers. Effectively drained from her panic, the fire that was burning so bright when she woke up was barely an ember.
The sound of Lysandra moving about her apartment lulled her back into a dreamless sleep.
----------
Rowan Whitethorn was tired. Mentally, physically, emotionally. He was so gods damned tired. His old friend, Vaughan, told him that if he took just one really easy study abroad class, he’ll essentially get a semester long vacation paid for completely by financial aid.
Rowan had a free elective left in his crazy pre-law schedule, so he chose photography. Just taking pictures of random shit, right?
Wrong.
His brain is overflowing with random information about aperture and lighting and exposure, and if someone tells him his angles are wrong one more time, he’s going to lose it. On top of that, he was assigned a partner to work with this whole semester. And because there really must be a god out there whose sole purpose is to spite him, his partner is his unbearable ex, Remelle.
He and Remelle are from the same hometown and went to the same middle and high school. They started dating the summer before they left for college and decided to stay together at the University of Terrasen.
He wasn’t sure what it was exactly that made him realize Remelle was a Grade A Bitch, but by the end of fall semester, he ended it with her. Then he met Aelin through Fenrys, and - well, he doesn’t want to think about her right now.
Rowan has been in Wendlyn for about two months now, running around the city finding subjects for their project. Wendlyn is one of the biggest cities he’s ever been to, and even if he commutes everywhere he’s trying to go, it takes him a whole day to barely cover sixteenth of the land.
It wouldn’t be so bad if he had someone else to split the city with, but Remelle usually spends her whole day seducing whatever poor bastard she can get to take her to bed that night instead. He’d drag Fenrys along if he could, but he opted to take an Old Language class and is stuck in a classroom at Mistward Tech.
The weather in Wendlyn was finally beginning to warm up after weeks of blizzards and freezing temperatures that put Terrasen winters to shame, so Rowan chose to wander on foot. He spends most of the morning taking practice shots of Wendlyn architecture and anything else that might look nice for the project.
Rowan had to admit this was a nice excuse to go sightseeing.
By noon, he was feeling good about the progress he made and planned to reward himself with whatever delicious spread their hosts had prepared for lunch. He figured he was about an hour walk away from their housing, so he opted to call an Uber.
It took him about five minutes of rummaging through the camera bag before he finally found his phone. The sun was so bright at this time of day that the only thing he could see was that his facial recognition wasn’t working. Using muscle memory, he typed in his passcode when the faint lines of numbers appeared. That didn’t work either.
Growing more and more frustrated and hungry by the minute, Rowan walked until he found an awning to use as shade. Blinking away the blinding spots from his eyes, his frustration morphed into anger.
This wasn’t his fucking phone.
Since when did he and Remelle have the same phone? With almost identical cases? He cursed her for whatever plot she’s probably scheming by switching their phones. He cursed her again for being the reason he’s way too exhausted to realize the phone he packed that morning wasn’t even his.
Rowan decided to order a sandwich and water from a shop nearby - using Remelle’s card from the wallet attached to her phone, because fuck you, Remelle - and walk back.
As he walked, Rowan let his mind wander to the golden haired beauty with turquoise eyes across the sea - the source of his emotional exhaustion. He loved her, would go as far as saying he was in love with her. But something about their chemistry had exploded in the weeks leading up to his study abroad program, and not in a good way.
For lack of a better explanation, he was confused. From the moment he met her in his own apartment with Fenrys, he knew they were going to be something. Not even a month later, they went on their first date and the rest was history. Not only was their friendship instantaneously synchronous, but when they finally crossed that intimate threshold, their chemistry was like no other.
Fast forward two years later, and they were better than ever. Aelin fit in with his friend group so perfectly she officially dubbed them “the Cadre” and herself as their “Queen”. Rowan was starting to take his future with her seriously.
But then Lyria transferred to the University of Terrasen.
Rowan never told Aelin about her. He didn’t think he had to. They were childhood to middle school sweethearts, hardly anything substantial. She moved before they got to high school when her dad was transferred to the Air Force base in Eyllwe. They kept in touch as best they could, but it was high school. Remelle was there and Lyria wasn’t. When Aelin came along, he forgot about her altogether.
His first week of senior year, he was waiting for his comparative law class to start, when she sat down next to him. His emerald green eyes met startlingly familiar chestnut ones, and Rowan felt like he couldn’t breathe. He was lucky it was the first day of syllabus week - it didn’t matter if he paid attention or not.
They caught up over coffee and started studying together throughout the semester. He told her all about Aelin, and when he finally introduced the two women, they were fast friends. He wasn’t sure when it happened, but at some point, Aelin’s demeanor began to change.
She was usually so confident with herself and her place in the world, but every time Lyria was mentioned, her eyes shuttered for a brief second. If he wasn’t constantly enamoured with the constant shift from turquoise to gold in her eyes, he would have never noticed.
Then her jealousy began to show, along with her possessiveness. It was unbecoming of her. But every time he brought it up, her pride took over and she denied all of his accusations. Every time he tried to explain that he loved Aelin and a romantic relationship with Lyria was a thing of the past, she brushed it off with an I know but continued to act like a stranger.
When he felt he couldn’t take it anymore, he used his study abroad as an excuse to take a break. He thought it would be a good idea for the two of them to spend some time apart and re-evaluate when he was back in Terrasen. At this point in time, if she hasn’t figured out that he has been faithful to her this whole time, he isn’t sure he will want to fight for them.
It was that thought that brought him back to the housing campus right outside of Mistward Tech. He marched himself straight to Remelle’s room, knowing that even though it was well into the afternoon, she was most definitely still tangled in the sheets with a stranger.
After a minute of incessant knocking, Remelle opened the door with an irritated, “What?”
Rowan didn’t bother being pleasant. “Give me my phone.”
“What are you talking about?” The glint in her eye told him she knew exactly what he was talking about, and Rowan was not having it.
“I honestly don’t give a fuck about what game you’re playing, but I’m exhausted, hungry, and need my phone back.”
“Why do you need it? Expecting a call from someone?”
“No? I just want it back?” Remelle stared at him with a look he couldn’t quite decipher before turning back into her room to retrieve his phone.
When they traded, she said, “You got a weird call this morning. I obviously thought it was my phone so I didn’t bother checking the caller ID, but the other person hung up without saying anything.”
Rowan mumbled a thanks then went to the kitchen to grab a snack to eat in his bed. As soon as he flopped on the bed, all he wanted to do was take a nap, but he managed to stay awake long enough to check his notifications.
Other than a few likes on a post he uploaded a few days ago, there was nothing interesting. He plugged his phone into the charger by the night stand and was about to close his eyes when the sound of an incoming text made him alert. It wasn’t just any sound, though. It was the first few notes of Fur Elise. Aelin’s favorite piano piece.
He quickly sat up on the side of the bed and unlocked his phone. What he read made his heart rate increase as if he was running up the side of one of the mountains near Mistward. She wrote, Hey Rowan. I know we haven’t talked since you left, but I was wondering if you could call me when you’re free? Just let me know, thanks.
He didn’t need to think twice about tapping her name on his favorites list and lifting the phone to his ear. It rang and rang and rang for so long, he thought she wasn’t going to answer. But then she did. And his heart skipped a beat at the sound of her voice.
“Rowan?” She sounded hesitant, like she wasn’t sure it was him on the other end.
“Yeah, it’s me. Um, how are you, Aelin?”
He could hear her heavy breathing, trying to steady herself. It made Rowan nervous. “I think so? It depends on the day, really. I, um, I actually have something I need to talk to you about. I had a whole speech planned out, but I don’t know if there’s a best way to tell you this.”
Rowan waited with bated breath. What could she possibly have to tell him? He wondered if she started dating someone else already. The thought made his stomach drop. But what else could it be?
Aelin took a deep breath with a forceful exhale. The next words that came out of her mouth made his heart join his stomach on the floor.
“Rowan. I’m pregnant.”

Toshinko Week 2020, Day 6: "Bonding"
(This is another excerpt of the story I've been throwing at y'all the last couple Free Day Thursdays. Long post incoming 😅)
The police arrived after Misnomer and his team had already left with the money and some jewelry from the patrons. Toshinori got there just slightly after them, and was horrified to hear how close to death Inko had come. He stayed with her while she offered a tentative description of Misnomer’s true face, and kept an arm around her while she described the encounter and his threat.
"He addressed his threat to the baby?" he asked incredulously. "The Munchkin can barely hear someone at that distance over your heartbeat, right? What was he gonna do, respond in Morse Code kicks?"
Inko snorted, despite herself. "Just like, this little hand punching hard enough for Misnomer to see it flipping him off."
Toshinori smothered an inappropriate giggle. This was a serious situation, after all.
"When you release him from Nine Month Baby Jail, we should probably not teach him that."
"Probably not," Inko agreed, slightly reluctantly. "Maybe he can learn Vicious Mockery instead."
It took Toshinori a few seconds to regain his composure after the mental image that caused. He cleared his throat and turned back to the poor, bewildered police detective who had been taking Inko's statement.
“Sir, I think it would be in the witnesses’ best interests to be under guard until Misnomer is apprehended,” he suggested, passing the detective a business card. “When composite sketches start circulating, this guy is going to know there’s only two people who saw his face.”
The detective took the card, read it, and paled. After stammering incoherently for a few seconds, he paged a superior and squeaked out something about seeing what they could arrange.
By sunset, agencies had been contacted, paperwork had been submitted, and Toshinori had left to “make arrangements”. He was back in twenty minutes, in full costume as All Might to escort the two witnesses to two different protected locations. The elderly woman was temporarily sequestered in a retirement community where at least four orderlies were sidekicks and a pro hero was keeping an eye on the establishment. (They later discovered that Ms. Yamada and the pro hero had staged a revolt against the quality of food being served and had started a takeout-smuggling ring. She’d also completely overhauled their activities list and started dating the man in the little condo next door within four days.)
Inko was taken somewhere else entirely.
“Mind you,” All Might said softly from the back of the large vehicle the police were using, “I’ve not been here before. A friend of mine, Principal Nedzu from U.A., arranged the use of this place.”
They were put on a private train car and, to their equal bemusement and slight concern, shipped off for Hokkaido with little fanfare. There was a van waiting for them, also arranged by the all-too-helpful Nedzu, which took them through a small town with bumpy roads and deposited them at the edge of the sea. The house in question was clearly visible in the fading light, and neither had been expecting it at all.
“....oh….” Toshinori muttered.
It was a rather Western-styled manor house, perhaps eleven to twelve chambers at a guess. With the tide out, they could easily have waded all the way to the stone steps leading up to the door, but it looked as though a boat would be required to get there when the tide came back in. Well, that certainly took care of the “privacy” aspect. Nobody was going to get in or out easily. Of course, there were drawbacks to that, too.
Inko’s brows crinkled with worry, and she clasped her hands protectively over her stomach. “Toshi...we’re not going to be here long, are we?”
“I don’t think so, no,” he answered, squinting out at the water. “The heroes being assigned to the case may not be in the Top Ten, but they’re strong, and dedicated. We’ll be fine.”
In truth, he’d have spearheaded the fight himself if it hadn’t meant leaving Inko alone. And he had no intention of leaving her unprotected until Misnomer was safely behind bars.
“Worst case scenario, we’ll just go to the hospital here in town,” he said in what he hoped was a reassuring way. “Maybe it’s not Eadu General Hospital, but we’ll make do if it comes to it.”
"Story of my life," Inko scoffed under her breath.
A faint breeze brushed hair out of Inko’s face with a trace of salt and she breathed deeply. Well, it was nice to be at the seaside. There was a beach not far from her apartment, but it had become a dump in recent years, and Inko hadn’t seen a proper beach in a very long time. The house was, admittedly, beautiful. Maybe she could just treat this like a vacation, and not a “hiding for your life” experience.
“Well,” she sighed and clutched her small suitcase a little tighter, “I suppose we’d better go see the house.”
In lieu of finding a boat and risking tipping when the tide came in, Toshinori opted to simply lift Inko up in his arms and wade through water that barely reached the middle of his shins. When they made it to the steps, there was a rather scandalized looking woman waiting on the patio.
“Oh my good heavens, sir, you can’t just-! That isn’t safe! Dear oh dear oh dear, are you alright, ma’am?”
Toshinori gently set Inko down and bowed. “Are you Mrs. Oiwa? I was told someone would be here to meet us.”
“Yes yes, Oiwa Michi, very nice to meet you, but what on earth were you doing carrying your poor wife across the marsh like that!?” the middle aged woman blustered, “Don’t you know that’s dangerous?”
Inko twitched. Wife?! Toshinori hadn’t told her the specifics of their cover story. But then, by the way he’d stiffened, perhaps he hadn’t known either. Maybe Mrs. Oiwa was just making assumptions. Or this Nedzu person had arranged it without telling them.
“Ah...I’m...not familiar with salt marshes. I’m very sorry,” Toshinori said at last. “I grew up around forests, I’m afraid! Very different, haha!”
“I was nervous about boats,” Inko added in a squeak, “They seem so shaky to me!”
Mrs. Oiwa’s face softened into something rather more motherly. “Oh, I understand. Still, if you want to walk here, you’d best use the path along the banks, or else wait until the tide is all the way out. The former owners of this place put down a concrete path so visitors could see where it was safe to walk.” She sighed and patted her face. “Dear me, you gave me a fright! Come along then, I think we’d better get you two settled inside, eh?”
The interior was rather like something out of Edwardian England. Dark, polished wood and patterned wallpaper decorated the parlor they’d entered, which opened into a dining room to the front and a hall or ballroom of some kind to the right. There were paintings along the walls, but many of them were covered with sheets, giving the place a fairly spooky atmosphere, especially with the sun setting outside. Mrs. Oiwa seemed used to it, and ushered them along, showing them where the kitchen was, where the bathrooms and toilets were, and how to work the television. (“It’s a bit finicky depending on the weather, I’m afraid, but we do get all the channels even out here on the marsh,” she’d assured them.)
“I come in twice a day, four hours in the morning and two hours in the evening,” she told them as they discovered the elaborate bedrooms upstairs. “I’ll leave my number on the refrigerator door if either of you need to get in touch with me, and if you need to go out while the tide is high, I’ll show you where the boat house is, or you can call for a water taxi like the last folks used to.”
She insisted on making them wakame udon for dinner before leaving in a small motorboat tethered to the end of the stairs, and wished them a pleasant evening.
“Don’t mind the noises now,” she said as a last farewell for the evening, “I know it can be a little unsettling if you’re used to the city, but it’s only the sea and the animals.”
Then she was gone, leaving Inko and Toshinori on the veranda and a little bewildered.
“She thinks we’re married,” Inko said faintly, staring at the fading green light on the back of the Oiwa boat.
“So she does,” answered Toshinori in a near identical tone. “I wasn’t expecting that. It makes sense, though.”
“Yes, I suppose so,” Inko ran a hand over her very pink face. “Ooh boy. We...I have this sudden urge to play out all the tropes from those “fake married” episodes of the shows I’ve been watching since I was a kid.”
Toshinori guffawed and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Yeah, me too. Except we’d probably give ourselves away because it would be too funny.”
They were silent for a moment, then he glanced down at Inko.
"We're totally doing this, aren't we?"
Inko grinned up at him. "We're totally doing this."
Toshinori chuckled -- a little impishly, Inko thought -- turned back to peer at the manor. He gritted his teeth and narrowed his eyes. “Okay, who wants to go back in the creepy probably-not-haunted house first?”
“Toshi!” Inko smacked his arm. “Don’t even put that thought in my head!”
Her stomach twitched and Inko snorted. “You missed, Izuku, he’s over here.” She turned to lean against Toshinori. “Okay, now kick him.”
Izuku, of course, didn’t.

Spanish
I set four alarms for this class and I managed to wake up on time!
...then I fell asleep and woke up 17 minutes late to class. Awesome.
I got to class and I found it strange that my prof wasn’t sharing his screen. There was dialogue happening so I thought we were in the middle of an activity. Turns out, my prof was having internet problems. I managed to get notes from my blockmate but it wasn’t much since he also got there late, LOL. Few minutes later, we get an email from our prof telling us that class is dismissed for today. I quickly went to the bathroom then went back to bed because I needed my sleep. I do hope that he is okay though because it really isn’t his fault that the net here is so bad!! :C
Three stars and a sun, pagdating ng bagyo, connection laglagunnn,,,

Citizenship and Governance
I thank the lord for the great week so far. My girlfriend hyped up my prof since she was her prof during her majors, and I think I understand now. I could sense that she was a sweet soul and I saw it with the way she communicated with the class and discussed the syllabus with us. I found myself taking notes from the syllabus because I do want to take this class seriously.
I was supposed to take this class during my first term during my freshman year, but the registrar swaped it with Gender and Culture. While my other blockmates took it as soon as we could enlist in classes on our own, I decided to follow my flowchart and take this class during the term we were supposed to take Genders. Given the climate in the world and especially in my country right now, I believe that this is where I’m supposed to be.
Tumblr media
I really loved what she said about creating engaged citizens, whatever that may mean for each of us. As long as we join in and do what we can with what we have, that’s already enough. It really is important to take the initiative to grow and learn and to listen to people especially since we all just want to have better living conditions. I’m really geeked for this class. It really is relevant and I’m so excited! I actually recited today because I signed up for a frosh block, so she was asking us who wasn’t part of the block. Luckily I didn’t sound nervous, just smol. She did comment and say “oh how come you made this course last?” and I explained the whole swapping thing and she understood. I’m really excited for this course, can’t you tell? :)
Enlisting in a frosh block is good so far, because everyone is so responsive compared to the last floating I took with my batchmates, lol. I think I’ll turn on my video for this class since she’s nice. That’s it for ClTlGOV!
It feels so nice to have decent professors because look at me, sobrang naeenganyo ako matutuo and I’m actually writing right now! HAYS.
EU Foreign Relations
lMFAOSDF I REALLY TRIED TO STAY MAD during this class. Kinda. To be objective though, I mean, it went okay. It was a review of what we took up in my last class last term, but of course wala naman rin ata naretain doon kaya this is fine. I just don’t trust this prof but I’ll try not to let that cloud my head. I did forget to do the reading but luckily walang recitation today. That’s really all I have to say about this class.
Food Situation
Note: If, for some reason, you are still reading this post (thank you??) I just want to clarify that things are difficult here at home, so going out to get my meal is a big challenge for me. I am in no way promoting unhealthy eating habits. Please eat when you can and eat as much as your body needs to, oki dokie? :)
Due to my long nap after Spanish, I “went” straight to class so I didn’t get to prepare my food. I think I took another nap after ClTlGOV then woke up a little bit before my final class. I tried to make instant udon but I found a sketchy little thing in the water heater, so it was a hard pass.
After my last class, I finally got to eat breakfast! I’ve been wracking my head, thinking about ways to use my Kewpie mayo. When I saw that the food was fried chicken (which looked like it was made Japanese style, but I think this might be from Chowking!), I decidd to just squirt some mayo into my rice before I reheated it. I also seasoned with salt and pepper (too much salt/not enough rice sadly!) and the result was surprisingly very good! It tasted just like my girl and I’s favorite Japanese takeout place back in campus. It felt really nice to eat.
Overall
Tumblr media
Gave T-Bone a Kiwi Dress and he loved it! :)
I’m pretty proud of myself for writing about my day. This is kinda like journaling and I think this can also help me retain certain topics. I really need to reprogram my mindset again (it’s a process after all) regarding my studyblr. I did want to be more active but now I know I have to be more active for a purpose.
That’s it for today! Hopefully I can make carbonara tomorrow morning.
Bye for now ~

SANNA KOMI (KO:MI/PINTANDWEFALL/CATS OF TRANSNISTRIA)
2020 has been the worst year, but thankfully there have been some bright spots, too:
Getting married: being married really is the best.
Hiking in Lapland: The upside of no festival gigs was that there was finally enough time for a long hike in Urho Kekkonen National park in the summer.
Winter swimming as a lockdown routine: instead of cycling to the office in the mornings, I’ve gone for swims at Pikkukoski.
Noodles, wakame seaweed and sesame oil: this year I’ve been obsessed especially with Soba noodles, with Udon noodles as a very close runner up.
I’ve loved these things I’ve watched: Parasite Tove Ilmeisen tuolla puolen (Hilma af Klint documentary) RuPaul’s Drag Race She-Ra and the Princesses of Power Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Noin Viikon Studio Honorary mention to the octopus in My Octopus Teacher (Netflix documentary)
I’ve loved these things I’ve read: Monika Fagerholm: Vem Dödade Bambi? Aura Nurmi: Leijonapatsailla Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Half of a Yellow Sun Zora Neale Hurston: Their Eyes Were Watching God Pajtim Statovci: Bolla Angie Thomas: The Hate U Give Stieg Larsson: Millennium trilogi (perfect for getting re-acquainted with the Swedish language!)
I’ve loved these things I’ve listened to: Iiris Viljanen: Den lilla havsfrun Soft Power: Brink of Extinction Martyn Heine: Shady & Light Kelpe: Boiling, Steaming and Poaching Cello Drones for Tuning and Improvisation
Let’s make 2021 better!
