what was it like to study english literature in uni? I know this is such a broad question but…

It will really be different depending on which university you attend but you're expected to read a lot and fast - but you will not be able to read everything and I think its important to prepare for that! you are also developing your reading comprehension skills, learning how to digest and be critical and think creatively, and in writing you are developing how to express yourself concisely and effectively. with any luck you will have a group that are up for debating and giving thoughts on the texts you read, my uni really lacked that people just sat there silent most of the time and I was the only one to speak up sometimes. it's always worth saying something to try and get the conversation going, but also remember to not hog the speaking time and see if anyone else wants to talk. it's a really really brilliant and useful degree that 100% changed my life and made me smarter. it's terrible how hard it is to get a job beyond teaching with this degree, but that's political. its not a way to measure the degrees worth because we COULD live in a country that values the humanities but we sadly don't, especially in the past couple of years. I do wish I wasn't in huge debt for it because my education was severely interrupted by strikes and protests because my lecturers were demanding higher pay and my university was outsourcing the cleaning staff who weren't being paid fairly or protected by the university which was suffused with racial issues as most of the staff were BAME working class local residents. All universities have issues like this in the UK, I don't think its normal and don't know if this is the same experience abroad but I'd also say to expect that. There's such an attack on education currently, take the opportunity while you can in my opinion.

Back to the degree - I really loved the degree I did because it covered the basics of Eng Lit in foundational modules but also had some really interesting unique, modern, political and diverse modules that you don't get at the Russel group universities. for example one of my favourite modules was Literary London which taught us about the phantom London that exists in fictional literature from William Blake, Charles Dickens to lesser known but also brilliant poets like Amy Levy - who was the first Jewish woman to attend Cambridge Univeristy. So when choosing your degree depending on what you want to learn about I would recommend looking for a course that goes a bit beyond England and the standard teaching experience, as you research you will start to notice the same topics and time periods being taught.

ryan is orignally from canberra australia, his family still live over there. he’s the middle child, he’s got an older sister + a older brother, then two younger half sisters who are twins.

but he still loves his siblings all the same!! he’s pretty close with all of his siblings, he’s in touch with them regularly.

ryan moved over to the uk and to london, to study, he wanted a new adventure, he wanted to see the world.

he did three years at unviersity in london and he studied music, he LOVED it.

once he was done with univeristy, he decided that he wanted to stay in london a little longer, so he did.

he got his own place with some friends from univeristy, the all live in this small flat in notting hill, it’s tiny but it’s home and it’s full of love.

he currently has two jobs, he’s working as a barista at notting hill coffeehouse but he’s also recently started djing at the sound factory.

SHOE DESIGN

Id be interested in going into shoe design and making some shoe that is more of an art than an actual shoe. Id love to be able to make something which confuses people. For this I would look into the london school of design to get to this point. If I was to go into university I think id be at a huge dissadvantage as I think most people would have already developed there knowledge in shoe design so I would be behind compared to other students. A lot of the biggest shoe designers have established them self at an older age

A huge shoe that inspires me is is the mason margiela tabi boot which creates such an obscure shoe that some people turn there nose up to but some people really look up to

Trend forecaster look into what will be coming up next in the future they do this by looking at the past to tell buyers and sellers for sellers what to buy. There is big forecasting groups like trend stop and tobe TDG which sell wht they know for big prices to people. Ive got experience in this from when would buy and sell online. Although this is something id like to go into I would prefer something with way more creativity like fashion designing so im going to do some more research on that and if I don’t think it would suit me then im going to go into fashion design.
