While I cannot speak for all schools I can tell you what’s going on at the one I work in.
The school is down 2 science teachers and have been since September, no one is applying for the job.
Several members of staff have been off with mental health issues for months due to how stressful everything is.
Two head of departments have handed in their resignations
Two maths teachers have handed their resignations in
3 Teaching assistants have quit
Loads of teachers have their resignations ready to be turned in but are reluctant to leave because they care about the kids.
SEN students aren’t getting their allocated 1-1 support hours due to a shortage of Teaching assistants
The science department can’t afford to do certain practicals
The art department can’t afford new equipment
Only certain classrooms can afford to be heated
Some children who aren’t registered Pupil premium are going hungry and some kind members of staff are buying their lunches for them out of their own pocket.
There’s a shortage of note books
The chairs keep breaking and there’s not enough money to replace them. ( students swinging on chairs over time breaks the back legs)
There’s no glue, the glue that’s left is kept inside offices or teachers desks
There’s no spare stationary, loads of teachers are buying stationary for kids out of their own pockets.
Kids behaviour is getting worse, teachers are battling tik tok and other forms of media for their attention and it’s exhausting.
Kids are starting to think rules don’t apply to them and refuse to come to lessons and are verbally abusive to each other and staff members
There’s been an increase in schools in my area of kids getting into fights and disrupting lessons
The school I work in isn’t even a ‘bad’ school, it’s one of the most applied to in the area which gets the some of the best GCSEs results in the county.
A lot of people are acting like only the “troubled schools” are being affected and it’s not. Every school is struggling which is why Teachers and support staff are protesting.
How can anyone run a school without the budget or the staff, the strikes aren’t affecting your kid’s education, the government is.

Dear trans kids of the UK.
The guidance coming out is just that - guidance. Know that there are so many teachers on your side.
We will never out you to your parents without consent.
Such an act would contradict every shred of safeguarding training we have ever had. Every teaching union condemns this BS guidance.
Keep your heads high. Stay safe. You are you. No Tory hacks, no bigoted organisations, no stupid authors in their 14 million pound castles, can take that from you.
You will survive. You will beat them.
Your happiness is their defeat.

I've just started working with teenagers who come from rough backgrounds, have mental health and behavioural issues, and struggle to stay in school. A couple of the boys can be pretty bigoted - racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, you name it - but one especially is.
We took a few of them out to do some activities and had a pretty fun day. This kid who didn't know that I'm queer and trans was saying all day about how he liked me. Then he gets back to the centre and out of nowhere starts talking about how he hates gay people, how he beat up his brother for being gay and how it's not natural.
So I sat down with him and we talked about it. I listened to him say a bunch of slurs and spout more homophobic shit before telling him that I'm not straight.
I didn't know how he'd react - a few people thought he might get violent. But he listened, and asked questions. About my identity, about when I 'chose' to be gay, all of that.
We talked for a while, and he concluded that he was OK with lesbians existing but he was still disgusted by gay men. Evidently we've still got some work to do on that. Then he said: "But I hate trannies, though."
I didn't know how to react for a second. I hadn't planned on coming out to him - I didn't think I could do it safely, partly because of his beliefs and partly because of wider attitudes about trans people in the UK at the moment. But I told him: "I'm trans, actually."
He put his head in his hands and seemed embarrassed. Good. His mate looked at him and asked why he decided to say that.
And surprisingly this kid listened to me again, and genuinely seemed to want to have a discussion with me. He told me about his beliefs about trans people and I heard him out, and then challenged them. I talked to him about dysphoria: "how would you feel if you woke up with tits tomorrow?" We discussed my nonbinary identity (predictably, he made an attack helicopter joke). And I told him about how I don't feel safe at night because of being trans - something he could relate to, in a sense, cause these kids deal with a lot of violence.
Sure, he was still saying a bunch of homophobic and transphobic stuff. But he told me that even though he doesn't like queer people, he likes me. And I think that that cognitive dissonance alone could spark a change of attitude in him. It's going to take time, and a lot more conversations. But I have faith in him, I think, and I'm proud of him for sitting down and talking with me.
It's really fucking scary being a trans person in education right now. Hearing about the education guidance targeting trans kids, reading all of the TERF rhetoric in the news and on social media, hearing about all of the shit going on in the US... It's enough to make you want to quit, and I don't blame queer educators for quitting. But even though it can be shit being the unofficial representative of your entire community, I'm honoured that I can be here and hopefully, eventually, change some of these kids' minds.

school buildings are crumbling in britain
this dystopian post-brexit tory experience may actually save a whole bunch of kids and their families and teachers from covid this autumn/winter, since of course everyone's pretending that's not a) still here and b) about to get way worse all over again

we really, really do not talk enough about how evil the maintenance loans system is. you submit all your financial information and all your family's financial information, and the poorer you are, the larger a loan you are expected to take out. 80% of people will never pay off these loans.
how is that not obviously evil?
